Alabama CB Dezz Ricks officially enters the transfer portal

Dezz Ricks did not appear in any games for the Crimson Tide last season.

We talk a lot about guys in the transfer portal that LSU should definitely go after. This one is a no-brainer.

[autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag] had LSU as one of his final schools on his signing day but he chose to go to Alabama instead. Now that Nick Saban has retired, Ricks has entered his name into the transfer portal.

Ricks was a five-star cornerback in the 2023 recruiting class and he had narrowed his list down to LSU, Alabama and Florida on his signing day. He chose to go with Saban over LSU but he now has a chance to go to the bayou. This is a position of need for the Tigers and a kid that they were very high on in last year’s recruiting class. It makes a lot of sense for [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] to go after him.

Ricks did not appear in any games for the Crimson Tide last season so he will go to his next school with four years of eligibility left.

Roll Tide: Ranking Alabama’s top 10 recruits from the class of 2023

Here are the Crimson Tide’s top 10 recruits from the class of 2023.

For now, Georgia has taken the crown as the most dominant team in college football. However, Alabama remains a powerhouse program on the field and in the recruiting game, where they put together the No. 1 ranked group of 2023 prospects in the nation.

Here are the Crimson Tide’s top 10 recruits from the class of 2023.

Where LSU’s recruiting class stands in the 247Sports Composite Rankings after the early signing period

The Tigers are just outside the top five nationally following the early signing period.

The three-day early signing period is officially in the books as LSU turns its attention to a Citrus Bowl contest against Purdue on Jan. 2 and welcoming its early enrollees to campus.

Early signing day was a bit anti-climactic for Tigers fans. Coach Brian Kelly’s staff lost out on the sweepstakes for [autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag], a five-star IMG Academy cornerback who picked Alabama. It also failed to land uncommitted four-star Mississippi defensive back [autotag]Isaac Smith[/autotag], who pledged to Mississippi State, and it lost one commit in cornerback [autotag]Daylen Austin[/autotag], who flipped to Oregon.

However, it wasn’t all bad. LSU pulled a flip of their own, bringing in Vanderbilt tight end commit [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag], and it signed all 25 of its commits, excluding Austin.

The Tigers aren’t necessarily done yet as the normal signing period opens in February. They will have at least one target committing then in five-star athlete [autotag]Nyckoles Harbor[/autotag].

But the Tigers are mostly done in 2023, and we have a good idea of what this class is going to look like when it’s all said and done. Here’s where it ranks in the 247Sports Composite Rankings after the early signing period.

LSU’s recruiting class is good, but it’s still a step away from elite

Brian Kelly and LSU are still a step away from recruiting at an elite level.

When [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] first took the job at LSU, people questioned his ability to recruit Louisiana. I didn’t think it was fair.

Kelly brought talent from all over the country to Notre Dame and was a proven winner. He was going to be fine at LSU — a place that recruits itself. Kelly doesn’t have to be a genius to bring talent to campus. He knows that, too, and it’s a large piece of why he took the job.

His first real recruiting cycle demonstrated competency. He put together a good staff and landed a top-10 class. It’s well-rounded and balanced. It’s got top talent from Louisiana and from around the country.

It’s a really good class and on par with what we’ve come to expect from LSU. It’s hard to lodge any complaints, especially with what LSU could be set to do in the portal.

However, it’s still a step away from being elite.

LSU lost ground with some priority targets late in the cycle. [autotag]Joshua Mickens[/autotag] and [autotag]Darron Reed[/autotag], both once committed to LSU, ended up at Ohio State and Auburn.

[autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag], a five-star corner who once looked Baton Rouge bound, threw on an Alabama hat. At quarterback, LSU swung and missed at some of the cycles best players.

Again, that’s nitpicking. Despite missing on Mickens and Reed, LSU brought in a couple of blue-chip edge rushers. Despite missing on Ricks, LSU landed five-star [autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag] and plucked [autotag]Denver Harris[/autotag] from the portal.

What Kelly and staff did is better than good enough, but it’s not elite. LSU is still a notch below fellow SEC programs like Alabama and Georgia. Nick Saban just signed what could be his most talented class yet, and Georgia continued to do its thing.

Classes like that year in and year out are why Alabama and Georgia are always in the playoff discussion. They’ve built titans.

Now, winning a championship doesn’t require a top-two class every year. LSU beat Alabama this year with a far less talented team. LSU’s 2019 title was built with recruiting classes similar to LSU’s 2023 class. Clemson’s won titles without winning recruiting classes too.

TCU and Michigan are in the playoff, and neither of those programs out-recruited Saban and Kirby. But being at the top every year requires a class to the level of Alabama and Georgia.

LSU wasn’t able to replace what it lost after 2019 and the last two years have shown us what Clemson looks like without a top QB prospect. When you don’t land a top-three class, you’re banking on too much to go right.

You’re hoping that three stars will turn into [autotag]Justin Jefferson[/autotag]. You’re hoping that your quarterback plays to the level of [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] or [autotag]Trevor Lawrence[/autotag]. It’s foolish to rely on those things.

Celebrate it when it happens, but it’s not a sustainable strategy for programs that want to build dynasties of their own. LSU’s 2024 class is already in a great spot, though its hard to gather any takeaways this early in the cycle.

I didn’t expect LSU to have a top-three class this year. This isn’t a disappointment or a critique. I’m not even saying a top two or three class should be the expectation or the standard.

LSU doesn’t need to be in the playoff discussion every year for fans to be satisfied. The standard at LSU should be competing for a title every few years and competing for an NY6 appearance in the years between.

LSU can do that with recruiting classes such as the one it just signed, but if LSU wants to be on the same level as Alabama and Georgia, it needs to take that one last step.

LSU lands former 5-star defensive back transfer

The Tigers landed one of the transfer portal’s most coveted prospects on Thursday.

The bad news, LSU missed out on [autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag]. The good news, the Tigers picked up 2022 five-star cornerback [autotag]Denver Harris[/autotag] from Texas A&M.

The freshman played in five games for the Aggies this season making 10 tackles and three pass breakups. Coming out of high school, Harris was the No. 23 player overall and the No. 3 cornerback in the 2022 class. Now, Harris gets a chance to come to DBU and train with some of the best of all time.

What a huge win this is for Brian Kelly and his coaching staff in this recruiting class. Kelly said he will release the list of transfers tomorrow. The 2023 class ranks as the No. 7 class overall and the only recruit LSU is still in on is a five-star athlete [autotag]Nyckoles Harbor[/autotag].

Harbor has received a crystal ball to South Carolina, but Michigan is a 37% favorite to land her per On3. Harbor is not going to announce until February.

BREAKING: LSU loses the Desmond Ricks sweepstakes to Alabama

The Tigers were the favorites for Ricks heading into national signing day, but things shifted toward the Tide on Thursday.

What a difference 24 hours can make.

On Wednesday, LSU was the favorite to land five-star cornerback [autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag]. The Tigers had multiple crystal ball predictions, and they were over a 90% favorite to land him per On3.

On Thursday, Ricks signed to play for Nick Saban and Alabama. The rich get richer. Alabama already had the No. 1 class in the country before the Ricks’ commitment. Now, the Tide will be in contention with Texas A&M for the best class of all time.

Ricks is a big loss for the LSU recruiting class, but the sun will rise again tomorrow. The only thing [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] can do now is beat the Tide on the field. He’s already done it once, but next year he will have to do it in Tuscaloosa.

I’m sure the LSU staff will look to the transfer portal for a few more players. We will find out about the rest of the transfers tomorrow, according to Brian Kelly.

2023 4-Star CB Desmond Ricks officially signs with Alabama

2023 four-star cornerback Desmond Ricks signed his National Letter of Intent to Alabama on Thursday. He re-classified from the 2024 class to the 2023 class.

After being predicted by many to sign with LSU in recent weeks, 2023 four-star cornerback Desmond Ricks signed his National Letter of Intent to Alabama on Thursday.

Ricks is ranked as the No. 23 overall recruit in the country, according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings. He is listed as 6-foot-1, 170 pounds.

Ricks re-classified from the 2024 class to the 2023 class and will be available to participate as a true freshman next season. With his commitment, Alabama has now signed two cornerbacks in the class. The other is four-star Jahlil Hurley.

The length and versatility Ricks possesses on the back end could help the Tide next season. He figures to play a pivotal role in the coming years.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover the early signing period and which prospects will be joining the Crimson Tide.

Where does LSU’s recruiting class rank after national signing day?

LSU is still pushing for a top-five class after Day 1 of the early signing period.

The first day of the early signing period has come and gone in a whirlwind. LSU entered the day with 25 commitments and came away with 25 signees. One of those guys, [autotag]Daylen Austin[/autotag], flipped from LSU to Oregon.

So, LSU filled that spot by flipping four-star tight end [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag] from Vanderbilt to LSU. As of now, this class ranks as the No. 6 class in the country.

That is a great accomplishment for Brian Kelly and his staff, but there is a chance this class can enter the top five tomorrow if five-star cornerback [autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag] decides to take his talents to the Bayou. He is currently Crystal Balled to LSU, but nothing is certain until he signs his name on the dotted line.

That No. 6 ranking for the 2023 class is one spot better than Kelly’s 2022 recruiting class which finished.

Decommitment: LSU loses 4-star cornerback to Oregon

The Tigers suffered their first major loss on Wednesday as Daylen Austin flipped to Oregon.

For all of the positives [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the LSU staff have had on early signing day, this one is on the opposite end of the spectrum.

[autotag]Daylen Austin[/autotag] committed to LSU on May 16, but on Wednesday, he flipped his commitment and signed with the Oregon Ducks. The four-star cornerback is from Long Beach, California, where he played for Long Beach Poly, so the flip to Oregon takes him a lot closer to home.

With Austin now off the board, LSU looks towards Thursday when [autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag] plans to sign. If Ricks signs with LSU, it will take a lot of the sting away from losing such a great player.

LSU currently has five defensive backs signed for the 2023 class (two cornerbacks and three safeties). [autotag]Jeremiah Hughes[/autotag] is another LSU cornerback commit that has not signed yet. We will see how that plays out.

LSU picks up a prediction for 5-star cornerback Desmond Ricks

The Tigers seem to be in a good spot with one of the top prospects in the country.

The three-day early signing period starts Wednesday, and it looks like LSU will have an exceptional class for 2023.

One of the top recruits in the country will announce his commitment on Thursday. Five-star cornerback [autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag] is down to his final three schools: LSU, Alabama and Florida.

On Tuesday, LSU insider Billy Embody released a new prediction that Ricks would commit to playing for [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] on the Bayou. LSU currently has the No. 5 class in the country according to 247Sports, but Ricks’ commitment could catapult the Tigers into the top three.

Ricks was considered the No. 1 recruit for the class of 2024 until he re-classified for 2023. Kelly made signing Ricks a priority, and because of that, LSU has been the favorite to land him for a long time.

We’ll see if the Tigers can close things out with Ricks.
