* * * *

Rob Font def. Ricky Simon at UFC on ESPN 7

[autotag]Rob Font[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 7-3 UFC) had to battle through early adversity to get his 17th professional win, topping a game [autotag]Ricky Simon[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC).

Font came back from getting dropped in the first round to outpoint Simon in a unanimous decision. The judges’ scores were 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27, giving Font back-to-back wins for the first time in more than two years.

Kamaru Usman def. Colby Covington at UFC 245

The highly anticipated welterweight title fight between [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] (16-1 MMA, 11-0 UFC) and [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] (15-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) surpassed all pre-fight expectations, but in the end it was the champion who came away with his title reign intact.

Usman and Covington went toe-to-toe for nearly five rounds, exchanging strikes on the feet and not once putting a wholehearted effort into a takedown attempt. Usman proved more dangerous on the feet in the matchup of wrestlers, breaking Covington’s jaw before dropping and stopping him in the fifth for the fight-ending TKO.

Charles Jourdain def. Dooho Choi at UFC on ESPN+ 23

After falling short in his UFC debut earlier this year, [autotag]Charles Jourdain[/autotag] (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) showed what he was all about in his sophomore octagon appearance when he won a featherweight thriller against [autotag]Dooho Choi[/autotag] (14-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC).

Jourdain gave “The Korean Superboy” a rude welcome back to action from a long layoff when he fearlessly found a home for his strikes for nearly two full rounds. Eventually Choi couldn’t hold up, because Jourdain connected with a shot that set up a TKO to end the “Fight of the Night” affair.

A.J. McKee def. Derek Campos at Bellator 236

[autotag]Derek Campos[/autotag] (20-10 MMA, 9-8 BMMA) showed off his trademark toughness, but it wasn’t enough to stop [autotag]A.J. McKee[/autotag] (16-0 MMA, 16-0 BMMA) from picking up another impressive win to extend his record winning streak in Bellator.

McKee fought Campos from every area over the course of the bout, then suddenly in the third, from his back, he pulled off a slick armbar that forced Campos to tap out and made him the first man to advance to the semifinals of the Bellator featherweight grand prix.

Tofiq Musaev def. Patricky Freire at Rizin FF 20

[autotag]Tofiq Musaev[/autotag] (18-3 MMA, 5-0 Rizin) made light of his underdog status as he surged into the Rizin lightweight grand prix final and claimed a unanimous decision victory over pre-tournament favorite [autotag]Patricky Freire[/autotag] (23-9 MMA, 2-1 Rizin).

The two semifinal matchups in the lightweight grand prix tournament produced brutal, quick-fire finishes as Azerbaijan’s Musaev and Brazilian Bellator star Freire registered impressive stoppage wins. They went all three rounds in the final, though, each trying to overcome severe hand injuries. Musaev had the bigger moments, though, and was given the nod by the judges.

The Winner: Usman vs. Covington

[vertical-gallery id=471456]

After a heated buildup and a compelling fight, Usman came out “and still” the UFC welterweight champion.

With the clock winding down in the UFC 245 main event, Usman finished former interim champ Covington at 4:10 of Round 5 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

As Covington walked out to Kurt Angle’s WWE theme song, he was met with boos and middle fingers from the crowd, although the controversial competitor also had a noticeable share of supporters. A calm, cool and collected Usman made the walk second, draped in the Nigerian flag.

When it came time to fight, the two combatants, who did not touch gloves at the outset, delivered. Known for their wrestling abilities, not one takedown attempt was tried. Covington set a frenetic pace in the first, while Usman was more calculated with his strikes.

After three rounds of back-and-forth face-punching, Covington informed his corner he thought he broke his jaw. Upon replay, a hard straight right was the culprit.

[lawrence-related id=474280,472439,472026]

Fighting through the pain in the fourth round, Covington showed tremendous heart. He stunned Usman on multiple occasions and dug deep to return to his first-round pacing.

With the fight being relatively close, there was no consensus leader entering the fifth. It could have been anyone’s fight. Midway through the round, Usman showed championship mettle and began to land some of his hardest punches of the fight.

In a wild fifth-round sequence, Usman battered Covington, dropping him to the canvas. Covington survived, but only for so long. He was promptly met with more hard shots from the champion. As a bloody, battered, and swollen Covington clutched onto a single leg, Usman’s hammer fists finished the fight.

Upon the stoppage from referee Marc Goddard, the bloodied and battered Covington protested, but to no avail.

After the fight, Covington left the cage and ran to the back. He did not give a post-fight interview.

Conversely, Usman took the high road. The champion celebrated his win, but also turned attention to a tragedy his family had recently endured. Usman’s brother Mohammed, a pro MMA heavyweight, lost his son in a drowning accident earlier this year.

The victory means Usman has now won 15 straight outings. As for Covington, the loss was only the second of his career.

Bellator 236 results: A.J. McKee taps Derek Campos with wild submission, advances to semifinals

A.J. McKee became the first to advance to the semifinals of the featherweight grand prix when he submitted Derek Campos.

[autotag]Derek Campos[/autotag] showed off his trademark toughness, but it wasn’t enough to stop [autotag]A.J. McKee[/autotag] from picking up another impressive win on Saturday at Bellator 236.

McKee (16-0 MMA, 16-0 BMMA) became the first to advance to the semifinals of the Bellator featherweight grand prix when he pulled off a slick armbar that forced Campos (20-10 MMA, 9-8 BMMA) to tap out at 1:08 of the third round.

The bout was the Bellator 236 co-main event at Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. The main card streamed on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.

McKee followed through with what he told MMA Junkie prior to fight week, opening with a Jorge Masvidal-style flying knee. He missed, then attacked with a wild spinning kick attempt. That was seemingly Campos’ moment to capitalize as he jumped into top position, but McKee quickly got up and took control, putting Campos on his back and threatening with submission attempts and ground-and-pound for the rest of the round.

[lawrence-related id=473583,473580,473577]

In the early seconds of Round 2, McKee clipped Campos with a heavy right hand that resulted in a knockdown. McKee dove into the guard trying to finish the fight, but Campos survived the assault and got back to his feet. Campos tagged McKee during a wild exchange then pressed forward and got into top position. Campos got his first advantageous position of the fight, controlling McKee from on top for several minutes. His top work wasn’t particularly effective, though, because McKee was able to lock him down and avoid taking damage for the duration of the round.

McKee came out aggressive in the third round, attacking with heavy kicks and body punches before changing levels into a takedown. He controlled from top before a scramble that appeared to lead to Campos on top, but McKee transitioned into a super sneaky armbar that elicited the tap from Campos.

“He’s a tough opponent,” McKee said in his post-fight interview with John McCarthy. “This is just the beginning. Welcome to A.J. jiu-jitsu 101. It’s just the beginning of what’s to come. Took a little damage and still here ready to go and ready for the next round and ready for my belt.”

With the win, McKee picked up his 16th consecutive Bellator win, extending his record for longest winning streak in company history.

4 burning questions heading into Bellator 236

MMA Junkie’s Simon Head takes a look at the key narratives ahead of Bellator 236 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The second half of Bellator’s Hawaii doubleheader sees Bellator 236 take place at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu as Hawaii’s own [autotag]Ilima-Lei Macfarlane[/autotag] bids to complete her fourth successful defense of the Bellator women’s flyweight title.

The card also features the first quarterfinal bout in the Bellator featherweight grand prix, as [autotag]A.J. McKee[/autotag] takes on [autotag]Derek Campos[/autotag], while a host of rising prospects look to make their mark with performances to match their spectacular setting.

Here are our four burning questions ahead of Saturday night’s fights.

****

Will Ilima-Lei Macfarlane keep her gold?

Ilima-Lei Macfarlane has been the poster girl for Bellator ever since she captured the women’s flyweight title at Bellator 186 back in November 2017, and since then she has cemented her status as the organization’s top 125-pounder with a hat-trick of third-round finishes.

Now she takes on seasoned veteran and British female MMA pioneer [autotag]Kate Jackson[/autotag], who is bidding to make history in her homeland by becoming the first British female to capture a major MMA title.

[lawrence-related id=472150]

Jackson booked her place in Saturday’s main event with a first-round finish of Lena Ovchynnikova, and will look to spring a shock against Macfarlane, who has finished every challenger to cross her path as Bellator champion.

Will Jackson be the first challenger to push Macfarlane to the limit, or will the defending champion produce another impressive display and claim a fourth straight finish to send her fellow Hawaiians home happy?

Bellator is back in Hawaii for a doubleheader weekend for the second straight December.

Bellator 236 takes place Saturday at Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. The main card streams on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie. Friday, the same venue hosts Bellator 235 (“Bellator and USO Present: Salute the Troops 2019”), an event exclusively for military members stationed in Honolulu.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

[lawrence-related id=469415,469432]

In the main event, women’s flyweight champion [autotag]Ilima-Lei Macfarlane[/autotag] (10-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA), a native of Hawaii who grew up in Honolulu, puts her title on the line against British challenger [autotag]Kate Jackson[/autotag] (11-3-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA). Macfarlane is a heavy favorite at the sports books with odds for her as high as 7-1. Not surprisingly, our 13 MMA Junkie editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers are taking the champ unanimously.

The co-main event is another unanimous pick from our staff members – one of five 13-0 blowouts on the main card. [autotag]A.J. McKee[/autotag] (15-0 MMA, 15-0 BMMA) is as much as an 8-1 favorite in his fight against [autotag]Derek Campos[/autotag] (20-9 MMA, 9-7 BMMA), which is a quarterfinal matchup in Bellator’s ongoing featherweight tournament.

[autotag]Juliana Velasquez[/autotag] (9-0 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) will try to stay unbeaten when she takes on [autotag]Bruna Ellen[/autotag] (5-2 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) in a women’s flyweight bout. Velasquez is more than a 4-1 favorite and one of our five unanimous picks.

[autotag]Raufeon Stots[/autotag] (12-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) recently got a long-awaited call from a big-time promotion when Bellator brought him on board. Stots, who trains at Roufusport in Milwaukee, is a 7-1 favorite against local fighter [autotag]Cheyden Leialoha[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), and he’s a 13-0 pick from our staff members.

The other unanimous pick goes to [autotag]Nainoa Dung[/autotag] (3-0 MMA, 2-0 BMMA), who opens the main card against [autotag]Zach Zane[/autotag] (13-9 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) in a lightweight fight. Dung, from Hawaii, made his Bellator debut a year ago in Honolulu and will try to repeat his success Saturday.

Our only contentious fight on the main card is between [autotag]Jason Jackson[/autotag] (10-4 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) and [autotag]Kiichi Kunimoto[/autotag] (20-8-2 MMA, 0-1 BMMA). Jackson stepped up on short notice when Neiman Gracie fell off the card earlier this week with an injury. He’s more than a 2-1 favorite, and even though it’s not unanimous, Jackson still has a massive 11-2 lead in the picks.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Macfarlane (95%), McKee (88 percent), Jackson (60 percent), Velasquez (81 percent), Stots (70 percent) and Dung (57 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Derek Campos plans to expose A.J. McKee’s flaws, derail ‘hype train’ at Bellator 236

Derek Campos doesn’t think A.J. McKee is all he’s cracked up to be, and he plans on proving as much at Bellator 236.

[autotag]Derek Campos[/autotag] doesn’t think [autotag]A.J. McKee[/autotag] is all he’s cracked up to be, and he plans on proving as much at Bellator 236.

McKee (15-0 MMA, 15-0 BMMA) has put together a run that’s turned him into one of the top rising stars in the sport. He’s undefeated through his career, and despite 15 bouts, hasn’t seen much in the way of adversity. That was especially true in his opening-round bout in the Bellator featherweight grand prix, which he won against Georgi Karakhanyan in a mere eight seconds.

Campos (20-9 MMA, 9-7 BMMA) isn’t on board with McKee being the next big thing, though. The grizzled veteran specifically picked a matchup with McKee for the quarterfinals of the single-elimination tournament, which continues on Saturday at Bellator 236.

“Without a doubt I believe I am going to be A.J.’s biggest test,” Campos told MMA Junkie. “He’s fought a lot of guys, but who are they? The only two guys that come to mind that he’s fought are Justin Lawrence and Pat Curran. I’m going to be the guy that derails A.J.’s hype train.

“You look at the difference between the other guys he’s fought then Lawrence and Curran. Totally a night-and-day difference. Those guys are superior athletes and fighters and A.J. was able to barely get by with them. He’s got holes in his game, I see weaknesses I’m looking to capitalize on.”

Bellator 236 takes place at Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii. The main card, which featured Campos vs. McKee in the co-main event, streams on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.

Campos punched his ticket to the tourney’s second round when he beat former Bellator champ Daniel Straus at Bellator 226 in September. Given the structure of the tournament, he was allowed to pick his opponent for the next round, and went with McKee.

It’s a matchup others in the field were seemingly not chomping at the bit to get, but Campos feels he has a strong path to victory.

“I want to grind him out,” Campos said. “I want to take him to deep waters, I want to put him in the most uncomfortable positions I can put him in and I want to see where his heart is. I want to break his will, I want to be the one that beats him and takes away that zero on his record.”

With Campos vs. McKee being the first fight in the second round of the tournament, the winner will likely see a sizable break waiting for the semifinals to commence. 2019 is the first time since 2013 that Campos has fought more than twice in a year, though, so he said he’s not overly concerned about a break.

“There’s potential for a bit of a layoff after this, but I will put it to good use trying to heal up and make good with my body,” Campos said. “But first I plan to go in there and handle business. People are going to count me out here and they’re going to count me out of the rest of the tournament, but that’s what I like. That’s what motivates me. I like to be the underdog and regardless, I’m going to go get that title.”

Point of interest: Slugging vs. styling

The co-main event for Bellator 236 features a fun installment of the featherweight grand prix, as a heavy-handed slugger takes on a stylish prospect on the rise.

A hard-hitting hombre, [autotag]Derek Campos[/autotag] is no stranger to the heat of a firefight. Although he’s shown the ability to work behind a guard and counter when pressed, Campos is a come-forward, blood and guts fighter in almost every sense of the word.

The native of Lubbock, Texas is more than happy to prove his medal in the pocket by exchanging hooks, but has quietly sharpened his brand of brawling as of late. Now, it is not uncommon to see Campos shift off of his power hand coming forward, as he will also shift to southpaw for safe distancing when finishing combinations.

Campos has had plenty of experience striking with southpaws (having mixed results), so I’m curious as to how he intends on dealing with [autotag]AJ McKee[/autotag].

A home-grown Bellator product and one of (if not the) top prospects in MMA today, McKee has been able to keep his record unblemished since making his professional debut with the promotion. Primarily operating out of a southpaw stance, McKee makes plenty of hay with his left hand – both coming forward and off the counter.

The 24-year-old talent is also not beyond working from both sides, as he seems to readily switch his stance should the situation call for it. And when feeling in stride, McKee will attach kicks or knees to his combinations, seemingly improvising around what he sees his opposition doing.

That said, Campos is the kind of fighter who commands respect for the duration of the entire fight time, which makes me wonder how McKee will approach this challenge.
