Former Patriot recalled Bill Belichick lesson after costly fumble in AFC title game

Danny Woodhead gave a shout out to Bill Belichick, following the Ravens’ costly fumble in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game

Bill Belichick’s tactics were praised by former New England Patriots running back Danny Woodhead in connection to a key play in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game between the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs.

After hauling in a pass, Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers ran for the goal line on the first play of the fourth quarter and dove for the end zone, reaching the ball out in the process. This was where things went awry, as Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed knocked the ball out of the receiver’s hands, and Trent McDuffie recovered it in the end zone.

Woodhead, who played three seasons for the Patriots, is no stranger to end zone reaches, having scored 15 touchdowns in his career, including 10 with New England. He recalled one important lesson from Belichick in a post on the X platform during Sunday’s game.

Unfortunately, Flowers had to learn the hard way with the fumble erasing a possible touchdown in the Ravens’ loss to the Chiefs. If anything, Sunday was a reminder of just how important fundamentals truly are.

39 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 39 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 39 jersey number

The New England Patriots have officially reached the 39-day mark in our countdown series to their 2023 regular season opener. Today, we’re listing every Patriots player that has ever worn the No. 39 jersey.

Fan-favorite running back Danny Woodhead is a name that many Patriots fans remember. The former undrafted free agent came to New England from the New York Jets and served as a reliable third-down option for quarterback Tom Brady and the Patriots offense.

He was just one of those special players that fit into the offense perfectly and consistently found ways to make plays.

However, one of the true forgotten Patriots on this list is former Los Angeles Rams All-Pro running back Steven Jackson. He made a pit stop in New England at the tail-end of his career and appeared in two games for the Patriots. It was an unlikely pairing that barely lasted a month.

Of course, Woodhead and Jackson weren’t the only ones to wear the number. Let’s take a look at every player throughout Patriots’ franchise history that has ever worn a No. 39 jersey (via Pro Football Reference).

Phil Mickelson is back on Twitter, and he thinks LIV golfers would dominate PGA Tour players in a Ryder Cup format match

PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf? With Tiger and Phil as captains?

Phil Mickelson is back on Twitter, and he’s bringing the hot takes.

In recent weeks, the six-time major champion has been more vocal on Twitter, interacting with fans and others over a variety of topics. On Thursday, following the opening round of the PIF Saudi International at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club in Saudi Arabia where Mickelson shot even par, he responded to former NFL star Danny Woodhead about an interesting topic.

Woodhead quoted a tweet that said if there was a Ryder Cup-style event between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf with Tiger Woods and Phil as captains, it would be the most watched golf event in history. Woodhead agreed, saying he was here for it.

Plenty of fans would be interested in that, too. Even Mickelson thinks it would be great.

But he doesn’t think it would be much of a competition.

So, what say you: Who would win in a Ryder Cup-style match between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf?

Danny Woodhead has hilarious response to Bill Belichick’s well-wishes

Danny Woodhead had a hilarious response to Bill Belichick’s well-wishes.

Former New England Patriots running back Danny Woodhead has traded his football cleats for golf clubs as he looks to qualify for the U.S. Open.

Woodhead advanced to the final qualifying rounds earlier this month. The U.S. Open is set to take place at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.

On Tuesday, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick offered his congratulations to Woodhead before the team began OTA’s.

The latter played three seasons with the Patriots, recording 1,199 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns during that timeframe. His best season came in 2010, when he carried the ball 97 times for 547 yards and five touchdowns.

In video captured by NBC Sports Boston’s Phil A. Perry, Belichick extended congratulations to his former running back. Woodhead responded to the video in hilarious fashion.

As the Patriots get ready to embark on the 2022 season, Woodhead is preparing for a major competition of his own.

Former NFL star Danny Woodhead advances at U.S. Open qualifier

He scored a touchdown in Super Bowl 46, now he’s one step closer to earning a spot on golf’s biggest stage.

Danny Woodhead caught passes from Tom Brady. He even played, and scored a touchdown, in Super Bowl 46. Now? Well, he’s trying his hand at a different sport.

The former New England Patriot played in a local U.S. Open qualifier at Omaha Country Club on Wednesday and posted an even-par 71, good enough for a third-place tie and a spot in final qualifying.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Woodhead tee it up in a USGA championship. He qualified and played in the 2021 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Chambers Bay.

“The Super Bowl was awesome to play in, whatever, but this is out of my comfort zone,” he said after qualifying alongside partner Michael Wilheim in 2020.

Although it’s no longer for touchdowns, his celebration game is still strong.

If you want a closer look at Woodhead’s game, he played a few rounds with the No Laying Up boys at Sweetens Cove.

Danny Woodhead is working towards the U. S. Open

Former New England Patriots running back Danny Woodhead advanced in local qualifying for the U. S. Open on Wednesday.

Woodhead shot an even-par 71 at Omaha Country Club. He earned one of the five final qualifying berths. If he fully advances through local qualifying, he will move on to the final qualifiers.

The US Open is being held in Brookline, Massachusetts on June 16-19th at The Country Club.

Woodhead spent the 2010-12 seasons with the Patriots. He carried the ball 250 times for 1,199 yards and 10 touchdowns in three seasons.

After enjoying a successful career on the gridiron, Woodhead appears to be forging a successful path on the links as well.

Ex-NFL RB Danny Woodhead is really good at golf and is a step closer to the U.S. Open

Whoa!

Hey, remember Danny Woodhead? Of course you do!

The former NFL running back played 10 years for teams including the then-San Diego Chargers, New England Patriots, New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens.

And now? He’s really good at golf. Like, he could make the U.S. Open good. A couple of years ago he qualified for U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, and now he’s advancing in U.S. Open qualifying, a step closer to maybe snagging a spot at The Country Club in Brookline.

Per Pro Football Talk, he “advanced in local qualifying for the U.S. Open on Wednesday. Woodhead shot an even-par 71 at Omaha Country Club to earn one of five final qualifying berths at the site.”

HUGE! Look at this!

Let’s see what happens next!

Two Huskers elected to Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame

A pair of former Cornhuskers have learned that they have earned their spots in the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame.

A pair of former Cornhuskers have learned that they have earned their spots in the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame. Wide Receiver Niles Paul and Kicker/Punter Alex Henery will join other recent inductees such as Super Bowl Champion Danny Woodhead, former Husker I-back Damon Benning, and current Nebraska football coach Scott Frost in the honor.

Niles Paul played at Omaha North High School before heading to Lincoln for college, where he was Parade All-American who caught 48 passes for 814 yards and 13 touchdowns in football. He wasn’t just known for his play on the football field either, he also excelled in basketball and track and field. Paul averaged a double-double his senior year in basketball and in track and field, he won four individual state titles in his junior season with championships in the 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles, 4x100m relay, and the 4x400m relay. He would repeat as the 110m hurdles champion his senior year.

He had 103 receptions for 1,532 yards and 5 touchdowns in four years at Nebraska and was second-team All-Big 12 in 2010. He currently sits 9th in all-time receiving yards for the Cornhuskers. Washington drafted him in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft as a Tight End and he spent eight years in the league with Washington, Jacksonville, and San Fransico before retiring from football in 2019.

Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

Alex Henery attended Omaha Burke High School before walking on to the Nebraska football team in 2006. He was a two-sport high school athlete, excelling in football and soccer. In four years at Nebraska, Henery was 193 of 194 kicking extra points and was 68 of 76 kicking field goals. In addition, he spent two years as the Cornhusker’s punter and averaged 42.2 yards per punt. The Lou Groza Award semi-finalist was also first-team All-American in 2010 while somehow being second-team All-Big 12 the same season (long-time Dallas Cowboy kicker Dan Bailey finished ahead of Henery for that honor).

However, Henery is best remembered for November 28th, 2008, when he made a 57-yard field in Lincoln to help defeat the Colorado Buffalos 40-31. He was eventually taken in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft but lost his job during training camp in 2014 to Cody “double doink” Parkey (ask Chicago Bears fans) and was released. Henery then caught on with the Lions but was released in October of 2014 after missing three field goals in a 17-14 loss against the Bills. After that, he never played in another NFL game.

The two former Huskers will be honored with the other athletes, coaches, officials, and contributors to Nebraska High School athletics on September 25th at Lincoln East High School.

Now obsessed with golf, former NFL player Danny Woodhead qualifies for U.S. Amateur Four-Ball at Chambers Bay

Now obsessed with golf, former NFL player Danny Woodhead has qualified for the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball next May at Chambers Bay.

Inside Danny Woodhead’s bedroom at his Nebraska home, there’s a patch of carpet completely ruined from repeated golf swings.

A fan-favorite after a successful decade in the National Football League that ended in 2017, the 35-year-old former running back now finds himself so obsessed with golf that his handicap has moved to the pro side of scratch and he’s ruining his house.

On Monday, Woodhead took a big step in his golf journey, qualifying with partner Mike Wilhelm for next year’s U.S. Amateur Four-Ball at Chambers Bay in Wisconsin.

“It’s as much fun as I’ve had in a long time,” said Woodhead of the successful qualifier at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Nebraska. “I’ve played amateur events in Nebraska for three years and it’s a thrill unlike anything I’ve done. Golf doesn’t come as easy as football for me. People are going to be like ‘yeah right’ but in some ways it’s almost cooler than some of the stuff I’ve done on the football field.”

Some of that stuff on the football field includes setting records in college and scoring a touchdown in Super Bowl XLVI for the New England Patriots alongside Tom Brady. Ever heard of them?

“The Super Bowl was awesome to play in, whatever, but this is out of my comfort zone,” he explained. That said, he’d still rather face his partner Mike after a bad hole than legendary coach Bill Belichick on the sidelines after a fumble.

While it’s a lot of golf these days for the retired running back, he also hosts the “Out of Nowhere” podcast with former NFL lineman Matt Slauson where they strive to tell the stories of athletes that fans haven’t heard yet. But back to golf.

Woodhead and Willhelm are both members at Omaha Country Club and have been playing together for three years. The two have a similar game and are comfortable together on the course, which bodes well for their scores.

“We can both go out and get some birdies. That’s what makes four-ball so fun. You can take a lot more chances than you’d usually take,” said Woodhead. “More than anything (Mike is) someone I really like to compete with because he cares about golf like I do, and I feel like not many people do.”

Golf on its own is fun, but the thrill of tournament competition is what drives Woodhead. He absolutely loves it. Every year since he retired he’s set a handicap goal for where he wants his game to be. He’s hit every goal he’s set. So what’s next?

“I always said ‘how sick would it be to play in one of the USGA events.’ Well now I’m going to,” said Woodhead. “So then it just goes to the next thing, hopefully I can get in one of the individual (USGA events).”

Doubted his entire career on the football field, Woodhead continually climbed to reach the NFL and produce at a high level for 10 years. So how much juice is still left in the tank? Plenty. And then some.

“I might be more competitive now than I was when I was playing. That’s what everyone wants to say but I feel like I’m just scratching the surface right now with golf.

“I’m going to get good. I don’t care how long it takes me, I will get good,” Woodhead continued. Consistency comes first. And experience.

It’s something he’s working on. The Nebraska native – who finished T-7 at the state golf association’s Freemont Invitational in July – plays three, maybe four times a week these days. Rarely on weekends. With four kids and a wife at home, Woodhead likes to keep that as family time. His handicap is important but family always comes first.

Woodhead and his wife celebrated their 12-year anniversary earlier this summer. His family’s support is admittedly a big reason for his growing success on the golf course that’ll be displayed for all to see next May at a course that hosted the U.S. Amateur in 2010 and the U.S. Open won by Jordan Spieth in 2015.

“Playing in a national championship as an amateur, that’s cool. I’m excited to experience it with Mike because we’re good buddies,” said Woodhead of next year’s trip to Chambers Bay and the Pacific Northwest.

“I’m not really that nervous because I do think, call me crazy, come May I’m going to be ready for it. I’m going to treat it like I’m freaking Tiger Woods playing in the Masters. I’m going to treat it so I’m playing my best golf then.”

Danny Woodhead cracks a funny joke about Bill Belichick’s tattered sweatshirt

“This is my absolute favorite thing about bill!”

Bill Belichick’s decision to wear a tattered sweatshirt to a press conference became a major topic of discussion (and it created plenty of laughs) on Twitter on Wednesday. So it’s unsurprising to see a former New England Patriot weighing in on the discussion.

Former Patriots running back Danny Woodhead wrote on Twitter: “This is my absolute favorite thing about bill! This may be the exact same thing that he was wearing when i met him when i was signed in 2010.”

Indeed, this is the sweatshirt has made many different appearances through the years, including when Belichick wore for Super Bowl LII.

Yes, this is the NFL’s most-discussed fashion icon.
