Doug Pederson plans to use bye to work with Jaguars’ young players

Some coaches give players the week off during the bye. Doug Pederson has a different plan.

A bye week is a chance for teams to get some much-needed rest and recuperation, but Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Pederson is also trying to get a little more out of the time off.

“I’m not giving them the whole week,” Pederson told reporters Monday. “I’m going to bring the guys in tomorrow and Wednesday and get some work in, especially with our younger players. I think it will be good and beneficial to work with them and keep their development and growth coming, but at the same time, our older players, the starters, it’s a time to sort of rest and heal and get ready for this back half push.

“We’re not game planning anything but go back and really go through sort of this first part of the season and just kind of re-teach and re-learn and show them. You’re a little
bit calmer this time during the bye than you would be during a game plan week. It’s a great opportunity with these guys to continue to learn.”

Among the players who could most use the time as a chance for further development is rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd, who missed most of training camp. Lloyd started the 2022 season on a torrid pace before struggling in recent weeks.

During the Jaguars’ Week 10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Lloyd spent much of the game watching from the sideline while fellow rookie Chad Muma got snaps at linebacker.

“He missed all the live reps in training camp, and that’s hard because those are all valuable reps,” Pederson said of Lloyd. “But we’ve played a lot of football now, too. He should be understanding what the scheme is, understanding his technique and how to play within the defense a little bit.

“Again, this is that time of year with young players that we’re coming out of Week 10 into a bye in Week 11. This is sort of that rookie wall you talk about a little bit with some of these guys, and again, it’s a good time for a break.”

Lloyd could be a player who benefits from a little extra work with coaches during the bye week.

Jaguars’ Doug Pederson: ‘We just needed to get Chad Muma in the game’

Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd spent the entire fourth quarter watching from the sideline.

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd spent a significant amount of time Sunday watching fellow rookie linebacker Chad Muma get extended action against the Kansas City Chiefs.

After the game, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said the decision to keep Lloyd on the sideline wasn’t due to anything other than Muma’s capabilities.

“There was no injury,” Pederson said. “We just needed to get Chad in the game.”

Lloyd, a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, began the season as a Defensive Rookie of the Year favorite when he recorded two interceptions, six passes defended in the first three weeks. Since then, Lloyd has been a liability in coverage with opposing offenses targeting the middle of the field.

While Lloyd opened the game against the Chiefs with a fumble recovery, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense had little difficulty racking up three passing touchdowns by halftime.

Muma, a third-round rookie, played the entire fourth quarter and had a season-high 25 defensive snaps. That matched his total from the last five weeks combined. Muma finished Week 10 with five tackles.

Fifth-year linebacker Foye Oluokun, who was signed in the offseason to a three-year, $45 million deal, played every defensive snap Sunday and was credited with seven tackles.

Daniel Bellinger says Jags’ Devin Lloyd reached out to him after eye injury

New York Giants TE Daniel Bellinger says Jacksonville Jaguars LB Devin Lloyd reached out to him and apologized after injuring his eye.

New York Giants rookie tight end Daniel Bellinger is hopeful that he can return this season as he recovers from surgery to repair the fractured eye socket and septum, which he suffered in the team’s Week 7 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Bellinger was injured on a freak play where Jaguars rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd’s hand slipped through his face mask, jamming New York’s tight end in the left eye. He was carted from the field and taken to a local hospital.

The surgery revealed no damage to the eye but Bellinger needed to have a metal plate inserted in his face to support the healing process.

On Wednesday, Bellinger told reporters that he is still experiencing some double vision and will wear a visor when he returns to action, whenever that may be.

“It’s unfortunate,” said Bellinger. “It’s a one-in-a-million injury, that’s how I see it. Just got to come back and be stronger because of it.”

Bellinger said there wasn’t much different he could have done to prevent the injury.

“I don’t think so. I just think that wearing a visor will help. He was going for the ball and I had the ball close to my facemask and he got in there. Just a freak accident,” he said. “I think just wearing a visor will protect that in the future.”

Bellinger also said that Lloyd had reached out to him to check on his condition.

“He messaged me on Instagram,” said Bellinger. “Sent a nice message apologizing. He didn’t mean anything by it. I played him in college, too, and I never saw him as a dirty player. I think he’s a good player and he apologized for it so it’s cool.”

Bellinger played his college ball at San Diego State and faced Lloyd, who played at Utah, last season.

Watch: Jaguars interception negated by roughing the passer call

The Jaguars’ streak of zero takeaways almost ended, but a penalty wiped it out.

The Jacksonville Jaguars appeared to finally end their lengthy streak of not recording a takeaway, but a Devin Lloyd interception was negated by a penalty.

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones threw into traffic into the middle of the field, but officials flagged linebacker Foye Oluokun for making helmet-to-helmet contact with Jones on a blitz up the middle.

Untimely penalties on the Jaguars defense have proven costly in the past, including a Josh Allen offsides penalty earlier against the Giants that extended a drive that should’ve reached a fourth down on the play.

Fortunately for Jacksonville, the roughing call on Oluokun didn’t help the Giants much. After a Saquon Barkley put the ball just a few yards from the goal line, Barkley was stuffed on second down and the Giants threw back-to-back incomplete passes on third and fourth down plays.

Lloyd had two interceptions earlier in the season, but the Jaguars haven’t forced a turnover since recording a pick-six early in the Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

5 Jaguars players to watch vs. Giants in Week 7

These five Jaguars players will be important Sunday if the team hopes to snap its three-game losing streak.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have their back against the wall after three straight losses. An exciting start to the season had the team atop the AFC South standings, but the team’s slide now has the Jaguars stuck playing from behind.

To get back on track, the Jaguars will have to do what five teams were unable to do in the first six weeks: beat the New York Giants.

While a 5-1 record suggests the Giants have been a dominant team to start the year, the stats tell a different story. New York has found a way to win games the numbers say they should’ve lost.

That’s a trap Jacksonville keeps managing to fall into this season. Here are five Jaguars players who can help make sure the team doesn’t do that again in Week 7:

Watch: Jaguars furious after no-call for push off on Colts touchdown

The Colts got a fourth quarter lead with a Jelani Woods touchdown that Jaguars players didn’t think should’ve counted.

The Indianapolis Colts got their first lead of the game in Week 6 against the Jacksonville Jaguars when rookie tight end Jelani Woods hauled in a 10-yard reception from quarterback Matt Ryan.

But Jaguars players were furious with officials for not throwing a flag for offensive pass interference on the play as it appeared Woods pushed rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd down to the ground before making the grab.

While multiple Jaguars players — including outside linebacker Josh Allen and safety Rayshawn Jenkins — were shown pleading with officials for a flag to be thrown, the touchdown counted for the Colts.

The touchdown gave Indianapolis a 26-21 lead with just under 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter. It was the third touchdown of Woods’ career and his second reception of the day against the Jaguars.

Jaguars’ Devin Lloyd: After a loss like that, ‘you’re ready to get back to work’

Devin Lloyd is ready to put the loss to the Eagles behind him.

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd has had to deal with the challenge of putting blowout victories in the rearview mirror and focusing on the week ahead. But he says forgetting about a frustrating result like the team’s 29-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles isn’t hard at all.

“Really, after a game like yesterday, you’re ready to get back to work,” Lloyd said. “After any game, but especially after you lose, you want to get over the film, watch it, and put it behind you and get back to a new week. It’s like a fresh start, so that’s what we’re looking forward to.”

The Jaguars jumped out to a 14-0 lead against the Eagles before giving up 29 consecutive points to a run-heavy Philadelphia offense. By the end of the game, the Eagles had 210 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns on 50 carries.

It was a concerning day for a Jaguars defense that was previously looking stout against opposing run games. On the other hand, not many teams will present the challenges that a Jalen Hurts-led offense can offer.

“I would say the biggest thing was the fact that Jalen (Eagles QB Jalen Hurts) was such a threat running the ball, that now we had to account for him,” Lloyd said. “There was an extra guy to account for him pretty much for every play and every defensive snap. That was kind of the biggest adjustment.”

Lloyd, 24, was particularly susceptible to getting fooled by Hurts as he spent much of the day assigned to “spy” on the Eagles quarterback. It led to several plays where Lloyd was pulled out of position to make stops elsewhere.

The Jaguars face another dangerous rushing attack in Week 5 when the Houston Texans visit Jacksonville. Rookie running back Dameon Pierce already has 313 rushing yards — 10th most in the NFL — and two touchdowns through his first four games with the Texans.

Fortunately for Lloyd and the Jaguars, Texans quarterback Davis Mills doesn’t present as much of a rushing threat.

The Eagles are heading west to Arizona 4-0 after a hard-fought 29-21 win over the Jaguars at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday afternoon.

With the rain and wind causing headaches for both offenses, Jalen Hurts overcame a slow start as he led Philadelphia to 29 straight points after hitting the gas early in the second quarter.

Miles Sanders ran for a career-best 134 yards while the Eagles defense forced five turnovers on the day while harassing Jacksonville star quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Haason Reddick recorded two sacks on the day, and he’s the highest graded player in Week four per PFF.

National reactions: Eagles flying high at 4-0 after win over Jaguars

Here’s what they’re saying nationally about the Philadelphia Eagles’ 29-21 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4

Doug Pederson returned home to a raucous ovation, and then the celebration ended as the Eagles beat the Jaguars, 29-21, moving Philadelphia to 4-0, keeping them as the lone undefeated team in the NFL.

The Eagles were faced with adversity after a Jalen Hurts interception was returned for a touchdown, but the offense settled down, and the team ran off 29 straight points.

The day after offered some reaction from the national media, and the responses were all the same, with the Philadelphia offense on a historic pace through five games.
