On3 expert predicts Auburn will flip three-star lineman from Tennessee

Three-star defensive lineman Derrion Smith called his recent visit to Auburn “one of the best college visits I have had.”

The Auburn Tigers may be flipping another recruit from an SEC rival.

Three-star defensive lineman and Tennessee commit [autotag]Darrion Smith[/autotag] was on the Plains for Auburn’s thrilling win over No. 19 Texas A&M on Saturday, and he described the visit as “one of the best college visits I have had.”

The Baltimore, Maryland native went on the describe the atmosphere within Jordan-Hare stadium during the Tigers four overtime victory in a recent interview with On3.

“The game, I don’t even know what type of words to put it in,” Smith said. “It was a thriller. It was definitely the craziest game I have been to so far.”

A consensus top 12 prospect from the state of Maryland, Smith committed to the Tennessee Volunteers in July of this year. That hasn’t stopped the high school senior from touring campuses across the country, and On3 expert Cole Pinkston felt confident enough after Smith’s latest visit to predict a flip to Auburn with “60 percent confidence.”

While Smith won’t make his official decision until early December, the Tigers seem like the likely favorite after last weekend, especially after the love the three-star recruit received from the Auburn family.

“The family, how close everybody is. Not even just the coaches, but the town,” said Smith. “People were just coming up to me. It’s different. I’ve never had that before. It’s definitely very family oriented.”

If Auburn can flip the talented pass-rusher, Hugh Freeze and his staff would improve on what already is a top-five recruiting class in the nation. With plenty of other recruits up in the air, it is feasible the Tigers could end the signing period with one of their best recruiting classes in program history.

Ohio State football misses out on 2025 defensive lineman

Ohio State misses out on 2025 defensive lineman #GoBucks

Ohio State football has been working hard to finalize the 2025 class, but one target has slipped away. The Buckeyes submitted an offer to a three-star defensive lineman from the state of Maryland in Darrion Smith, but he has elected to commit to an SEC school.

The Baltimore native recently announced his intentions to play for Tennessee after taking his third visit in four months to Knoxville. The most recent visit, which took place during the program’s Big Orange Weekend recruiting event, was apparently the nail in the coffin.

At 6-foot, 2-inches and 265 pounds, it is easy to see why the Buckeyes wanted to add Smith to the fold, but despite making his final two schools, Ohio State just couldn’t close the deal. There is still time for him to flip his commitment, but it is pretty late in the cycle to expect anything different.

2025 defensive lineman Darrion Smith commits to Vols

2025 defensive lineman Darrion Smith commits to Vols.

2025 three-star defensive lineman prospect Darrion Smith committed to Tennessee on Tuesday.

Smith is 6-foot-2, 265-pounds and from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland.

Smith ranks as the No. 650 prospect in the class of 2025. He ranks as the No. 69 defensive lineman and No. 18 player in Maryland, according to 247Sports.

Tennessee offered a scholarship to Smith on Dec. 15, 2022.

Smith unofficially visited the Vols on July 27.

Tennessee has 21 commitments in its 2025 recruiting class: Quarterback George MacIntyre, defensive lineman Ethan Utley, tight end Jack Vandorselaer, cornerback Dylan Lewis, running back Justin Baker, wide receiver Joakim Dodson, cornerback Tyler Redmond, safety Sidney Walton, wide receiver Radarious Jackson, offensive lineman Antoni Kade Ogumoro, edge Jayden Loftin, offensive lineman Nic Moore, defensive lineman Charles House, offensive lineman Douglas Utu, cornerback Tre Poteat, edge Mariyon Dye, wide receiver Travis Smith Jr., linebacker Christian Gass and safety Lagonza Hayward, tight end Da’Saahn Brame and Smith.

2025 DL Darrion Smith lands Oklahoma offer

Oklahoma extend an offer earlier this week to 2025 prospect Darrion Smith, a defensive line prospect out of Baltimore, Maryland.

Oklahoma is banking on their 2024 coup of defensive linemen to be historic. If Oklahoma can pull off what they are attempting to do by landing six top 150 defensive linemen, the Sooners will ride into the SEC with a tidal wave of momentum.

While the 2024 class is the immediate task at hand, the seeds have to be sewn for whatever the follow-up will be.

In this case, the 2025 class may not be as deep along the defensive line as the 2024 group, but there are still some highly talented defenders.

One of those 2025 defensive line prospects that has caught the eye of Todd Bates is 2025 DL prospect Darrion Smith.

Smith, a defensive lineman out of Baltimore, Maryland, stands 6-foot-3 and 260 pounds. He plays inside and out for St. Frances Academy but looks like a prime candidate to slide inside and eventually play 3-technique in college.

Smith is being recruited by a bevy of Big 10 schools like Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and the home state school Maryland Terrapins. Oklahoma’s offer is the first from any Big 12 school. The most recent Sooner to hail from Maryland is Oklahoma’s likely No. 1 option at wide receiver this year, [autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag].

Bates has a level of comfort recruiting that area of the country. Bates led the charge for the Clemson Tigers to land the No. 1 prospect in the 2020 recruiting class,  Bryan Bresee. A defensive tackle, Breese was a first round pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

The Tigers currently have eight commits for the 2024 class and the class is ranked as the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. Kelly and the Tigers are currently preparing for the Citrus Bowl against the Purdue Boilermakers on Jan. 2nd.
