Today is Tuesday, which brings us yet another day closer to the opening of the Florida Gators’ 2020 SEC-only football schedule this Saturday against Ole Miss. In the meantime, there is plenty to keep us occupied in the news from around the league and around the nation.

The top story today is the adjusted bowl predictions college sports editor Erick Smith put together for USA TODAY Sports now that the Big Ten is officially back in the fold. The Ohio State Buckeyes are the biggest beneficiary of the re-rankings.

In other news, former Florida State Seminoles and NFL standout Deion Sanders aims to “look good while we win'” at Jackson State. Monday, Sanders was dressed in blue and sporting a Jackson State hat as he addressed a crowd spread out for social distancing, made smaller by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Report: Deion Sanders to be a candidate for Jackson State head coaching job

Jackson State needs a head coach and it might have eyes for Hall of Famer Deion Sanders.

Deion Sanders is making moves off the field the way he used to as “Prime Time.” an NFL Hall of Famer.

Weeks after leaving NFL Network for Barstool Sports, comes a report the great defensive back and kick return will be a candidate for the just-opened head coaching position at Jackson State.

Per Football Scoop:

Deion Sanders is expected to be a candidate to become the next head coach at Jackson State, sources told FootballScoop on Monday.

Jackson State dismissed head coach John Hendrick earlier today, along with most of his staff. Offensive coordinator TC Taylor, retained from the previous staff, is also a candidate for the job, sources say.

The Tigers are not playing this fall along with the rest of the SWAC.

Sanders has spoken about wanting to coach in the past.

“I’m going to be a head coach in college football next year,” he said in a live appearance on Dan Patrick’s radio show at the Super Bowl. “I’m that definite. I’m that assured that I am.”

“This is something that is my calling,” he said later in the interview. “I’m going to coach college football. Head coach, not coach. Head coach.”

Deion Sanders joins Barstool Sports

Deion Sanders has joined Barstool Sports after leaving The NFL Network.

If there was any doubt — and the honchos will tell you there never was — Barstool Sports is ready for Prime Time. Officially.

Deion Sanders has joined Barstool Sports in the aftermath of his exit from The NFL Network.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive back and return specialist joined Barstool Wednesday.

Sanders, who exited NFL Network reportedly after declining to take a pay cut, will join the independent operation that relishes periodically (or more often) poking a finger in the eye of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Sanders will have a podcast, make regular appearances on the Pardon My Take podcast, and also be part of a Sunday pregame show.

Report: Deion Sanders leaving the NFL Network

Deion Sanders, one of the faces of the NFL Network broadcast team, is moving on.

Another big name on the move when it comes to broadcasters. Deion Sanders is leaving the NFL Network, Sports Business Journal reported Tuesday.

The former great NFL defensive back was is an NFL Network analyst and could be seen on a variety of shows throughout the season, per his bio.

On Sundays during the NFL season, Sanders joins host Chris Rose on NFL Network’s NFL GameDay Prime, providing interviews with all of the top playmakers from the day’s games.

An eight-time Pro Bowler, Sanders played 14 NFL seasons for the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens. He has 53 career interceptions – 22nd all-time – and his 25.1-yards per interception return average ranks second in NFL history (minimum 30 interceptions).

The Hall of Famer won two Super Bowls in 1994 with San Francisco 49ers win Super Bowl XXIX and again with the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX two years later. With Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors in 1994, Sanders became the first player in NFL history with two 90+ yard INT-returns for touchdowns in a season.

In 2011, Sanders was a part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s induction class. He is the only person in professional sports history to play in the World Series and the Super Bowl.

Former Falcons CB Deion Sanders was arguably the greatest defensive back in NFL history and one of the best athletes the league has ever seen. Drafted fifth overall by Atlanta in 1989, Sanders went on to win two Super Bowls, make eight Pro Bowls and be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

On June 13th, Brady put Shedeur Sanders, son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, through a workout at Berkeley Preparatory School.

New Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback Tom Brady has a reputation for helping young football players by going through drills and showing them the ropes.

On June 13th, Brady put Shedeur Sanders, son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, through a workout at Berkeley Preparatory School, per a report from ESPN’s Jenna Laine:

“Shedeur tweeted about the experience, and Brady posted about it in his Instagram stories, saying, “When you’re green, you grow…when you’re ripe, you rot.”

Deion Sanders also posted on his Instagram, “They’re things In Life even the father can’t teach the son but GOD always provides a way if there’s a will. @tombrady I thank u, appreciate & love the man,The father and the athlete u are. Brady has been known to take time to work out with and spend time with his friends’ and teammates’ sons. Former Michigan teammate David Terrell recalled Brady working out with his then-8-year-old son, David Terrell Jr., who is now a junior wide receiver at Howard.

“I could literally call Tom and tell him, ‘I’m in Miami,’ and he’ll be like, ‘OK, Dave, I’m here right now,'” Terrell said. “That’s the type of guy he is.”

Shedeur Sanders must be the envy of high school football players around the country.

Sanders, son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, worked out with Tom Brady on Saturday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback appeared to be giving Sanders some tips on quarterback during their session. Both Brady and Sanders posted about the workout on Instagram.

Sanders, a rising senior, plays at Trinity Christian School in Cedar Hill, Texas. The prospect has scholarship offers from five DI schools, including Alabama and Florida, according to 247 Sports. A little help from Brady might help in lengthening that list of offers from teams around the country.

Kurt Warner explains how Stephon Gilmore compares to Deion Sanders

There are some lovely parallels between Gilmore and Sanders’ games.

New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore drew a flattering comparison this offseason. NFL Network analyst and retired Rams quarterback Kurt Warner was asked whether there’s a player Gilmore resembles in playing style from Warner’s time in the NFL.

Warner dwelled on the question for a long while before sharing a player who Gilmore parallels stylistically.

“He reminds me of Deion Sanders the way he studies his craft and is a student of the game,” Warner told ESPN. “That’s what Deion was so good at — the technique, the little things, and the ability to understand the game. Obviously, Deion was ridiculously talented. But he understood the game in such a way, especially playing man coverages, strengths and weaknesses, reading body language and doing all that stuff. That reminds me a lot of Stephon, the way he plays the game,” Warner said after deliberation.

“Maybe not the top-end athleticism that Deion had. Maybe not the speed that Deion had. But the same kind of craft he plays with, so he would probably be the guy. Deion was a guy who would get up in your face a lot.”

Rod Woodson, Aeneas Williams expect big things from Darnay Holmes

A trio of Pro Football Hall of Famers have high expectations for New York Giants rookie cornerback Darnay Holmes.

When the New York Giants selected Darnay Holmes in the fourth round of this year’s draft, he immediately received a lot more hype than mid-rounders usually receive.

Holmes was widely considered a steal for the Giants, and his workload may have already grown given the legal troubles cornerback DeAndre Baker is facing.

A few weeks back, Sports Illustrated’s Bucky Brooks raved about the Giants’ fourth round selection, and now several Pro Football Hall of Famers have shared their thought and high expectations on the UCLA product.

Unlike most rookies, Holmes has a few contacts that may have prepped him for his adjustment to the NFL. Holmes’ father was a running back in the NFL in the mid-to-late 90s.

The Giants’ rookie has a few mentors who are members of Canton’s elite — Rod Woodson, Aeneas Williams and Deion Sanders have all mentored Holmes in his path to the NFL. Holmes was the recipient of the DB MVP at Sanders’ Prime21 camp in 2015.

“He might be the sleeper [defensive back] in the draft,” Woodson told ESPN. “I know he was taken in the fourth round. But I like his mindset. No coach can measure one’s heart and one’s mind until you start playing. I think when I’ve seen him playing and talked to Carnell and his son, just the way he moves and how fluid he is and has that recall during the games when people are doing stuff to him that makes you kind of excited to watch a player like that.”

But the admiration for Holmes didn’t end there as Sanders also had some high praise when he referred to the cornerback’s combine performance as both “flawless” and “unbelievable.”

As for his relationship with Aeneas Williams, Holmes was coached by Williams in 2016 for “Nike’s The Opening” and at the Senior Bowl in 2020.

“I was thinking in the back of my mind, a team is going to get a steal, I didn’t know when or where he was going to go, but I know he has a lot more value than where he was drafted. I can tell you that,” Williams said.

Depending on how the legal situation plays out with DeAndre Baker, the Giants may need Holmes to be more pro-ready than they anticipated when they drafted him in April. And although he’s unlikely to start on the outside, some nickel guys may be forced to step up in Baker’s potential absence, thrusting Holmes into a larger role.

Regardless of what his rookie season may entail, it seems that the Giants may have gotten serious value when they took Holmes in the fourth round.

Giants’ Chris Pettit: Darnay Holmes one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen

New York Giants director of college scouting Chris Pettit had high praise for CB Darnay Holmes, as did NFL legend Deion Sanders.

After the first few rounds of the NFL Draft, things become a bit of a crapshoot. It’s difficult enough to score big on first-round picks, let alone finding a diamond in the rough on Day 3.

However, that’s exactly what the New York Giants feel they have in their fourth-round pick, UCLA cornerback Darnay Holmes.

In a post-draft interview with Giants.com, director of college scouting Chris Pettit called Holmes one of the hardest working players he’s seen in nearly two decades of scouting and being involved in pro personnel.

“Darnay Holmes is someone, we interviewed him down at the Senior Bowl. He’s really at the top of it, just the way he came in and took over the room. He’s one of the hardest working players that I’ve evaluated in my career. All of the stuff that I’ve gotten back and all of the positive qualities about him. I’m really excited about what he’s going to bring to our team,” Pettit said.

Pettit wasn’t the only person who came away impressed with Holmes during the draft process. NFL legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders, also offered some high praise for the 21-year-old at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

The selection of Holmes in Round 4 has drawn heavy praise for the Giants, with several experts and anonymous AFC scouts proclaiming the UCLA grad to be the best nickel cornerback in the entire draft.
