Sixers, NBA Twitter reacts to De’Anthony Melton acquisition from Grizzlies

Philadelphia 76ers and NBA Twitter reacts to the team acquiring De’Anthony Melton from the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Philadelphia 76ers made a draft-night trade that a lot of people were expecting on Thursday when they sent the No. 23 pick as well as Danny Green to the Memphis Grizzlies in order to acquire De’Anthony Melton. The Sixers needed a legitimate two-way player and that is exactly what Melton can bring to the table.

Melton is a legitimate two-way player who can knock down a 3-ball on one end and bother the hell out of his opponents on the other. He averaged 10.8 points and 4.5 rebounds for the Grizzlies in the 2021-22 season and he shot 37.4% from deep as he was a big piece off their bench. That is the same role he will fill in Philadelphia.

As for a guy like Green, his $10 million salary for the 2022-23 season has been guaranteed in this deal. It is good on his end after he tore his ACL in the Game 6 loss to the Miami Heat. He is a well-respected veteran who deserves his money at this stage of his career.

With that being said, let’s take a look at Sixers and NBA Twitter to see their best reactions to this trade:

Sixers trade No. 23 pick, Danny Green to Grizzlies for De’Anthony Melton

The Philadelphia 76ers are sending Danny Green and the No. 23 pick to the Memphis Grizzlies for De’Anthony Melton.

The Philadelphia 76ers are in the middle of trying to build a contender in the Eastern Conference and in order to do that, they need win-now players as they move forward with a title-ready roster led by Joel Embiid and James Harden. At this point, that is more important than bringing in another young player who needs development at this level.

Therefore, Daryl Morey and co. swung a deal that sent the No. 23 pick in Thursday’s draft to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for De’Anthony Melton. He is a 4-year veteran who averaged 10.8 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 37.4% from deep in his fourth season in the league. He was a big piece off the bench for Memphis in helping them make the playoffs.

On top of that, the Sixers are also sending veteran Danny Green to the Grizzlies to match the salary. Green suffered an ACL tear in the Game 6 elimination loss to the Miami Heat and he is expected to miss a majority of the 2022-23 season.

Melton is a guy who helps the Sixers right now and he is a tough guy. He fills some needs for Philadelphia as a ball-handler, a shooter, and somebody who can provide some toughness that he picked up along the way in his career. He is also a terrific defender out on the perimeter as he is a legitimate two-way player that can help right now.

Mock trade has Sixers sending Matisse Thybulle to Grizzlies in a deal

A new mock trade has the Philadelphia 76ers sending Matisse Thybulle to the Memphis Grizzlies in a deal.

It’s mock trade season as the offseason is fully here for the Philadelphia 76ers. Now is the time to analyze some mock trades that are out there and discuss whether it fits the Sixers or not as they move forward with their plans to build a roster that can win around Joel Embiid and James Harden.

The Sixers are a team that is in need of some quality depth off their bench. They need somebody who can provide something of a “dawg” mentality as they move forward with their title plans and they need somebody to be a leader off the bench.

A mock trade proposed by Mike O’Connor of The Rights to Ricky Sanchez has the Sixers sending Matisse Thybulle to the Memphis Grizzlies for a player who can fulfill those requirements.

Who former Rockets are playing for in the 2022 NBA playoffs

James Harden (Philadelphia 76ers) and Chris Paul (Phoenix Suns) are the headliners when it comes to former Rockets in the 2022 NBA playoffs. Here’s our look at the complete team-by-team list.

The Rockets remain in the relatively early stages of a franchise rebuild, with an emphasis on developing younger players. As a result, it shouldn’t be a shock that Houston (20-62) isn’t part of the 2022 NBA playoffs.

Houston has now missed the playoffs for two straight years, immediately after an NBA-best streak of eight consecutive playoff berths. That run came under the leadership former superstar James Harden.

Even now, the Rockets are still represented relatively well in the 2022 postseason by many former players — starting with Harden (Philadelphia 76ers) and former co-star Chris Paul (Phoenix Suns). Scroll on for a look at the full playoff schedule and a team-by-team breakdown featuring all active players who spent time in Houston during their careers.

ESPN’s Zach Lowe reflects on potential Jaylen Brown trades for the Boston Celtics

Trades, of course, require two (or more) teams to agree on the deal, and that isn’t always a breeze.

The Boston Celtics are dominating the NBA media sphere at the moment, and for all the wrong reasons. After dropping yet more winnable games and making seemingly little progress despite some fairly substantial changes to the team’s front office, coaching staff, and rotation depth, analysts are beginning to wonder if trading as high a profile player as All-Star forward Jaylen Brown might actually be on the table.

One such thought experiment was conducted by host of the semi- eponymous ESPN “Lowe Post” podcast Zach Lowe with his guest, the esteemed Jeff Van Gundy. The former head coach and broadcaster debated if there were any potential trade packages out there that would be a solid deal for both sides, and found it was not such an easy task even if one believes such a move to be a wise one.

We, for the record, do not — but let’s look at some of what Lowe and Van Gundy had to say about several proposed trade packages.

Grizzlies season preview: How strong is Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson duo?

With Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson, both only recently 22 years old, the Memphis Grizzlies may have the best duo of young players in the NBA.

With Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson, both only recently 22 years old, the Memphis Grizzlies may have the best duo of young players in the NBA.

Memphis is building well around Morant, who is clearly one of the league’s top rising stars. They still have some weaknesses, like an ability for anyone else beyond Morant to crate their own offense off the bounce. But they have enough depth — and enough tenacity on defense — to at least put up a fight on both sides of the ball.
