MLB fans wondered what happened to David Ross after the Cubs hired Craig Counsell

Did the Cubs hire a new manager before firing David Ross???

The Chicago Cubs dropped a stunning revelation on us on Monday afternoon. Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, they hired former Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell as their new clubhouse leader. That’s great for them because Counsell is quite good but, uh … wasn’t David Ross still their manager?

Something doesn’t quite add up here.

News of Counsell’s hire came as a shock to the MLB world because the Cubs seemingly offered zero notice that Ross — Chicago’s manager since 2020 — wouldn’t be returning to the organization. In fact, Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts even went as far as to say that Ross was their guy moving forward after the 2023 season ended. So, again, what changed between early October and now? And why didn’t anyone with Cubs brass say anything in advance?

Ross’s apparent sudden departure from the Cubs had MLB fans speculating about what could’ve happened when Counsell officially took over as Chicago’s manager.

Mics clearly picked up David Ross’ fiery insult to the umpire after his first-inning ejection

The ump didn’t even miss the call!

Chicago Cubs manager David Ross seemed ready to get an early start on his All-Star break because, well, he didn’t stick around for very long at all on Sunday.

Ross was ejected five pitches into the bottom of the first inning after he took exception with a ball call from home plate umpire Alex Mackay at Yankee Stadium. He also might’ve been annoyed with Mackay calling Kyle Hendricks for a pitch clock violation to start the inning. But either way, it was especially hilarious to see Ross so upset because Mackay hadn’t missed a call yet in the inning.

That didn’t matter to Ross, though, because he emerged from the dugout after the ejection and brought some heat for Mackay. We heard it all, thanks to the YES Network microphones. (Warning: NSFW language)

We could hear him say as he got into Mackay’s face:

“You got one goddamn game before you get a break and you’re that (expletive) bad already?”

That material was top notch, but again, Ross wasn’t even right.

If you’re going to get ejected in the first inning, at least be on the right side of the argument. Ross must’ve had somewhere to be.

David Ross angrily calls out umps and Brewers for closing their roof with expletive-filled interview

David Ross was MAD.

David Ross wasn’t happy for most of July 4.

The Chicago Cubs manager argued with umpires over whether William Contreras interfered by taking a certain route to first base that may have gotten in the way of Miguel Amaya’s throw to score a run. Then? He took issue with the Brewers closing the roof of American Family Field in the middle of the game.

Oh, did I mention that the Cubs WON on Tuesday, 7-6? Still, Ross spoke to reporters and let loose on the day: “I know it’s not an easy job, but some of the pitches that got called today weren’t even close. So, it’s gotta be better. They’re closing the roof to get rid of the shadows late, there’s a lot of bull [expletive] that went on today that was really frustrating.”

Then: “I [expletive] thought it was horse [expletive], I don’t know.”

He was MAD mad.

Cubs manager David Ross flipping double birds for some reason became an instant meme

Double birds meme alert!

Sooo many questions here: Why did David Ross flip a pair of middle fingers while the Chicago Cubs were playing the San Francisco Giants?

Clearly, he was flipping those birds at someone, right? And it didn’t look malicious! Ross has always seemed like a guy having fun, and perhaps that was the case in a moment that just happened to be captured by one of the many cameras around Oracle Park.

Regardless, that’s not what we’re here for. We’re here for the memes that popped up the moment that Ross delivered the fingers.

Here’s a roundup and as you’d expect: WARNING, NSFW fingers ahead!

Actress Torrey DeVitto and Cubs manager David Ross are now Instagram official

They’re official!

According to Torrey DeVitto’s Instagram, she and Chicago Cubs manager David Ross are officially dating.

On Saturday, the actress known for Chicago Med and Chicago Fire, as well as a role in Pretty Little Liars, posted a photo of her giving a kiss to Ross on the cheek with the caption, “Love him madly.” That would make them Instagram official!

Even before that photo, DeVitto had posted snaps from Cincinnati, where she drew a heart around Ross — who was in the dugout at Great American Ballpark — with the caption “#SaveTheBestforLast” and what I guess you’d call the heart-eyes emoji.

Congrats to the pair!

Five former Auburn players in Garrett Cooper, Grant Dayton, Josh Donaldson, Josh Palacios and David Ross are one step closer to winning the World Series after making the MLB postseason.

Dayton recently won his second straight NL East championship with the Atlanta Braves, who are set to open postseason play against the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN. Dayton turned in a career year with the Braves, going 2-1 with a 2.30 ERA in 18 appearances.

Cooper and the Miami Marlins, making the team’s first postseason appearance since 2003, will face off with Ross and the NL Central champion Chicago Cubs Wednesday at 1 p.m. on ABC. Cooper hit .283 with six home runs and 20 RBI in 34 games and is set to make his postseason debut.

Ross led the Cubs to the organization’s first NL Central title since 2017 in his first season as the manager.

Donaldson and the AL Central champion Minnesota Twins kick off the postseason by taking on the Houston Astros Tuesday at 1 p.m. on ABC. Donaldson is not on the Twins’ Wild Card roster due to injury but is a member of the team’s taxi squad.

Palacios and the Toronto Blue Jays take on the AL East champion Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday at 4 p.m. on TBS. Palacios, who was added to Toronto’s taxi squad Sept. 17, is not included on Toronto’s Wild Card roster but is a part of the team’s postseason player pool.
