5 recruits Brent Venables’ can secure as he becomes Oklahoma’s next head coach

As he starts to settle in, who are the 5 recruits that Brent Venables and the current staff should focus on?

After an agonizing week filled with rumors, misinformation, smokescreens, de-commitments, and borderline scandals, the Oklahoma Sooners have found their man. The name is familiar in Oklahoma as Brent Venables takes the reigns as head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. From 1999 to 2011, Venables coached at Oklahoma, where he served as associate head coach, defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach for the Sooners under legendary head coach Bob Stoops.

Stoops is currently serving as interim while things are sorted out for Venables and the rest of the potential new staff.

For Venables, the bit of mess he walked in isn’t catastrophic, but it’s worthy of note. They are less than two weeks away from the Early Signing Day, and their 2022 class is currently 17th on 247Sports team rankings after being 7th just a week ago.

They’ve lost four 2022 recruits since news of Riley’s departure to USC, and Venables will have his work cut out for him to regain those commitments, add others, or bring guys from Clemson’s recruiting class.

Who are the five players that Brent Venables and the current staff should look to close the deal on?

As Riley moves on, the decommits from Oklahoma’s 2022 class begin to pile up

With Lincoln Riley heading to USC, the 2022 OU’s recruiting class has taken a hit with the early signing period right around the corner.

By now, it’s probably painfully obvious what has happened. The Sooners no longer have Lincoln Riley as their head coach as he decided Sunday to bolt for the head coaching position at the University of Southern California. It was a move that has shaken the core of the Sooners program and its community of fans with massive implications for the landscape of college football.

On the surface, the Sooners need a head coach sooner rather than later. Early signing period opens on December 15th. When news of Riley’s departure hit the internet, it was only a matter of time before Oklahoma commits would begin to jump ship and reassess their options. While the 2023 class was ranked number one in the country for its class, we’ll focus on the more pressing and immediate future of the 2022 class, who with two weeks away from making the biggest decisions of their lives are left without the head coach they committed to play for.

Derrick Moore, DE

Maryland native Derrick Moore announced his de-commitment Monday morning.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Moore committed to the Sooners on July 4 after visiting for the signature ChampU BBQ. He came on his official visit to Oklahoma in late September for the game against West Virginia.

Moore was recruited heavily by Jamar Cain, who remains on staff as of right now. At the time, the Sooners beat out Penn State, Ohio State, and Alabama for his services. Moore was a consensus four-star recruit across all major recruiting services and was in line for some early opportunities considering what Oklahoma will lose likely on their defensive line. It’s a massive loss as it stands right now.

Demetrius Hunter, IOL

Demetrius Hunter marks another tough blow for the Sooners 2022 recruiting efforts. Hunter had been committed since March of this year but has now backed out of his commitment. With Bill Bedenbaugh likely headed to USC with Riley, the lack of a head coach makes Oklahoma a difficult sell for Hunter.

While Hunter wasn’t ranked highly, just 353rd nationally on 247Sports’ composite rankings, Bedenbaugh saw something in him to take a chance, and with his track record of developing less-heralded guys, the Sooners may miss out on a gem. The product of West Orange-Stark High School now opens up his recruitment with signing day just around the corner.

Kobie McKinzie, LB

The first commit of the Sooners 2022 class has announced he will also be de-commiting from Oklahoma. Kobie McKinzie sent shockwaves through the recruiting world when he committed to Oklahoma as a sophomore after being recruited by Brian Odom. Odom is currently still employed by Oklahoma but his first major recruit while on staff is no more.

McKinzie hails from Lubbock, Texas which is notable considering that’s where Texas Tech is. Texas Tech has had their eye on him since he started high school football and with the new hire of Joey McGuire will likely set their sights on him again.

McKinzie is a consensus four-star linebacker recruit that the Sooners were ecstatic about having. In a lot of ways, he was a clone of former Sooner turned first-rounder Kenneth Murray.

It’s an unfortunate turn of events for a team that started the 2021 season as national title contenders. As the 2022 recruiting class begins taking hits, stay tuned here at the Sooners Wire for further updates as the situation unfolds.

Official and Unofficial visitors coming to Norman for Oklahoma’s Big 12 Opener vs. WVU

Oklahoma is set to host several players for official and unofficial visits for this weekends prime-time matchup with West Virginia

Opening their conference slate on what should be a nice evening could not work out any better for the Oklahoma Sooners. They will have a lot of the nation watching, another sellout atmosphere, and some very high-profile recruits in town that they should be ecstatic to host. Let’s take a look at some of the players slated to take official and unofficial visits to Norman this weekend.

Official visits:

Unofficial visits:

As it stands at the time of this post, this group of visitors is loaded. There’s a nice blend of commits and uncommitted guys. Those who have already committed can work on the uncommitted athletes and convince them to come to Oklahoma. It’s a perfect situation for Oklahoma.

NOTES:

In-state star Chris McLellan out of Owasso, Oklahoma, is a priority for Oklahoma. They’ll be trying to restock their defensive line cupboard with the likely departure of multiple guys to the NFL or graduation this winter. Currently, Oklahoma is competing with Florida, Ohio State, and Alabama the most for his services.

Marvin Jones Jr will be on his official visit. He plays at American Heritage which is the same school as Sooners 2023 commit Brandon Inniss. The Sooners have an excellent little connection with this school currently will look to stand out with a great official and hope Brandon can keep the pressure on him at school.

The biggest fish that will be in town is that of Lebbeus Overton. Overton is the number two player in the country in 247Sports composite rankings and the number one recruit by 247Sports. He’s a Sooner legacy as his father (Milton Overton) played offensive line at Oklahoma from 1991-1994. Oklahoma was rumored to be out of the race for Overton. However, a trip to the Champ U BBQ and an unofficial visit this weekend indicates communication between the two sides has picked back up. Oklahoma could really make some noise here. Ultimately, they need to have him back for an official.

With only one offensive lineman committed for the 2023 class, Oklahoma will likely start building on both sides of the line for that class. Guys like Harris Sewell have an offer from the Sooners and are very much on Oklahoma’s radar.

Stay tuned throughout the week as we update the list with more information on who is and is not visiting this Saturday against West Virginia.

How did a 2022 Oklahoma Sooners DL commit perform in week 1?

Oklahoma Sooners 2022 defensive line commit battles in big-time week one matchup in the 2021 high school season.

The Oklahoma Sooners got a boost on the defensive side of the football for the 2022 recruiting class with the commitment of defensive lineman Derrick Moore. Derrick Moore, who primarily plays off the edge, already has an NFL body at 6-4, 260 pounds. In week one of the high school season, Moore had a tough matchup against one of the top offensive tackles in the 2022 recruiting cycle.

Moore out of St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland, stood out this weekend according to Andrew Ivins of 247Sports. Ivins had this to say about Moore’s performance this weekend.

By far one of the better head-to-head battles Saturday was between Top247 defensive lineman Derrick Moore and Top247 offensive lineman Julian Armella. The two went back and forth all game, but Moore seemed to get the best of Armella more times than not. Moore, who was seen on the sidelines chugging pickle juice during TV timeouts in hopes of combating the 95 degree heat, lined up at different spots along St. Frances Academy’s front and was able to create some push both inside and outside. The future Oklahoma Sooner wasn’t credited with a sack in loss, but did face plenty of double trams. – Ivins

Julian Armella is the number 12 offensive tackle in the 2022 recruiting cycle per the 247Sports composite rankings. By Ivins’ account, the two had a nice back and forth battle with the edge going to Moore.

ESPN releases updated recruiting rankings, Oklahoma tops in the conference

Where the Oklahoma Sooners 2022 recruiting class ranks among the best per ESPN.

No question the Oklahoma Sooners have been red hot on the recruiting trail as of late. They fell to No. 22 in 247Sports composite team rankings after a pair of wide receivers decommitted from the class.

Since that time they have added a slew of top prospects to jump back into the top five of 247Sports’ updated rankings. Recently, ESPN released updated rankings (subscription required) for their recruiting coverage. OU is viewed as one of the top teams for them as well.

No. 6: Oklahoma Sooners

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

What ESPN Says…

Lincoln Riley may need to figure out a way to incorporate a second football into his offensive attack with the depth of playmakers he is amassing. The Sooners signed one of the best wide receiver classes in the 2021 cycle, and several more top offensive weapons are on board for 2022. The class includes ESPN 300 five-star WR Burden, a fast and smooth target out of Illinois who had an MVP performance at the Under Armour Future 50 event. Adding to the offensive firepower is a pair of top-five running backs in Gavin Sawchuk and Raleek Brown, a sudden and speedy scatback-type who can be dangerous in space. They also added some strong defensive pieces in lengthy and powerful top-five DE Moore and top-three ILB Kobie McKinzie.

According to ESPN’s rankings, Luther Burden is their top offensive commit with Derrick Moore coming in as the top defensive commit. The team just added another commit to the class on Saturday with four-star tight end Kaden Helms. Helms gives them their second tight end commit in the 2022 cycle. Given how Riley likes to incorporate multiple tight end and h-back sets, they will likely see plenty of time.

Oklahoma comes in just one spot ahead of their biggest rivals, the Texas Longhorns on the list. Baylor (No. 15) and Oklahoma State (No. 20) round out the Big 12 Conference’s team in the top 25 for ESPN. There are still more top targets available for the Sooners class as they continue to stockpile talent and maintain their stranglehold on the conference.

Up next on Sunday evening, OU is expected to land the No. 2 quarterback in Malachi Nelson. He would make the second 2023 commit after four-star athlete Treyaun Webb pledged on Saturday.

Derrick Moore commitment a sign of Oklahoma’s defensive resurgence

With the commitment of Derrick Moore from deep in the heart of Big 10 country, the Sooners are changing the narrative about their defense.

It wasn’t that long ago that the Oklahoma Sooners were struggling to get stops. The Mike Stoops days were fraught with high-scoring affairs that asked Baker Mayfield and the Sooners offense to score 40 points every week for them to have a chance.

For the program that once won a national championship with a 13-2 win over Florida State in the Orange Boal, this was a far cry from the early Bob Stoops era.

However, things have changed as Alex Grinch, and the defensive coaching staff have begun to end the narrative that the Sooners don’t play defense.

Back in 2015, the Sooners defense could only hold their opponents under 24 points three times in 13 games. In 2016, that number improved to four games under 24 points in 13 games. And, in 2017, the Sooners were able to hold opponents under 24 points five times in 14 games, but then that number fell back to four games with under 24 points in 2018.

In 2019, Alex Grinch’s first year as the defensive coordinator, the Sooners held half of their 14 opponents under 24 points in a game. In 2020, they held seven of their 11 opponents under 24 points.

Oklahoma has consistently had one of the best offense’s in college football for years. Typically they’ve been able to score 30 or more points on teams, and they won a lot of shootouts. However, that wasn’t a recipe for success because their defense couldn’t always get stops. In 2019, that started to change, and it continued to improve in 2020.

2020 wasn’t a perfect year, and it’s proof that Grinch and the coaching staff have work to do. In their two losses, they allowed 38 points to Kansas State and 37 points to Iowa State in back-to-back weeks. Against Texas, they allowed 31 in regulation, but the Longhorns stormed back with 14 points in the final five minutes of the game to send it to overtime, where it took a Woodi Washington interception to end the game in the fourth overtime.

In the big games against their top competition, the Sooners have to do better. However, the commitment of four-star defensive lineman Derrick Moore shows that the Sooners are on their way to changing the national perception of the Oklahoma Sooners’ defense. Ohio State and Penn State heavily pursued Moore. For the Sooners to land the top-flight pass rusher from Maryland (deep in the heart of Big 10 country) has to signify the good things happening for the Sooners defense.

Alex Grinch and the Sooners are building something in Norman. Although they lost Ronnie Perkins, Tre Brown, and Tre Norwood to the NFL, the Sooners still have a ton of talent that could make this unit the best they’ve had in the last decade.

Oklahoma Sooners recruiting wave pushes them back into the top 10

The surging Oklahoma Sooners see their recruiting ranking climb back into the top 10 after productive recruiting weekend.

The Oklahoma Sooners got off to a hot start when it came to their 2022 recruiting class. They did have a period of cooling after Lincoln Riley watched two of his top receivers back out of their pledge and opt for different landing spots. It started with Jordan Hudson, who decided to stay in his home state of Texas and play for the SMU Mustangs. With a 247Sports composite rating of 0.9513, he became their highest-rated recruit ever.

The decommitment of Hudson was followed up by Talyn Shettron’s flip to the Sooners’ in-state rivals, the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Shettron will join his brother in playing for OSU. With those two decomittments, the Sooners saw their class ranking drop all the way to No. 22.

However, since that time Oklahoma and Riley have added three four-star talents and a pair of three-star athletes.

Recruit Position Stars Rating
Gavin Sawchuck RB 4 0.9800
Derrick Moore DL 4 0.9690
Jacob Sexton OT 4 0.9120
Xavion Brice ATH 3 0.8466
Robert Spears-Jennings ATH 3 0.8366

Prior to Derrick Moore’s commitment the Sooners found themselves at No. 9 to get back into the top 10, he boosted them to No. 8. OU is now just a point behind their biggest rivals, the Texas Longhorns for the top spot in the Big 12 Conference.

[listicle id=24291]

As it sits at this moment, the Ohio State Buckeyes have the best class in the nation by a very wide margin. Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Penn State Nittany Lions, Florida State Seminoles, and LSU Tigers round out the top five. It is a close race following LSU with Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, and Oregon all right there together in the No. 6-9 spots.

The Sooners still have work to do, currently, they hold crystal ball predictions for several more top prospects in the 2022 recruiting class.

Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy is the highest-rated of the bunch with a five-star grade and the No. 6 player in the country. He is expected to visit Norman in September when the Sooners host Nebraska for the third game of the season. Gentry Williams is another hot target but the USC Trojans are gaining some momentum on that front. The other name to watch is Jake Taylor of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas.

Sooner Trifecta: Oklahoma lands third commitment of the day with Derrick Moore of Maryland

Oklahoma Sooners land third commitment of the day with Derrick Moore of Baltimore, Maryland.

The Oklahoma Sooners are having quite the 4th of July on the recruiting front. Over a two-day period, Lincoln Riley landed three commits with Jacob Sexton, Robert Spears-Jennings, and Xavion Brice. They weren’t done as four-star defensive lineman out of Maryland, Derrick Moore also committed to play for the Sooners.

Moore was down to three schools choosing to go with Alex Grinch’s defense over the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Penn State Nittany Lions. All signs were pointing straight to Norman, Oklahoma, prior to his announcement to play college football for the Crimson and Cream. The strongside defensive end was the No. 1 overall player in the state according to 247Sports rankings.

I guess now we know why Lincoln Riley dropped the four eyeball emoji tweet ahead on Saturday.

After losing two recruits recently, the Sooners are now in double-digits with a total of 12 commits in their 2022 recruiting class. Not too shabby to pull two players in the trenches on a holiday weekend. Oklahoma is starting to gain momentum after dropping to No. 22 recently in 247Sports composite team rankings. OU is now inside the top 10 in the updated team rankings.

A Busy Day on D-Line Recruiting Trail for Notre Dame

It was a busy morning for Notre Dame’s coaching staff as the Irish made three scholarship offers to ’22 defensive linemen. Learn more here..

The week started with a bang for Notre Dame in terms of scholarship offers being made as three were offered by the Fighting Irish coaching staff to 2022 defensive linemen.

These aren’t offers being made to middle of the road prospects, these are some big-time names in the 2022 class that will see Notre Dame have to go toe-to-toe with the biggest of players if they’re going to eventually land a commitment from any of the three.

So who are the offers to?  A quick summary of each:

Wilfredo Aybar – Defensive End – Cheshire, CT

Aybar is a 6-3, 220 pound weakside defensive end from Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Connecticut. Ranked the top player in Connecticut by 247Sports, Aybar ranks as a top ten weakside defensive end in the 247Sports rankings.  Of the now 20 offers Aybar has received, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State and Tennessee stand out as the biggest competition.

Derrick Moore – Defensive End – Baltimore, MD

Moore has 17 offers to date but that number will only continue to swell.  A 6-4, 245 pound strong side defensive end from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Moore will be in demand by all of the biggest programs.  The 247Sports Composite rankings give Moore a four-star grade as he’s seen widely as a top-three defensive end in the 2022 class.

Mykel Williams – Defensive Tackle – Columbus, GA

A 6-5, 255 pound bohemeath from Georgia, Williams will be one of the best defensive tackles in the 2022 class.  Williams has 24 offers listed on his 247Sports profile page but according to his tweet annoucing the Notre Dame offer, he’s now reached 30.  The Irish will have to out-duel the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State and plenty more.

As of posting (7/20/2020) Notre Dame is yet to receive any commitments in the 2022 class but is certainly not being hesitant about putting lines in the water for some of the biggest prospects out there.

Michigan State Football offers four 2022 prospects scholarships

Michigan State and Mel Tucker offered a total of four 2022 prospects scholarships on Tuesday.

[jwplayer uiKRAikX]

Right now, all eyes are on the 2021 football recruiting class at Michigan State as head coach Mel Tucker looks to play catch-up and put together a strong class, but that does not mean his staff isn’t making progress for the future as well. On Tuesday, the Spartans offered up four 2022 players future scholarships to come to East Lansing.

They are:

  • DE Derrick Moore, St. Frances Academy, Baltimore, MD
  • TE/WR Elijah Brown, Wayne High School, Huber Heights, Ohio
  • T/TE George Fitzpatrick, Cherry Creek High School, Greenwood Village, CO
  • T Grant Bingham, Johnson Central High School, Paintsville, KY
