Sooners to the NFL: Where did Oklahoma’s draft prospects end up after the 2022 NFL draft?

Where did each Oklahoma Sooners draft prospect end up after the 2022 NFL draft weekend?

The Oklahoma Sooners had seven players taken in the 2022 NFL draft. That was tied with Alabama for fifth-most draft picks in this year’s draft. Georgia led the way with 15 picks while the SEC continued its dominance of sending players to the draft. They had 17 more draft selections than the Big 10 and 40 more players picked than the Big 12.

The Sooners didn’t hear a name called in the first round, which wasn’t surprising based on the way the players were ranked or being selected in mock drafts leading up to this weekend.

It was a long wait but finally, with the last pick of the second round, Nik Bonitto came off the board to the Denver Broncos. That last pick of the second round also happens to be the same pick in which the Kansas City Chiefs selected Creed Humphrey the year before. Will Bonitto have a similar impact in his rookie season?

In total, 11 of the 12 Oklahoma Sooners prospects have found new teams. Seven draft picks and four as undrafted free agents. The only one left without a new home at the moment is Gabe Brkic. An NFL team will likely bring him in for a tryout in the next few weeks or during training camp to compete for a kicking job.

Let’s look at where each Sooner will be making their new home.

Sooners safety Delarrin Turner-Yell to Denver Broncos in round five

The Broncos have now taken a pair of Sooners in the 2022 NFL draft after selecting Safety Delarrin Turner-Yell in the fifth round

The Denver Broncos have selected the former Oklahoma safety Delarrin Turner-Yell with the No. 152 overall pick in the fifth round of the NFL draft.

The three-year starter was a stabilizing presence in the Sooners’ defensive backfield when healthy. That, however, is the caveat with Turner-Yell. His health has been a problem for him. In his three years as a starter, he played a full season once in 2019.

Turner-Yell is the fourth Sooner off the board and will join Nik Bonitto in Denver. The Broncos seemed to like what they saw in Norman last season.

The Broncos came into the draft needing a safety, and one that has the athleticism and speed of Turner-Yell is a fun thing to have when going up against Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Los Angeles’ Justin Herbert four times per season. Throw in Derek Carr and the Las Vegas Raiders and that’s three pass-heavy offenses going up against the Broncos twice a year.

If there’s one thing the Broncos do well, it’s developing defensive backs. After trading a bounty of picks to the Seattle Seahawks to get Russell Wilson, they needed to hit on their later picks in this draft.

Turner-Yell won’t be a day-one starter, but he has all the attributes of an NFL safety. If he can stay healthy, this could end up being a steal for Broncos Country.

Where Oklahoma Sooners prospects rank heading into Day 3 of the 2022 NFL draft

After Nik Bonitto and Brian Asamoah were taken on Day 2, there are several Sooners still available for the final day of the 2022 NFL draft.

Heading into Day 3 of the 2022 NFL draft, several Sooners have yet to hear their name called. The only real surprise is Perrion Winfrey, who was projected to go in the top 100 picks by nearly every mock draft we’ve evaluated over the last four months.

Whoever takes the talented defensive line prospect is going to get a steal.

But the Sooners have several really good players remaining on the board that could impact teams in Year 1. [autotag]Isaiah Thomas[/autotag], [autotag]Kennedy Brooks[/autotag], [autotag]Marquis Hayes[/autotag] and [autotag]Delarrin Turner-Yell[/autotag] would provide solid depth and could develop into starters at the NFL level.

[autotag]Gabe Brkic[/autotag] could kick for a number of NFL teams, but kicker is one of those positions that doesn’t always get drafted. The same goes for [autotag]Jeremiah Hall[/autotag]. He could be a starting fullback in the NFL, but will teams value the position enough to spend a draft pick.

[autotag]Michael Woods[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyrese Robinson[/autotag] can help some teams, but they may have their choice of teams as undrafted free agents.

Let’s take a look at the remaining Oklahoma Sooners draft prospects, and how they ranked according to Dane Brugler, Matt Miller and Bleacher Report.

6 Oklahoma 2022 NFL draft prospects on Bleacher Reports Top 300

The day has finally arrived for the 12 Oklahoma Sooners who declared for the 2022 NFL draft. The Oklahoma Sooners will be well-represented through the seven-round and 262 picks over the three-day event in Las Vegas.

The guy most likely to be picked first is edge rusher Nik Bonitto. The Sooners star was Oklahoma’s best defender the last two seasons. Though he may not get his name called on night one of the draft, Bonitto will most assuredly get selected Friday night.

Perrion Winfrey and Brian Asamoah will likely join Bonitto in being a Friday night selection, though recent mock drafts have them going in the third round.

In the top 300 released by Bleacher Report’s draft analysts, a new Oklahoma player stands out among Sooners prospects.

Marquis Hayes was their highest-ranked Sooner coming in at No. 61. The project him to be a starter at the NFL level. His experience and physicality are traits that NFL teams love. And there’s plenty of tape of him moving in space as a part of Lincoln Riley’s rushing attack.

Could this ranking from Bleacher Report signify Hayes as a potential second round target for teams?

In all, six Oklahoma Sooners were ranked within their top 300. Missing were Kennedy Brooks, Michael Woods, Tyrese Robinson, Jeremiah Hall, and LaRon Stokes, and Gabe Brkic.

The only player that hasn’t shown up in mock drafts this spring is Stokes, whose limited playing time and production put a damper on an athletic player who could grow into a player in the USFL or XFL

As you get ready for the NFL draft, take a look at how Bleacher Report ranked the Oklahoma Sooners draft prospects.

5 Sooners to watch on defense in the Oklahoma spring game

A look at five defensive players to watch as the Oklahoma Sooners gear up for their Spring game.

There’s something to be said about how exciting this particular spring game will be for Oklahoma Sooners’ fans far and wide. A new head coach ushers in a new era with a new defensive staff and a fresh, proven mind at offensive coordinator. A new vision will be on display while the Sooners have an abundance of position battles that need to be sorted out.

For now, we’ll focus on the defensive side of things where there’s been significantly more turnover and also the heaviest influx of new faces that will debut in Crimson and Cream for the first time this weekend.

Brent Venables’ wizardry as a defensive coordinator is widely known. It’s no stretch to say he’s probably been year in and year out the best defensive coordinator in college football for the last decade. He returns to the school that really catapulted his career in Oklahoma as the head coach but you can rest assured he brought his elite defensive coaching with him. He retooled the defensive staff entirely and led the charge into the transfer portal as the Sooners went shopping for defensive bodies to fit Venables’ scheme for the immediate future and the years to come.

With that said, here are five players to watch for as we see a glimpse at what Brent Venables and defensive coordinator Ted Roof have in store for Big 12 offenses this fall.

Oklahoma Sooners Spring Game: Stream, broadcast info for Saturday

How to watch or listen and start time for Oklahoma’s spring game on Saturday.

The Oklahoma Sooners will play their annual spring game this Saturday, April 23, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

It’s a dawn of a new era for the Oklahoma Sooners. Though [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his coaching staff have been in town for four months now, the Sooners’ spring game marks a seminal moment to kick off the Venables era. It’s the coaches’ and fans’ first opportunity to see the team play in a game-like situation.

“We’re going to split the squad up. I’m going to have a Red and White team. Dillon (Gabriel) will play a little bit of quarterback for both sides, but otherwise, we’re going to split it evenly,” Venables shared with the media on Tuesday. “Coaches as well. We’ll name the head coaches here another day, as well. We’ll let the players know by Thursday who’s on what team, and then we’ll have it all juiced up on different sidelines.”

With 12 players declared for next week’s NFL draft and quite a few who departed via the transfer portal, the Sooners have quite a few snaps up for grabs as they close out the spring. Saturday’s game will prove to be a big-time opportunity for someone to assert themselves in their position battles ahead of the 2022 college football season.

Here’s when you should tune in to see the game:

  • Date: April 23
  • Time: 3 p.m. CT
  • Live Stream: SoonerSports.com (Subscription Required)
  • Listen: Streaming on The Varsity Network App
  • Ticket Info can be found at SoonerSports.com
  • Replay of the event will be shown on Bally Sports Saturday night at 10:30 p.m. CT and on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. CT.

Oklahoma injury report:

No injuries have been disclosed.

Players to watch:

At quarterback [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] is expected to play for both the red and the white teams during the spring game. Sooners fans will get their first opportunity to see highly-regarded freshman [autotag]Nick Evers[/autotag]. Evers is the favorite to win the quarterback job.

In the passing game, Oklahoma’s looking to replace four of their top five pass-catchers from 2021, but the return of [autotag]Theo Wease[/autotag], who sat out nearly all of 2021 bodes huge for this team.

Running back has a lot of talent led by [autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag]. [autotag]Marcus Major[/autotag] is bouncing back from a 2021 season marred by academic ineligibility. [autotag]Jovantae Barnes[/autotag] has been turning heads in camp for his progression during his first semester with the Sooners.

The offensive line returns three of their five starters and picked up a huge addition via the portal in [autotag]McKade Mettauer[/autotag]. How this unit improves from last season and gels together for 2022 are huge storylines to follow in the spring game and this summer.

On defense, how they replace the production from the defensive linemen who departed for the NFL draft is the biggest question Oklahoma’s facing. [autotag]Ethan Downs[/autotag], [autotag]Reggie Grimes[/autotag], [autotag]Marcus Stripling[/autotag], and Jonah La’ulu figure to make up the defensive end rotation while newcomer [autotag]Jeffery Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalen Redmond[/autotag] appear to be the starters along the interior defensive line.

Linebacker appears to be the deepest position group on the roster led by [autotag]DaShaun White[/autotag] and [autotag]David Ugwoegbu[/autotag]. [autotag]Shane Whitter[/autotag] and [autotag]Danny Stutsman[/autotag] will play significant roles and newcomers [autotag]Kobie McKinzie,[/autotag] Jaren Kanak, and [autotag]Kip Lewis[/autotag] could factor into the rotation in 2022.

In the secondary, the Sooners have to replace [autotag]Delarrin Turner-Yell[/autotag] and [autotag]Pat Fields[/autotag], two players with a ton of experience. They’ve got potential answers in [autotag]Key Lawrence[/autotag], [autotag]Justin Broiles[/autotag], and [autotag]Billy Bowman[/autotag], but who starts for the Sooners at safety remains to be seen.

Which Oklahoma Sooners made ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller’s top 300 for the 2022 NFL draft?

As the 2022 NFL Draft approaches ESPN Draft Analyst Matt Miller released his top 300 prospects with nine Oklahoma Sooners making the cut.

Draft season is about to come to a close when the 2022 NFL draft kicks off next Thursday night. The Oklahoma Sooners will be well-represented over the three day event with anywhere from six to 10 players getting their name called.

Over the last few weeks we’ve looked at where Dane Brugler of The Athletic has the Sooners draft prospects ranked in his draft guide “The Beast” and where they went in his full seven-round mock draft.

CBS Sports followed that up with their own seven-round mock draft and as many as seven Sooners were selected in each of the pre-draft projections.

It’s that time of year where teams and analysts finalize their big boards. What’s notable with Oklahoma prospects is the diversity of thought that’s come to pass on certain prospects. Others have seen a decline or rise in value. In particular it feels like Nik Bonitto and Perrion Winfrey have settled into a mid second to early third round picks.

Brian Asamoah and Isaiah Thomas on the other hand have a wide range of potential outcomes depending on how the draft falls.

Delarrin Turner-Yell looks to have made himself a draftable asset with his work in meetings with teams. His name continues to pop up in rankings and mock drafts. He might be a late-round selection, but he’ll get picked.

Today, we’re taking a look at ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller’s Top 300 prospects for the 2022 NFL draft. Nine Sooners were  ranked inside his top 300.

7 Oklahoma Sooners selected in CBS Sports 7 round mock draft

Led by Nik Bonitto to the Atlanta Falcons, 7 Oklahoma Sooners were selected in CBS Sports’ latest 32-team 7-round mock draft.

The 2022 NFL draft gets underway next Thursday night and draft analysts across the industry are getting in their final mock drafts. Last week, Dane Brugler of The Athletic provided a seven-round mock draft for all 32 teams, with seven Oklahoma Sooners selected in the draft.

This week, it’s Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports that takes a stab at projecting the seven rounds of the draft. Again, seven Oklahoma Sooners are selected in the mock draft.

What’s noticeable between the two mocks is that [autotag]Kennedy Brooks[/autotag] has been left out. A player who amassed three 1,000-yard seasons and averaged 7.0 yards per carry for his career doesn’t hear his name called. Sure, running back has been devalued by the NFL due to their longevity in the league, but he’s a player that should get drafted. He was too productive.

The player that was in Brugler’s mock that didn’t show up here is [autotag]Gabe Brkic[/autotag]. Kickers are always a mystery when it comes to the draft. Teams feel like they can get one in undrafted free agency. Teams typically prefer to use their late-round draft picks on players they don’t want to compete with in undrafted free agency.

The other surprise is that the first Oklahoma Sooner doesn’t come off the board until No. 74 overall, which is in the middle of the third round.

Let’s look at where each Oklahoma player is heading in this mock draft.

Oklahoma Safety Delarrin Turner-Yell taking a pre-draft visit with the Detroit Lions

Former Oklahoma Sooners safety, Delarrin Turner-Yell is taking a pre-draft visit with the Detroit Lions two weeks from the 2022 NFL draft.

A guy that’s been flying under the radar mostly because he wasn’t able to work out at Oklahoma’s pro day is safety Delarrin Turner-Yell. With the NFL draft two weeks away, Turner-Yell is getting the pre-draft treatment from today from the Detroit Lions.

According to Chris Burke of The Athletic, the former Sooners safety is one of the Lions 30-visits prior to the draft. Teams can officially have 30 players to their facilities for in-person meetings and workouts.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic gave Turner-Yell a fifth or sixth-round draft grade.

A three-year starter at Oklahoma, Turner-Yell was the strong safety in former defensive coordinator Alex Grinch’s 3-3-5 base scheme. When on the field, he brought a level of consistency to an otherwise inconsistent Sooners defense, finishing top-four on the team in tackles per game the past three seasons. Turner-Yell trusts his preparation and eye discipline, which allows him to play fast and be in the right position to make plays vs. the run and in coverage as a split safety. His toughness is a strength to his game, but his physical nature works against his durability, which is a potential problem in the NFL. Overall, Turner-Yell is undersized and will have his struggles in man coverage, but he is a decisive downhill alley runner with the range and intangibles that will appeal to NFL defensive coordinators. He will need to get better on special teams to help his long-term roster chances. – Brugler, The Athletic

If Turner-Yell were to get drafted by the Detroit Lions, he will have just missed out on attempting to cover Davante Adams, one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, who was recently traded to the Las Vegas Raiders.

When Sooners Wire spoke with Turner-Yell, ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine, Adams was the player the former Sooner was hoping he’d get a chance to cover and was looking forward to the challenge.

Still, without Adams, the NFC North has a challenging receiver to cover in his own right named Justin Jefferson. And more than that, he’d have to try to maintain coverage discipline against on the best passers of all-time, Aaron Rodgers.

Wherever Delarrin Turner-Yell ends up, he’ll be an asset in the running game and in the short area of the field in coverage. And he’s going to be a guy that gives a great effort.

NFL teams seem more willing than ever to utilize safeties who thrive playing in the box, which gives Delarrin Turner-Yell an opportunity to land on a team and find a role that will allow him to shine at the next level.
