Former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty might no longer be playing football, but he’ll still be making the television rounds on Sundays as an NFL analyst for NBC Sports.

The NBC Sports PR team announced on Tuesday the three-time Super Bowl champion was joining the Football Night in America crew.

McCourty has spent a big part of his offseason working in as much media as possible to sharpen his skills as a talking head. He’s done a tremendous job with it, and it eventually led to a major media gig with NBC Sports and Sunday Night Football. Not bad for a guy that was only retired for two months.

Patriots fans won’t have to wait long for McCourty to work a game featuring his former team. New England is slated to take on the Miami Dolphins on Sunday Night Football in Week 2 of their 2023 regular season schedule.

Devin McCourty and Jason McCourty were back together in Boston to host the 2023 Boston Medical Center’s “BMC Seasons” event on Saturday night at the Seaport Hotel.

Per the BMC’s website, this event will raise “critical support for leading health equity initiatives—including food access, investments in housing, financial literacy, and much more—that rely on philanthropy.”

Both of the McCourty brothers have been shining examples to the greater Boston community in their willingness to give back. So it’s no surprise they were once again at the forefront in spearheading hosting duties for such a great cause.

The McCourty brothers have always been proponents of social equity, and it certainly feels good to know they are striving to drive change even after retiring from football.

Tom Brady makes appearance in epic Patriots schedule release video

Past Patriots stars reunite for this epic 2023 schedule release video.

The New England Patriots must have locked in like the second half of Super LI when making their 2023 schedule release video.

On Thursday night, the team dropped an epic video that included a multitude of retired Patriots players, including Devin McCourty, Rob Ninkovich, Andre Tippett, James White and others.

It even included an unexpected appearance from legendary quarterback Tom Brady.

The concept of the video centers around McCourty entering the Patriots’ “retirement house” with the team’s scheduled 2023 meetings popping up throughout the multiple vignettes. Along with Brady, there are also mentions of other Patriots greats, like former receiver Julian Edelman and tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The addition of Brady is a feel-good moment for Patriots fans. There will be plenty more to come with the future Hall of Famer slated to be honored in the team’s home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

It isn’t a pretty schedule for the Patriots, who will face a murderer’s row slate of opponents filled with expected playoff contenders. But the return of Brady, at least for now, takes away some of the sting before the season arrives.

Devin McCourty excited about offensive possibilities with Mike Gesicki

Devin McCourty believes Mike Gesicki could be the Patriots’ best mismatch on the field.

Tight end Mike Gesicki was one of the big acquisitions in the New England Patriots’ 2023 offseason.

He comes to the organization after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Miami Dolphins. When speaking with NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran, former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty said he believes Gesicki will be an asset to the offense.

He went over some of the Patriots’ offensive weapons and made sure to mention the former Penn State tight end. Gesicki is coming off a season with Miami that saw him record 32 catches for 362 yards and five touchdowns. Now, he could play a major role for a New England offense looking for a vertical weapon at the tight end position.

McCourty offered insight into the mismatch capabilities Gesicki brings to the table.

“That’s how we saw him,” McCourty said. “Every time he checked into the game we would call personnel and we would put ‘light’ at the end of it. He’s a tight end but ‘light’ would remind us that it’s really a receiver.

“I think he’ll probably be their best mismatch when it comes to game plan and getting him matched up. He had a great year in 2021. A new offense comes in and doesn’t fit him (in 2022 and his numbers decline). I’m excited to see what he does in this offense.”

The relationship between Gesicki and Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien could work out well for the team in a year where they’re hoping to find an offensive spark. Gesicki’s ability to cause problems with matchups is exactly what the Patriots need to keep offensive pace in the modern NFL.

Devin McCourty optimistic about Tyquan Thornton’s second year

Will Tyquan Thornton break out in 2023? Former Patriots CB Devin McCourty has high hopes for the second-year receiver.

Former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty seems bullish about the Patriots’ new offense, and he had high praise for some weapons in particular. One of the weapons he thought of highly was wide receiver Tyquan Thornton.

The second-year Baylor product had flashes of production during the 2022 season. He ended up catching 22 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. He was a bright spot on an offensive unit that was stagnant at times. His best game of the season came against Miami on January 1. He caught seven passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, starting off the New Year in style.

McCourty talked to NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran and offered his thoughts on what Thornton could bring to the table.

“With his speed and his ability to get down the field horizontally and vertically, I think he definitely has a chance,” McCourty said, during an appearance on NBC Sports Boston’s “Quick Slants”. “I’m so interested to see what he looks like in this offense now compared to last year where it was really just, ‘Run straight down, let’s run a shot play here and there.’”

There is no doubt that Thornton has speed, which is what made him an early Patriots draft target in 2022. It will be interesting to see what his role in the offense will be.

New England now has a whole new group of weapons in the fold. This could give Thornton his best chance to develop, while he looks to break out in his second season.

Patriots looking for someone to replace this part of defense

With Devin McCourty gone, who will step up as a defensive leader for the Patriots?

New England Patriots assistant coach Jerod Mayo indicated the organization is still looking for an on-field leader and defensive signal caller. Right now, the position is up for grabs following the retirement of Devin McCourty.

McCourty had been with the New England organization since the 2010 season. Replacing the safety’s leadership will not be easy, and someone will have to step up. McCourty undoubtedly helped the Patriots in a big way with the defensive unit, which ranked fifth overall in the NFL. Now, the organization will look to carry over that consistency for 2023.

It all starts with the team finding that go-to guy, as reported by the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan.

Much of the personnel remains unchanged, and that should help New England remain one of the top defensive units in the NFL, regardless of who is calling the plays.

Devin McCourty had great reaction to Bill Belichick’s latest comments

Devin McCourty found Bill Belichick’s “last 25 years” comment very amusing.

Former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty had a great reaction to Bill Belichick’s comments at the NFL annual meeting.

The Patriots coach was asked why fans should trust him, as the team enters a crucial 2023 season. The coach gave a rather pointed answer, and did so in Belichickian fashion.

“The last 25 years,” said Belichick.

McCourty spent a decade-plus under the coach and understands exactly what Belichick’s mindset is behind the scenes. It is perhaps that mental image that made the former safety laugh so much.

It’s a fair question, given that the AFC East is going to be tighter than ever in 2023. McCourty gave his take during Tuesday’s episode of ESPN’s Get Up, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Dakota Randall.

“I died laughing,” McCourty said. “Watching it, seeing as Mike asked that question, in (Belichick’s) head I’m picturing him like, ‘I don’t care.’ He doesn’t care what the fans think. He doesn’t care if they’re gonna get excited, not get excited, coming to the game. Bill doesn’t think about the business of football. He thinks about putting a winning football team on the field. So when he sat there and was like, ‘I don’t know, 25 years,’ I was like, ‘Yeah, Bill! Talk! Let ’em know who you are. Have fun.’

“And I heard you guys on here chirping earlier. He’s not going into the locker room telling his guys, ‘Let’s focus on 25 (years).’ He’s gonna be on those guys, he’s gonna be telling them what they need to do, how to win football games. He doesn’t care about the last 25 years when it comes to his football team. But when it comes to the fans … he doesn’t care about those things. When he talks to his team, though, he’s gonna be demanding.”

Given Belichick’s coaching style, this point of view is also very much valid. New England will have their work cut out for them this season, as they are projected to have the fifth-hardest schedule in the NFL.

Nevertheless, new acquisitions and a chance to pick highly in this April’s draft could make the 2023 season run much smoother. It will be interesting to see what happens, as the organization enters a crucial point in many respects.

Devin McCourty pitches for Patriots to join Lamar Jackson sweepstakes

Devin McCourty believes the Patriots should inquire about Lamar Jackson.

A former member of the New England Patriots says the team shouldn’t pass up on the chance to land Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Former Patriots safety Devin McCourty still supports Mac Jones. However, he believes the organization should at least kick the tires on a talented quarterback like Jackson.

Jackson battled injury issues last season with the Ravens and was able to put up respectable numbers. He threw for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He released a statement on Monday indicating that he requested a trade from the organization. The Ravens obliging would put one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league on the market.

McCourty appeared on ESPN’s Get Up Tuesday and pitched for the Patriots to at least inquire about the quarterback, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Zack Cox.

“You have to make a call and see,” said McCourty. “If you hear Lamar Jackson is interested in playing on your team — this guy won MVP of the league. He’s one of the rare quarterbacks that you say, ‘He’s a guy.’ When he gets out there, he can go change a franchise. So you’ve got to at least call and say, ‘Hey, Baltimore, what’s up? What are we talking about here? What is it going to take.’ “

This would put current Patriots quarterback Mac Jones in a precarious position. Even still, Jackson would bring an immediate boost to the quarterback position and put the Patriots back into Super Bowl contention.

Although it might not happen, it is certainly fun to think about.

Devin McCourty reveals ideal playing destination for Tom Brady

If Tom Brady did return, this is the team Devin McCourty could envision him joining.

Former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty sees an interesting scenario where Tom Brady could return to the NFL. That scenario, however, would not take him back to New England.

In what would be an interesting twist, McCourty could see Brady calling Miami home, if he decided to return to football.

It would be an ideal move, given that Miami has wide receivers like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. They also made a major move recently, acquiring Jalen Ramsey on the defensive side of the football. The Dolphins have the pieces to win, and this is something that could make Miami enticing to Brady.

McCourty spoke on Chris Long’s “Green Light” podcast recently and mused over the idea, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Gio Rivera.

“Yo, I think he’s done, until Miami kind of worked itself out,” said McCourty. “I’m not saying he’s going to [join the Miami Dolphins], but I would not be surprised if he decided like, ‘Yo, I’m living in Miami now. They just got Jalen Ramsey.’ They got a lot of things that can go right over there.

“…Just knowing him, the thought that he can throw the ball to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Like, I could see him very excited about the idea.”

It would certainly be bittersweet to see Brady in a Dolphins uniform.

The move would make sense, given that the quarterback would not have to leave the state of Florida. Nevertheless, this is pure speculation on Brady, who is still enjoying retirement.
