5 important position battles to follow at Seahawks 2023 training camp

Here are five important position battles we will be keeping a close eye on throughout training camp and into the preseason.

The Seattle Seahawks are scheduled to begin their 2023 training camp practices about three weeks from now, on Wednesday July 26. This time of year is all about finding out which players are best-suited to start at positions with depth charts that have not yet been decided.

With that in mind, here are five important position battles we will be keeping a close eye on throughout training camp and into the preseason.

ESPN ranks Seahawks wide receiver unit best in NFC after the draft

By adding JSN, Seattle’s receiver room is about as good as it gets at this level.

There’s no such thing as a perfect draft class, but the Seahawks checked all the boxes they needed to in the 2023 NFL draft. Our favorite pick of the bunch was at No. 20 overall: wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who is widely considered the top receiver prospect in this class. By adding Smith-Njigba’s skillset to the formidable tandem of Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf, Seattle’s receiver room is about as good as it gets at this level.

If you happen to need proof, ask Mike Clay at ESPN. His updated wide receiver unit rankings after the draft show Seattle’s is the best in the NFC and second in the entire league behind only the Bengals.

Fans can take this top three to the bank. Whether it becomes a truly dominant, league-best unit will depend on whether or not the extremely athletic second-year wideout Dareke Young can give them a legitimate No. 4 option.

Seahawks: 7 sleepers to watch at 2022 training camp

One week from today the Seattle Seahawks will report to training camp.

One week from today the Seattle Seahawks will report to training camp.

The theme of this offseason has been one of change. While the team might look much the same on paper compared to last year, Seattle went through a revolution in leadership. From sending their franchise quarterback away to totally upending their defensive coaching staff, there’s been a lot of shakeups around the VMAC. In theory, that should create opportunities for younger players and undrafted free agents to make their mark as this team begins a new chapter. Here are seven sleepers to keep an eye on during camp.

John Schneider explains why Seahawks traded down on Day 3 of the draft

Apparently they didn’t want to have to choose between taking Rutgers WR Bo Melton or Lenoir-Rhyne receiver Dareke Young in the seventh round.

The Seattle Seahawks only made one trade during the 2022 NFL draft – moving down from one of their spots in the fifth round to add another seventh-round selection later on.

Yesterday, general manager John Schneider was a guest on ESPN 710 AM in Seattle and explained why the team decided to make that trade down. Apparently they didn’t want to have to choose between taking Rutgers WR Bo Melton or Lenoir-Rhyne receiver Dareke Young in the seventh round.

“We did the one where we traded back and were able to pick up that extra seventh, which was huge for us because we really had those two receivers staring at us down there that our staff really wanted to work with and that our scouts were obviously very high on. So to get it where we didn’t have to pick between one of the two and be able to grab both of them was a really big deal for us. I think you guys are gonna be really impressed with these two young men.”

Melton was a very productive slot receiver in college and should project as the team’s top kick returner heading into 2022. He’s considered one of the top steals in this draft class. Meanwhile, Young has the same athletic profile as D.K. Metcalf but his dual-threat game more resembles Deebo Samuel’s.

Seahawks star Tyler Lockett welcomes both rookie wide receivers

Lockett has spent the weekend vocally welcoming every new rookie to the team.

The Seattle Seahawks have been enjoying a theme of “two’s” in the 2022 NFL Draft. Seattle has selected a pair of tackles, two pass rushers, a duo of cornerbacks, and now they have ended the draft with two wide receivers.

The Seahawks are very top-heavy at the position with the likes of DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett as the top options. But in the NFL, there is no such thing as too much depth and this team is no exception.

Lockett has spent the weekend vocally welcoming every new rookie to the team, and the receivers to close the weekend are among them.

It is the dawn of a new era in Seattle without Russell Wilson. The Seahawks no longer have a quarterback capable of single-handily carrying the offense by himself, regardless of who the supporting cast is. Loading up the skill positions for Geno Smith or Drew Lock to work with is more than prudent.

Also, without Wilson, the Seahawks no longer have a true face of the franchise. The 12th Man will certainly be pleased to see one of the best, and most beloved, players on the team taking a more vocal approach to being a leader.

Seahawks: College highlights for 7th-round receiver Dareke Young

Take a look at the college highlights for Lenoir-Rhyne wide receiver Dareke Young, selected by the Seattle Seahawks at No. 233 overall.

The Seattle Seahawks selected back-to-back wide receivers in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft, adding Lenoir-Rhyne’s Dareke Young with their final pick – No. 233 overall.

Here’s a compilation of Young’s college highlights.

Seahawks double down again at WR in Round 7 of the 2022 NFL draft

With their final two picks in the draft they hammered home that theme.

The Seattle Seahawks came into the 2022 NFL draft with a clear plan: ignore the mediocre quarterback class and focus on loading up on all the other premium positions. With their final two picks in the draft they hammered home that theme.

At No. 229 overall Seattle selected Rutgers receiver Bo Melton, another 5-foot-11 burner who will have to fight for playing time as part of a loaded wideout room. With their next pick, the Seahawks went right back to the wide receiver well, taking Lenoir-Rhyne’s Dareke Young at 233. Young (6-foot-2, 224 pounds) has a different build but outside of D.K. Metcalf he’s the only truly-big receiver on the roster. Together, they help complete the picture at a critical position.

For those counting at home, the Seahawks were able to double up at:

OT: Charles Cross, Abraham Lucas
CB: Coby Byrant, Tariq Woolen
EDGE: Boye Mafe, Tyreke Smith
WR: Bo Melton, Dareke Young

That’s all of the most-important positions in the modern game outside QB.

Results inevitably vary with most prospects, but Seattle went in with an excellent process and stuck to it until the very end.

Seahawks pick Lenoir-Rhyne WR Dareke Young at No. 233 overall

With their final pick in the 2022 NFL draft, the Seattle Seahawks have selected Lenoir-Rhyne wide receiver Dareke Young at No. 233 overall.

With their final pick in the 2022 NFL draft, the Seattle Seahawks have selected Lenoir-Rhyne wide receiver Dareke Young at No. 233 overall.

Young has a very different build than the last receiver Seattle drafted – Rutgers’ Bo Melton just a handful of picks before. At 6-foot-2, 224 pounds he’s much closer to D.K. Metcalf’s size and profile than Tyler Lockett’s.

Hailing from a small school, you won’t find a whole lot of highlight videos or scouting reports on Young. However, he was able to put up 515 yards and scored eight touchdowns last season.
