LSU basketball signee decommits in the wake of Will Wade firing

Devin Ree become the first LSU player to back off their pledge after Wade’s firing.

Attrition in recruiting is sure to follow any coaching change, an the ongoing situation at LSU is no different. After the program fired basketball coach Will Wade on Saturday, it lost the pledge of one of its three commitments in the 2022 recruiting class.

Four-star forward Devin Ree, who signed his letter of intent in November, announced late Sunday night that he has decommitted from the Tigers in the wake of the uncertainty surrounding the coaching situation. Wade was fired in the wake of a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA that cited him with multiple Level I violations, alongside associate head coach Bill Armstrong.

Interim coach Kevin Nickelberry will coach LSU in the NCAA Tournament, where it faces Iowa State in the first round on Friday night in Milwaukee.

Ree is the No. 82 recruit in the country, per the 247Sports Composite. The Terry (Mississippi) prospect averaged 23.2 points and 12 rebounds during his junior season in 2020, and he’s been pledged to LSU since December 2020.

With Ree out, LSU is left with one signee and one hard commit in the 2020 class. Five-star power forward Julian Phillips — the No. 12 player in the country — has signed his NLI, while five-star center Yohan Traore is unsigned but remains committed.

Still, with the news, both (as well as lone 2023 commit Marvel Allen) could look to head elsewhere. The Tigers could also be in danger of losing several players to the transfer portal.

It’s a lot for fans to wrap their heads around as this team looks to make a run in March Madness this week with an interim coach at the helm.

Recently offered LSU cornerback target decommits from Georgia

The Tigers offered Kayin Lee on Wednesday, and he backed off his pledge to Georgia on Tuesday.

Kayin Lee, a four-star cornerback and a top-50 recruit in the nation, announced his decommitment from Georgia on Tuesday. The 5-foot-11-inch, 175-pound junior from Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood, Georgia,  received an offer from new Tigers coach Brian Kelly on Feb. 16.

As a junior at Cedar Grove, Lee picked off seven passes, two of which came in the Georgia AAA state title game. He also earned MaxPreps Junior All-American second-team honors.

In his sophomore season, Lee earned Region 5-AAA Defensive Player of the Year, after totaling 27 tackles and three interceptions in eight games, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

He’s the No. 144 player in the country and No. 17 cornerback, per the 247Sports composite.

Lee had been pledged to Georgia since September shortly after taking an unofficial visit to Athens. His decommitment came just six days after receiving an offer from the Tigers, which seems to indicate they will have a chance to land him. He has also received recent offers from Nebraska and Texas.

As Brian Kelly tries to build LSU back into a powerhouse, it would be a powerful statement to steal a top-50 recruit out of Kirby Smart’s backyard.

Former LSU commit Decoldest Crawford announces top four schools

Days after he decommitted from LSU, Crawford announced his top four schools on Friday.

Whether it be current players entering the NCAA transfer portal or verbal commits choosing to open their recruitment, attrition is bound to happen after head coaching changes.

LSU has experienced quite a bit of both over the last few weeks. One of the most recent is three-star wide receiver Decoldest Crawford from the 2022 recruiting class. Days after decommitting from LSU, Crawford announced the top four schools in his recruitment.

Auburn, Nebraska, Texas and Florida were included. There doesn’t look to be a chance that Crawford could re-join the 2022 class under new head coach Brian Kelly.

Crawford is rated the No. 17 overall prospect in the state of Louisiana and the No. 61 wide receiver in the 2022 class, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

The Tigers currently hold the No. 24 class in the country for the 2022 cycle with less than a week until the early signing period. Kelly has a steep hill to climb in order to close out the cycle on a high note.

Four-star WR Armani Winfield decommits from Texas

Texas’ 2022 recruiting class takes another hit.

While the Longhorns added to their lead over Kansas State in the fourth quarter, four-star wide receiver Armani Winfield announced via Twitter he is backing off his Texas commitment.

The Lewisville High School product became the first commitment of the Steve Sarkisian era when he committed to the Horns during the national championship in Jan.

Winfield is ranked as the No. 25 wide receiver in the country and No. 32 overall prospect in the state of Texas for the 2022 cycle, according to 247Sports composite.

This marks the second major loss from Texas’ 2022 recruiting class in the past week. Four-star running back Jamarion Miller flipped from Texas to Alabama on Thursday.

The loss of Winfield leaves Brenen Thompson as the lone wide receiver committed in the 2022 class. With the lack of much receiving threat outside of Xavier Worthy, Texas needs all the bodies they can get.

Texas still in the lead for five-star RB Rueben Owens following decommitment

Shortly after Owens’ decommitment, his father caught up with 247Sports. He said UT was still leading, but wants to go through the process.

News of Rueben Owens’ decommitment came with a bit of shock on Thursday morning. The five-star running back was just in Austin, being the main recruiter for some of the top 2023 prospects in the country.

Nonetheless, expecting a sophomore in high school, who just began taking on-campus visits, to remain committed is unrealistic.

The recruiting process is brand new for both the 2022 and 2023 cycle, thanks to the COVID-19 dead period. June 1 was the first time they could travel and take any kind of visits — interacting with coaches, other recruits, and getting a feel for campuses.

Owens announced his decision on Twitter, thanking the coaching staff, fanbase, and even the media. He cited an early decision as part of the reason for the decommitment and “there is a lot to carefully evaluate.”

Shortly after, Owens’ father caught up with Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports. He confirmed Texas was still the leader, but wants to go through the process the correct way.

“We’re just going to open it up and make sure we’re making the right choice for him and making sure he’s making the right choice,” the elder Owens said.

Before the original commitment in February, Oklahoma was thought to be the major player for Owens. Seeing a Texas commitment came as a bit of a shock at the time.

Before making it to Austin, recent trips to Alabama and LSU saw the five-star checking out the elite SEC schools. Being the No. 2 running back in the 2023 class, there should be plenty of other big-name programs coming after the Black Unicorn.

Former Texas target Tunmise Adeleye decommits from Ohio State

Texas could be back in play for DE Tunmise Adeleye after his decommitment from Ohio State. He is a four-star prospect in the 2021 class.

Texas could be back in play for defensive end Tunmise Adeleye after his decommitment from Ohio State. A four-star prospect in the 2021 class, Adeleye is originally from Katy, Texas. He transferred for his senior season, playing at IMG Academy in Florida.

In his tweet, Adeleye thanked the Buckeyes’ coaching staff for “taking [him] in as one of their own since the day [he] committed.”

“This experience has been nothing but a good one and I have nothing but love for Coach Johnson on my end,” said Adeleye.

While he never gave a reason for decommitting from Ohio State, it may be because of the options the Buckeyes has in the 2021 class. Defensive end Jack Sawyer, the No. 3 player in the country, is currently committed to Ohio State.

To add on, the No. 2 player in the country, J.T. Tuimoloau, is 92% to Ohio State on 247Sports crystal ball. There would simply be too many skilled players in a single recruiting class for Adeleye to compete against.

Now, Texas can try to rebuild a relationship with a recruit who has publicly dissed them in the past. Adeleye was asked on Instagram why he did not commit to Texas.

“Cause in the past 5 years they’ve only sent 15% of their 4 and 5 star recruits to the NFL draft.”

According to 247Sports in-state rivals Texas A&M is seen as a favorite for the four-star. Nick Saban and Alabama could also be on the hunt for another edge rusher.

Texas’ director of recruiting Bryan Carrington had something to say about Adeleye’s decommitment.

It will be a long shot for the Longhorns to go after the soon to be five-star. However, Texas is in need of another staple recruit to sure up their 2021 class. Adeleye could be just that.
