Update: It is feared that Overshown has torn his right ACL. MRI results pending.

The Cowboys have been fortunate thus far in the build up to the season, avoiding the multitude of injuries that can derail a campaign before it starts. On Saturday night though, the club and fans had to hold their breath as a 2023 draft pick was down on the ground for too long. Rookie linebacker DeMarvion Overshown made a tackle on the second drive of the game but was unable to get to his feet along the sideline.

Overshown was eventually able to walk off on his own, which is a positive sign, but took the cart into the locker room for further evaluation. Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com reported he is out for the game, but noted the club is going to be quick to rule players out during the preseason.

Overshown was a third-round pick out of The University of Texas and had a stellar debut last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He seems to have caught on quickly and if healthy would be a rotational piece for Dan Quinn’s defense early in the season while clocking special teams snaps as well.

Building blocks among 3 things to watch for in Cowboys-Seahawks

What can fans look for the Cowboys to expand on in Game 2 of the preseason? | From @cdpiglet

Winning and losing take on different meanings in the preseason as compared to the regular season. In the regular season, the point total is what determines a successful outing, but exhibition-game success is measured differently. The Dallas Cowboys “lost” to the Jacksonville Jaguars in their first preseason game of 2023, but in reality, Dallas left that game feeling like they won overall.

The Cowboys’ second-team defense handled the Jaguars’ first-team offense with a forced turnover and a three-and-out, and had a bunch of guys on the bubble show up and look like potential contributors. Most importantly, they left the game with no serious injury concerns.

Now the team turns to a road game against the Seattle Seahawks and looks to continue to improve on the work they have done all training camp, but especially what they saw in real game reps last week. Here are some things fans should keep an eye on in this game that could help tell the story about the 53-man rosters and the success of the team going forward.

WATCH: Longhorns experience first NFL preseason action

DeMarvion Overshown and Roschon Johnson impressed in first preseason games.

The Texas Longhorns develop players now. Move linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and running back Roschon Johnson to the top of the list of developed players.

As most would know, Overshown was converted from safety to linebacker in his time at Texas. His coverage skills paired with his hitting ability make him a complete outside linebacker. He enjoyed a good first outing for the Dallas Cowboys will a big money down stop of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Roschon Johnson displayed his tackle breaking ability on Saturday. The now Chicago Bears running back broke several tackles on his way to a chunk play.

Both players converted from one position to another in college. Each went on to leave his own mark on the program in their time in Austin. Here’s a look at highlights from the two players’ important preseason showcase.

3 revelations that emerged from Cowboys’ preseason opener

The Dallas Cowboys’ comeback against the Jacksonsville Jaguars in the exhibition opener fell short. ending in a 28-23 loss at AT&T Stadium. It was the first of three games the Cowboys will play in the quote-unquote meaningless preseason. In the big picture, preseason games mean very little to a team’s season. Winning isn’t the primary objective like it is when games matter.

Instead the Cowboys will focus on getting units some work together to build continuity, getting young guys reps in real games, but mainly just leave each game without any big injuries and it’s a win at the end of the day. This doesn’t mean fans and analysts can’t find some important things to take from these games though. Players breakout, or teams show new wrinkles in their game plans just to name a couple. Here are some things the contest revealed for Dallas.

LB Morice Blackwell to have a major role for Texas in 2023

The Longhorns will need new players to step up at linebacker in 2023.

After being moved to safety last spring due to being slightly undersized as a linebacker, Morice Blackwell is now back at the linebacker spot for the Longhorns.

On3 recently stated Blackwell has worked extremely hard this offseason even drawing praise from head coach Steve Sarkisian. It was also revealed that he is playing heavier than his listed weight of 208 pounds. Sarkisian raved about his versatility and the effort level he brings to the table.

“He’s a heck of a player,” Sarkisian said. “I love the competitive nature of Mo. We asked a lot of him as a true freshman on special teams. He plays violent. He plays tough. I think he plays the way we want to play football, and he provides a lot of versatility.”

Now that Texas’ long-time leader on defense, DeMarvion Overshown, is in the NFL, Blackwell will be vying for more snaps. He and David Gbenda are expected to duke it out for the starting role, but even if Blackwell isn’t named the starter On3’s Steve Habel is confident that he will see snaps regardless.

Blackwell is going play plenty no matter who the starter ends up being at that position. He’ll factor at both Will and Sam, and his versatility will be utilized often by Pete Kwiatkowski on conventional downs and Jeff Banks on special teams.

Replacing both the football success and leadership qualities of Overshown won’t be an easy task, but luckily Teas will be able to pair Blackwell or Gbenda with one of the best linebackers in the country in Jaylan Ford.

Draft reaction: Dallas Cowboys select LB DeMarvion Overshown No. 90 overall

Draft reaction: Dallas Cowboys select Texas LB DeMarvion Overshown No. 90 overall

The Dallas Cowboys added yet another athletic piece to their linebacking unit by adding the versatile linebacker from Texas DeMarvion Overshown in the third round.

A former defensive back for the Longhorns, Overshown made the transition to the linebacker position during the 2020 season and did not look back. His skillset as a former defensive back shines through in his agility and athletic ability to roam sideline to sideline, and he made the most of this transition. During his senior season Overshown put on a clinic wracking up 67 tackles, 23 quarterback pressures, three sacks, and giving up a quarterback rating of 93.7 when thrown at. Overshown’s ability to play man coverage with tight ends and move sideline to sideline will serve him well in a varied defense at the next level.

Overshown likely will not be the starter to open the season with veterans Leighton Vander Esch and Damone Clark manning the linebacker positions ahead of him, but given that the Cowboys linebackers have missed time, Overhsown could be forced into action early. There is also a shot that Dallas moves on from one of their starters going into next season, which would leave Overshown with plenty of opportunity moving forward.

DeMarvion Overshown lives his dream in playing for Cowboys, Longhorns

“You have two dreams if you play football at a young age: Play for the Texas Longhorns or the Dallas Cowboys.”

Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is living the dream. The former Longhorns standout and first team all-conference selection can now check playing for his childhood dream teams off his bucket list.

Overshown discussed his football career with Dallas media after being drafted by the Cowboys.

“It’s special. Especially when you think back to when you were a little boy. You have two dreams if you play football at a young age. It’s to either play for the Texas Longhorns or play for the Dallas Cowboys. And I got to do both. So it’s a blessing. … I can’t stop smiling about it. And even when people ask me about it and I say I’m a Dallas Cowboy… it’s crazy, because that’s all I dreamed of being.”

While the talented player is fortunate to play for his top two teams, Overshown has earned each honor he’s been given.

The former five-star prospect was seemingly everything his team needed at linebacker last season. Now, he’ll look to bring that level of dependability to the Cowboys.

DeMarvion Overshown matches a familiar LB profile for Cowboys

This isn’t the first time the Cowboys drafted a linebacker like DeMarvion Overshown, says @ReidDHanson. Just a couple years ago Dallas drafted a similar one.

Sensing a shift in the NFL game where offenses use dynamic running backs and tight ends to create mismatches downfield, the Cowboys are targeting a different kind of linebacker these days.

Those stoutly-built, downhill run-stuffers of old are largely a thing of the past. In today’s pro game, linebackers must possess lateral mobility, spatial awareness and a fluid lower body capable of keeping up with the diverse attacks offensive coordinators throw at them. So it should be of no surprise the Cowboys used a mid-round draft pick to bring in a hybrid linebacker who thrives in coverage and playing in space.

Measuring 6-foot-3, 232 pounds, this young linebacker earned a reputation at one of the most prominent football schools in the land as a leader and playmaker. He was fast, loose-hipped, and fluid in coverage. He could play sideline to sideline and handle nearly any coverage match-up from the slot.

The year was 2021 and the player was Jabril Cox.

It’s safe to say there are some similarities between the linebacker Dallas drafted in 2021 and the one they drafted in 2023. Picked in the third round, University of Texas’ DeMarvion Overshown picks up right where Cox’s profile left off.

Overshown, 6-foot-3, 229 pounds, is a highly athletic safety-turned-linebacker. He plays with tremendous range and is comfortable in space vs the run and pass. He’s extremely athletic and fluid in his movements, allowing him to keep up with RBs, TEs and even WRs.

Overshown packs more punch as a pass-rusher, but generally speaking, he’s a very similar profile to Cox, who was drafted just two years before. Where might the rookie play in 2023?

Speaking to 105.3 The Fan, Will McClay broke down his expectations for his rookie LB out of Texas.

“WILL (weakside) linebacker type,” McClay said of Overshown. “One of the things you look for is finding guys who can match up athletically with tight ends and receivers.”

Dallas hasn’t given up on Cox, but they have yet to see him develop into the player they thought he would when they picked him in the fourth round. He’s had trouble picking up some of the assignments in Dan Quinn’s defense and has had his share of bad luck regarding injuries, tearing his ACL in 2021.

2023 could easily be seen as a make-or-break season for Cox considering the Cowboys just added a player like Overshown who fits his same profile and might even offer a bit more.

According to PFF tracking data, Cox logged most of his snaps at MIKE last season (the same position Leighton Vander Esch plays). But Cox’s profile arguably fits the WILL position best so there is a good chance Cox will compete with Overshown over the same role in 2023.

Given the lack of depth at the LB position, both players can easily fit on the Cowboys roster in 2023.  But if Cox doesn’t establish himself early in camp, he could easy get leapfrogged by Overshown on the depth chart.

Dallas has a type they’ve been hunting for in recent drafts. They’ve been looking for the next generation of LB who thrives in coverage. Hitting on one of their two prospects could go a long way in eliminating some advantages teams like San Francisco and the Eagles have had over them.
