NC State’s Payton Wilson could be a great Demario Davis understudy

NC State linebacker Payton Wilson could be a great fit for the Saints. He’s hoping to learn from a veteran in the NFL, and there isn’t one better than Demario Davis:

How important is it for the New Orleans Saints to spend a high draft pick on a linebacker this year? With Demario Davis being the oldest linebacker in the NFL and Pete Werner’s development stalling out — while Zack Baun has a good chance at leaving for a better scheme fit in free agency — you could rank it pretty high among the team’s needs. Davis is entering a contract year, too.

Enter Payton Wilson: arguably the most experienced linebacker in the draft, who is confident he’s this year’s best athlete, too. He’ll have an opportunity to prove it when the linebackers go through speed and agility drills on Thursday night at the NFL Scouting Combine.

But Wilson credits his college success to developing his understanding of the game, and he knows there’s still plenty he needs to learn. When he turns pro, he hopes to find a mentor and soak up every lesson he can like a sponge. We’ll let him tell it.

“I’m going into a whole different world where I’m going to play against literally the smartest players to ever play the game,” Wilson said Wednesday during his media availability session. “Whenever I get to an NFL team I’m going to find the closest vet that I can to me, I’m going to model my routine after them. I’m going to get in the film room with them every single day. I don’t believe you can play fast until you know what’s going on. I personally believe once I know the defense like the back of my hand and my football IQ is where it needs to be, I can be one of the best.”

And there are few better veterans to learn from than Davis. The two-time Pro Bowler and frequent All-Pro linebacker has enjoyed more success in the back half of his career after coming to New Orleans and thriving in Dennis Allen’s defense. Wilson, who weighed in at 6-foot-3 and 233 pounds, sure sounds like a worthy protege after overcoming adversity with a couple of injuries.

Wilson persevered through two ACL tears (one in high school, another at NC State) and shoulder surgery (in 2022), but his medical checks at the combine came back clean and he says feedback from NFL teams was positive. He’s currently seen as someone who could be picked in the second round but his stock could rise through the pre-draft process.

In his career, Wilson has logged more than 2,400 snaps across 47 games for the Wolfpack while recording 48 tackles for loss and intercepting seven passes. And he was recognized as the recipient of the Butkus Award and the Chuck Bednarik Award after his 2023 senior season. He has all the ability in the world, and he’s hoping to land in the right situation to cultivate it in the NFL. Learning from Davis might be the best fit for him.

Next steps for the Saints after NFL sends 2024 salary cap to the moon

The NFL’s heightened 2024 salary cap brings a big boost for the Saints. They’re a couple of moves away from reaching cap compliance:

The NFL’s heightened 2024 salary cap brings a big boost for the New Orleans Saints. With the cap taking an unprecedented $30 million jump this offseason, the Saints are just a couple of moves away from reaching cap compliance — and then some. They’ll be able to clear enough room to make some noise in free agency and enter the bidding for talented veterans.

With the NFL announcing that this year’s salary cap is set at a record $255.4 million, the experts at Over The Cap estimate the Saints to be in the red by a little over $40 million. That’s less than half of the $83 million hole New Orleans sat in entering the offseason. But there’s more work to be done. Here’s how the Saints can clear their remaining negative cap space and open up more resources to take into free agency:

Demario Davis on Ryan Nielsen: I don’t know if there’s a better coach

Saints linebacker Demario Davis has nothing but great things to say about new Jaguars DC Ryan Nielsen.

It’s been a couple years since the New Orleans Saints’ two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Demario Davis played under defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen, but the coach clearly made an impression.

“Coach Nielsen is a phenomenal coach, a phenomenal defensive mind,” Davis told Juston Lewis of the Florida Times-Union at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games. “Definitely made our defense better, especially from a front-seven standpoint.

“I don’t know if there’s a better coach in the game, not to take anything away from anybody, but I think anybody who’s played on his defensive line just understands from a technique standpoint, from an intensity standpoint, from a detail standpoint.”

Nielsen, 44, spent six seasons as a defensive line coach for the Saints and worked as co-defensive coordinator in his last season with the team. In 2023, Nielsen left to spend one season as defensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons.

He made strong impressions at that stop too. Atlanta’s Pro Bowl safety Jessie Bates III gave pass rusher Josh Allen a rave review of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ new defensive coordinator and Bates told the Times-Union good things about the coach too.

Jacksonville finished 17th in points allowed last season and 22nd in yards allowed. While the team finished eighth in takeaways and had two pass rushers finish with double-digit sacks, Mike Caldwell was fired as the team’s defensive coordinator shortly after the season ended.

Nielsen, who helped the Falcons climb from 27th in yards allowed in 2022 to 11th in 2023, has been tasked with helping the Jaguars make a similar jump in 2024.

Baker Mayfield and Demario Davis named Co-MVP of the Pro Bowl

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield and linebacker Demario Davis were awarded MVP of the Pro Bowl

Two former Cleveland Browns captains, quarterback Baker Mayfield, and linebacker Demario Davis, were named the co-MVP of the Pro Bowl. The pair helped lead the Eli Manning-coached NFC over Peyton Manning and the AFC.

Mayfield was named the offensive MVP after he led the NFC to victory. Mayfield replaced Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Mayfield’s football season isn’t over quite yet. Mayfield is a nominee for the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award. The award will be presented at the NFL Honors Award Show on February 8. His competition includes Damar Hamlin, and Joe Flacco after the work he did with the Cleveland Browns.

Davis played with the Cleveland Browns for one season in 2016 before Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams shipped him away. Davis found a home in New Orleans, blossoming into a leader. He has achieved five All-Pro teams with the Saints.

The Browns were well-represented in the Pro Bowl. Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, David Njoku, Joel Bitonio, and Amari Cooper were selected for the team in January. Bitonio and Cooper didn’t participate in the Pro Bowl, focusing on recovering from the injuries that haunted them at the end of the season.

Wyatt Teller was invited after Bitonio opted out, and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah replaced T.J. Watt after he declined.

While their AFC team fell short, the players left an impact over the weekend. Njoku had a small war of words with Micah Parsons over the weekend. Ward finished the weekend strong with a spectacular interception during the game. The Browns stars will take the field next in August for the 2024 preseason.

Demario Davis named Defensive MVP of the 2024 Pro Bowl Games

Saints linebacker Demario Davis was named the Defensive MVP of the 2024 Pro Bowl Games for his performance in dodgeball and flag football:

Demario Davis represented the New Orleans Saints well at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games — a standout in the NFC versus AFC dodgeball game, flag football scrimmage, and other skills challenges, Davis was recognized as the all-star game’s defensive most valuable player.

And when he took the stage to accept that award, Davis delivered a characteristic speech thanking his teammates and paying respect to his opponents coaching the AFC all-star team.

“Man, firstly man I had a lot of great teammates. The best in the business, they played awesome, I’ve got to give an amazing shoutout to them,” Davis said. “It was great being on the NFC team, the winning team, but most importantly being on the winning team, which is the kingdom of God. That’s where my power comes from, that’s where my glory goes. Being on this stage with the greats like Eli Manning, DeMarcus Ware, going against Peyton Manning, Ray Lewis, the legends of the game, you know you’ve got to be locked in mentally and that’s how we showed up. It’s an honor to be here.”

There’s a couple of Pro Football Hall of Famers in that group, and Davis might join them someday. He’s now been selected for two Pro Bowls while earning five consecutive All-Pro selections. He’s continued to defy Father Time late into his career and is on track to continue earning accolades. Whether or not he goes the distance to earn a bronze bust in Canton, he’s a Saints legend through and through.

Demario Davis named Saints’ 2023 MVP by CBS Sports

It’s no contest: Demario Davis was named the New Orleans Saints’ 2023 MVP by CBS Sports

The New Orleans Saints did not have a great season, but it wasn’t all bad. Players like Demario Davis solidified their talents once again with great seasons. Davis was given recognition this week when CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan named him the Saints’ MVP for this season.

Davis has been elite since getting to New Orleans, one of the franchise’s best free agent signings ever. Now, he gets his second straight and overall career Pro Bowl as well.

This season Davis led the team (by far) in tackles with 121 total. He was second on the team in sacks with 6.5. Not only is he a leader on the field, but he is clearly the team’s leader in the locker room as well. His presence was much needed after the retirement of Drew Brees.

CBS Sports wasn’t alone in viewing Davis as the Saints’ MVP, as there was a near-consensus among our staff when we handed out our season awards. He’s an impactful player on the field and a positive influence in the locker room. What more can you ask for?

Erik McCoy named to his first career Pro Bowl Games appearance

Erik McCoy, a first-time New Orleans Saints team captain in 2023, has been selected for his first career Pro Bowl Games appearance:

Congratulations are in order for Erik McCoy: the New Orleans Saints center has been added to the 2024 Pro Bowl Games roster, where he’ll join two teammates — punt returns specialist Rashid Shaheed and linebacker Demario Davis.

McCoy was selected as an alternate, replacing injured Detroit Lions starter Frank Ragnow. He and Philadelphia Eagles icon Jason Kelce will be representing the NFC.

It’s the first Pro Bowl selection for McCoy in his NFL career, and it’s well-earned. He was the team’s best offensive lineman in 2023 and did a lot to stabilize a group that could have fallen into disarray after some early struggles. McCoy was also named a Saints team captain for the first time this season. Hopefully he and his family can enjoy this experience in Orlando before shifting gears to prepare for a pivotal 2024 season.

Demario Davis selected for 2024 Pro Bowl Games as an alternate

Saints captain Demario Davis has been selected for 2024 Pro Bowl Games as an alternate, replacing Super Bowl-bound 49ers linebacker Fred Warner:

Congratulations are in order for Demario Davis: the New Orleans Saints linebacker has been selected for the 2024 Pro Bowl Games as an alternate, replacing San Francisco 49ers starter Fred Warner on the NFC roster. He’s the first Saints linebacker selected for back-to-back Pro Bowls since Jonathan Vilma did it in 2009 and 2010.

Davis, 35, was also named to the Pro Bowl Games last season for the first time in his impressive NFL career. He’s earned All-Pro recognition in each of the last five years with the Saints but this is just his second Pro Bowl Games appearance. He’ll be joining teammate Rashid Shaheed at this year’s event.

The 2024 Pro Bowl Games will feature several days of contests between the NFC and AFC all-star rosters, leading up to a flag football game scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 4 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. Fans can tune in on ESPN, ABC, Disney XD, ESPN+, and ESPN Deportes.

Musts, needs, and wants: Highlighting the New Orleans Saints’ areas of concern for 2024 with targets for free agency and the NFL draft

It’s no secret that the New Orleans Saints are a flawed team: their three-year playoffs drought is proof of it. So changes are obviously going to be needed this offseason. But where to begin? Who could cure what ails them?

Some disgruntled fans are calling for an overhaul of team leadership with a new head coach, general manager, and quarterback, but none of those things are going to happen this offseason. We need to keep expectations realistic.

Here are some positions of need the Saints should prioritize in the spring, along with realistic free agent targets and possible draft prospects who might be available when New Orleans is on the clock.
