Down Nyheim Hines, the Buffalo Bills have done their due diligence on multiple running backs on Monday. According to a report, the team worked out three rushers in total.

Hines, 26, suffered a season-ending knee injury in a freak jet skiing accident over the weekend. Previously it was reported that former Tennessee Titans third-round pick Darrynton Evans was set to have a workout in Buffalo.

However, he’s not alone.

NFL insider Aaron Wilson from Click2Houston.com notes that Abram Smith and Kylin Hill also worked out for the Bills.

Smith most recently suited up for the DC Defenders of the XFL. He was named to the All-XFL team as he led the league with 791 rushing yards and averaged 5.0 yards per carry over 10 games. He added another 13 catches for 91 yards. The next-closest rusher in the XFL to Smith totaled 348 yards fewer than him.

Smith previously signed as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints in 2022. He was cut at the end of training camp that year, and then he went on to be a top draft pick in the XFL.

Hill was a seventh-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2021 and has only 11 total NFL carries in his career. His larger contributions have occurred on special teams. Hill was released by the Packers in November 2022.

While outsiders have only just learned about the Nyheim Hines injury update, it appears the Buffalo Bills have known.

According to NFL Insider Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com via Titans Wire, on Sunday former Tennessee Titans third-round pick Darrynton Evans is having an upcoming workout with the Buffalo Bills.

On early Monday morning, reports surfaced that Hines is set to miss the entire 2023 NFL season. He reportedly sustained an off-site knee injury which will keep him off the field. That leaves the likes of James Cook, Damien Harris and Latavius Murray in Buffalo’s backfield just days ahead of training camp’s start on Wednesday.

In addition to his experience as a rusher, like Hines, Evans has returned kicks as well.

Selected in 2020, the Titans waived Evans after just two season. Injuries hampered most of his tenure in Tennessee as he only appeared in six games over two years. The 25-year-old recorded 16 carries for 61 yards and four receptions for 38 yards.

Evans was then claimed by the Chicago Bears but spent time between their practice squad and roster in 2022. In Chicago, he averaged 4.6 yards per carry on 14 handoffs during six game appearances.

Earlier this spring, the Indianapolis Colts signed Evans. However, he was released following their 2023 NFL draft.

Ex-Titans RB Darrynton Evans getting a look from Bills

Former Titans RB Darrynton Evans is reportedly slated for a workout with the Bills.

Former Tennessee Titans third-round pick and running back, Darrynton Evans, reportedly has a workout scheduled with the Buffalo Bills.

The news comes from Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com, but it was not revealed when the workout would take place.

Taken in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Titans, Evans lasted only two seasons in Tennessee before he was waived last offseason.

Evans, who was sidelined by injuries for much of his tenure, played in just six games over the two seasons and recorded 16 carries for 61 yards and four receptions for 38 yards. He also saw action in the return game, with 10 kickoff returns for 223 yards.

After striking out in Nashville, Evans signed on with the Chicago Bears in 2022, playing in six games and tallying 14 carries for 64 yards and one reception for 33 yards.

He latched on with the Indianapolis Colts back in March but was waived by the team in May.

Ex-Titans RB Darrynton Evans waived by Colts

Former Titans RB Darrynton Evans was waived by the Colts on Tuesday.

With the Indianapolis Colts bringing in a slew of new players during the 2023 NFL draft, they decided to part ways with former Tennessee Titans running back, Darrynton Evans.

The Colts announced on Tuesday they have waived Evans, who was signed by the team in March. Along with the Appalachian State product, Indy also parted with running back Aaron Shampklin, wide receiver Kristian Wilkerson, and cornerback David Vereen.

Evans isn’t the only former Titan in that group, though, as Wilkerson was a 2020 undrafted free-agent signing of Tennessee. He has also spent time with the New England Patriots during his career but didn’t play a snap in 2022.

The Colts were Evans’ third team since being drafted in 2020 by the Titans. He also played for the Chicago Bears in 2022, appearing in six games (no starts).

As far as the rest of the 2020 draft class that Evans was part of, the Titans only have two of those players still rostered in Kristian Fulton and Chris Jackson, although Jackson was waived and brought back in 2022.

Colts waive four players

The Colts waived four players Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts waived four players following the 2023 NFL draft, the team announced Tuesday.

While these won’t be the only four to get the boot, the Colts have to begin making room for the large class of undrafted rookie free agents coming in this week.

The four players waived included running back Darrynton Evans, running back Aaron Shampklin, wide receiver Kristian Wilkerson and CB David Vereen.

All four of these players likely were competing for the final spots in their respective positional rooms, but all four of them saw the Colts bring in some major competition during the draft.

Shampklin and Evans would have had a difficult time competing with sixth-round pick Evan Hull while the Colts drafted wide receiver Josh Downs and three cornerbacks including second-rounder Julius Brents.

Grading the Colts’ free agency moves in 2023

Grading every move the Colts have made in free agency this offseason.

The Indianapolis Colts have turned their attention to the 2023 NFL draft after making some waves since the opening of free agency last month.

While the Colts are still likely to add a handful of pieces to the roster before the draft—specifically at cornerback and offensive line—the majority of their moves have been made in free agency.

If and when those moves are made before the draft, we’ll add them to this list of grades.

Even with the noise quieting down, we’re still tracking the moves the Colts are making in free agency and will do so through the month of April.

Here’s a look at our grades for the Colts’ moves in free agency, which also includes the notable moves of a trade and the release of a pair of starters:

5 things to know about Colts new TE Pharaoh Brown

Get to know new Colts TE Pharaoh Brown.

As free agency rolls on, the Indianapolis Colts continue adding pieces to address critical areas of need. On Friday, the team added free-agent tight end, Pharaoh Brown.

Brown’s deal with the team won’t become official until April 9, pending a physical, but he joins a crowded tight end room with Mo Alie-Cox, Jelani Woods, Kylen Granson, and Andrew Ogletree, among others.

Here are five things to know about the Colts’ new tight end:

How Colts signing Darrynton Evans impacts RB depth chart

Here’s how the signing of Darrynton Evans impacts the Colts depth chart.

Since the Indianapolis Colts traded running back Nyheim Hines, they have been searching for the answer to what the backfield will look like beyond  Jonathan Taylor.

Taylor’s junior season was riddled with injuries and a struggling offensive line, making his quest for leading the league in rushing again futile. It highlighted how much the Colts need more options that can produce to provide relief for Taylor and a balanced rushing attack.

They made a move to help aid some of that depth by signing free-agent Darrynton Evans.

With this in mind, Indy’s running back depth chart is as follows:

RB1: Jonathan Taylor

RB2: Zack Moss

RB3: Deon Jackson

Backups competing for a roster spot: Jake Funk, Aaron Shampklin, Darrynton Evans

Signing Evans is likely a pure competition, formidable depth, and skillset move for general manager Chris Ballard. Having enough healthy players is always a priority, and if those players have additional skills, such as special teams experience, that dramatically helps the team.

Right now, it’s doubtful Evans overtakes Moss as the backup to Jonathan Taylor, but he could push Deon Jackson for the third running back spot. The key with Evans will be his health and his production.

Since being drafted in 2020, he’s only played 12 games. In those games, he had 30 carries for 125 yards.

Analyzing the addition of RB Darrynton Evans to the Colts’ RB room.

The Indianapolis Colts added some depth and competition to the backfield with the signing of free-agent running back Darrynton Evans on Friday.

After the Colts made some more-than-expected noise to open free agency in the middle of March, their moves in that area quieted down a bit as the focus turned to the 2023 NFL draft.

However, they got back into the free-agent market by making an addition to the backfield that should bring out some competition during training camp.
