Lakers at Suns: Lineups, injury report and broadcast info for Sunday

The Los Angeles Lakers are back on the floor in Phoenix after losing LeBron James for an indefinite period on Saturday.

The Los Angeles Lakers are back on the floor on Sunday after suffering yet another key injury to their team on Saturday night. LeBron James will not play for the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, though he did travel with the team to Phoenix for their game tonight against the Suns.

James left Saturday afternoon’s game against the Atlanta Hawks with a right high ankle sprain. The severity of the injury is still being determined and James is currently out indefinitely. Without James, that puts even more on the remaining Lakers, who have also been without Anthony Davis since the middle of February.

Here’s when you should tune in to see the game:

Suns at Lakers: Prediction, point spread, odds, over-under, betting picks

The Los Angeles Lakers have looked much stronger ever since getting back Dennis Schröder last Friday.

The Los Angeles Lakers look like a much stronger squad ever since the return of starting point guard Dennis Schröder. They’ve won their last two games, both against teams currently in the playoff picture and they’ve displayed spectacular defense. But tonight’s game will be an even tougher test as they welcome the Phoenix Suns to Staples Center. We will give you all the best information you need to make the best wagers on tonight’s game from our friends at BetMGM.

Tonight’s game tips off at 10 p.m. EST and the game will be aired nationally on ESPN.

Advice and prediction

The Lakers defense is still elite, even without Anthony Davis. Ever since the return of Schröder, we’ve been reminded of that as their size and smarts have made things very difficult for teams on a nightly basis.

Tonight’s challenge will be even more difficult as the Suns have two great playmakers in Chris Paul and Devin Booker, as well as a powerful force above the rim in DeAndre Ayton.

Still, with the Lakers only giving up a point and it being effectively a toss-up, I’ve got to go with LeBron and the Lakers in this spot. While they haven’t been great at home, it’s their final home game before the break and it’s also their last game on National TV until the second half of the season begins. With the spotlight on them, I think the Lakers bring the money.

Prediction: Lakers 112, Suns 108

Thunder survive the Chris Paul experience, beat Suns for second win in a row

Chris Paul scored 32 points, but the OKC Thunder defeated the Phoenix Suns and the former Oklahoma City point guard on Wednesday.

After a full season of watching Chris Paul lead the Thunder to victory, Oklahoma City saw his takeover of a game from the other side.

It didn’t matter. OKC overcame Paul’s season-high 32 points to defeat the Phoenix Suns 102-97.

“We course corrected in-game and showed some toughness,” head coach Mark Daigneault said. “I think we continue to learn lessons. We had a five-game trip and we try to evaluate these in totality. I thought this trip was good for us.”

The Thunder were outscored by 15 in the first quarter as they struggled to produce offense. Seven of their first nine shots were from deep, and through six minutes, they only had seven points to show for it. The Suns rattled off 32 point.

The game flipped in the second quarter when Phoenix stalled. The Suns ended the second quarter on a 1-for-15 stretch and the Thunder held them to just 10 points in the frame to take a 45-42 lead into halftime.

That’s when Paul broke out. He had a stretch in the third in which he accounted for 20 straight Suns points, scoring 10 points and assisting three others, before being subbed out. He more or less single-handedly dragged the Suns back over the Thunder as Phoenix took a 64-59 lead when he checked out with 4:12 to go in the third.

He came back in less than three minutes later and didn’t step off the court again. He scored 11 points in a row in the fourth quarter.

The Thunder slowed him down by attacking him harder on the high pick-and-rolls. Lu Dort drew multiple offensive fouls on screens, and the Thunder pulled back ahead.

“Defensively, our mental focus was very good,” center Al Horford said. “We continued to get stops we needed to down the stretch, and not only get stops, but get rebounds.”

While Paul starred for the Suns, the Thunder’s veteran’s return was just as impactful for OKC.

Horford, back with the Thunder after missing six games for the birth of his child, dominated on both sides of the ball. His 21 points and 11 rebounds were both the second-most he’s had in a Thunder uniform, and his three steals and five 3-pointers were season-highs. He was perfect from deep and went 8-for-12 from the field.

On defense, he helped hold Suns center Deandre Ayton to five points on 2-for-7 shooting.

As good as Ayton can be, like his last four games in which he averaged about 22 points and 15 rebounds per contest, he has a tendency to go through entire games where he’s not aggressive and relies on fadeaways out of the post. The Thunder forced him into that tonight, cutting off the spin move he likes using to get to the rim, and Horford was a prime piece of the puzzle that held strong and kept power in front of him.

“He’s a guy that you can’t be second to contact with him,” Daigneault said. “He’s developing ability an ability to duck in and to get on glass and that was a huge emphasis with him.”

As Ayton struggled, Horford had arguably his best game of the season. The two weeks off did him well. He said the Thunder had a support group remain in OKC with him to help him train and condition so he would stay sharp during the hiatus.

The Thunder fell behind 95-91 with 3:29 to play but went on a 7-0 run that culminated in an aggressive drive and layup by rookie Theo Maledon, starting the second game in a row in place of the injured George Hill.

Maledon drove past Paul and attacked Ayton at the hoop coming off a screen and finished off the glass.

After not closing the game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday, Maledon earned the closing spot Wednesday. He finished with 11 points and six boards.

Phoenix only made one field goal over the final five minutes. It was the third game in a row they collapsed down the stretch, and one of the keys was Dort drawing fouls off the screens. He did so three times over the final 5:01 of the game.

“Those were unbelievable plays,” Daigneault said.

Dort explained that his speed helps him get to his spot quicker and draw those types of fouls.

“I can move my feet really fast, the screener’s just gotta be set. If they move, it’s illegal. I’m just really trying to stay in front of the ball, and if it happens, it happens,” he said.

After their slow start from 3, the Thunder finished 16-for-40 from behind the arc. Horford hit five, Dort had four and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made two and finished with 21 points.

The third-year guard was again the key offensive driver late, scoring eight points in the final five minutes and assisting another basket. Daigneault credited Gilgeous-Alexander’s management of the court late.

“When the ball moves and different guys are involved, it builds confidence, it builds chemistry … Chris has it down to and art, he’s an unbelievable game manager and has an unbelievable feel for how to do that. I think that’s a developing skill for Shai,” Daigneault said.

“He’s had a really good balance on this trip where understands how to choose his spots but he also understands how to trust guys.”

It was the Chris Paul experience from the other bench, but the Thunder overcame it. They’re now winners of two in a row and finish the road trip 2-3.

Thunder vs. Suns: Point spread, betting odds, prediction (Jan. 27)

See betting odds for the Phoenix Suns and OKC Thunder game on Wednesday night.

The Oklahoma City Thunder play the Phoenix Suns and if you’re looking to do some last-minute betting research, you’re in luck! We’ll give you the latest point spread, moneyline odds and over-under number, as well as the information you’ll need to make the smartest bet on BetMGM.

The game tips off at 8 p.m. and can be seen on FOX Sports Oklahoma.

The Thunder (7-9) ended their three-game losing streak with a 125-122 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday. That 125 points was the third-most they’ve scored all season, and came without George Hill or Al Horford.

The Suns (8-7) lost two overtime games in a row to the Denver Nuggets. They’ve struggled in crunch time and will be without star Devin Booker, who was injured late in the first game against the Nuggets.

How to watch: Thunder vs. Suns

Advice and prediction

This game will come down to Suns center Deandre Ayton. The box score doesn’t always totally show his impact. He’ll have some games where he has a strong double-double, but doesn’t play aggressive and doesn’t look very good. Then he’ll have other games with more muted stats but have an overall powerful impact.

His last four games have been both — great stats and looks great on the eye-test. The 7-footer will be up against Isaiah Roby. If Ayton can channel his dominant side, he would continue this breakout stretch. If that’s the case, Phoenix wins.

The Suns will be without Devin Booker, though. They took the Nuggets to double-overtime without him but, once foul trouble occurred with other players, fell apart due to depth issues. Oklahoma City’s best bet would be to try to force fouls and make the Suns go to the bench, a unit that hasn’t been very good lately.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will likely be matched against Mikal Bridges, a player Suns fans love similarly to how Thunder fans love Lu Dort, if that gives you any idea of his impact. Ayton’s able to guard bigs and wings out to the perimeter. Plus, the ultra-competitive Chris Paul would surely love to get a win against his former team.

I don’t love how the Thunder match up against Phoenix, and I wouldn’t bet on Oklahoma City, even with Booker’s absence — unless Suns collapse down the stretch like they have several times already this season. They’ve lost a few games due to poor closing minutes. I don’t think the Thunder will cover the spread, but I was very wrong the last two games.

Rockets reaction: Christian Wood excels through ankle sprain, but Suns rise up

Christian Wood had 20 points and 11 rebounds despite suffering an ugly ankle sprain, but it wasn’t enough against Devin Booker and the Suns.

Prized big man Christian Wood somehow stayed in Wednesday’s game for the Rockets, despite suffering an ugly right ankle sprain late in the first half. Unfortunately for Houston, despite Wood’s gritty effort, they weren’t nearly good enough in the minutes without him.

After cutting a 20-point Phoenix lead to seven after the third quarter, the lead ballooned to 15 in the five minutes that Wood sat out early in the fourth. Ultimately, that was too much to overcome against the improving Suns (8-5), who showed why they have the No. 4 record in the West during a 109-103 win (box score) at Toyota Center. The Rockets were +3 in the 34 minutes that Wood played, and -9 in the 14 that he rested.

The Rockets came as close as two points during the game’s final two minutes, but a pair of fouls against DeAndre Ayton and Devin Booker allowed Phoenix to bump the lead back up. Ayton led the Suns with 26 points and 17 rebounds, while Booker scored 24.

Wood had 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots for the Rockets (4-9), who have the second-worst record in the Western Conference and have now lost five of their last six games, overall. Backcourt starters Victor Oladipo and Eric Gordon each scored 22 in the narrow defeat.

The Rockets were again without two usual starters in guard John Wall (left knee soreness) and forward Danuel House Jr. (self-isolation). Both are also expected to miss the upcoming back-to-back on Friday in Detroit and Saturday in Dallas. While Wood returned Wednesday, his availability could depend on how his ankle responds over the next 48 hours. In postgame comments, he noted that he was “in a lot of pain.”

Here’s a sampling of Wednesday’s postgame reaction.

Suns at Rockets: Lineups, injury reports, and broadcast info for Wednesday

The Suns bring a loaded backcourt to town with Chris Paul and Devin Booker, while Houston counters with Victor Oladipo and Eric Gordon.

The Phoenix Suns will bring a loaded backcourt to Houston on Wednesday in the form of Chris Paul and Devin Booker, who were each All-Stars in 2020. Unfortunately for the Rockets, half of their duo of former All-Star guards remains sidelined for the time being.

For a fourth consecutive game, John Wall is listed as out due to left knee soreness. The Rockets will still have Victor Oladipo, who registered 32 points and 9 assists in his Houston debut on Monday, but Wall will be replaced in the starting lineup by Eric Gordon.

Danuel House Jr., who typically starts at small forward, also remains sidelined due to a mandatory self-isolation period. Veteran guard Sterling Brown is questionable with lower right leg soreness.

In the 2020-21 season, Houston’s best All-Star candidate is emerging big man Christian Wood, who is averaging 23.8 points (53.6%) and 10.7 rebounds per game this season. To beat an improving team like the Suns, Wood will likely need to win his matchup against DeAndre Ayton, who anchors the interior defense for Phoenix. Drafted No. 1 overall in 2018, Ayton ranks fifth in the NBA in rebounds at 11.7 per game.

Here’s when you should tune in to see Wednesday’s game, which has a later tipoff time than usual due to the national television broadcast.

  • Date: Wednesday, Jan. 20
  • Time: 8:30 p.m. Central
  • TV Channel: ESPN
  • Live stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

Probable starting lineups

Houston Rockets (4-8)

  • Guard: Victor Oladipo
  • Guard: Eric Gordon
  • Forward: David Nwaba
  • Forward: PJ Tucker
  • Center: Christian Wood

Phoenix Suns (7-5)

  • Guard: Chris Paul
  • Guard: Devin Booker
  • Forward: Cam Johnson
  • Forward: Mikal Bridges
  • Center: DeAndre Ayton

The Rockets enter having lost four of their last five games, including a 125-120 setback in Chicago on Monday. At the moment, Houston has the second-worst record in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Suns also lost on Monday by a four-point margin in Memphis, though they still rank No. 4 overall in the tightly packed West standings.

There may have been some rust involved for Phoenix, since their previous three games were all postponed due to COVID-19 issues. They’ll look to shake that off Wednesday night at Toyota Center, in a game the Rockets need to win as they work to begin turning their season around.

Interesting NBA teams you should add to your League Pass watch list

With the start of the 2020-21 NBA season upon us, there are several teams that look quite a bit different than when we last saw them.

Especially while watching the teams that were good last season, it can be an overwhelming experience to track the year-over-year roster changes for teams that restructured. Of course, most fans are going to pay close attention to the teams that are favored to win the championship.

But as you decide what games to watch if you subscribe to NBA League Pass, you should seriously consider tuning in to these teams that may not have been on your radar last season.

Suns’ Deandre Ayton taking Jalen Smith under his wing during camp

Ayton has spent much of training camp mentoring Suns first-round pick Jalen Smith in the early going.

Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton knew that he would eventually like to mentor a younger teammate when the time was right. The former No. 1 overall pick found that player this season in Suns first-round pick Jalen Smith.

Phoenix selected Smith with the 10th overall pick after a strong sophomore campaign at Maryland. He earned All-American Third Team honors after averaging 15.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks in 31 games played last season.

Ayton has taken Smith under his wing in the early going during training camp. He has relished the opportunity to show Smith the ropes and said it has even made him work harder knowing that somebody is watching and learning from him.

For his part, Smith has impressed Ayton thus far.

“Jalen can shoot for a tall dude,” Ayton said Thursday on a Zoom call with reporters. “He has a great personality, a cool kid and very mature for his age. I’m always on him. That’s my rook so I make sure he is doing things right and he takes criticism pretty well. We know each other’s personality so everything is respectful and he enjoys competing. You can tell he enjoys hitting me, too. We play physical [in practice].”

Ayton admitted he hasn’t really taken on a mentorship role like this but said he is now ready to do so. Players often want to see how a rookie works and the way they learn and it appears as though Smith is exceeding expectations with the Suns.

Smith will have his first opportunity to play on Saturday as the Suns begin their preseason slate. He projects to see backup minutes this season in the frontcourt and his training with Ayton will be good preparation for what he will see throughout the year.

Thunder vs. Suns halftime stats: Darius Bazley has 16 points in start

The Oklahoma City Thunder took a big first quarter lead but trailed the Phoenix Suns at halftime on Monday.

The Oklahoma City Thunder took a big lead over the Phoenix Suns in the first quarter by forcing turnovers, but relinquished it in the second quarter when center Deandre Ayton entered the game.

After the first half, Oklahoma City trailed 65-64.

Darius Bazley, starting in the place of Danilo Gallinari, posted 16 points. It’s another big game for the 20-year-old, who made one 3-pointer and had his toe on the line for what was almost a second 3.

Chris Paul had 12 points with five assists.

Off the bench, Andre Roberson had seven points and Hamidou Diallo had six.

In the first quarter, the Thunder took the lead largely on the back of aggressive defense and forcing turnovers. Overall in the half, they scored 16 points off 11 turnovers, and one such play helped lead to a big run.

Holding a five-point lead with four minutes left in the first quarter, Paul stole the ball from Devin Booker and then completed the alley-oop with Bazley to increase the lead to 23-16.

Booker checked out about a minute later and Oklahoma City went on a 14-7 over the final three minutes of the quarter to take a 37-23 lead into quarter two.

However, Ayton took the court in the second quarter. He did not start after missing a coronavirus test Sunday, but was eligible to play after testing negative Monday.

Without Steven Adams or Nerlens Noel for OKC, Ayton posted a plus-11 in the half, scoring six points and used his gravity to create space around him. Suns sharpshooter Cam Johnson had 15 points with 3 3-pointers, including one that was a four-point play.

Booker had 19 points on 6-for-11 shooting and three assists in the half.

Former Thunder guard Cam Payne, who signed with the Suns shortly before bubble play began, had eight points. He drew a flagrant offensive foul on Diallo, and Billy Donovan drew a technical for arguing the foul call.

Phoenix scored 42 points in the second quarter as Oklahoma City scored 27.
