BTN’s Dave Revsine: ‘We were really blown away’ by Michigan football practice

The positive reviews keep coming in! #GoBlue

The positive reviews keep coming in for Michigan football.

After Big Ten Network visited Ann Arbor for practice, the 12th stop for the network on its 14-team conference tour, no team received more effusive praise than the Wolverines.

Gerry DiNardo raved both on Twitter and on “Big Ten Today” about how good the maize and blue looked. You can add his cohort, Dave Revsine, to the list. Revsine appeared on “Stoney and Jansen” this week and shared why Michigan is among the top teams in the conference.

“I’ve gotta say, we were really blown away by this practice,” Revsine said. “Man, we were really impressed. It was a great practice. There has to be questions on defense just because of how good Hutchinson and Ojabo were. One and two in the Big Ten in sacks — they had more sacks between the two of them than many Big Ten teams did. Are they just gonna plug someone in there? I don’t think so. But man, they were really good. That whole defense can really run. They’ve got a ton of athletes.

”Offensively — this is going to be a great offense. They were humming the day we were there. I thought both quarterbacks looked very good. McNamara — the ball never hits the ground when he’s in there. He’s just so accurate. They’re really talented at wide receiver. To see Ronnie Bell back, running full speed — and then offensive line is just gonna be fabulous. It was so good last year, and I don’t really think they’ve missed a beat there. The transfer from Virginia is every bit as good a center as Vastardis was. Physically, they just look great.

“Really, really impressed by Michigan.”

Revsine is one of the few outsiders who has gotten a chance to see the quarterback battle between incumbent Cade McNamara and phenom challenger J.J. McCarthy. While there are loud cries from many in the fan base for McCarthy, Revsine insists, after watching both in practice, that the incumbent should be the man starting under center. He explains why.

”Oh, I would go with McNamara for sure,” Revsine said. “I think there’s a little more risk with McCarthy. He’s a really, really good quarterback and any team in college football would be falling all over themselves to get him. I’m not suggesting he’s not good, but I guess I just feel like McNamara makes such good decisions and it’s just not worth the risk. You want a guy that won’t put the ball in harm’s way simply because you don’t need the risk because your offense is so good that you’ll be great with McNamara.

”We haven’t even talked about the tight end. Erick All — holy cow, Jon! There just aren’t guys that look like him, that run like him. You just have so many weapons, I think you need someone who isn’t going to make mistakes at that spot. So, for me, it’s McNamara. I think there has to be a role for McCarthy because he does add a really dangerous dimension, but for me, it’s McNamara — no doubt in my mind.”

Michigan opens up the 2022 season on Sept. 3 when it host Colorado State at The Big House.

Greg Schiano on playing his young talent: ‘If you come out and give us the best chance to win, you’re playing’

Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano tells the Big Ten Network that he is willing to play his young talent.

The incoming class of Rutgers football talent is impressive, a 2022 recruiting class that features six four-star players is expected to make an impact for the Big Ten program.

How big of an impact and how soon, however, remains to be seen. But if they are ready, they will play.

Talking with the Big Ten Network’s Dave Revsine, Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano was asked about his talented freshman class and how he plans to bring the group along. Specifically, Revsine posited to Schiano about playing the young talent on the roster ahead of some of the more veteran, seasoned players who have significant snaps and experience.

“I’ve never really gotten into that very much. I think whoever gives the best chance to win, that’s who is going to play,” Schiano told the Big Ten Network.

“They know that and I think kids really appreciate that too because they know it doesn’t matter if they’re a freshman, a first-year guy…If you come out and give us the best chance to win, you’re playing. So that’s how we do it.”

At the Big Ten’s annual football media days last month, Schiano was rather upbeat about Rashad Rochelle, a freshman wide receiver. Rochelle was a standout high school quarterback who is learning a new position but has the athleticism to make an impact this season.

The offensive line group, headlined by the trio of four-star offensive tackle Jacob Allen along with two promising interior offensive linemen in Kwabena Asamoah and Joe DeCroce, is likely a year away from seeing the field.

At practice yesterday, running back Kyle Monangai, a redshirt sophomore,  said that four-star running back Sam Brown was adjusting well and impressing in training camp.

Watch: Half-Naked Man Interrupts Urban Meyer’s TV Appearance

There are a lot of questions to ask after Urban Meyer’s appearance on the Big Ten Network this Tuesday.

Let’s face it – if you’re reading this website chances are you’re a college football fan.  Maybe huge, maybe somewhat of one, but certainly at least a fairly decent college football fan.

Today’s news sucks, I have no other way of putting it.  It’s the Big Ten and Pac-12 today and could very easily be the rest of FBS college football in a matter of days.

It’s yet another kick to the mid-section of 2020, a year that simply can’t end soon enough.

We do have an important piece of video to share with you however that will hopefully at least make you smile a bit.

Urban Meyer was on the Big Ten Network’s breaking news coverage of the cancellation, sharing his insight as to what happens next.  In the middle of answering a question from Dave Revsine, something strange happened, see for yourself below:

I have more than a couple questions.

  • Where is Urban Meyer doing this hit from?  An RV?
  • Who is the half naked man behind him?
  • How does it take Meyer so long to realize the half-naked man is there?
  • How does Meyer not have any idea they’re not cutting away from him towards the end of the hit?

A lot to dissect here, no doubt.  I know we have a lot of questions about college football today and what happens now, but for a breather I’d like to know a lot more about what in the wide-world of sports is going on in this interview.

BTN’s Rick Pizzo picks Ryan Day and Ohio State as his favorite story of the 2019-2020 athletic season

Ryan Day and Ohio State was picked as the favorite story for the 2019-2020 Big Ten athletic season by BTN’s Rick Pizzo.

I feel like every article now starts with sports is shut down because … you know where I’m going. But it’s true. We don’t have much to watch that took place prior to the tail-end of the college basketball season.

The cycle of sports coverage for college athletics generally starts in the fall with college football, then runs through the spring sports that end their seasons in the early summer. Except this year, there were no spring sports, only fall and winter before things got cut short very prematurely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

So what better thing to do than reflect?

That’s exactly what BTN did when three of the studio analysts got together to each provide their favorite story of the Big Ten athletic season, prior to everything being shelved.

The trio of Dave Revsine, Rick Pizzo, and Mike Hall each had different answers, but Pizzo’s was what Ryan Day and Ohio State did. He even threw a little shade at Clemson with commenting on the Buckeyes getting the short end of the stick with the officiating in the Fiesta Bowl.

You can listen to Pizzo’s comments, as well as the other two’s favorite stories by clicking on the below Tweet shared by the Big Ten Network’s official Twitter feed.
