DaVon Hamilton ‘trending in the right direction’ after tough 2023

Doug Pederson is optimistic that DaVon Hamilton will be back to himself in 2024 after his 2023 season was derailed.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton is on the path back to full strength after his 2023 season was derailed by a non-football related back issue.

“All indications this offseason are that he’s trending in the right direction; he’s getting back,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson told reporters earlier this week. “I’m excited for that and I know he is too. We missed that piece last year and, even though he played late [in the season], he just wasn’t the same.”

Hamilton received a contract extension last year and appeared primed for a breakout season when an infection from a spinal abscess sidelined him in August.

“A lot of stuff was going on,” Hamilton told Jaguars.com in December. “A lot of side effects were going on. I was in a weird place. This isn’t really a normal illness, or a normal infection people get. It was very strange. I feel very fortunate. There was a lot of stuff that could have happened. I could be not playing football permanently.”

Hamilton returned in October, but only played 30 snaps in two games before he was scratched for the next two. By the season’s end, Hamilton appeared in eight games but earned a dismal 36.2 grade from PFF — less than half his 72.6 grade from 2022.

Without much help from the 335-pound defensive tackle, the Jaguars struggled to generate much pressure from the interior as Josh Allen and Travon Walker combined for more than two-thirds of the team’s sack total. Jacksonville also allowed three of its last six opponents to rack up more than 150 rushing yards.

The Jaguars opened up the pocketbooks to add Arik Armstead to their defensive line to help fix those issues. But getting a renewed version of Hamilton would go a long way too.

Travis Etienne, Tyson Campbell active vs. Bengals in Week 13

The Jaguars listed three of their four questionable players as active.

The Jacksonville Jaguars listed four players as questionable Saturday, but three of them, including running back Travis Etienne Jr., are officially active for Monday Night Football against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The only player missing the Week 13 game due to injury is tight end Brenton Strange, who suffered a foot injury in practice.

The team elevated tight end Josh Pederson, son of head coach Doug Pederson, from the practice squad Monday.

Another notable player absent from the list of inactives is defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton. After missing the first couple months of the season due to a bacterial infection, Hamilton returned in Week 8. However, he played just two games before he was a healthy scratch in the last two weeks.

Now Hamilton is set to make his return to the lineup and the team sat down Angelo Blackson, making room for plenty of snaps.

For the Bengals, there were no big surprises.

On Monday, the Bengals placed starting cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt.

Jaguars’ DaVon Hamilton, Tyson Campbell inactive vs. Texans in Week 12

Jaguars defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton is a healthy scratch again.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton is one of five players listed as inactive for a Week 12 game against the Houston Texans.

Tyson Campbell was ruled out by the Jaguars on Friday, while both Zay Jones and Roy Robertson-Harris were listed as questionable. Both Jones and Robertson-Harris are active.

Hamilton, 26, missed the first seven games of the season while dealing with a bacterial infection in his back. While he returned to play two games, he struggled to make much of an impact and was a healthy scratch for Jacksonville’s Week 11 matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

Houston ruled out three players — Noah Brown, Jake Hansen, and Jimmie Ward — on Friday and added four more inactives Sunday.

Not included on the list for the Texans are running back Dameon Pierce and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, who were both questionable. Scruggs will make his NFL debut after spending the first 11 weeks of the season on injured reserve with a hamstring issue.

Doug Pederson explains why DaVon Hamilton was a healthy scratch

The Jaguars made the surprising decision to keep DaVon Hamilton out of action Sunday.

With all eyes on the status of wide receiver Zay Jones, it was a different player who ended up being the biggest surprise when the Jacksonville Jaguars announced their inactive players Sunday.

Defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton, who returned from injured reserve near the end of October, was ruled out by the Jaguars for the team’s Week 11 game against the Tennessee Titans.

“It was a healthy scratch,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said. “I just want to make sure that he is mentally and physically ready to go. As you guys know, we’re not going to put somebody out there to risk anything further, and it was the decision by me to just hold him one week, see where he’s at, and get him more practice time, get him more reps, get him back to where he was a year ago.

“He’s missed a lot of time. You have to understand, he’s missed a lot of time. I think it’s definitely taken a toll a little bit, but he’s busted his tail to be in a position to help us. I think it’s going to be a week-to-week decision, but he understands where we are, and he appreciated that, and we’ll see where he’s at again this week.”

Hamilton, 26, has yet to reveal the specifics of the setback that sidelined him for about two months. He was originally placed on the injured reserve while dealing with what the team called a “non-football related medical issue” with his back. The Jaguars later revealed that it was some sort of infection that required a lengthy antibiotic treatment.

Prior to the issue, Hamilton looked to be primed to make a big impact for the Jaguars in 2023. After a career-best season last year, Jacksonville gave the lineman a three-year, $34.5 million extension in April.

Hamilton has been ineffective since his return, though. Against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 10, the defensive tackle earned a team-low 24.7 grade on Pro Football Focus.

With the lineman out of action Sunday, the Jaguars defense held the Titans to 235 yards of total offense and kept running back Derrick Henry to just 38 rushing yards.

Studs and duds in Jaguars’ 34-14 win vs. Titans in Week 11

Just about everything went right for the Jaguars in their 20-point win Sunday.

Just about everything went right for the Jacksonville Jaguars in their 34-14 win against the Tennessee Titans in Week 11.

The offense cruised down the field on several lengthy drives, cashing in four touchdowns and two field goals. The Jaguars defense pitched a shutout until the final play of the third quarter, holding Derrick Henry to just 38 rushing yards on the day.

It was a win Jacksonville absolutely had to have after a blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers at home in Week 10. But beyond improving to 7-3, it was also the offensive rhythm and return to form on defense that bodes well for the Jaguars as they approach the home stretch of the season.

These are the players who stood out most for the Jaguars’ in their much-needed 20-point win at EverBank Stadium on Sunday:

Zay Jones, 3 other questionable Jaguars active vs. Titans

Zay Jones will return to the lineup for the Jaguars in Week 11 against the Titans.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will have wide receiver Zay Jones back in the lineup for the first time since he re-injured his knee in Week 5.

None of the four Jaguars who were listed as questionable, which included Jones, appeared on the team’s list of inactives for a Week 11 game against the Tennessee Titans.

Jones, 28, suffered a knee injury in Week 2 and went down again in his return three weeks later. Earlier this week, the veteran receiver was arrested on a domestic battery charge.

The most surprising name on the list is defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton, who has struggled since returning from an infection that kept him out early in the season.

Defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris, rookie offensive tackle Anton Harrison, and rookie return specialist Parker Washington were the other three questionable Jaguars players.

The other significant loss for the Jaguars this week is Tyson Campbell, but it’s no surprise as the third-year cornerback was ruled out Friday due to a hamstring injury suffered last week.

For the Titans, three starters — wide receiver Treylon Burks, offensive tackle Andre Dillard, and cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting — were already ruled out Friday

Tennessee’s two questionable players, guard Daniel Brunskill and linebacker Luke Gifford, are both active.

Jaguars move DT DaVon Hamilton from IR to active roster

Jaguars defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton is officially set to make his 2023 debut Sunday against the Steelers.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton is officially on the active roster and available for the team’s Week 8 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

It was an expected move that comes 16 days after the Jaguars opened up the 21-day window for Hamilton to return from the injured reserve where he spent the first seven weeks of the season.

While Hamilton has declined to divulge specifics about the issue that sidelined him to start the year, the Jaguars said he was treated with antibiotics meaning the defensive tackle was dealing with an infection of some sort. He was originally placed on the injured reserve while dealing with what the team called a “non-football related medical issue.”

Hamilton, 26, has developed into a full-time starter and earned a three-year contract extension earlier this year. But Jacksonville may be patient about his snap count and usage in his return to the lineup Sunday.

“You’re not in pads like you would be in training camp or earlier part of the season as much,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said of the challenges Hamilton faces. “Just that physicality part and getting his legs and his conditioning to gain speed back. If he’s up for this week, then I’m sure we’ll keep an eye on him.”

In addition to his prowess in run defense, Hamilton could provide a significant boost to the Jaguars pass rush. The team has been lacking interior push and has seen its group of outside linebackers record 12.5 of the team’s 13 sacks (27th most in the NFL) through the first seven games.

DaVon Hamilton hopeful to make season debut vs. Steelers

DaVon Hamilton says he’s “really excited to finally be able to play” this season.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton sounds pretty optimistic about his chances of playing in Week 8 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In an interview with 1010XL’s Mia O’Brien on Wednesday, the Jaguars lineman said that he’s ready to play and all he’s waiting for is the green light from the coaches.

“I’m really excited to finally be able to play, it’s already halfway through the season already,” Hamilton said. When asked if he anticipated playing in Pittsburgh, he said “Hopefully, yeah.”

While Hamilton has declined to this point to tell reporters what exactly the issue was that kept him out, the Jaguars revealed that he was taking antibiotics to treat an infection of some kind.

On Oct. 12, the Jaguars opened the 21-day window for Hamilton to practice with the team in his return from the injured reserve. Last week, the defensive tackle was listed as a full participant in practices, but didn’t play in the team’s Week 7 game against the New Orleans Saints.

“It’s been a struggle getting back to where I am right now,” Hamilton told O’Brien. “I’m just so incredibly blessed to be where I am, and to be able to be back with the team and practicing and what not.”

Hamilton, 26, was the Jaguars’ third highest graded defensive starter on Pro Football Focus during the 2022 season behind only Josh Allen and Tyson Campbell. His emergence as a stout presence in the middle of the line earned him a three-year contract extension in the offseason.

In his absence, Jacksonville has managed to be one of the NFL’s best run defenses, holding opposing rushers to just 3.6 yards per carry. The team hasn’t been able to get much interior push against the pass, though.

Only four teams have fewer sacks than the Jaguars and 12.5 of the team’s 13 sacks have come from the team’s four outside linebackers.

4 Jaguars players sit out Tuesday practice, Trevor Lawrence returns

Trevor Lawrence isn’t the only Jaguars player dealing with an injury heading into Thursday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence returned to the practice field Tuesday with a brace on his injured left knee. The team was still without four players, though.

Cornerback Tyson Campbell, wide receiver Zay Jones, offensive lineman Walker Little, and offensive lineman Brandon Scherff were all absent Tuesday. With a game against the New Orleans Saints just two days away, it appears unlikely that any of those four will be available Thursday.

The sixth player listed on the report, defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton, is still technically on the injured reserve, although the Jaguars opened his 21-day window to return to the active roster last week.

For the Saints, the only change to their lengthy list of injured players was quarterback Derek Carr practicing fully Tuesday.

There are several big name players on the injury report for the Saints, including Cam Jordan, Tyrann Mathieu, Demario Davis, and Chris Olave. Perhaps the biggest concern for New Orleans, though, is the offensive line with Ryan Ramczyk, James Hurst, and Landon Young all listed as non-participants.
