The Atlanta Falcons announced a few roster moves on Saturday afternoon, but the most notable is the return of veteran cornerback Darqueze Dennard from the injured reserve list.

Dennard went down with a hamstring injury during the second half of the team’s Week 3 loss to the Chicago Bears. After designating him to return last week, the Falcons are finally getting their most experienced cornerback back.

Atlanta also placed CB Jordan Miller on injured reserve, while flexing LB Edmond Robinson and DE Pita Taumoepenu to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

In the three games Dennard was active this season, he recorded 16 tackles (10 solo), three passes defended and one interception.

Falcons cornerback Darqueze Dennard has been designated to return from the injured reserve list, the team announced on Monday morning. This means Dennard, who has been out with a hamstring injury, must be activated within 21 days, but is free to practice with the team.

Dennard went down after making an impressive interception against the Chicago Bears in Week 3. The Falcons’ secondary has been getting healthier in recent weeks, and Dennard’s potential return would be a huge boost in the team’s Week 9 matchup against the Denver Broncos if he’s activated.

Raheem Morris says CB Darqueze Dennard is close to returning

Morris said Dennard is “getting close” to coming back, as reported by Jason Butt of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The Atlanta Falcons’ secondary has gotten very few breaks this season, but things could be looking up. Head coach Raheem Morris gave an update on the status of nickel CB Darqueze Dennard, who’s eligible to return this week from the injured reserve list after sitting out the previous three games.

Morris said Dennard is “getting close” to coming back, as reported by Jason Butt of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution below.

Prior to leaving the Falcons’ Week 3 loss to the Chicago Bears with a hamstring injury, Dennard was playing well. He had just come down with a potentially game-sealing interception, but exited the game before the Bears came back to win.

Dennard would be a welcome addition to Atlanta’s secondary, which has been getting healthier in recent weeks. We’ll see if he can practice this week in preparation for Sunday’s matchup with the Detroit Lions (2-3).

Instead, Dennard left the game with a hamstring injury. The team reported on Tuesday afternoon that Dennard will be placed on the injured reserve list.

The Falcons were already extremely thin at cornerback with A.J. Terrell on the league’s reserve/COVID-19 list and Kendall Sheffield yet to suit up this season due to a foot injury.

Terrell can return in three weeks, as reported by ESPN’s Vaughn McClure below.

Atlanta (0-3) takes on Green Bay (3-0) in Week 4 on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

Bears WR Allen Robinson isn’t happy about his overturned TD

The Bears had two touchdowns that were negated in the second half, including Allen Robinson’s 21-yard score. And he’s not happy.

The Chicago Bears have pulled out some close victories to start the 2020 season, their latest coming against the Atlanta Falcons — a 30-26 win — on Sunday.

It was a game where there were several questionable calls that affected the Bears, including two Chicago touchdowns that were negated in the second half.

One of those belonged to receiver Allen Robinson, who had himself a day with 10 receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown. With 6:29 left in the third quarter, Nick Foles found Robinson for a 21-yard strike in the right corner of the end zone. It was another contested situation, where Robinson has shined since joining the Bears. Only, this one didn’t go his way.

Both Robinson and Falcons cornerback Darqueze Dennard had control of the ball before Dennard ripped it away from Robinson. But given Robinson had possession of the ball — and the tiebreaker goes to the receiver — everyone believed the touchdown would stand. Only it didn’t.

It was a play that upset Bears fans everywhere. And Robinson wasn’t happy about the call either, as he let reporters know exactly how he felt after the game.

The play was initially ruled a touchdown, which means that there would’ve needed to be visual evidence to overturn it. So why was it overturned?

“When we look at it, we have to start with what is the ruling on the field,” NFL senior vice president of officiating Al Riveron told reporters. “We can see that it is clear that the process of the catch is not over. Since the process of the catch is not over, the defender still has a right to the ball. And we see that the defender does get the ball and come up with it. Therefore, we reversed it because we had clear and obvious visual evidence that the process of the catch was not over. We changed the ruling to an interception.”

But given that it was a 50-50 ball with both Robinson and Dennard having possession, the rule states that the receiver gets the ball, right?

“Again, he has to complete the process of a catch,” Riveron said. “And we had clear and obvious evidence that he does not complete the process of a catch.”

It’s a call that will be debated, but it doesn’t matter. Because, in the end, the Bears were able to come away with the win and keep their undefeated record alive.

The story about the Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons game today will largely be around another historic collapse by Atlanta as Nick Foles came in for Mitch Trubisky to lead the Bears to the win. However, there is another story to come out of the game regarding a former Michigan State standout.

In the third quarter, former Spartan cornerback Darqueze Dennard recorded his first interception as an Atlanta Falcon in the redzone off Nick Foles. It looks like it’s going to be a touchdown but Dennard managed to wrestle the ball away.

Dennard says players around the NFL speak highly of Dan Quinn

New Falcons CB Darqueze Dennard said that Quinn has a great reputation around the league

Despite the Falcons’ disastrous 1-7 start to the 2019 season, there was almost no drama surrounding the team. This lack of locker-room discord can be attributed to a number of different things, from the team’s veteran leaders, to the coaching staff’s consistent message.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn isn’t considered one of the elite coaches in the league, but his five years in Atlanta have brought stability to the team along with a Super Bowl appearance.

Quinn rarely gets down on his players and usually takes the blame for any shortcomings, which has undoubtedly earned the respect of the team. New Falcons CB Darqueze Dennard said that Quinn has a great reputation around the league, as tweeted by Jason Butt below.

When players leave in free agency or get released, it’s common to hear negative comments about their former coaches. Quinn was well-liked as the Seahawks defensive coordinator and apparently is highly-regarded by most former players.

This is just one factor that could potentially help the team this season as the Falcons deal with a bizarre training camp without any preseason games. The team does still have a veteran quarterback, All-Pro wide receiver and a hungry, talented group desperate to get back the Super Bowl.

It’s now or never for Atlanta.
