Barry Bonds hysterically told Derek Jeter he could hit a homer off Satchel Paige

Well, Barry Bonds never lacked for confidence.

Well, nobody can fault legendary MLB slugger Barry Bonds for his confidence.

Ahead of Thursday night’s San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals game at the historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, the Fox Sports panel had a lively discussion between Bonds and former MLB superstar Derek Jeter.

Jeter asked Bonds what he would do if he was hitting against all-time pitcher Satchel Paige, who played much of his career in the Negro Leagues before transitioning to the MLB in 1948.

Bonds’ answer was predictably enthusiastic. He thinks he could pretty easily homer off of Paige if he were at the plate, which got big laughs from his fellow Fox Sports MLB broadcasters.

While it’s impossible to know how a meeting between an all-time great pitcher and one of the best hitters of all time would go, it’s not hard at all to guess how Bonds thinks he’d do in that scenario.

Dan Lanning details meeting Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter at national championship game

Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning broke down his experience meeting Michael Jordan and Derek Jeter at the national championship game.

Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning turned a large number of heads earlier this week when he popped up in Houston, Texas, for the College Football Playoff national championship game.

While he wasn’t coaching in the game, Lanning accepted an invite from ESPN to join the broadcast crew and help preview the game. He knew well what type of challenges the Washington Huskies presented, and had an idea of what the Michigan Wolverines needed to do to stop them.

Lanning also explained in an interview with Oregon radio host John Canzano this week that it offered a great recruiting tool for the Ducks, allowing them to stay in the spotlight even when not playing on the biggest stage.

“That’s usually a night in college football where everyone is talking about the two teams on TV,” Lanning said on “The Bald Faced Truth.” “But we felt like it was an opportunity for there to be another team that they’re talking about.”

Getting to sit down with Kirk Herbstreit, Rece Davis, Chris Fowler and Pat McAfee was not the highlight of Lanning’s night, though. He told Canzano on Thursday that it was a trio of others he met during the game that really stole the show.

“I got to meet Michael Jordan. Like, I got to touch him,” Lanning said. “He touched me on the shoulder, I haven’t washed my shoulder yet. I’ve Facetimed with him a couple of times, but I got to (meet) him, Derek Jeter, Travis Scott. Come on man, that’s a moment where you pinch yourself, like ‘What’s this dude from Richmond, Missouri, doing hanging out in a suite with Michael Jordan, Travis Scott, and Derek Jeter?'”

Lanning said that, while had had met Travis Scott before when the rapper and fashion designer was in Eugene for the 2022 World Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field, he left this meeting with a picture of himself and No. 23 to put into his collection of memorabilia.

Canzano also did a great job of asking a very notable question: What do you learn from being in the presence of superstars like this, if anything at all?

“I think by just watching them; I don’t think you have to be standing next to them to do so,” Lanning said. “Like, if I were able to sit down and say ‘Hey, let’s take two hours,’ then I would be the guy with a notebook out writing down a million things. But that hasn’t been my experience yet. There’s no doubt that there is a ton to learn from those guys. The thing that sticks out to you about guys like Jeter and Jordan is just like, they’re ultimate competitors. It doesn’t matter what the game is, these guys play to win, they work so hard at their craft to be the greatest, and that’s the part that separates them.”

We’ve seen Lanning bring an icon like Phil Knight to football practices before, obviously, but might this mean we get to see some people like Jordan, Jeter, or Scott in Eugene to talk with the team? I wouldn’t put it past him.

Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter among a star-studded skybox at CFP national title game between Michigan and Washington

Well that’s quite a famous box of spectators!

Monday night’s College Football Playoff national championship game featured one of the most randomly starry boxes you’re likely to see anytime soon.

The ESPN game camera showed a spectator’s box at Houston’s NRG Stadium that featured Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, Stephen A. Smith and Travis Scott among its patrons.

That is an absurdly talented group of people all gathered to watch Michigan and Washington play each other for the college football national title.

Imagine walking into the wrong box at the title game and seeing this group of famous folks all mingling with each other. You might not want to leave!

You never know who is going to attend a big football game like this with who, and this was a very entertaining snapshot of who was in attendance for Monday night’s title game with each other.

Ciara’s reaction to finding out she’s distantly related to Derek Jeter was priceless

Imagine finding out you’re related to THAT Derek Jeter. You would react like this too.

Singer Ciara recently learned she’s related to sports royalty, and her reaction was totally on-brand.

Sports and pop culture crossovers aren’t new, but what about DNA? What happens when an R&B star connects with an MLB Hall of Famer? You get distant cousins. That happened when singer Ciara recently appeared on PBS’s Finding Your Roots.

The Atlanta native and wife to Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson sat down to review possible DNA matches to others who had been guests of the series. As she turned the pages of a book that would reveal her likely family members, a familiar face stopped her in her tracks.

It was New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter.

In another on-brand response, Russell Wilson claims he had a feeling about Ciara’s newly discovered family member.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes to feature in interview segment with MLB legend Derek Jeter

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes to feature in interview segment with #MLB legend Derek Jeter | from: @EdEastonJr

The career of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes can hardly be compared to many players in sports. The early success and unique charm of being the face of the league while performing at an exceptional level and securing championships can only be claimed by a few stars throughout history.

A player who understands similar early success is Baseball Hall of Famer Derek Jeter, who had more than a fair share of success throughout his legendary career. The New York Yankees great, who currently works for FOX Sports, recently did a special one-on-one interview with Mahomes at Arrowhead Stadium. The entire segment is set to air as part of FOX NFL Sunday’s pregame coverage ahead of the Chiefs hosting the winless Chicago Bears.

The two superstars have crossed paths in the past as Jeter wrote a feature in honor of Mahomes for Time’s annual list of the 100 most influential people of 2020. Jeter also faced off against Mahomes’ father during his career on multiple occasions.

David Ortiz pranked Derek Jeter with a custom Red Sox jersey to welcome him to FOX Sports

David Ortiz found the perfect way to prank his new FOX Sports co-worker Derek Jeter.

Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz found the perfect way to prank his brand-new FOX Sports co-worker Derek Jeter on the latter’s first day on the job.

Jeter started his broadcasting career with FOX Sports on Saturday at the MLB World Tour Series in London. The New York Yankees icon will now provide baseball analysis for the fans at home, adding to his immeasurable impact on the game.

Well, Ortiz and Jeter used to be the best of enemies in one of baseball’s most heated rivalries between the Red Sox and Yankees.

Ortiz couldn’t help but bring the rivalry to Saturday’s broadcast by “gifting” Jeter a personalized Boston jersey with his name on it.

As you could imagine, Jeter quickly tossed the Red Sox jersey off the broadcast desk as the rest of the crew, which included Kevin Burkhardt and Jeter’s former Yankees teammate Alex Rodriguez, laughed at Ortiz’s prank.

This is a very funny way of welcoming a former rival to your team, so kudos to Ortiz for refusing to let a day pass without reminding Jeter that some rivalries never go away.

Blake Corum signs major NIL deal

Pretty awesome! #GoBlue

Blake Corum has been making a name for himself running the football for Michigan.

In 2022, Corum rushed for 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns. Even though he missed a couple of games due to an injury, Corum was still in the Heisman race. Now that name, image and likeness payments are a real thing, Corum is making a name for himself in that department as well.

The senior back signed with Greatness Wins as the athletic brand’s first student-athlete ambassador.

Former New York Yankees shortstop and Hall of Famer Derek Jeter is the company’s co-founder, alongside Untuckit’s Chris Riccobono.

Corum, who wears No. 2 said he is a lifelong Derek Jeter fan. The Michigan running back is super excited to work with him. The former Yankees’ shortstop shared similar sentiments about working with Corum.

“After wearing the number 2 for my whole life because of Derek Jeter, it feels surreal to be working alongside him and the Greatness Wins team in this new chapter, as I head into my last season of college football,” Corum said.

“Blake’s talent, work ethic, resiliency and integrity make him an exceptional athlete and great teammate. At Greatness Wins, we talk about greatness being a mentality, and that’s a spirit that Corum shares. We’re really looking forward to working with him and watching what he’s able to continue to accomplish.”

The deal states Corum will wear their apparel off the field, and he will appear in their social media campaigns.

Derek Jeter reveals he wore a gold thong to break out of slump

The famous Yankees gold thong story is back!

Do you know the story of the famous New York Yankees gold thong that was worn to break out of slumps?

Derek Jeter certainly does … and as he revealed to Jimmy Fallon (and the world) on The Tonight Show, he wore it too!

Let’s go back to 2008. Jason Giambi revealed that when he was in a slump, he wore a gold thong under his uniform. The New York tabloids had a field day with it, and Jeter — back then — said he tried it.

I guess everyone forgot. Because on Wednesday, Jeter did a “true confessions” game on Fallon’s show and no one guessed that he wore the thong (with shorts underneath, he’s quick to note) during a slump before hitting a home run in his first at-bat:

There you have it.

Who is Howard Spira, the gambler mentioned in Derek Jeter doc ‘The Captain’ who got George Steinbrenner suspended

ESPN’s “The Captain” briefly touched on Steinbrenner’s dealings with Spira.

If you’re like me, someone who grew up with a special nostalgia for the Derek Jeter-era New York Yankees, then the ESPN documentary about his life and career The Captain was appointment viewing. And by appointment, I mean whenever I could get around to watching it.

That time finally came Sunday, and the first episode absolutely did not disappoint. The background on who the Yankees were pre-Jeter was enlightening. There was so much I didn’t know about the franchise I grew up rooting for.

One of those things was the lifetime ban Yankees owner George Steinbrenner received for his dealings with gambler Howard Spira – and how it was the likely catalyst for the dynasty they became. Digging into the situation a little more turned up how silly and avoidable the entire ordeal was, and I’m guessing I’m not the only one who wanted to learn more.

So here’s what happened.

¿No?

¿No?
