Jamin Davis, Benjamin St-Juste are named in wrongful death lawsuit

Davis and St-Juste, along with former Washington safety Deshazor Everett were named in a wrongful death lawsuit from a 2021 fatal car crash.

Washington Commanders linebacker Jamin Davis and cornerback Benjamin St-Juste were named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed on Dec. 22 in the Loudoun County (Va.) Circuit Court.

Kathleen Peters filed a $25 million wrongful death lawsuit against Davis, St-Juste, former Washington safety Deshazor Everett and another friend, Shadidul Islam, alleging the football players were racing their cars in an accident that killed Peters’ daughter, Olivia, on Dec. 23, 2021. Olivia Peters was the fiance of Everett, who played for Washington from 2015-21.

Everett was charged with involuntary manslaughter in Feb. 2022 and released by Washington afterward. Everett pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving and was sentenced to three months of house arrest. Davis and St-Juste weren’t charged in the accident.

Here are more details from the suit, per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.

The lawsuit alleges that Everett, St-Juste and Davis, who were all on Washington’s roster at the time, planned that evening “to ‘show off’ and race their cars on the public roads.” According to the lawsuit, Everett’s car was equipped with nitrous oxide, which can boost a car’s horsepower and is illegal in Virginia, along with racing tires and a roll cage. Davis drove a McLaren, and St-Juste drove a customized Audi A6.

The suit claims the three met at an auto shop in Loudoun County owned by fellow defendant Shahidul Islam, then went driving. Everett had a GoPro Camera attached to his car, recording the events. According to the suit, the defendants “drove at high rates of speed well in excess of the posted speed limits,” “changed lanes erratically and without signaling,” “crossed over double yellow lines and drove in the opposite lane of traffic” and “raced each other on multiple occasions.”

Olivia Peters, 29, was from Rockville, Md., and worked as an occupational therapist.

Davis was charged with reckless driving just days before the crash in a separate incident. Three months later, Davis was again charged with reckless driving after allegedly going 114 mph in a 45 mph zone. He was initially convicted and sentenced to 30 days in jail but appealed and is awaiting another hearing which is scheduled for March.

Davis and St-Juste are both in their third NFL season and were a part of Washington’s 2021 NFL draft class.

Former Washington safety Deshazor Everett sentenced to house arrest

Deshazor Everett was sentenced to three months of house arrest for misdemeanor reckless driving in an accident that killed his longtime girlfriend.

Former Washington safety Deshazor Everett was sentenced to three months of house arrest Thursday for reckless driving in the December accident that killed his longtime girlfriend, Olivia Peters.

Everett was initially charged with felony involuntary manslaughter but reached a plea agreement for misdemeanor reckless driving with Loudoun County prosecutors.

According to Neal Augenstein of WTOP News in Washington, D.C, the mothers of Everett and Peters hugged in an emotional courtroom after the judge agreed to a joint request from the defense and the prosecutor that Everett be sentenced to 12 months in jail, with nine months suspended.

Everett’s defense attorney suggest Everett serve his three months on house arrest so he could continue his rehab and perhaps return to the NFL. Everett, 30, spent seven seasons with Washington as a star on special teams and also played safety. Everett was once a captain for Washington.

The judge ordered Everett to do a public service announcement about how dangerous reckless driving is and circulate it around the NFL.

The Commonwealth Attorney agreed with the judge’s sentence, with the backing of Peters’ family.

”Making a PSA would have great potential to reach so large an audience,” Commonwealth Attorney Christina Brady said.

District Court Judge Deborah Welsh added the following

”What a wonderful team you were,” said Welsh of Everett and Peters. “The court is going to give you the opportunity to help others. People look up to you. Make this video. Have an impact. I wish you much luck with this.”

Everett was released by Washington in March and must also pay a $2,500 fine and complete 100 hours of community service.

Instant analysis: Washington selects Percy Butler in 4th round

Percy Butler can help Washington on defense and special teams immediately.

The Washington Commanders selected Percy Butler (Safety) out of Louisiana at No. 113 on day 3 of the 2022 NFL draft in Las Vegas.

Butler is a tremendous athlete running a 4.36 40, who will instantly replace Deshazor Everett, being much better in pass coverage, and help on special teams his rookie year backing up Bobby McCain.

Pro Football Talk analyst Chris Simms praised Butler before the draft, and literally as soon as Washington selected him.

Troy Apke has been the gunner, playing mostly special teams. It could also be the case that the defensive coaches may be looking to replace Apke as well. Apke was converted to cornerback last season.

Butler was second-team All-Sun Belt Conference his senior season of 2021, accumulating 61 tackles, six for loss, four pass breakups, one blocked kick in 12 games.

Well, the young man certainly possesses a great deal of confidence.

Washington Commanders’ Deshazor Everett charged with involuntary manslaughter from December accident

Washington safety Deshazor Everett was charged with involuntary manslaughter Tuesday.

Washington Commanders’ safety Deshazor Everett was charged with involuntary manslaughter Tuesday stemming from a vehicle accident in December that resulted in the death of his girlfriend, 29-year-old Olivia Peters.

Everett, 29, was driving a 2010 Nissan GT-R on Dec. 23, when at around 9:15 p.m. ET, his vehicle exited the right side of the road before hitting multiple trees and rolling over, the statement read. Everett was allegedly driving over twice the posted speed limit of 45 MPH.

Everett’s attorney, Kaveh Noorishad, released the following statement via NBC Sports Washington:

“Mr. Everett voluntarily appeared earlier today at the Loudoun County Magistrate’s Office where he was served with a warrant for involuntary manslaughter,” Noorishad said. “Shortly thereafter, he was released on bond. Our team continues to investigate this matter as we intend on vigorously defending Mr. Everett against these allegations. We continue to ask that judgment be reserved until all facts are fully investigated and litigated in the proper forum. At this time, we cannot comment any further due to the pending litigation.”

Everett signed with Washington in 2015, serving as its second-longest tenured player behind punter Tress Way.

Washington coach Ron Rivera expressed frustration in his press conference after a blowout loss to the Cowboys.

It’s been a tough few weeks for the Washington Football Team. Just before Washington’s Week 14 loss to the Cowboys, a COVID-19 outbreak would hit the locker room, and the team is still battling the virus.

Two weeks later, linebacker Cole Holcomb and All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff would miss Washington’s 56-14 loss to the Cowboys in the rematch on Sunday Night Football in Week 16.

After Washington’s embarrassing prime-time performance, head coach Ron Rivera spoke to the media, expressing his disappointment in his team’s performance.

“We got beat,” Rivera said. “They played better than we did, and we didn’t take advantage of our opportunities when we had them.”

The coach spoke of his message to the team after the game:

Well, more so than anything else, we’ve got to games left to play, and we’re going to play them to win. That’s just the way it is. I told them, I said, ‘If you play this game long enough, you’re going to get beat like this. It happens. How you respond to it, how you bounce back, how you play, that tells more about who you are than anything else.’

Rivera didn’t make excuses for Washington’s blowout loss but did express frustration with some of the media’s questions after the game. That was probably more due to his emotions after such a painful loss than anything else.

Rivera was also asked if he blamed COVID for Washington any of its top linebackers available for the game. Rivera gave a more insightful look at what Washington has been battling over the last few weeks.

You don’t. It’s all tied together. I mean, if you look at the things that have happened in the last couple of weeks, we’ve dealt with a lot but that’s football. That’s life. You’re going to deal with a lot in life. How you handle it, though, that’s the important thing and we didn’t handle it very well tonight. That’s disappointing. We’ve got to be better than that. We expect to be able to win football games. We’ve got to be better than that as a group.

The media session turned a bit tense when Rivera felt like he answered the same question twice.

I just told you. We just went through a few weeks…a couple of things…bad things happen, ok? You have to deal with those things and it’s tough. It’s not easy to try and separate and compartmentalize situations like that. It spills over. It gets to people. It’s human nature. These guys are more than just robots. These are players. These are people. They’ve got a teammate going through something right now. It’s tough. You have an opportunity, and you don’t have everybody playing. That’s hard on people. I mean that’s not normal shit. That’s real-life shit and that’s what they’re dealing with.

Rivera is referring to the situation of safety Deshazor Everett, who was involved in a fatal car accident last week. Everett is a captain and one of the most popular players on the team.

It’s been a tough season for Washington, which is now winding down. Washington has two more division games to end the season and looks to finish strong after an embarrassing defeat.

Deshazor Everett is back and Washington has depth at safety

Deshazor Everett is back and gives Washington another dependable veteran in the secondary. Safety is now a position with good depth overall.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

There has been a lot of talk about the competition at wide receiver this summer in Washington’s training camp. The Football Team will be forced to make some tough decisions at receiver before the 2021 season begins next month.

Another position to watch is safety. Landon Collins is back. Kamren Curl was a rookie sensation one year ago. Bobby McCain was signed to play either free safety or cornerback. He’s also had an impressive camp. Then there is rookie Darrick Forrest and Jeremy Reaves.

Reaves impressed coaches last season and is a player to watch.

Now, Washington has veteran Deshazor Everett back on the roster. Everett began training camp on the non-football illness list but passed his physical on Tuesday and was activated to the main roster.

Everett is another player the coaching staff loves. Not only can Everett play safety in a pinch, but he is also a leader and captain on special teams. He sets the tone and is one of the longest-tenured players on Washington’s roster.

While he is also better at strong safety, the coaches played him at free safety last season before he was lost for the season in December. Everett handled the position well.

I recently heard someone say Everett was on the roster bubble. Perhaps, but I don’t see it. He is dependable. He plays hard, and he’s a smart player.

Head coach Ron Rivera spoke of Everett on Tuesday.

That one quote tells you all you need to know about how Rivera and his staff feel about Everett.

How many safeties will Washington keep? Something to consider is McCain can also play corner, meaning the WFT could keep an extra safety.

Troy Apke is on the bubble. He has played corner throughout the spring and summer and appears to be adjusting well to the new position. Will it be enough to keep him on the roster? Well, it depends on how coaches view Apke’s work on special teams.

Collins is back and looks as good as ever. Coaches are going to try and keep him and Curl on the field as much as possible this fall.

While Washington now has plenty of depth at safety, there is still not a clear-cut starter at free safety.

As for Everett, don’t expect him to go anywhere.

Injuries to star players in Washington might put the winning streak in jeopardy vs. Seattle

With Alex Smith, Antonio Gibson, Morgan Moses, and Kevin Pierre-Louis all up in the air for Sunday, Washington’s chance at continuing their winning streak just got harder.

In order for the Washington Football Team to pull off another upset and beat the Seattle Seahawks this weekend, they will need to be close to full strength, if not at 100 percent to do so.

At the time being, it looks like they aren’t even close.

We’ve known that both QB Alex Smith and RB Antonio Gibson have been battling through injuries this week and will have their questionability unknown going into the weekend, but a few more players can be added to that list now as well, with RT Morgan Moses and LB Kevin Pierre-Louis not practicing on Friday either.

All of this, plus the fact that starting safety Deshazor Everett was placed on the injured reserve on Thursday after undergoing chest surgery to repair an injured pectoral, and Washington’s 4-game winning streak could be at real jeopardy this weekend against the Seahawks. We will wait to see what the injury report says and see if any of these supposed ‘game-time decisions’ can suit up on Sunday, but things aren’t looking great in Ashburn.

Injury Report: Deshazor Everett to IR after chest surgery; Alex Smith and Antonio Gibson out

Deshazor Everett was absent from practice on Thursday, and both Alex Smith and Antonio Gibson stayed off to the side for individual work.

There was a list of players who were unable to participate in practice for Washington on Thursday, headlined by both QB Alex Smith and RB Antonio Gibson. Both players were in attendance, but neither worked with the team, rather staying off to the side and going through individual drills with trainers to try and progress with their respective injuries.

Another player who was not able to go through team work was safety Deshazor Everett, who was reported to have chest surgery on Thursday morning to fix an injury suffered last week against the San Francisco 49ers. The Athletic‘s Ben Standig reports that Everett will likely go on the injured reserve list after the surgery, and it is unknown whether or not he will return this season.
