Sixers send Danuel House Jr., 2nd-round pick to Pistons in a deal

The Philadelphia 76ers are sending Danuel House Jr. and a second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons in a deal.

The Philadelphia 76ers are not done dealing quite yet. They made a big move to acquire Buddy Hield from the Indiana Pacers, but seem to be setting themselves up for future moves.

The Sixers sent Danuel House Jr. and their 2024 second-round pick via the New York Knicks to the Detroit Pistons in a deal. House averaged 4.2 points and 1.7 rebounds while shooting 30% in 34 games with four starts for the Sixers this season. The Sixers are getting a top-55 protected second-round pick in 2028 from Detroit.

The deal moves Philadelphia below the luxury tax threshold, enabling it to go out and sign someone such as Kyle Lowry should he be bought out by the Charlotte Hornets after the deadline. They create a $4.3 million traded player exception with this deal.

House will look for a fresh start with another team. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Thursday afternoon that the Pistons had already waived House.

If Philadelphia were to get somebody like Lowry, he would be a big get: another ballhandler to help the team get into its sets offensively.

Joel Embiid, Sixers give love to Danuel House Jr. after win over Hornets

Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers give love to Danuel House Jr. after a win over the Charlotte Hornets.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Philadelphia 76ers picked up an ugly 97-89 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday night thanks to the spark provided by Danuel House Jr. off the bench.

Joel Embiid had yet another big game: 33 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, but it was House who gave Philadelphia a boost with nine points, three rebounds and a big block off the bench. It was an important effort for him on a night the Sixers needed it.

“Man, D-House has been great,” Embiid said after the win. “Whenever his name is called, he always shows up. He’s probably a guy, you know, I’m not part of the decision-making, but he’s definitely showing that he wants to do more and he’s been doing it. He’s been great.”

House scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter and he had an emphatic block on the break that essentially sealed a win for the Sixers over a pesky Hornets team.

“I think just his physicality defensively, we need that,” Embiid added. “The energy that he brings, cutting, rebounder, picking up full court, putting pressure on the defense. Even off the drive and kicking, knocking down big shots. He’s been great.”

Coach Nick Nurse turned to House due to the nature of Philadelphia’s depth in this one. The Sixers were without De’Anthony Melton, Robert Covington, and Patrick Beverley.

“I thought he was really good,” Nurse said of House. “Obviously, he played a really long stretch there to end it. He just was guarding. He made a couple of tough baskets. He knocked a bunch of — he got a bunch of deflections and knocked the ball away a bit. It was great for him.”

On the second night of a back-to-back, the Sixers needed somebody to step up. It turned out to be House.

“You got to find somebody,” Nurse finished. “Some X factor on nights like this or back-to-backs, you know, somebody’s got to come in and provide some sparks and he certainly did that at a high level.”

Philadelphia looked sluggish all night, in this instance, it was House who provided a difference.

“Spark, energy, effort,” said House. “Come out and just impact the game anyway, anyhow.”

Sixers happy with production they receive from Danuel House Jr.

The Philadelphia 76ers are happy with the production they have received from Danuel House Jr. off their bench.

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers were in need of an energy boost on Friday when they played host to the Toronto Raptors. They had a slow start and trailed by as many as 15 in the first half.

The Sixers recovered for a 121-111 win thanks to the brilliance of Tobias Harris, Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, but Philadelphia received a spark from Danuel House Jr.

House had only three points in 22:59 of playing time, but he was a plus-15. He made a big difference with his athleticism and defensive activity to help the Sixers walk away with their 20th win of the season.

“I thought House especially came in and just played really hard,” said coach Nick Nurse. “He was just running hard, rebounding hard, just fighting hard. I thought Cov (Robert Covington) started fighting. They weren’t perfect, but at least they raised the level I think of our fight and our compete.”

Despite being in and out of the rotation, House has continued to stay professional. The work that he puts in to stay ready and prepared for whenever his number is called is an important aspect of this group and the Sixers know it.

“He’s big time,” Maxey added of House. “He’s been around the league for a long time. So he knows how to stay professional know how to stay ready and what he did tonight and that other night, I think that was two nights ago, he guarded Anthony Edwards, he guarded a lot of other people that night. So he’s been huge.”

This isn’t the first time House has stepped in and given the Sixers a boost when they needed it. He was fantastic in Philadelphia’s Game 5 win over the Boston Celtics in the second round of the playoffs this past spring, and Philadelphia knows he can be relied upon.

“We know he’s a guy that plays in the playoffs,” Maxey added. “Last year, he was big in the playoffs. So we know he’s always going to be ready, and we appreciate him for that.”

Sixers to be without Danuel House Jr. in road matchup vs. Thunder

The Philadelphia 76ers will be without Danuel House Jr. when they take on the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday.

The Philadelphia 76ers are already missing key wing player Kelly Oubre Jr., who is out due to a rib fracture he suffered on Nov. 11 when he was struck by a vehicle.

The Sixers have relied on their depth to make up for Oubre’s absence. They have turned to Nic Batum and Danuel House Jr.; both have stepped up when the Sixers called.

While Batum is set to go, the Sixers will be without House due to a left quad bruise. He’s averaging 3.8 points and shooting 41.9% from the floor off the bench for Philadelphia.

With House out for the Sixers, one has to assume they will turn to Jaden Springer to give the team production off the bench.

Tipoff with the Thunder is set for 5 p.m. EST from the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City.

Nick Nurse, Sixers highlight Joel Embiid’s playmaking vs. Hawks

Nick Nurse and the Philadelphia 76ers highlight Joel Embiid’s playmaking after a win over the Atlanta Hawks.

Philadelphia 76ers star big man Joel Embiid is known for being one of the elite scorers in the league, but his playmaking to begin the 2023-24 season has been impressive.

In Friday’s 126-116 win over the Atlanta Hawks, Embiid had 32 points. Though that is the stat most will care about, the big fella had eight assists. He was picking the Hawks apart all night, and he’s averaging a career-high 6.0 assists through 12 games.

“I think the first part is that he really wants to do that, right?” coach Nick Nurse told reporters. “He understands he needs to do that to help our team, so that’s at least like the first point that he’s willing to do it. The second part of it is the guy’s got to make the right reads, cut, and do the right things.”

In the loss to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, Embiid was not making much of an impact with his passing. Boston was double-teaming him, but there wasn’t a lot of off-ball movement from the others. That wasn’t the case against the Hawks as Embiid did what he was supposed to do.

“The other night against Boston, we just weren’t doing it,” Nurse added. “One of the two things we weren’t doing that impacted that game. So we talked a lot about it today (Friday) at shootaround. We worked on it a lot today at shootaround and the guys took it forward.”

Danuel House Jr., who had 14 points off the bench, was a beneficiary of Embiid’s passing ability. House Jr. was cutting off the ball and it allowed him to get a few easy buckets.

“He’s willing to pass, which he’d been willing to pass, but this year he really buying in,” House Jr. told reporters. “He’s offering people suggestions when he sees a double team ‘Hey, go to this area because if you go to this area, I can get it to you.’ So he’s communicating a lot. He’s not worried about scoring 50 every night. He wants to win.”

Danuel House Jr. receives praise for effort after Sixers beat Hawks

Danuel House Jr. received praise for his strong play after the Philadelphia 76ers knocked off the Atlanta Hawks on the road.

The Philadelphia 76ers needed a big boost on Friday night when they took on the Atlanta Hawks on the road. Missing Nic Batum and Kelly Oubre Jr., the Sixers needed somebody to step up and produce off the bench.

That somebody was Danuel House Jr. The veteran out of Texas A&M provided 14 big points off the bench and made plays on both ends of the floor in a 126-116 win over the Hawks on the road in the in-season tournament.

“First of all, obviously, I thought both played extremely hard and impacted the game,” Nurse told reporters after the win. “We kind of decided pregame, Jaden’s (Springer) had a couple good moments. We kind of decided pregame again with a with an explosive guard backcourt that we were facing that we maybe would need his defensive impact in the game and same with House.”

Both House and Springer did a more than solid job of containing that Hawks backcourt of Trae Young and Dejounte Murry.

“I think we told them they were coming early and that kinda gave them some confidence, but they just played the game,” Nurse added. “Let it come to them. Obviously, they were sending people towards Joel (Embiid) mostly, right? And those guys did a good job of finding the open areas and benefited. Either Jaden got the cuts around the rim and House kind of got the kick outs for 3 which is kind of hopefully one of those two things is open when they’re double teaming.”

For House, his playing time has been up and down in Philadelphia. He was in and out of the rotation in the 2022-23 season and that has been the case so far this season. He has remained patient and he has been the ultimate professional.

House told NBC Sports Philadelphia after the win:

It’s a marathon. It’s not a sprint. I made it eight years by being patient and pacing myself, and just waiting till the opportunity presents itself and going out there and showcase what I’m capable of doing. Today is just a stepping stone from here on our for our team. The coaches talked to me, they wanted me to be a little bit more aggressive, and a little bit more assertive. So this game I came out, I didn’t think about it too much, I played with confidence, and then the game came to me naturally.

The Sixers head to Brooklyn to take on the Nets on Sunday afternoon.

Injury report for Joel Embiid, Sixers vs. Hawks in preseason finale

Here is the latest injury report for Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers as they take on the Atlanta Hawks in the preseason finale.

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers are preparing for the preseason finale on Friday when they take on the Atlanta Hawks. They seek one final look at how the team will look under new coach Nick Nurse.

The Sixers have not seen Joel Embiid and Furkan Korkmaz in the preseason, and Danuel House Jr. has played one exhibition game. It appears all three will be ready to go in this one.

Per a team spokesperson, the Sixers are expected to have all three players return on Friday. Embiid was under the weather and missed Philadelphia’s preseason contest on Monday. Korkmaz has been dealing with a leg strain, and House Jr. has had right knee soreness.

As for James Harden, The Beard is still not with the team due to a personal matter. Therefore, he will not play against the Hawks on Friday.

The Sixers and the Hawks will tip off at 7 p.m. EDT from the Wells Fargo Center on Friday.

Sixers to be without Joel Embiid, James Harden, 2 others vs. Nets

The Philadelphia 76ers will be without Joel Embiid, James Harden, and 2 other players in their preseason matchup with the Brooklyn Nets.

The Philadelphia 76ers continue their preseason schedule on Monday at the Brooklyn Nets, but they will do so without some major pieces.

Joel Embiid, who was originally expected to play in this game per coach Nick Nurse, will sit out his third straight preseason game. James Harden, Furkan Korkmaz and Danuel House Jr. are also out. The reason for Harden’s absence goes without saying. Korkmaz is dealing with a leg strain, and House Jr. is dealing with knee soreness.

It is peculiar to see Embiid not play in this one. Considering this is a new system and a new scheme, it would benefit him and the Sixers to have him play to prepare him for the coming season.

The Sixers will take on the Nets at 7:30 p.m. EDT on Monday. After the Brooklyn game, they will host the Atlanta Hawks on Friday in their final preseason game. Harden is expected to play against Atlanta, and one has to assume Embiid plays in at least that one to prepare for the season.

Player grades: Tyrese Maxey plays well, Sixers fall to Celtics in preseason

Tyrese Maxey plays well, but the Philadelphia 76ers fall to the Boston Celtics in the preseason opener.

The Philadelphia 76ers began the preseason schedule on Sunday with a visit to where their 2022-23 season ended: the TD Garden. The Sixers took on the Boston Celtics with a lot less on the line as both teams look to prepare for the upcoming season.

The Sixers played without Joel Embiid, James Harden, De’Anthony Melton, and Furkan Korkmaz as coach Nick Nurse wanted to see what he has in other pieces. He knows what he has in Tyrese Maxey as the young guard went to work early and often in this one to the tune of 24 points. The Sixers did drop this one to the Celtics 114-106.

Tobias Harris added 13 points and seven rebounds, Patrick Beverley had 12 points, Jaden Springer added 14 points and five rebounds, and Kelly Oubre Jr. had six and four rebounds.

Here are the player grades following the preseason loss:

Sixers’ Danuel House Jr. explains difference between Nick Nurse, Doc Rivers

Philadelphia 76ers guard Danuel House Jr. explains the difference in coaching styles between Nick Nurse and Doc Rivers.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Philadelphia 76ers are getting ready to begin a new season under the guidance of a new voice. Nick Nurse takes over as the team’s head coach after three seasons of Doc Rivers’ leadership.

Rivers was a very successful coach who helped change a great lot in Philadelphia. However, the Sixers were unable to get past the second round of the playoffs. They were ousted in the conference semifinals in all three seasons under Rivers.

Nurse enters a situation similar to the Toronto Raptors when he took over. It was a team that had issues getting over the hump in the postseason and was looking to finally break through.

Two days in training camp, Danuel House Jr. explained what a Nurse practice has been like.

“Great,” said House Jr. “I mean, breaking everything down, working with guys, taking his time teaching us new things, and giving us confidence. So it’s been great for the last, I would say, 48 hours for all of us.”

House Jr., in his second season in Philadelphia, was asked to describe the differences between the two coaches. The veteran out of Texas A&M went on to discuss what he views are two different coaching styles.

“It’s just a lot more selfless basketball,” House Jr. explained. “It’s not so much of two guys having a ball. Doc is two guys, ball dominant. Nick Nurse is everybody play together. Everybody works with each other. Help, cuts, get your brother open shots. You can see the difference night and day.”

It is true the Sixers ran a lot of pick-and-roll under Rivers, and why not? Joel Embiid and James Harden nearly ran it to perfection.

Under Nurse, there will be far more free-flowing offense, and he wants to get everybody a chance to contribute. It will be interesting to see how the Sixers handle themselves under Nurse.
