The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell: Previewing the NFL’s conference championship games

In this week’s “Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar,” the guys get you ready for Ravens-Chiefs, and 49ers-Lions. It’s conference championship time!

And then, there were four! It’s time for the conference championship round of the NFL playoffs, deciding which teams will play in Super Bowl LVIII. Greg Cosell of NFL Films and ESPN’s NFL Matchup, and Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire and the USA Today Sports Media Group, are here to get you ready for the most interesting matchups.

Kansas City Chiefs at Baltimore Ravens

  • How will Lamar Jackson deal with Steve Spagnuolo’s unconventional blitzes?
  • Can Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco take over this game, and will “pin/pull” continue to be a thing?
  • Will Mike Macdonald’s Ravens defense cause Patrick Mahomes to hesitate in his process with all those coverage disguises?
  • How will Baltimore counter the Chiefs’ effective use of heavy personnel in the run and pass games?

Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers

  • Jared Goff has become much more than just a game manager, so how will Steve Wilks’ 49ers defense deal with that?
  • Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has done a brilliant job coaching up a cornerback-light roster. But will that turn into a pumpkin against Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers offense?
  • Is Brock Purdy’s bad game against the Packers in the divisional round indicative of vulnerabilities that can be exploited here?
  •  Will the Lions’ rookies on both sides of the ball be the ultimate difference in this game?

You can watch this week’s “Xs and Os,” previewing both conference championship games in detail, right here:

49ers practice update: WR Deebo Samuel in jersey, working on side field

Deebo Samuel isn’t practicing, but he’s not completely absent from the practice field per Matt Barrows.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday told reporters wide receiver Deebo Samuel would be a non-participant in practice, but he wasn’t completely absent from the field. Matt Barrows of the Athletic noted that Samuel was in a jersey and working on a side field during Wednesday’s session.

That’s not necessarily a sign that Samuel will play vs. Detroit, but it’s more positive than if he was completely inactive. Combining this with Shanahan saying that Samuel is feeling better after hurting his shoulder in Saturday’s divisional playoff game paints a far more positive picture than the one we saw Saturday of Samuel on the sideline in street clothes.

Thursday and Friday will give us better indicators of Samuel’s progress. For now though work on a side field is a plus for San Francisco and their star WR’s availability for the NFC championship.

49ers injury update: WR Deebo Samuel feeling better, won’t practice to begin week

Deebo Samuel is feeling better, but he still isn’t practicing Wednesday.

The 49ers had good and bad news on injured wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday in a press conference before practice told reporters Samuel is feeling better, but the do-everything WR still isn’t in line to practice to begin the week leading up to the NFC championship game.

Samuel hurt his shoulder early in the 49ers’ divisional playoff win over the Packers. He avoided a fracture like the one he sustained in Week 6 against the Browns, but there’s still a question mark over his availability for Sunday’s NFC title game vs. the Lions.

Shanahan said there are no additional absences for San Francisco on Wednesday.

Any progress is a plus for Samuel at this point, but it seems unlikely we’ll have certainty on his status until kickoff.

The 49ers and Lions kickoff Sunday at 3:30pm Pacific Time from Levi’s Stadium.

Report: WR Deebo Samuel has 50-50 chance to play in NFC championship

Deebo Samuel has a 50-50 shot to play against the Lions in the NFC championship game.

One of the biggest question marks for the 49ers heading into the NFC championship game against the Detroit Lions will be whether WR Deebo Samuel can suit up to play.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday, Samuel has a 50-50 chance to play after injuring his shoulder in the divisional round vs. the Packers.

It’s unclear exactly what the injury is. Earlier this season in Week 6 a hairline fracture to the shoulder forced Samuel to miss all of that game and the next two before returning after the bye week.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday will speak with reporters and could have a more definitive update on the exact ailment and timeline Samuel and the 49ers are looking at.

Commanders address multiple needs in new 7-round mock draft

The Commanders address multiple needs in a new seven-round mock draft.

New Washington general manager Adam Peters has a chance to remake the Commanders with an estimated $80 million in cap space and nine picks in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft.

Washington has plenty of needs heading into the offseason, and Peters could turn the Commanders’ nine picks into more before the draft is complete. Finding a franchise quarterback should be the goal for this offseason. Picking No. 2 overall gives Washington a unique opportunity to begin a regime with a new GM, head coach, and quarterback.

Our friend, Curt Popejoy of Draft Wire, recently completed a seven-round mock draft for the Commanders. He addressed multiple positions throughout, beginning with the quarterback.

Let’s examine Draft Wire’s mock beginning with at No. 2 overall.

The good and bad from the 49ers late comeback win vs. Packers in playoffs

Looking at all the good and bad from the 49ers’ rainy comeback win over the Packers in the divisional round of the playoffs.

With a little over six minutes remaining in the divisional round of the playoffs, it looked like the San Francisco 49ers‘ season was heading toward an abrupt and disappointing end. However, a missed 41-yard field goal from Green Bay Packers kicker Anders Carlson opened the door for the 49ers.

Following a flat performance for the first three and a half quarters, Brock Purdy woke up when it mattered most, The 49ers sophomore passer led his team down the field for a go-ahead touchdown. With just over a minute remaining, Christian McCaffrey punched in his second touchdown of the game to give the 49ers a three-point lead.

While the Packers had one last chance to move the ball into field goal range, 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw came to the rescue with a game-ending interception of Jordan Love.

Although it wasn’t easy, the 49ers punched their ticket to the NFC championship game with a roller coaster 24-21 victory over the Packers. Here’s a look at some of the good and bad from San Francisco’s performance in the divisional round of the playoffs.

49ers injury update: Deebo Samuel shoulder only issue from playoff win over Packers

Only one injury update from Kyle Shanahan after the #49ers win over the Packers:

The 49ers only had one injury in their playoff win over the Packers, but it was a big one. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered a shoulder injury early in the contest and had to exit.

He was initially evaluated for a concussion and was cleared, but he continued dealing with a shoulder ailment that kept him out of the game. Then he went to the locker room before the half and came out without his pads on.

San Francisco’s offense struggled while Samuel was out for three weeks earlier in the season, and they had a hard time adjusting without him Saturday.

Shanahan will likely have an update next time he talks to reporters.

Deebo Samuel cleared to return after being evaluated for head injury

The star wide receiver was initially listed as questionable before being cleared to return against the Packers.

Trailing by three points to the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round of the playoffs, Deebo Samuel gave Kyle Shanahan’s offense a spark on the San Francisco 49ers’ first offensive possession of the game.

Samuel broke off a 15-yard gain after catching a short pass from Brock Purdy. After tacking on another catch, Sameul exited the game after appearing to suffer an injury. Samuel quickly entered the blue medical tent on the sideline.

After being evaluated for a head injury, Samuel was initially listed as questionable to return against the Packers but was quickly cleared to return to the game.
