Spring Football: A dozen intriguing quarterback battles

These quarterback battles have regional editor Patrick Conn’s attention this spring.

With the calendar turning to March, you know what that means. No, we aren’t talking about March Madness, at least not this time. Spring football is getting underway across the nation.

As always, the quarterbacks will get most of the headlines and that is no different here. Plenty of top names will be absent from the college football landscape in 2023. Stetson Bennett, C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, and Anthony Richardson are among the signal-callers leaving for the NFL.

Replacing each quarterback will be no small task. We also saw plenty of movement with the transfer portal setting up some huge position battles. With that being said I put together a list of 12 battles that intrigue me.

We kick things off with the quarterback battle at Alabama between Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson.

Auburn set to host a five-star quarterback for a second time

Big-time quarterback is coming back to The Plains.

The hunt for the next quarterback for the Auburn Tigers is underway. Bryan Harsin and the staff are officially out on three of the top four quarterbacks.

Arch Manning is being heavily recruited by the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, and the Texas Longhorns. Manning is the No. 1 quarterback on the list. The No. 2 quarterback, Malachi Nelson has committed to the USC Trojans. The No. 4 quarterback, Nico Iamaleava recently listed his top five teams with Alabama and Tennessee Vols very much in the mix.

According to this report from 247Sports, the No. 3 quarterback in the country, Dante Moore Jr will make his second visit to the Plains.

The five-star quarterback from Detroit, Michigan, has been making the rounds on the recruiting trail. Moore won’t be the only highly-touted prospect to visit the Tigers after hosting a slew of recruits on Saturday. Other top recruits include five-star wide receiver Jalen Brown of Miami, Florida.

Getting in with Moore might be a tough sell given the other top programs in his pursuit but Harsin could sell the opportunity to play very early in his collegiate career. The LSU Tigers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Michigan Wolverines are among the other schools vying for his commitment.

Every quarterback that Auburn has offered for 2023

These quarterbacks in the 2023 cycle hold scholarship offers from Auburn.

The Auburn Tigers staff has been hitting the recruiting trails ahead of the spring football start date. One area of emphasis for head coach Bryan Harsin and offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau will be at quarterback.

The team added four-star signee Holden Geriner in the 2022 class and have a total of five quarterbacks on the roster.

  • Zach Calzada (Texas A&M Transfer)
  • TJ Finley
  • Robby Ashford (Oregon Transfer)
  • Dematrius Davis (2021 Signee)
  • Holden Geriner (2022 Signee)

The staff can’t rest on their laurels despite signing quarterbacks in back-to-back classes and adding two more in the transfer portal. Given the volatility of roster management in today’s game, the depth chart can be wiped in a moment’s instance.

The loser of the quarterback competition could opt to transfer out, leaving you with less experience at the position. As we look towards the 2022 college football season, there are plenty of notable quarterbacks being targeted to join Auburn.
