Here are the former Chiefs players who were selected in the USFL draft

Several former #Chiefs players were selected in the inaugural USFL draft. Check out the full list here:

The inaugural USFL draft has come to an end after 35 rounds between Day 1 and Day 2. The USFL draft is quite a bit different than the NFL draft with certain position groups are assigned to specific rounds.

The first round of the USFL draft saw two former Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks selected with the No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks. Several other former Chiefs players were part of the draft pool and selected in the remaining rounds.

Here’s a quick look at the former Chiefs players selected below:

Vikings make two practice squad additions

The Vikings announced the addition of two wide receivers to the practice squad on Wednesday.

With Adam Thielen’s playing status for Week 15 up in the air, Minnesota bulked up its practice squad wide receiver depth.

The Vikings announced Wednesday that they signed WRs Damion Ratley and Darrius Shepherd, both of whom could be decent candidates to be called up for the Bears game Monday night,

Thielen missed Week 14 with an ankle injury. Additionally, the Vikings placed WR Dede Westbrook on the COVID-19/Reserve list this week, leaving his playing status in doubt.

Ratley signed with the Cowboys practice squad earlier this year, only to be released shortly after. He most recently played in an NFL game in 2020, doing so with the Giants. He had 63 receiving yards in five games with New York.

Shepherd has experience in the league as a kick and punt returner, which suggests he may be a possible replacement for Westbrook this week. He had one punt return for six yards with the Packers in 2020. He also had 11 kick returns for 227 receiving yards that year.

With Vikings RB Alexander Mattison out for the Bears game Monday night, Minnesota may opt to give kick returner Kene Nwangwu more reps at running back in Week 15. That could open the door for Shepherd to take kick returning duties in addition to punt return duties. However, nothing is set in stone at the moment. The Vikings could go in a lot of different directions in Chicago.

Local WR Darrius Shepherd has wanted to play for Chiefs since grade school

From rooting for Tony G, Priest Holmes and Dante Hall to playing with Patrick Mahomes, #Chiefs WR Darrius Shepherd is living out a childhood dream.

A receiver on the 90-man offseason roster is getting a chance to live out his childhood dreams.

When he was just a kid growing up in Kansas City, WR Darrius Shepherd was a Chiefs fan. And he’s been a Chiefs fan for as long as he can remember, getting it from his father who he describes as a “die-hard.” Many of us can probably relate and relate to the memories he has of teams of old.

“Yeah, that’s probably where I got it from,” Shepherd explained. “He was a die-hard Chiefs fan, so I kind of came along that way too. We’d watch games on Sundays, talk about the different guys throughout the years, whether it was Tony Gonzalez, Priest Holmes, Dante Hall, whoever, just taking pieces of their game, and trying to go emulate it in the backyard.”

Shepherd recalls coming to Arrowhead Stadium for two games. He didn’t have a lot of opportunities to go and see the team play live, but he remembers how special it was to get an opportunity to see the action up close and personal. Years later, after playing for Blue Springs High and North Dakota State, he’d return to Arrowhead Stadium as a player with the Green Bay Packers.

“It’s probably my favorite game by far,” Shepherd told reporters on Monday.

That’ll probably change if Shepherd can make it through two waves of roster cuts ahead of preseason game No. 3, when the Chiefs are set to face the Minnesota Vikings. That’s because this time, instead of playing against his childhood team, he’d be suiting up for them and playing in their home stadium.

“When you’re in second grade and the teacher asked, ‘What do you want to do when you grow up?’ It’s ‘Be a Kansas City Chiefs football player,'” Shepherd said. “So that’s kind of the dream up until college, and then it kind of doesn’t matter where I go. Then you get that phone call, and to find out there’s an opportunity, I was super excited to come be a part of this.”

Shepherd first earned his opportunity in Kansas City after a tryout at mandatory minicamp. He spent the 2019 and 2020 NFL seasons playing for the Green Bay Packers after having gone undrafted out of North Dakota State. Most of his NFL playing experience to this point has come on special teams.

That said, he’s now worked with two Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks who’ve also been named league MVP. The adjustment going from Aaron Rodgers to Patrick Mahomes hasn’t been much of an adjustment at all, he says.

“I don’t think there’s much to adjust to,” Shepherd said. “I just think they’re both top-level quarterbacks. They’re both fierce competitors. It’s super exciting to play with those high-level guys. It makes it a lot easier on receivers too. You just get to be a sponge and take up their knowledge and being a part of playing with them is special.”

Shepherd has been impressive so far in training camp, doing a lot with his limited opportunities. He’s receiving snaps with second- and third-string units on offense, taking what he learned from Davante Adams in Green Bay and applying it in Kansas City. He’s also been in the mix at punt returner, working behind Mike Hughes, who seems to have the inside track to the starting job.

For now, Shepherd is taking things one day at a time and not trying to get too far ahead of himself when it comes to making the team. He made it to the 90-man roster, but he still feels he has a lot to prove to the coaching staff and his teammates during the remainder of training camp and the preseason.

“I think I’ve just got to show up each day, be consistent, handle my business and make plays when they come my way,” Shepherd said.

If Shepherd can do those things, he’ll certainly have a shot to make it with the team.

Chiefs WR Darrius Shepherd living out a dream by playing for his hometown team

“It’s a dream come true.” Darrius Shepherd grew up a diehard #Chiefs fan, now he’s playing for them.

The Kansas City Chiefs recently added a player with local roots to the 90-man offseason roster, signing WR Darrius Shepherd following a tryout at mandatory minicamp.

Shepherd played football at Blue Springs High School and growing up he considered himself a “diehard” Chiefs fan. He’d leave the area for the first time to play for the North Dakota State Bison in college. He became a three-time FCS national champion with NDSU (2015, 2017 and 2018) before turning pro.

Shepherd would go undrafted in the 2019 NFL draft, joining the Green Bay Packers as a free agent following the draft. When he became a Packer, Shepherd had to cast his long-held Chiefs fandom aside, but it wouldn’t be forgotten.

“Since I can remember, that’s the only team I rooted for growing up,” Shepherd said of the Chiefs, via Inforum. “Some of my favorite players were Dante Hall and Eric Berry among other guys. I was a diehard Chiefs fan until 2019 when I became a Packer. I had to put them away for two years and now I’m back. It’s incredible.”

Now, having joined the franchise he rooted for growing up, Shepherd is one of the few players who get to recognize the dream of playing for their hometown team.

“It’s amazing — having friends and family in the area, being from KC, I’m super excited to go play for the hometown team,” Shepherd continued. “It’s a dream come true.”

Shepherd will have an opportunity to compete with a deep receiver group at training camp in July and August. Being a late addition to the roster, he’ll have an even greater challenge to make the team. To compensate he’s falling back on what he knows — which is what it’s like to play with NFL quarterbacks.

At NDSU he caught passes from Carson Wentz and Easton Stick. In the NFL he’s caught passes from Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. Now, he’ll get a chance to catch passes from Patrick Mahomes, who Shepherd already considers a “legend.”

“I’ve been super blessed to be around a ton of super-talented quarterbacks,” Shepherd explained. “I’m just going to go in and try to be a sponge and learn as much as I can. And take what I learned from A-Rod to apply to Pat because they both have such similarities in their games. It’ll be really cool to play with these legends. I know he’s only been in the game so long, but he is really a legend.”

No matter the outcome of Shepherd’s tenure with the Chiefs, this will be an opportunity that he cherishes. Getting to be a fan, watching what has happened in Kansas City the past few seasons is one thing. Now, he’ll contribute in one way or another toward keeping that success going.

“They’ve been on a great run,” Shepherd said. “Watching as a fan, it’s something you want to be a part of. Now to actually be a part of it, you couldn’t ask for more. I’m excited to help contribute to that and keep winning games and hopefully get a Super Bowl this year.”

Former Packers WR Darrius Shepherd signing with Kansas City Chiefs

The former Packers receiver is signing with the AFC champions.

A former wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers is signing with the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to Nate Taylor of The Athletic, receiver Darrius Shepherd will sign with the Chiefs after trying out during the team’s minicamp.

Shepherd, an undrafted free agent from North Dakota State, played in 14 games for the Packers over the last two seasons. He caught five passes for 46 yards and returned 20 kickoffs for 374 yards (one fumble) and three punts for -3 yards (one fumble).

Shepherd, 25, averaged 7.8 yards per catch and 4.7 yards per target. One of his five catches gained a first down. His lost fumble on a kickoff return was a pivotal play late during a loss to the Indianapolis Colts last season.

Shepherd, who grew up in the Kansas City area, was a rookie minicamp tryout for the Packers in 2019.

The Packers waived Shepherd on Dec. 1 of last year. The Chiefs are his first team since leaving Green Bay.

Report: Chiefs to sign minicamp tryout WR Darrius Shepherd

Another year and another mandatory minicamp tryout signed by the Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs have continued their tradition of adding players to the roster following tryouts at mandatory minicamp.

According to a report from The Athletic’s Nate Taylor, the Chiefs plan to sign receiver and return specialist Darrius Shepherd to the 90-man offseason roster. Shepherd was among the four players that Kansas City brought in for tryouts during their three-day mandatory minicamp which wrapped today.

Shepherd clearly did enough during those three days of practice and meetings to make an impression on the coaching staff in Kansas City. Now he has earned an opportunity with training camp on the horizon, where he can make an even greater impression.

Shepherd is a Kansas City native and played high school football in Blue Springs, so playing for the Chiefs will be a bit of a homecoming for him. He played college football for the NDSU bison, where he became a three-time FCS national champion in 2015, 2017 and 2018.

Shepherd went undrafted in the 2019 NFL draft, joining the Green Bay Packers as a free agent. He spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons as a receiver and return specialist with Green Bay, but wasn’t particularly productive. His best work came in the return game where he recorded 20 returns for over 347 yards during those two seasons.

The Chiefs have a need for consistency and depth in the return game, so it’s possible that’s a role that they envision for Shepherd. The team is currently at 90 players, so expect a corresponding move in order to make room for Shepherd.

Colts hold tryout for QB Brian Lewerke, 6 others

Colts brought in some players for a workout.

The Indianapolis Colts held a tryout for seven players on Wednesday, including former Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke, per the league’s transaction wire.

The other six who were at the tryout were five wide receivers in Marcell Ateman, Darrius Shepherd, Kendrick Murphy, Chris Finke and Jordan Suell. Former first-round pick Robert Nkemdiche was also included.

Lewerke went undrafted in 2020 but was viewed as an intriguing prospect that could have been taken late in the draft. He wound up signing with the New England Patriots but was waived before the season began.

With the news of Philip Rivers’ retirement, the Colts won’t leave any stone unturned in their search for his replacement. Only Jacob Eason is under contract currently so it should be expected that the Colts will bring in more competition.

The Colts can sign these players to futures contracts if they want. The rosters don’t expand to 90 players until after the Super Bowl so any player with a futures contract will be on the reserve list.

Report: Packers releasing WR/KR Darrius Shepherd

With Tavon Austin arriving, the Packers released WR/KR Darrius Shepherd, according to The Athletic.

The arrival of Tavon Austin foreshadowed the end of Darrius Shepherd’s stay on the Green Bay Packers’ active roster.

According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, the Packers cut Shepherd on Tuesday.

Shepherd played in eight games this season, catching five passes for 46 yards and returning 11 kickoffs for 227 yards (one fumble) and one punt for six yards. He played 138 snaps on offense and another 45 on special teams.

The Packers are adding Austin, a veteran receiver with speed and return experience, lessening the need for Shepherd on the roster.

Shepherd filled in for Tyler Ervin as the kick and punt returner. His fumble on a kickoff return was costly during the Packers’ overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 11.

It’s possible the Packers could attempt to bring Shepherd back on the team’s practice squad. The undrafted free agent from North Dakota State was a training camp standout each of the last two summers.

Six points with David Dorey

Six items worth watching heading into the NFL’s Week 4

It was going so well.

The Titans became “it” when they had players and personnel test positive for the COVID-19 virus. Their matchup will be scheduled later in the season and this week may become their bye. Hopefully, this will be the only instance that the NFL will have to deal with it (he said, crossing his fingers and then drawing an imaginary cross on his chest).

Six things going into the weekend:

  1. WR Darrius Shepherd (GB) – Allen Lazard lands on injured reserve after requiring core muscle surgery and will be out an expected six to eight weeks. Davante Adams is expected to return and he’ll soak up most of the targets. Whatever is leftover ends up with Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Darius Shepard. Technically, Shepard is the backup for Lazard and he was on the field for one target last week while Valdes-Scantling only managed one catch on his four targets.Shepard is the new addition to the starting wideouts and was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He was the top receiver at North Dakota State for three years where he played with quarterback Easton Stick (Chargers). He’s worth watching on Moonday night since the Packers are hosting the Falcons and their receivers should all look great. If Shepard can get a share of the  targets, he may develop into something.
  2. QB Carson Wentz (PHI) – Three games into the season and Carson Wentz is currently the No. 14 fantasy quarterback but only because of two rushing scores. Without those, he’d be more around the No. 24 quarterback. The Eagles offensive line has lost two guards and the left tackle is injured. He’s been sacked 11 times and thrown six interceptions against three touchdowns. He’s become unfathomably bad and worsens every week. Hold on – it is not going to get any better. The Eagles next three matchups are at San Francisco, at Pittsburgh and then hosting the Ravens. Jalen Hurts may start eventually because none of the Eagles are going to look any good for the next three weeks. No line, a brutal schedule and injuries to wideouts are going to drag down the fantasy fortunes of all the Eagles.
  3. WR Jeff Smith (NYJ) – Grab your game program – who? In the Thursday night loss to the Broncos, Jamison Crowder returned and led the Jets with ten targets for seven catches and 104 yards. But the second-best wideout was Smith with nine targets for seven receptions and 81 yards.  Braxton Berrios failed to catch any of his three passes. This is not an offense to invest in but his production was notable for a team that cannot keep healthy players. The 6-1, 195-pound Boston College was as an undrafted free agent last year and he only managed one catch on the season. Smith had been on injured reserve with an shoulder  injury but was just activated. He had first-team reps in training camp prior to his injury. Worth tracking in case the Jets ever solve their offensive issues.
  4. WR Andy Isabella (ARI) –  The Cardinals’ diverse passing scheme from HC Kliff Kingsbury suddenly looks like the Texans last year. DeAndre Hopkins absorbs a huge chunk of the passing targets each week but there’s been a little leftover for the other wideouts. The surprising part is that for the last two weeks, Andy Isabella was more productive than either Christian Kirk or Larry Fitzgerald. After logging 67 yards on two catches in Week 2, he caught both of the passing touchdowns on his four receptions for 47 yards. He is the leading scorer for the wide receivers. The Cardinals drafted Isabella with the 2.30 pick out of U. Mass over the next two draftees – D.K. Metcalf and Diontae Johnson. Isabella ran a 4.31/40 at the NFL Combine. He only caught nine passes as a rookie but is starting to flex his ability. Notable too is that the Cardinals schedule will prompt more passing at Carolina, at NY Jets, at Dallas and then hosting Seattle.
  5. QB Nick Foles (CHI) – The Bears made the switch to Nick Foles and why not? They can always switch back to Mitchell Trubisky but the quarterback has been a weak spot in the offense since Trubisky was drafted. The Bears have a tougher schedule for the next three weeks – Colts, Buccaneers and then at the Panthers. If Foles can still look like the better option by Week 7, the schedule lightens up significantly. The Bears offense should become more productive in the second half of the season.
  6. RB Damien Harris (NE) – I know, you’re happy to get James White back this week. Maybe you got lucky last week with Rex Burkhead. Or maybe you wince every time you start Sony Michel because the waiver wire is just a barren echo-chamber in your league. Well – welcome back Damien Harris!Recall that he was the running back with the hype in training camp before he broke his hand and went on injured reserve. He just came off of IR and is back to practice. The Pats are also using UDFA J.J. Taylor who ran 11 times for 43 yards last week. Take time to look at the Pats’ boxscore to see what happened for Week 4 with the backfield. It may send you running in the other direction, but you may see Harris join the gang.

Report: Packers releasing WR Darrius Shepherd

The Packers are releasing WR Darrius Shepherd during roster cutdowns on Saturday.

Unlike last summer, a strong training camp wasn’t enough to get Darrius Shepherd back onto the Green Bay Packers roster.

According to Bill Huber of SI.com, the Packers are releasing Shepherd on Saturday.

An undrafted free agent from North Dakota State who was signed as a tryout player, Shepherd impressed during training camp last summer and made the initial 53-man roster. He played in six regular-season games but struggled, especially during a Monday night game against the Detroit Lions, and was eventually released, only to return on the practice squad and remain in Green Bay for the rest of the season.

Shepherd caught one pass for one yard and returned nine kickoffs for 149 yards and two punts for -9 yards. He dropped one pass, resulting in an interception, and lost a fumble.

The Packers are cutting both Shepherd and Jake Kumerow, suggesting a makeover is coming at the bottom of the receiver depth chart to start the 2020 season.

Shepherd could return on the practice squad as the sixth or seventh receiver.
