Former Oregon 5-star QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has competition at Cal

Former Oregon Ducks 5-star quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has some competition at Cal, with Ohio State’s Devin Brown transferring in.

One of the biggest wins for Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks on National Signing Day a month ago was getting a commitment from 5-star quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who flipped from the California Golden Bears at the last minute to sign in Eugene.

Just a few weeks later, though, Sagapolutele made the surprising announcement that he would be entering the transfer portal after going through bowl practices with the Ducks and going to the Rose Bowl against the Ohio State Buckeyes with the team on New Year’s Day.

The reasoning, according to Sagapolutele, was that he wanted to be somewhere where he was valued more, and had a better chance to win the starting job as a true freshman. In Eugene, that was going to be hard to do with Dante Moore seemingly in line to be an elite passer for Oregon in 2025.

This led to Sagapolutele transferring to Cal, where everything started. In Berkely, the 5-star freshman would have a pretty clear route to stepping in as a first-year starter and cutting his teeth early in his career in the ACC.

That is, until this past week.

After Ohio State’s national championship win, backup quarterback Devin Brown announced his transfer to the Golden Bears, where he is now expected to be in the mix to take over as the starter, if not the front-runner in that conversation. While Brown has had little experience with the Buckeyes — 331 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT in 17 games — he is still a former 4-star recruit who was rated as the No. 5 QB in the 2022 recruiting class.

At Cal, both Brown and Sagapolutele will now compete for the starting spot under Justin Wilcox and offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin.

If Sagapolutele does not win the starting job, it may be frustrating for him, seeing as that was one of the primary reasons he ended up leaving Eugene and the opportunity to be developed by Will Stein behind.

It will certainly make for an interesting spring QB competition to watch.

Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown chooses transfer destination

Good luck to Brown. #GoBucks

Now that the college football season is complete, with the Ohio State football program taking home the program’s ninth-ever national championship, we’re going to hear about NFL draft declarations and some transfer news. After all, it’s a year-round news cycle now, and although many in Buckeye Nation are still basking in the glow of all the glory Monday night, the world doesn’t stop spinning.

We already knew that backup quarterback Devin Brown had entered the transfer portal, but he stayed on board to finish up the national championship run. We hear rumors of his transfer destination, but nothing was official … until now.

According to multiple reports, Brown has decided to transfer to Cal after three years wearing the Scarlet and Gray. Had he decided to stay, it was unlikely that he would be handed the starting job with Julian Sayin’ the likely solution for next year, with five-star prospect Tavien St. Clair as well as  Lincoln Kienholz also in the mix.

Brown should be commended for sticking things out in Columbus and it’s hard to blame him for making this move at this time. He will have every opportunity to win the starting job next year in Berkley.

One program is gaining steam for Ohio State football transfer QB Devin Brown

The Cal Bears appear to be the frontrunner for Devin Brown, an Ohio State transfer quarterback. However, no decision has been made yet.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have numerous talented quarterbacks on their current roster. While they did have an early-season quarterback battle, it always seemed like Will Howard was the answer.

What is up next for the program? That’s a good question, and the path seems clear. It could very well be Julian Sayin next season and then eventually five-star Class of 2025 commit Tavien St. Clair.

That leaves current quarterback Devin Brown without a real opportunity, and he’s expected to hit the transfer portal once this season is over. California is apparently in the mix for Brown.

Brown has not committed to a program yet, although there have been reports of his interest in Cal. Unfortunately, Brown hasn’t been able to get much traction in Columbus.

He played two games as a freshman and then six as a sophomore. This season, he’s been able to get into nine games and throw for 114 yards and a touchdown. That’s not ample playing time, so it isn’t surprising he could end up elsewhere.

Cal joined the ACC this past season and ended with the fourth-worst record at 2-6 and had a 6-7 overall record. Brown should be able to transfer and be the top option for that Power 4 side.

Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown refutes rumors of commitment

No news yet #GoBucks

Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown announced that he would be entering the transfer portal earlier in December but would stay with the team until the playoff run was complete. Recently, rumors were running wild on social media that Brown had made his decision on a new home and would be heading to the West Coast to join the Cal Bears. However, Brown has come out and said there is no truth to those rumors.

The backup quarterback for the Buckeyes says he is focused on helping his current team win and go as far as they can in the College Football Playoff. Because he is staying with OSU for the playoff run, he hasn’t even had time to visit other schools at this time. A blind commitment seems like a longshot for both Brown and any school hoping to bring in a transfer.

In a world where reporters are eager to be the first to get breaking news out, it often happens that the breaking news isn’t accurate. That seems to be the case here. So much so that Brown himself had to address the rumors and rightfully so. If other teams think he’s already committed elsewhere, they may not feel as inclined to reach out.

It says a lot about Brown’s character and love of his teammates. He’s effectively putting his future on hold for the sake of others. Some college program is going to get an outstanding leader on and off the field. Ohio State fans will be proud to call Devin Brown a Buckeye for life.

Ohio State quaterback Devin Brown set to enter transfer portal

Good luck young man #GoBucks

Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown announced that he will enter the transfer portal to find greener pastures. Brown stated he will stay with the team through the OSU playoff run to honor his commitment.

Brown came into Ohio State as the No. 6 rated quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class but could never quite get his footing. After redshirting his freshman season, he was beaten out by Kyle McCord in 2023 and was unable to beat out transfer Will Howard this year.

Brown had an opportunity to show what he could do as the starter last year in the Cotton Bowl against Missouri but lasted only four possessions before sustaining an ankle injury that would prevent him from playing the majority of the game. Brown decided to stay even after Ryan Day hit the portal looking for a new quarterback to help lead the Buckeyes in 2024.

However, with speculation that current freshman Julian Sayin will be the starter in Columbus next season, Brown has decided it’s time to move on.

No one can blame Brown for entering the portal to see what he can be as a starter somewhere. He has shown what it means to be a true Buckeye over three years facing adversity over and over again. Brown will have two years of eligibility remaining with whatever team he joins.

Brown makes the fourth Ohio State player to enter the portal this season joining receivers Jayden Ballard and Kojo Antwi, along with linebacker Gabe Powers,

Ryan Day updates quarterback competition

Who do you think the starter will be? #GoBucks

It’s one of the biggest questions for the Ohio State football team as we head into summer and count down the days before preseason camp, and ultimately, the beginning of the 2024 season, one in which the Buckeyes look loaded and ready to make a run at some pretty special things.

Who will be the starting quarterback for this year’s version of the Ohio State Buckeyes?

Day has gone on record stating he would like to have a starter named before things get too far along, but so far, no news has come out despite most people believing it will be incoming Kansas State transfer, Will Howard.

The Ohio State head coach held a press conference last week and inquiring football minds wanted to know where the competition for the gunslinger of the offense stood. Despite the unscheduled press conference, Day was non-committal on where the situation stands in the quarterback room when asked about it.

“Really no update,” Day said. “We’ve really been busy here in June. June’s been busy in recruiting, but also with our team. To say coming out of the spring and where we are right now that there is a lot of movement at any position wouldn’t be accurate. We’ll work hard, and there will be a lot of progress made with Mick in the weight room, but we will not really know much until we get into the preseason.”

So there you have it. The news on the quarterback battle on the banks of the Olentangy is that there’s really no news. However, we feel pretty confident that the pecking order is probably Howard, Devin Brown and then Julian Sayin. But, hey, that’s unofficial and when we hear more coming out of the Woody, we’ll let you know.

Ohio State cracks top three in On3’s quarterback unit rankings

What do you think about the current quarterback room for Ohio State? #GoBucks

For the second straight season the starting quarterback job for the Ohio State football team isn’t set in stone. With a lot of talent in the quarterback room, head coach Ryan Day will have a big decision on his hands when it comes time to decide which quarterback to roll with.

On3’s college football columnist, Jesse Simonton, is high on Ohio State’s options at quarterback headed into next season as he ranked the Buckeyes second on his quarterback unit rankings in an article released last week.

Ohio State’s quarterback room has a great mix of experience and young talent giving the Buckeyes a lot of good options at the position for the 2024 season and beyond.

Will Howard is the favorite to land the starting position for 2024 as the Kansas State transfer made 34 appearances and 27 starts in his four seasons with the Wildcats. He threw for 2,643 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while adding 351 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground in 2023.

Julian Sayin, the top ranked quarterback in the 2024 class who transferred to the Buckeyes from Alabama after Nick Saban’s retirement has received high praise in the spring practice period and even shed his black stripe in April.

It would be a remarkable feat for a true freshman to start at quarterback for the Buckeyes but Sayin has the talent to at least compete for the job this season and has a bright future moving forward.

Devin Brown, who backed up Kyle McCord last season is another option.  The former four-star recruit in the 2022 class made six appearances last season and had a solid showing at the spring game in April.

The Buckeyes also have two good developmental quarterbacks in Lincoln Kienholz and Air Noland. Kienholz was a four-star recruit in the 2023 class. Noland, also a high four-star, will have his first season with the Buckeyes in the fall. Each of them likely won’t contend for the starting job this season but could also be a factor in the future.

Ohio State football vs Missouri: Five observations halftime review

Ohio State football vs Missouri: Five observations halftime review #GoBucks

Welcome to halftime of the Cotton Bowl and despite the low score, the Ohio State Buckeyes are in solid position with a 3-0 lead over the Missouri Tigers. It isn’t all doom and gloom despite what is being shared on social media. This Missouri team is extremely talented and Ohio State is dealing with injuries at the quarterback position.

It is a bit odd that Ryan Day is refusing to open up the playbook at all, but I want to reserve my anger until the second half. We have seen Devin Brown struggle and then get hurt and a true freshman in Lincoln Kienholz, who is clearly not ready, be not allowed to throw the ball, which is very odd given the constantly stacked boxes.

Again, it sounds like I am upset, but I am really not, I feel that the Buckeyes are in good position going into halftime and I am very excited to see what Ryan Day comes up with in the second half. Let’s dive into he top five most interesting topics from the first half.

Watch: Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown plays role of Santa for teammates

What a great gesture by the new Buckeye starting quarterback

One of the unfortunate parts of Ohio State football’s bowl matchup against Missouri is the timing of the game, it is happening during the week of Christmas.

That means many of the players will be away from their families, but Ohio State quarterback [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag] tried to make his teammates feel like they were at home. The newly elevated starting Buckeye quarterback gifted his teammates JBL speakers, and not just his protectors, the whole team.

It’s a small gesture, but one that could very well go a long way as Brown is trying to gain the trust of his teammates as he prepares to start his first ever game for Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl against Missouri.

Ohio State players seem to know who the starting quarterback will be in the Cotton Bowl

This isn’t surprising

After Ohio State football quarterback Kyle McCord entered the transfer portal, leaving QB1 vacant for the Buckeyes, many wondered who was going to be head coach Ryan Day’s guy.

Although there was no official announcement, when [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag] spoke to the media on Tuesday afternoon, he may have tipped Day’s hand, saying that he was excited to get the opportunity to play.

Brown addressed the burn the boat tweet, explained that he was surprised by McCord leaving the program, his ankle injury, and plenty more. What stood out to me the most was the leadership aspect of the position and fulling taking the reins of winning over his teammates.

It’s going to be an exciting bowl game for the Buckeyes, especially considering Brown’s teammates have complimented his ability.

Personally, I hope Brown does well, but also getting to see what [autotag]Lincoln Kienholz[/autotag] can do. December 29 just got much more interesting.
