Red Wings at Lightning projected goalies

Alex Lyon (18-16-4, 3.03 GAA, .905 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (28-16-2, 2.85 GAA, .900 SV%, 2 SO)

Lyon was decent last time out in Florida, allowing just 2 goals on 38 shots. After struggling earlier in the month, allowing 4 or more goals in 5 of his 1st 6 starts, he has allowed just 7 goals on 100 shots in his past 3 outings. Lyon is 0-7-2 with a 4.03 GAA and .884 SV% in 9 starts in March.

Vasilevskiy has been on fire in the past month, allowing just a single goal each in 3 of his past 4 outings. He is 8-1-1 with a 2.39 GAA and .915 SV% with 1 SO in 10 starts in March. Vasilevskiy was still recovering from back surgery until late November, and he missed the 1st game in Detroit Oct. 14, while he was rested in the 2nd meeting in late January.

Red Wings at Lightning picks and predictions

Prediction

Lightning 4, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

The Lightning (-190) are just a little too pricey on the moneyline, costing you almost 2 times your potential return.

Yes, the Red Wings (+155) have won both meetings this season, and 2 of the past 3 trips to the Suncoast, but Detroit has been horrific in March, and Vasilevskiy and the Lightning have played very, very well.

PASS, and look to the puck line instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

The LIGHTNING -1.5 (+130) is a strong play on the puck line. While Tampa Bay has lost both meetings this season, it will have a red-hot Vasilevskiy in the crease for the 1st time against the Red Wings +1.5 (-155) this season.

In the final 2 meetings last season, when Tampa Bay was making a postseason push, and Detroit was well out of it, the Lightning posted a pair of shutouts against the Red Wings, outscoring Detroit 8-0. We might not get a shutout, but Tampa is a strong play on the puck line at plus-money.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-110) is worth a look, mainly because Vasilevskiy has been red hot in March, while the Red Wings have really struggled lately on offense.

As it stands, the Under is 3-1 in the past 4 meetings, and 3-1 in the past 4 battles at Amalie Arena, too. The total has gone low in 3 of the past 4 skates for the Red Wings while cashing in 3 straight for the Lightning.

Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Detroit Red Wings (2-7-2) and Tampa Bay Lightning (6-1-1) play for the second time in three days at Amalie Arena Friday. Puck drop is scheduled for shortly after 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Red Wings-Lightning NHL odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

Red Wings at Lightning: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:45 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Red Wings +280 (bet $100 to win $280) | Lightning -360 (bet $360 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Red Wings +1.5 (+100) | Lightning -1.5 (-120)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -125 | U: +105)

Red Wings at Lightning: Projected starting goalies

Thomas Greiss (0-6-2, .885 SV%, 3.46 GAA) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (6-1-1, .927 SV%, 1.99 GAA)

Greiss was yanked after allowing 3 goals on just 6 shots in 5:36 of action against the Lightning Wednesday. His replacement, Calvin Pickard, wasn’t a whole lot more impressive with 2 goals allowed on 21 shots in relief against a then-mostly disinterested Bolts side. Greiss has allowed 3 goals in each of his last four appearances and in six of eight games overall.

Vasilevskiy has played all eight games for the Lightning, but he has had some rest due to a postponed game last month. He stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced Wednesday in a partial night off.

Red Wings at Lightning: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lightning 5, Red Wings 1

Money line (ML)

The oddsmakers aren’t expecting anything different from what we saw Wednesday and neither should bettors. The defending Stanley Cup champion Lightning outshot the Red Wings 27-16 and did all their scoring in the first 32 minutes of the game before coasting to victory.

Still, we need to PASS on a money line bet as the -360 odds for the Lightning are far too steep for a regular-season NHL game.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Tampa Bay finished Wednesday’s game with 56% of all shot attempts, including blocked and missed shots, and 54.76% of the scoring chances at 5-on-5.

Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play Wednesday. We can expect a better performance from the Lightning’s special teams, as they are 15th in the NHL with a success rate of 20.69% with the man advantage.

Back the LIGHTNING -1.5 (-120) even though it’s extremely rare to be paying into the vig for a 2-goal win on the puck line.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 5.5 (-125). This line isn’t anticipating the Red Wings providing much to the combined goal total and the Lightning will again be doing the bulk of the scoring.

That’s just fine in what can be expected to be a rematch between the goalies. Greiss should have a stronger performance, but the overall result won’t be much different.

Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Detroit Red Wings (2-6-2) travel to meet the Tampa Bay Lightning (5-1-1) at Amalie Arena Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. ET puck drop. Below, we analyze the Red Wings-Lightning NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Red Wings at Lightning: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:10 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Red Wings +250 (bet $100 to win $250) | Lightning -300 (bet $300 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Red Wings +1.5 (-110) | Lightning -1.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Red Wings at Lightning: Projected starting goalies

Thomas Greiss (0-5-2, 3.03 GAA, .897 SV%) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (5-1-1, 2.14 GAA, .925 SV%)

Greiss allowed three goals on 30 shots in Sunday’s home loss against the Florida Panthers. He was close, but no cigar, which has been the case all season. Greiss has allowed three or fewer goals in each of his six starts. The Red Wings have managed a total of eight total goals of offensive support in six starts.

Vasilevskiy is coming off a pair of wins against the Nashville Predators, including a 29-save effort in a 5-2 win Monday. He has really had just one poor outing all season, coughing up four goals on 27 shots in a 5-2 loss at Columbus on Jan. 23.

Red Wings at Lightning: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lightning 5, Red Wings 1

Money line (ML)

The Lightning (-300) will cost you three times your potential return, which isn’t a great long-term betting strategy. Remember, last season, although they were using backup goaltender Curtis McElhinney, the Lightning lost March 8 against the Red Wings in the most recent matchup as -270 favorites. AVOID, and look to the puck line.

Against the spread (ATS)

The LIGHTNING -1.5 (-110) are significant favorites, as you rarely have to still lay money when playing a puck line unless as team is a favorite of roughly -280 or so. Even so, it’s a value play, as the Red Wings do not have the horses to keep up with the high-octane Lightning. Three of Tampa’s first wins this season have also covered the puck line, including last time out against Nashville Monday.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-120) is the way to go, as the Lightning could possibly cash the Over all on their own on a good night. Tampa will have to do the heavy lifting, but if the Red Wings can cobble together a goal or two, this Over should cash rather easily. The Over is 3-1 in the past four for Tampa Bay. The Under is 6-2 across the past eight for Detroit, but the Over is 2-1 in its past three road affairs.
