Dishonored 2’s failure is why Bethesda wanted Deathloop

Bethesda was unhappy with Dishonored 2’s commercial failure and decided Arkane needed to make Deathloop instead of another sequel

Bethesda was unhappy with Dishonored 2’s commercial failure – in terms of making the stealth game popular with broader audiences, at least – and decided Arkane needed to make Deathloop instead of another sequel. Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio told Rock, Paper, Shotgun that Bethesda wanted the Arkane team to experiment and learn with a smaller project, and that’s how Deathloop was born.

“And then [Deathloop] became a big thing, over the years,” Colantonio said. “That was the funny thing: ‘Nah, we don’t wanna do Dishonored 3, but if you can pitch us a small game, something that maybe has multiplayer so we can learn multiplayer, something that maybe has microtransactions, maybe something with a lot of recycling, like a roguelike.’”

The popularity of roguelikes at the time meant that particular feature request became a permanent fixture. The project grew to the point where Colantonio said it would’ve cost just as much to make Dishonored 3, but Bethesda believed in its potential. The team thought multiplayer component, revamped layouts after Colt dies, different enemies, and basically everything else that makes Deathloop unique among roguelikes gave it a strong chance of success.

While he left Bethesda to make Weird West and didn’t say whether Deathloop lived up to the company’s expectations, it made its way to our list of the best games in 2021. Arkane Lyon also added a bit of Dishonored to Deathloop after the PS5 game launched, though. The team said both games take place in the same universe.

Deathloop will seemingly release on Xbox soon

New evidence suggests that Deathloop’s PlayStation exclusivity might end in the near future.

After being a PS5 console exclusive for the past year, it seems Deathloop might finally head to Xbox platforms.

Over on Reddit, user Immediate_Exercise27 shared a screencap of what appears to be an advertisement for Deathloop on the Xbox Live storefront (thanks, VG247). Selecting the ad results in a blank page, so if it’s real — which hasn’t been verified — it’s not up yet.

Regardless of whether this find is genuine, it’s probably only a matter of time before Deathloop ends up on Xbox Series X|S. The timed console exclusivity on PS5 deal between Sony and Arkane Studios came after Microsoft acquired Bethesda.

Deathloop appears on the Store from XboxSeriesX

There’s no official word from Arkane Studios, Bethesda, or Microsoft about this, so take all of it with a pinch of salt. Regardless of how inevitable it might seem. Deathloop has also been available on PC for the past year, so getting added to Xbox Game Pass seems like a no-brainer.

While not the fan-favorite Arkane Studios title, Deathloop won over critics at launch last September — garnering an impressive 88 Metacritic score. Since then, there have been substantial updates, including a photo mode, various bug fixes, and much more. Anyone that delves in at this point will be playing an even better game than what was there last year.

Deathloop finally gets a photo mode

Additional accessibility options are part of the new patch as well.

It’s been more than eight months since Deathloop came out, and Arkane Studios is still tweaking the mind-bending shooter.

On Thursday, Game Update 3 for Deathloop added the long-requested photo mode. Producer Jeremy Leulier believes fans should have a ball with the photo mode, even if adding one was tough.

“One of our biggest challenges was to adapt photo mode for a first-person shooter where your character isn’t displayed apart from the hands and weapons,” Leulier said via the PlayStation Blog. “We wanted to offer the best possible experience for this mode and took the time to playtest it thoroughly and even asked for insight from players who are experts in using different photo modes in games. We took so much pleasure testing photo mode that we added a lot of relevant options for the player to make it even more fun and funnier to use.”

There’s also a trailer for Deathloop‘s photo mode, which you can check out below.

Game Update 3 also adds more than 30 accessibility features to Deathloop. We’re talking everything from minor UI settings to straight-up gameplay speed adjustments. It’s all available via a new “accessibility” tab in the options menu.

If you love Arkane’s games, it’s worth scooping up Prey off Epic’s storefront for free. Sadly, the studio delayed its next title, Redfall, until 2023.

‘Metal Gear Solid’ creator Hideo Kojima wants to play ‘Deathloop’ even if it makes him sick

Motion sickness can be a total pain.

Deathloop is the talk of the town right now, and even Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding fame couldn’t help jumping on the hype train. Though he’s a little concerned that it’ll, well, make him motion sick.

Deathloop, the latest shooter from developer Arkane Studios, is all about high-flying antics and time travel. It’s the kind of game that’ll surely test your noggin as well as any spatial awareness issues you might have. Kojima, who’s known for mind-bending games himself, is eager to give Deathloop a try. The trouble is, he’s not sure he can handle its first-person perspective.

Deathloop. It’s a time loop game with an interesting system,” Kojima said on Twitter. “I want to play it, but it’s an FPS, and I’ll probably get 3D-sick. Hmmm.”

He went on to claim that beyond FPS games, loads of activities make him sick: swings, theme park rides, and even riding at the front of buses!

Check out Kojima’s comments for yourself below.

Many of Kojima’s peers and fans shared similar sentiments or tips on how to not hurl while playing Deathloop. Or they chimed in with a cheeky joke

Oh, and the official Deathloop Twitter account had some advice for Kojima too.

Hopefully Kojima can find a way to play, without getting nauseous, of course!
