No. 10 overall pick has produced greatness in recent drafts

Can the Browns find the next standout with the No. 10 pick?

When the Cleveland Browns make their selection with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, there are decent odds the player they draft emerges as a bona fide star.

Three of the last eight players selected with the No. 10 pick have emerged as All-Pros, impact talents on teams that made a Super Bowl appearance. Most notable is reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, who the Chiefs selected No. 10 overall in 2017.

Mahomes is joined by RB Todd Gurley (Rams, 2015) and CB Stephon Gilmore (Bills, 2012) as major success stories from the 10 spot. Gurley led the NFL in rushing TDs twice and has finished in the top 3 in rushing yards three times after racing to Offensive Rookie of the Year. Gilmore is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year and has emerged as the best CB in the NFL since moving from the Bills to the Patriots three seasons ago.

Four other No. 10 picks have been instantly productive starters from the last 10 years. Steelers LB Devin Bush, the 10th pick a year ago, racked up over 100 tackles and recovered four fumbles as an impact rookie in Pittsburgh. Cornerback Eli Apple has found a home as a good starter in New Orleans after being a bad fit with the Giants team that drafted him in 2016. Tight end Eric Ebron has his foibles but has also consistently been a top-10 producer at his position since the Lions tabbed him in 2014. Tyson Alualu has made a nice career as a solid starter for the Jaguars, the team that drafted the Cal DT in 2010, and the Steelers since signing in Pittsburgh as a free agent four years ago.

As for the others…

Josh Rosen has failed to seize upon opportunity in both Arizona, which took him No. 10 overall in 2018, and Miami after being traded by the Cardinals. He looks like a bust after two years, but he’ll get another shot.

Chance Warmack struggled with injuries and the speed of the NFL as a guard taken way too high in 2013. Blaine Gabbert flopped as a high-profile starting QB in Jacksonville as the 10th pick in 2011 but continues to hang around as a veteran backup.

In short, seven of the last 10 players taken at No. 10 overall have become at least good NFL players. Three have become All-Pros, and last year’s No. 10 appears poised to make it four. Only three have been flops.

Steelers land 2 on Draft Wire’s Top 50 rookies of 2019

The Steelers had two of the best rookies in the NFL last season.

Our friends over at Draft Wire ranked the 50 best rookies from the 2019 NFL season. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 2019 draft class was vital to the limited success the Steelers had last season. Out of the 50 top rookies on their list, two Steelers made it.

At No. 11 they had linebacker Devin Bush. Pittsburgh worked out a trade to move up 10 spots in order to land the former Michigan State star. Bush was solid all season and ended up the leading tackler on the team with 109 total tackles. Bush saw a dip is snaps mid-season to keep him fresh and his number of splash plays fell off a bit.

Moving down to No. 28 they had wide receiver Diontae Johnson. Johnson was the best receiver on the team for the bulk of the season. He led the team with 59 receptions and was second on the team with 680 receiving yards. He also led the team with five touchdown catches. Johnson, along with all the Steelers receivers on the team struggled due to inconsistent quarterback play.

Check out the ultimate highlights of Steelers LB Devin Bush

The Steelers put out an excellent highlight reel of Devin Bush.

Expectations were high for linebacker Devin Bush from the moment the Pittsburgh Steelers traded up to No. 10 to draft him last year. Fast forward to now and Bush’s rookie season is in the books. How did he do?

First, he led the Steelers in total tackles with 109. He made his presence felt from the first game of the season when he had 11 tackles against the New England Patriots.

The Steelers put our a great video of Bush’s ultimate highlights of 2019. It’s just what we all need to help us get through what promises to be a very long offseason. These highlights are just a taste of what we expect to see from Bush in 2020.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2019 review: Inside linebackers

Overall the inside linebackers were solid for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

One of the biggest moves of the 2019 offseason/season for the Pittsburgh Steelers was the trade up in the first round to land linebacker Devin Bush. The cost was high but the Steelers knew what kind of playmaker they were getting. The Steelers also made a free agent move when they signed Mark Barron. All this was with the hope these guys could replace Ryan Shazier. Did they do it? The short answer is sort of.

Here’s a look back at the inside linebackers from last season.

Devin Bush

Pittsburgh’s super rookie was as advertised last season as he led the team in tackles with 109. He didn’t make the volume of splash plays some might have expected but his overall production was solid. The Steelers managed Bush’s snaps in the middle of the season, I assume in hopes of having him fresh later on down the line. It will be interesting to see how Bush’s development will impact roster decisions with the rest of these players.

Mark Barron

It was confounding how the Steelers kept trotting Barron out onto the field despite his struggles and lack of effort. Despite finishing with 82 tackles and three sacks, it will be the missteps we remember Barron for. He has to be one of the guys on the roster bubble due to his salary.

Vince Williams

With Barron and Bush, Williams got somewhat lost in the shuffle last season. Williams only started eight games and finished with only 52 tackles. We get he’s not as athletic as Barron but given the circumstances, Williams ability to stuff the run and play with maximum intensity on every play.

Tyler Matakevich

Matakevich continued to be a star on special teams while offering very little on defense. No one expects big things from Matakevich on defense but with him being an unrestricted free agent this offseason it will be interesting to see if Pittsburgh chooses to go in a different direction.

Steelers land 1 on PFWA All-Rookie team

Devin Bush makes the PFWA All-Rookie team and Diontae Johnson gets snubbed.

The Pro Football Writers Association of America announced their rookie awards for the 2019 NFL season. The Pittsburgh Steelers landed one player on the list but maybe not the one your think. Wide receiver Diontae Johnson was one of the best rookie wide outs all season and even earned an All-Pro as a punt returner but didn’t make the All-Rookie team at all.

Instead, it was linebacker Devin Bush who made it after leading the Steelers with 109 total tackles.

Here is the full All-Rookie team.

Devin Bush wins Joe Greene Award as Steelers top rookie

Devin Bush has had a tremendous rookie season.

Every season, members of the Pittsburgh media vote on the top rookie for the Steelers and this season they have given the award to linebacker Devin Bush. This is voted on by the Pittsburgh chapter of the PFWA.

Bush is currently second on the team in total tackles with 97 and also has one sack, one forced fumble and two interceptions. NFL.com has Bush with 14 sacks but he is part of a three-man rotation with Vince Williams and Mark Barron.

Bush saw a mid-season dip in his reps which took him out of the conversation for defensive rookie of the year and his number of big plays have come to a screeching halt.

Pittsburgh had several rookies in consideration including wide receiver Diontae Johnson. Johnson currently leads the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Leaning on Sam Darnold’s arm among 4 keys to Jets’ offense against Steelers

Sam Darnold’s performance typically ties directly to the Jets offense’s ability to score points this season.

Despite the box score, the Jets’ offense looked decent against the Ravens in Week 14.

New York moved the ball well, but it failed to capitalize on a couple of quality scoring opportunities. The Steelers will be another tough test, featuring a third-ranked in total defensive DVOA per Football Outsiders and top-five pass and run defense DVOA. The Jets will need to lean on Sam Darnold to execute the offense and find gaps in the defense.

The biggest issue will be pass protection against one of the most ferocious pass rushes in the league. Pittsburgh knows how to get to the quarterback thanks to breakout linebacker T.J. Watt as well as defensive tackle Cameron Heyward and rookie linebacker Devin Bush. If the Jets can give Darnold room to operate behind the line of scrimmage they could find ways to score.

With that being said, let’s take a look at what it’s going to take for New York’s offense to thrive in Week 16.

Get Sam Darnold going

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Without a reliable running game, the Jets need their young quarterback to step up and build sustained drives to put them in a position to put points on the board.

The Jets are significantly better when the passing game is clicking. They’re 5-1 and are averaging 22 points per game when Darnold throws for at least 250 yards. New York 1-6 and with 13.1 points per game when he totals below 250 passing yards.

Darnold looked solid against a tough Ravens defense despite only mustering 14 points. He led the Jets deep into Ravens territory five times, but a missed field goal, a failed fourth-down conversion and an interception took three potential scores off the board. The Steelers provide an equally difficult test as they allow only 204.1 passing yards per game and haven’t allowed at more than 250 passing yards since Week 6.

Steelers LB Devin Bush’s mom announces he’s Pro Bowl alternate

Devin Bush might be heading to the Pro Bowl.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a bold move in the 2019 NFL draft to go up and get linebacker Devin Bush. It wasn’t a difficult choice considering how badly the Steelers needed to replace Ryan Shazier and how dynamic Bush was on film.

And despite a dip in snaps over several games this season, Bush is still second on the team in tackles with 92 and has flashed what is going to be a very long successful career. This is something the NFL recognized as well. According to Bush’s mom, he was selected as an alternate to the Pro Bowl.
