Southern Miss sends the Tigers packing in Game 7 of the Hattiesburg Regional

The Tigers’ season came to an end in the regional final on Monday evening.

Two of the best words in all of sports: Game 7.

It was do-or-die for LSU and Southern Miss as they squared off for the third time this weekend at the Hattiesburg Regional. Despite winning their first two games of the postseason, the Tigers couldn’t close things out and saw their season end in an 8-7 shootout.

[autotag]Ma’Khail Hillard[/autotag] got the start on the mound in the big game. Southen Miss got on the board early as the first batter of the game hit a solo shot to make it 1-0 Golden Eagles. LSU answered back with a big first inning of their own as the Tigers plated three runs thanks to a two-RBI single from [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] and a bunt single for an RBI by [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to make it 3-1 Tigers after one.

In the bottom of the third inning, [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] made his presence felt as he hit a solo shot of his own to make it 4-1 LSU.

In the top of the fourth inning, [autotag]Paul Gervase[/autotag], the Tigers’ closer, came in to try and eat up some innings and retain the LSU lead. Southern Miss proceeded to score two runs and cut the lead to 4-3.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, LSU loaded the bases with two outs but they were unable to score any runs as [autotag]Drew Bianco[/autotag] struck out to end the inning. In the top of the seventh, Southern Miss loaded the bases on [autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game at 4-4.

That brought [autotag]Bryce Collins[/autotag] out of the bullpen for LSU and the first hitter he faced ripped a single to left field to score the go-ahead run as the Golden Eagles took a 5-4 lead. After a four-pitch walk to load the bases, [autotag]Trent Vietmeier[/autotag] was brought out of the bullpen to try and get LSU out of the jam only down by one run.

The first batter Vietmeier faced hit a two-RBI single to right field to make it 7-4 Golden Eagles before the Tigers finally got out of the inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, Berry walked, Doughty doubled, and [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 7-5. Thompson then grounded one up the middle to make it a one-run game.

Still two outs, runners on first and second for [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag]. McManus struck out, but the Tigers were able to score two runs and cut it to a one-run game as we headed to the eighth inning.

In the top of the eighth inning, [autotag]Eric Reyzelman[/autotag] entered the game looking to help the Tigers keep the momentum going from the bottom of the seventh. He did his job as he retired the Golden Eagles 1-2-3 and kept the momentum rolling for the Tigers.

Dugas, Bianco, and Pearson were due up for LSU. On a 3-1 count, Gavin Dugas hit a solo home run to tie the game at seven. With two outs, Crews drew a walk to put him on first base as Berry stepped into the box.

That elicited a pitching change from Southern Miss. Berry grounded out, and we went to the ninth inning tied 7-7. In the top of the ninth, Southern Miss scored a run on a sacrifice fly to take an 8-7 lead as we headed to the bottom of the ninth.

This was it, do-or-die. How would the Tigers respond?

Doughty, Morgan, and Thompson were due up for LSU. Doughty grounded out to third for out No. 1. Morgan grounded out to second, and Thompson struck out as the Tigers fell 8-7. With that, the season is over for LSU. Southern Miss will advance to the super regional as a host and will play Ole Miss.

Tigers take down Kentucky in late-night SEC Tournament opener after numerous delays

The Tigers are moving on to the winner’s bracket after comfortably handling Kentucky despite a shaky start

After a long hiatus due to a first-round bye and a plethora of rain, the LSU Tigers finally got to take the field at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium and play in their first game in the SEC Tournament on Thursday night.

LSU got to skip the single-elimination round as it entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed. That meant that the Tigers would play the winner of No. 5 Auburn and No. 12 Kentucky.

Coming into the week, no No. 12 seed had ever won a game in the SEC tournament, but the Wildcats beat AU to set up a second-round matchup against LSU to begin double-elimination play. Their luck ran out on Thursday night, as LSU advanced into the winner’s bracket with an 11-6 victory.

It will face top-seeded Tennessee on Friday night in the third round in what will be the first matchup against the Volunteers this season.

[autotag]Ma’Khail Hilliard[/autotag] got the start on the mound for the Tigers, and Kentucky jumped on him in the top of the second inning with a two-run homer to take an early lead. But in the bottom of the third, LSU got those runs back, plus one.

With bases loaded, [autotag]Tre’ Morgan[/autotag] grounded out to the pitcher, but [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] was able to score. That was followed by the red hot [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag] hitting a two-RBI double to put LSU on top 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers put up three more runs to extend their lead to 6-2. Crews singled to center field to bring home [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag], [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] singled to bring home [autotag]Drew Bianco[/autotag], and Crews scored on an insane play at the plate where he dodged the catcher’s tag and eventually led to Kentucky’s head coach getting thrown out when the run was confirmed after video review.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the bases were loaded for Thompson, and he came through with a single to clear the bases and make it 8-2 Tigers. McManus then got his third hit of the night as he singled to bring Pearson home and make it 9-2 LSU.

Hilliard’s day was finished as the Tigers entered the top of the seventh inning with [autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] on the mound. For Fontenot, it was his 111th career appearance, which broke the record for most career appearances. Hilliard’s final line was six innings pitched allowing two runs on four hits, two walks and six strikeouts.

Kentucky scored a run on Fontenot to cut the lead to 9-3 as we went to the bottom of the seventh. Pearson became the first LSU player with five hits in an SEC Tournament game as he launched a two-run moonshot to right field to make it 11-3.

And oh yeah, he’s just a freshman.

In the top of the eighth inning, Kentucky hit a three-run homer to cut the lead to 11-6 and bring [autotag]Grant Taylor[/autotag] out of the bullpen. After retiring the first batter he faced for out number three, Taylor stayed on the mound for the ninth.

After walking the first batter of the ninth, Taylor was replaced by [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag], who was greeted with a single. Cooper retired the rest of the Wildcats, and the Tigers won 11-6.

With the victory, LSU will play in the winner’s bracket against No. 1 Tennessee on Friday night in the late game. That start time is TBD, but at least the forecast shows no sign of rain — for now.

Tigers drop the series to the Rebels after Game 2 loss on Saturday

It was not a good Saturday for LSU baseball as Ole Miss won both games to take the series.

After dropping Game 1 on Saturday morning by a 5-3 margin, LSU looked to tie the series up in Game 2. But Ole Miss was having none of that.

The Rebels took an early lead and never looked back as they beat LSU 11-1 to take the series. It’s the first conference series loss since losing to Arkansas in April. [autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] got the start on the mound for the Tigers and Ole Miss jumped on him early as they scored four runs in the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, [autotag]Grant Taylor[/autotag] came in to pitch for LSU and he was greeted with two singles, a strikeout, and a walk before he exited the game.

[autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] then came in out of the bullpen and after an error by the LSU infield, Ole Miss scored five more runs to take a 9-0 lead in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Money gave up his only earned run on a solo homer to make it 10-0 Rebels.

LSU finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] reached on a fielder’s choice and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] scored.

That would be the only run the Tigers scored in the game. The Rebels tacked on one more run in the top of the eighth inning after another LSU error making the final score 11-1.

It was not a good time to drop a series as we’re only a couple of weeks away from the SEC tournament as well as the NCAA announcing who is hosting regionals. LSU will look to avoid a sweep on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.

Fantastic Game 3 showing leads LSU to series win at Alabama

The Tigers captured their fourth win in their last five SEC series on Sunday.

After losing two out of their first three SEC series, the Tigers entered Sunday’s game in search of their fourth series win out of the last five as well as their third in a row.

They did just that in a 12-3 victory over Alabama in Game 3. [autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] got the start on the mound for LSU and like [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] on Saturday night, he was pulled in the first inning of the ballgame.

He did record two outs on two hits and one run before being pulled for [autotag]Jacob Hasty[/autotag]. In the top of the first inning, LSU got out to a hot start as it scored three runs off of a two-RBI single by [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] and an RBI single by [autotag]Drew Bianco[/autotag] to make it 3-0 headed to the bottom of the first. ‘Bama scored a run against Dutton in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit to two.

That score remained until the top of the fifth inning when LSU doubled its score with a Bianco RBI single and a two-run homer by [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag] to make it 6-1 headed to the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Eric Reyzelman[/autotag] came into pitch for Hasty.

Hasty’s final line was four innings pitched allowing two hits, zero runs, and four strikeouts. In the top of the seventh, LSU tacked on three more runs to extend the lead to 9-1. [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] reached on a fielder’s choice and Thompson scored. That was followed by another two-run McManus homer.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Alabama scored off of a solo home run to cut the lead to 9-2. In the top of the eighth inning, (stop me if you’ve read this before) but the Tigers scored three runs for the third time today. [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] (glad to have you back, pal) doubled to start the inning, [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] walked, and we got a Crews Missile to make it 12-2. That’s Dylan Crews’ third homer in the past two games.

[autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] came in to pitch the eighth and the ninth innings to try to close out the game. The first batter for the Tide in the ninth hit a solo homer to cut the lead to 12-3. That prompted [autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] to come trotting in out of the bullpen. Fontenot was able to get out of the inning while allowing no more runs. With the win, LSU moves to 32-15 (14-10 SEC). The next game will be May 10 against Southeastern Louisiana at Alex Box Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.

Tigers walk it off in ninth inning to take series vs. Georgia

The Tigers clinched a series win against the No. 11 Bulldogs on Saturday evening.

The Tigers wore their Sunday best to The Box as they took on the Georgia Bulldogs in the rubber match of the series on Sunday afternoon.

[autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] got the start on the mound and went 4.2 innings allowing two earned runs on four hits, four strikeouts and zero walks as the Tigers ultimately earned a walk-off win to take a crucial series win.

Crews missiles were flying out of the park in Game 3, and it all started in the bottom of the first when [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit a home run off the top of the scoreboard in left field to make it 1-0 LSU. In the top of the fifth inning, Georgia took their first lead of the game as it scored two runs against Dutton to take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Crews struck back with another solo homer to tie the game up at 2-2. The game remained that way until the top of the eighth inning when the ‘Dawgs scored an unearned run against [autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] to make it 3-2 Georgia.

LSU entered the bottom of the ninth inning with its back against the wall. If it wanted to win the series against Georgia, it would have to dig its way out of a 3-2 deficit with only three outs remaining.

[autotag]Jacob Berry [/autotag]was the first batter in the inning and he hit a single to left field on a 1-2 count to give the Tigers some hope. With the tying run on first base, Redshirt sophomore [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] stepped into the box.

The first pitch to him was taken for a ball. With a 1-0 count and the series on the line, Doughty showed up as he puckered up and kissed that baby goodbye.

He got a fastball right down Broadway, and he didn’t miss it. In dramatic fashion, the Tigers walked it off and clinched the series win over the Georgia Bulldogs 4-3.

With the win, LSU improves to 29-14 (12-9 SEC). The Tigers will play Nicholls at home Tuesday night before traveling to Tuscaloosa for a weekend series with the Crimson Tide starting next Friday.

LSU baseball takes Game 3 to sweep Missouri

The Tigers got back on track in the SEC with a weekend sweep of Missouri.

It was a busy day in Baton Rouge on Saturday as the LSU Tigers were looking for a series sweep of Missouri, and they got it with an 8-6 win in Game 3.

[autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] got the start on the mound, but after a first-inning error, Missouri hit a two-run home run to take an early 2-0 lead. Dutton had his shortest outing of the year as he was pulled from the game after pitching only 1.2 innings while allowing three hits, two runs and one walk with one strikeout.

But in the bottom of the third inning, [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] picked up where he left off Friday night with a solo home run to get the Tigers on the board.

That homer was followed by an RBI single for Josh Berry to tie the game 2-2 as we headed to the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, LSU took its first lead of the ballgame as they plated three runs. It started with a [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag] two-RBI double to make it 4-2 and that was followed by a [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] RBI single to make it 5-2.

In the top of the fifth inning, Missouri cut into the Tigers’ lead as it plated a run on an RBI single to make it 5-3. In the bottom of the fifth, LSU got that run right back as [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag] hit a home run of his own to extend the lead to 6-3 heading to the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit an RBI double to score Berry and make it 7-3 Tigers.

In the top of the eighth inning, Missouri scored a run on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 7-4. Then with runners on the corners and one out, [autotag]Josh Thompson[/autotag] made an error on a would-be ground ball and another run scored for Mizzou.

[autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] came in to pitch, and he walked a run home to make it 7-6. [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] came in to pitch with the bases loaded and two outs, and he got the first batter he faced to ground out to save the lead. In the bottom of the eighth, LSU got an insurance run as Pearson hit an RBI single to make it 8-6.

Cooper came back out to pitch the top of the ninth inning and try and close out the game and the series. He struck out the first batter, the second batter lined out and the third batter grounded out to end the game as the Tigers won 8-6 and swept Missouri.

With the win, LSU now has a record of 27-12 (10-8 SEC). The Tigers will play at New Orleans on Tuesday night before playing their next SEC series against Georgia next weekend at Alex Box Stadium.

LSU baseball drops the series to Auburn after Game 3 loss

LSU’s 6-4 loss on Saturday cost it a series loss at home.

Both LSU and Auburn entered Saturday’s Game 3 matchup with a lot on the line as the winner would take the series 2-1. In an all-Tiger matchup, who would prevail?

LSU started the day in their *Saturday* best gold unis and with [autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] on the mound. However, that wasn’t enough to take home a series win as AU clinched it with a 6-4 win in the rubber match.

For the first time this series, Auburn got on the board first as it plated a run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. LSU was able to tie the game in the bottom of the second as [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag].

In the top of the fourth inning, Auburn took the lead back and chased Dutton from the mound with LSU down 2-1. Dutton’s final line was 3.2 innings pitched, four hits, two runs, two walks, and three strikeouts.

In the top of the fifth inning, Sonny Dichiara hit a two-run home run against [autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] to make it 4-1 Auburn. In the bottom of the seventh inning, LSU cut into the Auburn lead thanks to a barrage of hits from the top of the lineup. [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] doubled, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] singled, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] was hit by a pitch, and Berry hit an RBI single to cut it to 4-3 after seven innings.

In the top of the eighth, Auburn was able to get both of those runs back with a couple of RBI singles to make it 6-3 as we headed to the bottom of the inning. Morgan was able to get a run back in the bottom of the inning as he hit a solo home run to cut it to 6-4.

Berry, [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], and Thompson were the three Tigers due up in the bottom of the ninth and they were charged with the task of trying to tie it up or walk it off. Berry started it off with a groundout. Jobert then grounded out. Thompson struck out swinging and that was the end of the game as LSU lost dropped the series.

With the loss, the Tigers move to 19-9 (4-5 SEC) on the year. The next game will be Tuesday night against Grambling with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT at Alex Box Stadium.
