49ers 2023 rookie report card is mostly useless at halfway point

The #49ers rookie report card is … bare.

The 49ers didn’t pick until late in the third round of the 2023 draft. It didn’t seem like a big deal considering they still walked away with a nine-player class that had a chance to fill a couple of key needs.

There was never a realistic possibility the 49ers’ rookie class had a wide swath of contributors. However, the early returns from that group can’t even be labeled as “not promising” because the reality is a vast majority of the players haven’t had any chance to make a real contribution.

We went through the rookie class and dished out “grades” for their first half performances. It won’t take long to notice a pattern:

Update on 49ers injured reserve list after Week 6

Here’s what the #49ers injured reserve list looks like with a third of the season down:

The 49ers through six weeks have avoided any major injuries, leaving their injured reserve list much less active than it’s been in recent years.

Cornerback Samuel Womack is the only player who’s gone on IR since the season began., and with six weeks down San Francisco has a couple players eligible to come off of injured lists who still haven’t been activated.

Here’s a quick rundown of what the 49ers’ injured reserve and physically unable to perform lists look like heading into Week 7:

No surprise: 4 49ers out of 1st training camp practice

These 4 #49ers missed the team’s first practice of training camp:

The 49ers on Wednesday began their on-field preparations for the 2023 season without four players, although there weren’t any surprises among the absences.

Quarterback Brock Purdy missed Wednesday’s session as part of his new throwing schedule. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said he’ll be on a truncated practice program for the first couple weeks of camp while he continues rehabbing from offseason surgery on his throwing elbow.

Defensive end Nick Bosa is holding out while he continues negotiating his long-term extension. The team officially placed him on the reserve/did not report list Wednesday according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero. Bosa isn’t expected to take the field until he has a new deal in place.

Punter Mitch Wishnowsky was out while he nurses a back injury that landed him on the non-football injury list. 49ers general manager John Lynch on Tuesday told reporters the team isn’t going to add another punter because they’re not concerned about his status long-term.

The final player out of Wednesday’s session was rookie cornerback Darrell Luter Jr., who was placed on the PUP list with a knee injury. Lynch said Luter has a bone bruise after hyperextending his knee late in the team’s offseason program.

With the 49ers still easing into camp, Christian McCaffrey sat out of team drills. Head coach Kyle Shanahan after practice indicated the day off for the star RB was scheduled and part of a plan to get McCaffrey to the regular season healthy.

49ers select CB Darrell Luter with Dolphins’ traded pick No. 155

Miami sent this pick for RB Jeff Wilson.

The Miami Dolphins entered this weekend with only four total draft picks for the 2023 selection meeting, due to picks being forfeited and a number of trades.

One of those selections, pick No. 155, was sent to the San Francisco 49ers at the 2022 trade deadline for running back Jeff Wilson. Wilson rushed for 392 yards and three touchdowns on 4.7 yards per carry during his eight games with the Dolphins last year before re-signing on a two-year deal this offseason.

The 49ers, with that fifth-round pick, selected South Alabama cornerback Darrell Luter. Miami already added a talented cornerback to a deep room earlier in this draft, so if they were to have this pick, they probably wouldn’t use it on Luter.

However, with holes still on the roster, they could’ve used it on another prospect that could help in 2023 and beyond.

With Wilson entering the next season as the second running back on the depth chart, Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel would likely rather have him than a fifth-round prospect.

South Alabama CB Darrell Luter met virtually with Cardinals

Luter is one of a few cornerbacks the Cardinals have met with this offseason.

The Cardinals have had contact with many cornerback prospects in this draft cycle. One is South Alabama cornerback Darrell Luter.

According to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, the Cardinals were one of many teams to meet with Luter virtually.

Luter is 6 feet tall and weighed 189 pounds at the NFL combine. He ran the 40 in 4.46 seconds, posted a 6.90-second three-cone and had a 40.5-inch vertical leap.

Last season for South Alabama, he had 42 tackles, half a tackle for loss, an interception and seven pass breakups.

He played outside cornerback in college.

He is projected as a Day 3 selection at best.
