Lions injury update: CB Amani Oruwariye still sidelined

CB Amani Oruwariye was still sidelined with 7 Lions players limited in Thursday’s practice

The Detroit Lions could be without their top cornerback when traveling to Atlanta to face Matt Ryan and the Falcons in Week 16. Amani Oruwariye was missing from Detroit’s practice for the second straight day on Thursday.

Oruwariye, who leads the Lions with six interceptions and is also fourth in solo tackles on the team, has a thumb injury that could keep him out of Sunday’s game. He was one of two Lions defenders to miss both days of practice this week. Reserve LB Josh Woods (neck) has also not practiced.

Seven other Lions were limited in Thursday’s session in Allen Park:

  • LG Jonah Jackson (back)
  • WR Kalif Raymond (shoulder)
  • LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin (shoulder)
  • DE Michael Brockers (knee)
  • RB D’Andre Swift (shoulder)
  • OLB Julian Okwara (ankle)
  • WR Josh Reynolds (thigh)

Okwara’s status represents an upgrade, as the reserve pass rusher was out on Wednesday.

The injury report does not include the players who are idled due to COVID-19 protocols. That list unfortunately still includes starting QB Jared Goff. Wide receiver Trinity Benson joined the reserve/COVID-19 list as well after testing positive on Thursday.

Vegas watch: Lions open as slight underdogs vs. Falcons in Week 16

The Detroit Lions open as slight underdogs vs. the Atlanta Falcons in Week 16

Fresh off one of the most impressive wins the franchise has notched in years, the Detroit Lions hit the road for Week 16 with a trip to Atlanta. Sunday’s 30-12 domination of the Arizona Cardinals appears to have impacted the perception of the Lions, based on the opening betting lines.

At Tipico Sportsbook, the Lions opened the wagering week as 3.5-point underdogs in Atlanta. With the home team typically getting a 3-point bump, it indicates the oddsmakers see the 2-11-1 Lions and 6-8 Falcons as an effective coin flip game.

  • Money line: Lions +170 (bet $100 to win $170) | Falcons -210 (bet $210 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Lions +3.5 (-103) | Falcons -3.5 (-117)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 44.5 (O: -103 | U: -117)

After the Week 14 win despite being 13.5-point underdogs, the Lions are now 10-4 against the spread in 2021.

Lions surrendered two of the fastest sacks of 2020 in Week 7

Keanu Neal and Deion Jones landed devastatingly quick sacks on Stafford

Winning in epic comeback fashion is great. Needing an epic comeback to beat a one-win Falcons team with an interim coaching staff means the Detroit Lions still have some work to do. And one of the biggest chores is to shore up the A-gap blitz protection in front of Matthew Stafford.

The Falcons exploited the Lions weakness in the Week 7 matchup and did it very well. Deion Jones and Keanu Neal each recorded devastatingly quick sacks on Stafford right up the gut. In fact, their sacks rank among the fastest sacks recorded all season, per Next Gen Stats tracking.

Neal’s sack happened in just 2.2 seconds from the snap. It’s the fastest sack in Week 7 and the second-quickest sack recorded all season. Only Aaron Donald in Week 5 got the QB on the ground faster.

Jones finished off Stafford in 2.44 seconds, the second-fastest sack of the week and the 8th-fastest all season. Like Neal, Jones was untouched going right through the middle of the line.

On the more positive side, Romeo Okwara’s sack of Matt Ryan in 2.8 seconds was the fourth-fastest, and he did it without benefit of the schematic blitz.

Detroit Lions pivotal play of the game: Gurley score allows Lions comeback

The Detroit Lions beat the Atlanta Falcons and it was a mistake committed by Todd Gurley that ended up being the pivotal play this week

WHAT. A. GAME!

The Detroit Lions pulled off a miracle to beat the Atlanta Falcons 23-22 — with Matthew Stafford throwing an 11-yard game-winning touchdown pass to T.J. Hockenson, capped off by a go-ahead extra point from Matt Prater as time expired.

The Lions run defense showed up again this week, only allowing 66 yards on the ground, making the Falcons’ offense one-dimensional. The Lions did allow the Falcons to sustain long drives, but most of the day, they were able to hold their own and made key plays to give the Lions’ offense more opportunities.

The Lions offense did have some questionable play-calling, especially in the run game, but most good old No. 9 stepped up in the spotlight when it mattered. At the end of the day, the Lions’ players didn’t falter down the stretch and brought home a victory.

The pivotal play

For a minute, it looked like the curtains had closed on a potential Lions comeback.

After a Falcons first down conversion and the Lions out of timeouts, the Lions defense made the decision to allow Falcons running back Todd Gurley to score in order to get the ball back into the hands of the Lions offense.

Falcons coach Raheem Morris commented after the game that the plan was for Gurley to take go down on the one-yard line, but as Gurley tried to stay out of the endzone, he lost his balance and fell into the end zone for the touchdown.

That produced a rare NFL moment where the defense celebrated an opponent scoring a touchdown:

That score gave the Lions offense 1:04 left on the game clock to muster a drive to win this game potentially.

It was a long shot, but don’t tell that to Stafford. He drove the offense down the field bringing back memories of previous 4th quarter comebacks and showing glimpses of what we have been begging for this season.

After completing a couple of nice passes to Hockenson and Danny Amendola along with some spikes sprinkled in for clock management, Stafford found Golladay deep in the red zone on a beautiful 29-yard pass to put the Lions within reach if evening the game up.

There was a heart-stopping moment when they reviewed the catch — and bad memories of the 10-second run-off were running through every Lions fans heads — but it was clear Golladay made the catch. Luckily when the ruling came back, the play stood and the Lions would get the ball with just three seconds remaining.

After another spike gave the Lions more time to come with the perfect play, and as the clock expired, Stafford weaved his way through pressure and fired a dart to Hockenson to tie the game.

Amendola was flagged for a bone head unsportsmanlike conduct penalty — he took his helmet off while on the field — making the extra point a 48-yarder instead of a 33-yarder, but was no problem for Prater as he sailed it through the uprights and gave the Lions a sweet comeback victory to get them to .500 on the season.

Celebrate the win, Lions fans.

Some areas need addressing, but it was wonderful to see vintage Stafford and the run defense continuing their dominance. The Lions will ride their two-game winning streak back home to face the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8.

Experts abandon the Lions against the Falcons in Week 7

The Detroit Lions are on the road to face the Atlanta Falcons and according to experts they believe the Lions will suffer another defeat

The Detroit Lions continue their road trip, this time heading to Atlanta to face the Falcons in Week 7. The last time these two teams met, the Falcons got the better of the Lions with a 30-26 victory and introduced us to the 10-second runoff.

The Lions had a convincing win over the Jaguars last week, but the experts are not convinced the Lions have turned it around enough to beat the Falcons. According to NFL Pickwatch, 65% of the experts at the time of this writing favor Atlanta to hand the Lions their fourth loss of the season.

Last week, the experts were riding high with the Lions to beat the Jaguars, but this week, they have flipped the script. There is no arguing the Falcons are better than the Jaguars, but this is a Falcons team that just secured their first victory last week against a Minnesota Vikings team who looks to be packing it in already this season. Which begs the question: are the Falcons that good or were the Vikings were just that bad.

The Falcons have a high powered offense that possesses many weapons and ever since Julio Jones returned from injury, Matt Ryan has looked like the playmaker we are used to seeing. Fortunately for the Lions, the Falcons defense is vulnerable, especially in the air where they are 31st in the league in pass yards allowed and last in passing touchdowns allowed.

It is hard to tell if the Lions’ victory last week was a fluke due to an extra week of preparation or if there are actually figuring everything out. The defensive performance was eye-catching after allowing only 44 yards rushing. While, the offense had their best rushing game of the season, mustering 180 yards on the ground. There were some hiccups along the way, but there was plenty to work with heading into this matchup.

The Lions will have their hands full with the Falcons, but this is a game the Lions could win. If they can repeat their performance from last week, and follow the key concepts in this week’s Honolulu Blueprint, they can make their way to .500 on the season and stay in the hunt.
