Broncos interview David Shaw for head coach opening

The Broncos had an in-person interview with David Shaw on Wednesday.

The Denver Broncos interviewed former Stanford head coach David Shaw for their head coach opening on Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday evening.

Shaw (50) played wide receiver at Stanford before going on to become a position coach at the college and NFL level. After stints with the Eagles, Raiders and Ravens, Shaw coached at the University of San Diego for one year in 2006 before returning to his alma mater.

Shaw started out as the Cardinal’s offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2007 and later switched to OC/RBs coach duties in 2010. He was promoted to head coach in 2011, a position he held for 12 seasons.

Stanford went 96-54 under Shaw, reaching eight-straight bowl games in his first eight seasons. More recently, the program struggled over the last four years, ultimately leading Shaw to resign in 2022 following consecutive 3-9 seasons.

Shaw’s Stanford connection is notable given that three members of the Broncos’ ownership group are also close to the school.

Denver co-owner/CEO Greg Penner holds an MBA from Stanford’s business school and his wife and fellow co-owner Carrie Penner has a master’s degree from the university. Broncos minority owner Condoleezza Rice is the director of the school’s Hoover Institution, and she served as Stanford’s provost from 1993-1999.

Shaw is the eighth known candidate for the Broncos’ opening after the team fired Nathaniel Hackett in December. Denver’s first (virtual) interview was with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh on Monday. After that, the team had an in-person interview with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero on Tuesday.

In addition to Shaw, the Broncos also had an in-person interview with ex-NFL coach Jim Caldwell on Wednesday. At least four more interviews are on the way.

Denver plans to interview Rams DC Raheem Morris on Jan. 17, and they have also requested interviews with 49ers DC DeMeco Ryans, ex-Saints HC Sean Payton and Cowboys DC Dan Quinn. Ryans and Payton are also eligible for in-person interviews on Jan. 17. Quinn would have to wait until Jan. 18 because Dallas plays on Monday.
