2023 Prospects: Dee Crayton’s Recruiting Profile

Dee Crayton has Auburn in his final five schools.

Prior to national signing day, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rate them, as well as what their role could be for Bryan Harsin.

Next up in our series is four-star linebacker [autotag]Dee Crayton[/autotag]. Auburn was included in his recently announced top five schools, they will face fierce competition for him.

He was an extremely productive player for Denmark Highs School last season, making 91 tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks as a junior.

The Tigers will have a chance to impress him in person on June 10, when he is set to take an official visit to the Plains. He plans to officially visit each of his finalists and Auburn will need to make the most of the visit as the coaching staff looks to fill out the 2023 recruiting class. Auburn needs to add multiple linebackers in this class and Crayton would be a solid addition.

Four-star linebacker has Auburn in final five schools

Auburn is in a great place with four-star Dee Crayton.

Auburn is one step closer to adding a talented defensive player to their recruiting class.

Four-star linebacker [autotag]Dee Crayton[/autotag] included the Tigers in his top five schools. Auburn will be battling Missouri, Clemson, Penn State, and UCF for the Alpharetta, Georgia product.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder made 91 tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks as a junior for Denmark High School. He is one of 23 different linebackers that Auburn has extended an offer to.

He is ranked as the No. 256 overall player and No. 21 linebacker in the 247Sports composite recruiting ranking. He is the No. 25 player from Georgia.

Auburn likely needs to add multiple linebackers in the 2023 recruiting class. Of the Tigers’ nine scholarship linebackers, six are upperclassmen.  Crayton would be a solid addition to a class that currently consists of four-star safety Terrance Love and four-star offensive lineman Bradyn Joiner.

Clemson lands in Top Five for linebacker target

2023 linebacker target linked to Clemson

Clemson continues to land in final groups for priority target recruits as four-star linebacker Dee Crayton announced on Twitter Saturday that the Tigers are in his top five choices.

According to 247Sports composite rankings, the Denmark high school (Alpharetta, GA.) product is the No.21 ranked linebacker in the 2023 class as well as the No.256 national prospect.

If Crayton were to join Clemson, he’d find himself competing for playing time in one of the top defenses, if not the best defense in college football.

He has not announced a commitment date yet, but Crayton will be choosing between Clemson, Auburn, Penn State, Missouri and UCF.

Clemson in Final 5 for priority linebacker target

A priority linebacker target for Clemson in the 2023 recruiting class dropped his final five schools on Saturday afternoon via social media.

Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star Dee Crayton is down to Clemson, Auburn, Mizzou, Penn State and UCF.

Crayton plans on officially visiting Clemson on the weekend of June 3-5 and then the remaining schools that exact order in the weeks that follow.

Definitely, something that comes right to mind is my relationship with Coach Wes (Goodwin),” Crayton told The Clemson Insider when asked why he included Clemson among his top schools. “He actually came to my practice (Monday). He’s always just recruiting me hard. We talk every day — he makes sure he calls me and we chat it up whether it’s for five minutes or 15 — we’re always just talking.

“Just being able to see myself in the defense and my head coach (Mike Palmieri) actually coached Trenton (Simpson),” Crayton continued. “He’s kind of aligned with Clemson in coaching linebackers. (Coach Goodwin) is coaching Trenton now, so that’s pretty cool seeing him develop and that possibly being me.”

Crayton also mentioned the atmosphere of the fans and the stability of the coaching staff, as well as the ability to play early. When the class of 2023 arrives on campus, Clemson’s current crop of linebackers would either have one or two years of remaining eligibility, if they opt for the NFL.

He views that as a good opportunity, which would potentially allow for Crayton to make plays in Goodwin’s attack-style defensive scheme, which has its linebackers focus on getting after the quarterback, playing in space and roaming sideline-to-sideline.

A prized four-star linebacker recruit for Clemson in the class of 2023 talked with The Clemson Insider Monday and revealed why Clemson is one of the favorites in his recruitment, as well as where things currently stand in his process.

Dee Crayton gave a long-winded answer on why Clemson will be one of the team’s on his formal list of favorites. The Denmark High School (Alpharetta, Ga.) product is set to announce his final five schools at noon this Saturday.

“Definitely something that comes right to mind is my relationship with Coach Wes (Goodwin),” Crayton said.

For Crayton, it’s been pretty cool to see how Clemson’s defensive coordinator has picked up right where Brent Venables left off as his lead recruiter.

“It’s definitely developed a lot,” he said regarding his relationship with Goodwin. “From the start, as soon as he came in, he started recruiting me just like Coach Venables was — even harder actually. He’s been recruiting me hard and was keeping in touch with me before the offer and still after. That’s definitely a big deal for me, a school like that showing that amount of love.”

Crayton will have an opportunity to continue to feel that love when he officially visits Clemson the weekend of June 3-5. He’s hoping that his upcoming official visit confirms the way he feels about the school.

“I’ve seen a lot — even on my unofficial, they showed us a lot,” Crayton said. “I mean, if they have any more that they could possibly show us, then I’m all down for it. It was a lot that they showed us already, so I’m excited to see what more they have to offer. I already know it’s gonna be a great feeling every time I get on campus.”

Crayton will be knocking out his remaining official visits in the weeks that follow. After Clemson, he’s planning on visiting Auburn, Mizzou, Penn State and UCF, in that exact order.

With those dates in mind, Crayton is planning on having a decision made prior to his senior season.

“Definitely a school that I can contribute at pretty early on,” Crayton said when asked what are some of the important factors that he’s looking for in a school at the next level. “A school that can fit my style of play on defense. Just a winning culture — not even just a winning record, but a culture that provides for the players, is player-centric, wants to win and has a fanbase that shows a lot of love, even if the team isn’t at their best point; they’re sticking by the team and having positive vibes.”

Crayton also mentioned academics being important in his decision. He understands that football doesn’t last forever, so getting a good education at an institution, where he can also pursue his major is also vital.

As his recruitment process dwindles down and as he weighs his options going forward, it’s not only Clemson’s coaching staff that’s making a hard push for Crayton.

David Ojiegbe, who verbally pledged to the Tigers at the end of last month, is in an all-out pursuit of Crayton. He played alongside the Washington, D.C. native in the Under Armour Next game when the two were in eighth grade. They’ve remained close friends and were on an unofficial visit to Clemson together in March.

It’s no longer a secret that Ojiegbe and Clemson are hard after Crayton, who remains a top priority for Clemson in the 2023 recruiting class.

The latest on newly offered linebacker

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with a newly-offered linebacker, who was also on campus for Clemson’s Junior Day on March 5. It was Denmark’s (Alpharetta, Ga.) Dee Crayton’s first time being back in Tiger Town since Clemson pulled the trigger on an offer.

“It was phenomenal,” Crayton said. “It was definitely more eye-opening, showing me more since it wasn’t a game day. It was just good seeing way more aspects of the facilities and the campus. So, it was good to see all that.”

One of Crayton’s favorite parts of his visit was getting to see the dorms. He said that it was crazy to see how nice the dorms were for the players. That was one thing that Clemson did that the other school on Crayton’s list hasn’t shown him yet since he’s been on visits.

What did he hear from Wesley Goodwin while he was on campus?

“Just how I would be a great fit for the defense and how he could scheme around my athleticism,” Crayton said, “and being versatile playing multiple players around the linebackers spot. And just how I would be a key piece. I could come in, (their linebackers) will be either leaving or have one more season. They’re gonna lose a few at the linebacker position, so there’s a good chance to compete for a spot early. He was just saying that a good amount of times.”

Goodwin has come by Denmark High School on numerous occasions, but earlier this month was really the first chance for Crayton to spend some one-on-one time with Clemson’s co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

“He’s definitely a very determined coach and he’s good schematically,” he said. “Seeing all the different types of formations he had drawn up, it was actually surprising to me the simple formation that he just expanded just to trick the offense. He’s very smart when it comes to play calling. I love to see that. He has a great football IQ, which I also think I have. That would be very compatible, so I like to see that.

“It was good hanging out with coach. He’s a great guy. To have that much experience in the game, he’s real down to earth and he’s a dad, so he’s good with kids and stuff. That’s someone to look up to — becoming a young adult — and just going through life.”

Crayton was accompanied by his parents. They all came away impressed with Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and his 2.5-hour speech.

“It was great, very inspiring,” Crayton said. He’s very competitive, which me and my parents like, and his determination to win and put the players in the best positions and just the discipline that it takes to be on the team, which is gonna prepare you for life.

“Me and my parents definitely loved what he had to say. He impresses every time. He never fails us when it comes to his speeches. He’s a great person to listen to and a great person to look up to, especially considering the success he’s had in football and coaching.”

Clemson is set to host a slew of top prospects today for its second junior day of the year, which the Tigers are dubbing their “spring elite day” for recruits in the class of 2023.

Among the headliners expected to be in attendance is Central (Phenix City, Ala.) five-star A.J. Harris, the nation’s No. 2 cornerback and No. 17 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings. The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder has made multiple trips to Tiger Town and is a priority target for the Tigers. Last September, he released a top seven comprised of Clemson, Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Georgia and Ohio State.

Harris will be joined on campus by a host of other talented defensive backs, including Harris’ teammate at Central, cornerback Quintavious Billingsley; Lake Mary (Fla.) four-star cornerback Braedan Marshall; Eagles Landing Christian Academy (McDonough, Ga.) three-star cornerback Colton Hood; Daniel (Central, S.C.) cornerback Misun Kelley; North Oconee (Bogart, Ga.) cornerback Khalil Barnes; Loachapoka (Auburn, Ala.) cornerback Jacorious Hart; Milton (Alpharetta, Ga.) three-star safety Robert Billings; and A.C. Reynolds (Asheville, N.C.) safety Dashawn Stone.

Another headliner slated to be on hand for the spring elite day is Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) four-star offensive lineman Monroe Freeling.

It will mark his first visit to Clemson since attending the Florida State game in late October of last year. He was also on campus last June to participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp, after which he picked up an offer from the Tigers.

Freeling said during a recent interview with The Clemson Insider that the Tigers “stand highly” in his recruitment heading into today’s visit.

“I really loved the culture there when I first went up and I’ve been maintaining a good relationship with (offensive line) coach (Thomas) Austin,” he said, “and I’m just looking forward to growing it some more when I get out there.”

Along with Clemson, which is heavily pursuing Freeling, he named Miami and Notre Dame as a couple of schools that have been recruiting him the hardest.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Freeling is the No. 1 prospect in South Carolina, No. 9 offensive tackle nationally and No. 82 overall prospect for the 2023 class.

South Point (Belmont, N.C.) four-star offensive lineman Sullivan Absher will also return to Clemson after picking up an offer from the Tigers in February – an offer that he told TCI he “had been working for, for a very long time.”  He previously traveled to Clemson twice during this past season – first for the Boston College game in October and then for the Wake Forest game in November.

Another big-time offensive lineman will be on campus today as well in Eagles Landing Christian Academy (McDonough, Ga.) four-star tackle Zechariah Owens.

As for the defensive linemen expected to be among the junior day visitors, there are several prominent prospects, namely St. John’s (Washington, D.C.) four-star David Ojiegbe, Hewitt-Trussville (Trussville, Ala.) four-star Hunter Osborne, Rome (Ga.) four-star Stephiylan Green, Upson-Lee (Thomaston, Ga.) four-star T.J. Searcy and Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star A.J. Hoffler.

A bunch of other standout class of 2023 prospects are on the expected guest list for the spring elite day, as well, including Hickory Ridge (Harrisburg, N.C.) four-star wide receiver Christian Hamilton; Bridgeland (Cypress, Texas) four-star tight end Reid Mikeska; Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star linebacker Dee Crayton; Fairfax (Va.) four-star linebacker Tony Rojas; F.W. Buchholz (Gainesville, Fla.) three-star wide receiver Creed Whittemore; Maiden (N.C.) High School three-star wide receiver Chris Culliver; Phoebus (Hampton, Va.) three-star athlete Jordan Bass; Sumter (S.C.) athlete Zyeir Gamble; and Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) running back Jarvis Green.

A few notable 2024 prospects are planning to visit Clemson today, too, in Carrollwood Day (Tampa, Fla.) four-star defensive back Tavoy Feagin, Weddington (Matthews, N.C.) tight end Brooks Mauk and Towers (Decatur, Ga.) wide receiver/cornerback Keshawn Weathers.

Newly offered 4-star LB: ‘Clemson’s always had a special place in my heart’

Dee Crayton has been talking with Wes Goodwin for a good while now.

On Wednesday evening, Clemson co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach texted the four-star linebacker out of Denmark High School (Alpharetta, Ga.) and told him to call him. Goodwin had good news, he was offering Crayton — a 6-2, 215-pound junior — a scholarship.

“I was pretty excited,” he told The Clemson Insider in an exclusive interview Wednesday. “My parents were right there. I was in my room and I went and told my parents. They were pretty excited. They’ve been liking Clemson for a while now.”

Crayton’s head coach at Denmark, Mike Palmieri, coached Trenton Simpson at Mallard Creek. That connection to Clemson helped, especially after Brent Venables departed for the head coaching position at Oklahoma. While he was still with the Tigers, Venables served as Crayton’s lead recruiter and had discussions about a potential offer.

“It’s good because when (Coach Venables) left, I had a few connections, but it wasn’t as close,” Crayton said. “But, they kept recruiting me hard, which I really appreciated. They just got other coaches to stay on top of me with my recruiting and they came and visited my school multiple times. They weren’t giving up on recruiting me, so that was a big part of it.”

Goodwin was able to pick up where Venables left off.

“It’s been a pretty good relationship, we talk almost every day,” Crayton said. “He goes out of his way to talk to me and I really appreciate that because some coaches just offer you and they don’t talk to you. But, before Coach Goodwin offered me, he built a really solid relationship with me. It’s been a good couple of months since he first got the job and he’s been recruiting me and talking to me. I really appreciate that. It’s only gonna get stronger from here.”

Goodwin has made previous stops at Denmark High School and reinforced just how much of a priority Crayton is to Clemson.

Now that he officially has the offer in hand, Crayton will have the opportunity to return to campus and see Goodwin for either Clemson’s Junior Day on March 5 or a spring practice at a later date.

Clemson certainly has helped itself with Crayton following Wednesday’s offer.

“They definitely are a top school,” Crayton said. “They were a top school before they offered me because of the way they were recruiting me. I would say they are probably a top-2 school recruiting me. Even though they didn’t offer me before, like they just were recruiting me, sending me mail every day and sending me a whole bunch of graphics. The love that Clemson shows, I always feel that type of love.

What does it mean for Crayton to finally have that offer from the Tigers?

“Man, it’s huge,” he said. “The first camp I went to as a kid, not as a recruit, I remember my parents taking me there and staying overnight in the dorms. I just felt the love even then and I was too young to be recruited. It’s an amazing place, the people, the fans and coaches and all that, just the environment and atmosphere of Clemson…Clemson’s always had a special place in my heart.”

A four-star prospect from the Peach State reported an offer from Clemson on Wednesday.

As Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) 2023 linebacker Dee Crayton was on his way to school’s playoff basketball game, he received an offer from the Tigers.
Crayton (6-2, 215) is ranked as the No. 12 linebacker and No. 17 overall prospect in the state of Georgia for the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite. Rivals ranks Crayton as the No. 9 outside linebacker and No. 14 prospect in the state for the 2023 class.
Back in September, Crayton was told by now-former defensive coordinator Brent Venables that an offer would be on the way soon.

“Clemson’s a top-tier school in the whole country,” Crayton said then. “So, I really respect that and I’m just gonna keep working and put it in God’s hands. I know that it’s not gonna come easy and I just have to keep producing on the field, trying to win games, and ultimately, that’s gonna get me to that offer soon.”

After Venables departed for Oklahoma, it didn’t take long for Clemson’s new defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, Wes Goodwin, to get in contact with Crayton. He stopped by his school during the live period in January and offered him nearly a month later.

Latest on Clemson’s 2023 linebacker targets

The Clemson Insider wanted to release some intel we’ve picked up regarding Clemson’s linebacker recruiting. Well, as far as the 2023 recruiting class is concerned.

We can tell you that Clemson’s staff has kept in contact with a range of prospects in the wake of Brent Venables’ departure to Oklahoma.

Clemson’s former defensive coordinator spearheaded the recruitment of three class of 2023 linebackers — Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star Dee Crayton, North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.) four-star Grant Godfrey and Many (La.) four-star Tackett Curtis.

All three players are considered top-200 prospects and rank as No. 12, No. 16 and No. 6 linebackers, respectively, in the 2023 recruiting class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

It’s worth mentioning that Curtis is the lone linebacker of the aforementioned trio, who currently holds an offer from Clemson. Though, the Tigers continue to recruit all three just the same.

Crayton told us that he’s kept in close contact with Clemson. Just last week, co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Mickey Conn came by his school and informed Crayton’s head coach that they’ll be heavily recruiting him and are excited for him as a prospect.

“Clemson’s a top-tier school in the whole country,” Crayton said. “So, I really respect that and I’m just gonna keep working and put it in God’s hands. I know that it’s not gonna come easy and I just have to keep producing on the field, trying to win games, and ultimately, that’s gonna get me to that offer soon.”

As for Godfrey, Lemanski Hall has kept in contact. Clemson’s defensive end coach was just checking up on him and how his basketball season was going, he said.

Godfrey’s older brother, R.J., of course, is a class of 2022 signee himself. The 6-foot-7 forward put pen to paper with Brad Brownell’s team in November. It would be a dream come true for the brothers to play with each other at the next level.

And as for Curtis, his head coach and uncle, Jess, told us that he believes Clemson’s co-defensive coordinator/linebacker coach, Wes Goodwin, has been in contact with his nephew, Tackett, who is one of the top linebacker recruits in the country.

There are a lot of pieces to be picked up, especially from the recruiting end of things, now that Venables is in Norman. That said, Clemson’s staff, particularly Goodwin, has worked diligently to pick up those pieces and continue to recruit prospects that have a clear interest in the program.

“Recruiting takes time, a lot of investment,” Goodwin said. “Nobody’s gonna outwork me is kind of the mentality that I have. So, just continuing to develop those relationships and pouring into young people.”
