McCourty brothers to reunite for Patriots’ preseason games

The McCourty brothers are giving Patriots fans an alternative way of viewing the preseason.

Former New England Patriots defensive backs Devin and Jason McCourty are going from the football field to the broadcast booth together to cover the Patriots’ preseason games.

They will host “The McCourty TwinCast” as an alternate way of watching the preseason. The show will be available on Patriots.com and WBZ.com.

Both brothers have had experience in media following their retirements. Devin most recently appeared on NBC’s pregame coverage of Sunday Night Football. Meanwhile, Jason takes the morning shift, as one of the hosts of “Good Morning Football” on the NFL Network. He also provides analysis for particular NFL broadcasts.

This will be an intriguing twist on the game, as both McCourty brothers played pivotal roles for New England during their time with the team. Devin retired this past March, after 14 seasons with the Patriots.

The debut for the program is slated to begin on Thursday, Aug. 10, when the Patriots face the Houston Texans in their preseason opener.

Former Patriots look back on ridiculously stacked 2014 defense

Defensive lineups don’t get much scarier than this

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

It’s easy to forget how ridiculously stacked the New England Patriots were defensively in their 2014 Super Bowl-winning season.

A Twitter post looking back on the unit got a retweet from multiple former Patriots players that were on the roster at that time, including Dont’a Hightower, Jamie Collins, Patrick Chung and James White.

Other standouts included Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis, Vince Wilfork, Chandler Jones, Jerod Mayo, Devin McCourty, Logan Ryan, Brandon Browner and Rob Ninkovich.

It’s one of the most imposing defensive lineups on paper in franchise history. Some of the greatest players that have ever suited up in a Patriots uniform were on the roster.

It’s an incredible stroll down memory lane that former Patriots players decided to chime in on.

The Patriots went on to defeat the Seattle Seahawks at Super Bowl XLIX that season.

After Tom Brady and the offense engineered another one of their improbable comebacks, Malcolm Butler, who was an undrafted rookie cornerback at the time, secured a goal line interception on Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson to help the defense seal the victory.

Devin McCourty has funny reaction to latest Dalvin Cook report

Devin McCourty shared his thoughts on free agent RB Dalvin Cook

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

There has been talk of Dalvin Cook potentially signing with the Miami Dolphins, but the free agent running back could be leveraging himself in a position to get more money on the table first.

That’s how former Patriots safety Devin McCourty sees it.

Cook to the Dolphins would make a ton of sense. Cook is from South Florida and played football for the Florida State Seminoles. The Florida native would fit with the Dolphins on the field as well by giving them the potent running back they have been missing.

McCourty shared his thoughts on the situation when responding to a post regarding a report that Cook had turned down the Dolphins’ contract offer.

Cook is coming off a season that saw him record 1,173 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in 2022.

There have been discussions with some fans and media members about Cook potentially teaming up with DeAndre Hopkins to come to New England as a package deal. While that’s a long-shot possibility, it isn’t something that can be completely ruled out yet, either.

One thing is for certain: The Dalvin Cook sweepstakes will remain one of the biggest storylines until a deal eventually gets done.

Devin McCourty reveals moments that led to retirement decision

Devin McCourty talked about what ultimately led to his retirement decision

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

After the 2022 season, it didn’t take former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty long to come to the realization that it was time to hang up the cleats.

Part of his decision stemmed from his overall view of where the team was headed.

New England finished the 2022 season with a record of 8-9 and missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. McCourty finished the year with 71 combined tackles and four interceptions. The interceptions were his most since the 2019 season.

The former Rutgers star closed out the year on a high note, recording five tackles and an interception against the Buffalo Bills in the finale. Nevertheless, he admits he knew it was time to hang up the cleats even after the stellar finish, as transcribed by Pro Football Network’s Arif Hasan.

“But I think especially as you get older, you start to only play to win a Super Bowl. And I was like, if I go back, I don’t think we’ll go win a Super Bowl,” said McCourty. “So as I started to sit there and be like, alright, ‘what did we really set myself up for? We were eight and nine last year? Am I gonna go to another team? Is it worth it for six months?’”

It wasn’t just the state of the team that helped McCourty come to the realization that his time was up as a football player. The workouts also started to feel different for the longtime veteran.

One session in particular with special teams legend Matthew Slater changed everything.

“A good friend of mine, Matt Slater, is in there working out as I’m rehabbing so I’m like, ‘alright,’” said McCourty. “And I forgot what day it was, I was like, ‘These next two days, I’m gonna go in here and workout.’ And I’m in there working out and like, I’m now thinking, ‘I’m doing kind of an old man workout.’ And I’m watching him, and I’m seeing a difference between the way he’s working out and the way I’m working now.

“I kind of knew from right there it was probably it. I then went on vacation and just being with my family, I knew I didn’t want to do that anymore. And I knew some of the things I wanted to pursue, going on TV, doing those things, felt more important than going and playing football at the time.”

No one can doubt McCourty’s dedication and productivity for the Patriots throughout his incredible career. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end at some point.

If success is all about the company you keep, then New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is clearly on his way to bigger and better things when hanging around two legends like Tom Brady and Devin McCourty.

On Thursday, McCourty posted a group selfie of the trio together on his Instagram page.

Patriots fans are undoubtedly hoping Jones brought a playbook and film along with him to break down football with the greatest quarterback of all time. The two were never teammates, but it would be a feel-good moment seeing Brady pass some of his infinite football wisdom down to Jones, who is looking for a bounce-back season in 2023.

“Them: Devin what have you been doing since you retired?
Me: Living life!!!!,” McCourty posted on Instagram.

Brady is slated to be honored at the Patriots’ home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 10. So hopefully, this is the beginning of a long and fruitful friendship between him and Jones.

Here’s what Devin McCourty reportedly said on Jack Jones

Devin McCourty reportedly shared his thoughts on Patriots CB Jack Jones.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

With some character questions being thrown around surrounding New England Patriots cornerback Jack Jones, retired safety Devin McCourty, Jones’ former teammate, brought some perspective when texting NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran.

Jones posted $30,000 bail on Tuesday during his arraignment on gun-related charges. McCourty reportedly noted the second-year cornerback’s tough upbringing, but he also made it clear that he was a “good kid.”

“I texted a little bit with Devin McCourty yesterday, and he simply said, ‘[Jack Jones] is a good kid,” Curran said, when appearing on Gresh & Fauria. “He just had a tough upbringing, and sometimes it’s hard for guys to shake loose from the way things that they have seen growing up.’ But he did pledge, ‘This is a good kid.’ He didn’t just say, ‘Oh, it was a matter of time.’ I don’t want to speak out of turn on Devin’s behalf, and I hope I wasn’t betraying anything regarding him, but he said, ‘He’s a good kid.'”

Jones pleaded not guilty after being arrested last Friday at a security checkpoint at Logan International Airport for allegedly attempting to board a flight with firearms.

He is facing two counts on each of the following charges: possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport; possession of ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card; unlawful possession of a firearm; carrying a loaded firearm; and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.

A conviction could lead to jail time for the 25-year-old defensive back.

What Devin McCourty is hearing from Patriots players on Christian Gonzalez

Patriots players are already buzzing about rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

There is an unusual amount of excitement behind closed doors from New England Patriots players in regards to the otherworldly potential of rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

Legendary safety Devin McCourty might no longer be in the locker room, but he still has great connections with players within the Patriots’ organization. The things he’s hearing about Gonzalez in organized team activities has even made him reconsider his own way of thinking in relation to rookies and veterans.

“I hate when people rank rookies over guys who have had success in the NFL, but I’ve talked to some of those guys and they’re like, ‘Man, Gonzalez, he can play,'” McCourty said on Good Morning Football, via NESN’s Zack Cox.

The Patriots haven’t transitioned over to padded practices yet. So, we’re still only getting a sneak peek of Gonzalez in helmets and shorts. But even in a limited setting, Gonzalez continues to do things on the field that keeps people talking.

The next Patriots OTAs practice available to media members is expected to be held on Friday afternoon. Gonzalez was lining up with the top defensive unit on Tuesday, which means he’s already trending towards being a Day 1 starter.

At the next practice, he’s sure to have countless eyes on him, eager to see if the hype train is real.

Kyle Dugger recognizes void left by Devin McCourty’s retirement

Kyle Dugger isn’t shying away from the challenges ahead without Devin McCourty.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

New England Patriots safety Kyle Dugger is ready to take on the challenge of the 2023 season, even though he knows the team will have a difficult time replacing Devin McCourty.

McCourty retired after 13 seasons with the organization, leaving a hole at the safety position. Now, Dugger will be tasked with providing a spark to a positional unit that includes the likes of Jabrill Peppers, Jalen Mills and Adrian Phillips. There will be no shortage of veteran experience, even with McCourty’s absence.

Although the positional unit is relatively deep, Dugger recognizes the importance McCourty had on the organization, as he recently told assembled media members.

Dugger will have an important role in 2023, as he looks to make a major impact in his fourth season. A successful year from Dugger would do wonders for not only the Patriots’ safety group, but the defensive unit as a whole.

Devin McCourty and Jason McCourty name hardest NFL players to tackle

Who were some of the hardest NFL players to tackle for Devin McCourty and Jason McCourty?

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty started the conversation on the hardest players he’s had to tackle over the course of his NFL career.

The conversation started with former Patriots running back Steven Jackson before expanding and leading to Jason McCourty to chime in as well. Jason had a productive career, and it included a stint in New England from 2018-2020. He won a Super Bowl with the organization in the process.

He responded to his brother’s Twitter post, where Devin named off Marshawn Lynch, LeSean McCoy and Jamaal Charles as some of his hardest tackles. That list was an easy co-sign for Jason, who also threw Maurice Jones-Drew and Chris Johnson’s name in there as well.

“Add Jones-Drew to that and I watched Chris Johnson make guys fall in practice when the drill was touch,” Jason tweeted.

One has to wonder what it would have been like to tackle any of the running backs listed. It’s fun to reminisce with the McCourty brothers on the many great players that made an impression on them during their playing days.

Devin McCourty notes this former Patriot as one of the worst to tackle

Devin McCourty has not-so-fond memories of attempting to tackle this former Patriots player.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Devin McCourty had a former New England Patriots running back in mind when discussing which player was one of the toughest to tackle in his NFL career.

That player was former three-time Pro Bowler Steven Jackson.

Jackson was a bulldozer over the course of his career, recording 2,764 carries for 11,438 yards and 59 touchdowns in 12 NFL seasons. He measured in at 6-foot-2, 240 pounds and was difficult to tackle when going downhill.

McCourty found that out the hard way and reminisced about his difficulties in a tweet on Friday morning. The safety faced the running back in a preseason game in 2010 and got a first-hand look at Jackson’s abilities.

For what it’s worth, the Rams beat the Patriots in that game by a 36-35 margin.

It’s interesting to look back now and see which players McCourty remembers facing the most. If anything, it’s a testament to his impressive longevity.
