Bears fans believe they’ve seen the last of Danny Trevathan in Chicago

Danny Trevathan’s season is done, and Bears fans can’t help but believe that his time in Chicago is over.

The Chicago Bears placed linebacker Danny Trevathan on injured reserve Friday, marking the second time this season that he’s been on IR. Per NFL rules, that means Trevathan’s season is officially over.

With Trevathan’s season done, it’s hard not to wonder if we’ve seen the last of Trevathan in a Bears uniform. Trevathan, who was a solid signing by general manager Ryan Pace in 2015, signed a three-year extension worth $21.75 million back in 2020.

The controversy at the time revolved around which linebacker Chicago would choose to extend — a young, healthy Nick Kwiatkoski or an aging veteran with injury concerns. Pace chose Trevathan, which even at the time left a good portion of fans upset. Now, it’s clear Pace made the wrong choice.

While Trevathan still has one year left on that three-year contract, most Bears fans believe they’ve seen the last of Trevathan in Chicago. If the Bears were to release Trevathan, he’d carry a dead-cap hit of roughly $9 million, not unlike departed cornerback Kyle Fuller. Still, Bears fans are sticking to their guns that Trevathan’s time in Chicago is done.

Bears announce roster moves ahead of matchup vs. Ravens

The Bears signed Bruce Irvin to the practice squad, promoted Cassius Marsh to the active roster and Danny Trevathan’s season is done.

The Chicago Bears (3-6) are gearing up for a matchup against the Baltimore Ravens (6-3), where Chicago is looking to snap a four-game losing streak coming off their bye week.

Ahead of Sunday’s game against the Ravens, the Bears made several roster moves on the active roster and practice squad, which appears to indicate bad news on the Khalil Mack front.

Here’s a look at the roster moves the Bears made on Friday ahead of Sunday’s game vs. Baltimore:

Breaking down these Bears roster moves ahead of game vs. Raiders

The Bears made four roster moves on Saturday. From David Montgomery to Akiem Hicks, we’re breaking it down.

The Chicago Bears announced four roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders, moves that have implications for Week 5 and/or beyond.

The Bears placed running back David Montgomery on injured reserve, activated linebacker Danny Trevathan off IR, downgraded defensive tackle Akiem Hicks to out and promoted running back Ryan Nall from the practice squad to the active roster.

Here’s a breakdown of the Bears’ roster moves from Saturday:

Bears place RB David Montgomery on IR, activate LB Danny Trevathan

The Bears placed David Montgomery on IR, where his window to return is 3-5 weeks. Akiem Hicks has also been downgraded to out for Week 5.

The Chicago Bears have officially placed running back David Montgomery on injured reserve, the team announced Saturday.

Montgomery suffered a knee sprain in last Sunday’s win over the Detroit Lions, where he’s expected to be sidelined 3-5 weeks, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Linebacker Danny Trevathan has been activated off IR following a four-week hiatus with a knee injury. Alec Ogletree has been filling in for Trevathan opposite Roquan Smith, and he did a solid job of it. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Ogletree continue to start opposite Smith given his performance in the first four weeks.

Defensive tackle Akiem Hicks has been downgraded to out for Sunday’s game against the Raiders. Hicks suffered a groin injury on his first play in last Sunday’s win against Detroit.

The Bears elevated running back Ryan Nall to the 53-man roster from the practice squad, where he’ll serve as depth for running backs Damien Williams and Khalil Herbert.

Bears designate Danny Trevathan for return from injured reserve

Bears LB Danny Trevathan started his three-week window to return from IR on Wednesday.

The Chicago Bears could be getting a familiar face at inside linebacker back this week as Danny Trevathan has been designated for return from injured reserve.

Trevathan started his three-week window to return from IR on Wednesday, Bears head coach Matt Nagy announced. Trevathan can be added to the 53-man roster at any point. Nagy said there were no updates on rookie offensive tackles Larry Borom or Teven Jenkins yet.

Trevathan was dealing with knee soreness that bothered him since August. But it didn’t appear to be serious, as he was given the short-term IR treatment, which meant he could return as early as Week 4. Trevathan last played in the preseason finale against the Titans, where he recorded an interception.

In Trevathan’s absence, it’s been Roquan Smith and Alec Ogletree leading the charge at linebacker through the first three weeks.

Last season, Trevathan started all 16 games, where he had 113 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

Danny Trevathan switched his jersey to No. 6 and Bears fans had Jay Cutler jokes

Bears LB Danny Trevathan changed his jersey number to No. 6, and Jay Cutler fans were not happy.

This offseason, the NFL passed a rule proposed by the Chiefs that allowed tight ends and wide receivers to wear any number from 1-49 and 80-89, defensive backs 1-49 and linebackers 1-59 and 90-99.

Bears safety Eddie Jackson took advantage of that rule earlier in the offseason, switching from No. 39 to No. 4, his number at Alabama.

Now, linebacker Danny Trevathan is the latest Bears player to change his jersey number with the league’s new rules, trading in his No. 59 for No. 6.

The last well-known player associated with No. 6 was former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who has been a bit of a cultural icon since his retirement.

So with Trevathan making the switch to No. 6, some fans weren’t exactly pleased.

Bears Wire podcast: Concerns at cornerback and Danny Trevathan lands on IR

Does Danny Trevathan landing on IR open the door for Alec Ogletree to become starter? We discuss this and more on our Bears Wire Podcast.

We’re a little over a week away from the start of the Chicago Bears’ season, and while the Andy Dalton vs. Justin Fields’ debate wages on, there are other concerns heading into the new season — starting at cornerback.

The Bears might have the worst cornerback room in the NFL, aside from second-year pro Jaylon Johnson, who’s stepping into the CB1 role. Fellow draft classmate Kindle Vildor projects to start opposite Johnson this season, and it’ll be either Duke Shelley or safety Marqui Christian in the slot.

Even with Chicago re-signing Artie Burns to the roster, there’s not a lot of confidence that this group can stand the challenge of facing some high-flying offenses this season.

A position group that’s looking up this season is inside linebacker, which has the most depth it’s had in a few years with the offseason additions of Alec Ogletree and Christian jones.

But the Bears will be without Danny Trevathan, who was placed on short-term injured reserve earlier this week as he’s dealt with knee soreness. Trevathan can return as early as Week 4.

Trevathan’s absence clears the way for Ogletree, who signed with Chicago during training camp, to start alongside Roquan Smith. Ogletree was already pushing Trevathan for playing time. And if Ogletree continues impressing as he did in preseason, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Ogletree earned the starting role moving forward.

As the Bears prepare for the start of the regular season, host Ryan O’Leary (@RyanO_Leary) and myself (@AlyssaBarbieri) are talking all things Bears, including roster moves and, of course, the Andy Dalton-Justin Fields debate.

Breaking down the Bears’ latest roster moves

The Bears made quite a few roster moves on Wednesday, which we’re breaking down right here.

The Chicago Bears have been busy over the last couple of days, finalizing their initial 53-man roster, placing players on injured reserves, bringing back players on the active roster and building their practice squad.

Following the initial 53-man roster, the Bears made six roster moves — with one more in progress — on the 53-man roster on Wednesday, as well as brought back plenty of familiar faces on the practice squad.

Here’s a look at all the roster moves Chicago made on Wednesday:

Bears place LB Danny Trevathan, OT Teven Jenkins on injured reserve

The Bears have officially placed lB Danny Trevathan and OT Teven Jenkins on injured reserve.

The Chicago Bears have officially placed linebacker Danny Trevathan and offensive tackle Teven Jenkins on injured reserve, the team announced Wednesday.

Trevathan has been placed on short-term IR as he deals with some knee soreness, which means he’ll be eligible to return no sooner than Week 4. Trevathan played in the preseason finale against the Titans, where he recorded an interception. He had been dealing with knee soreness in August.

With Trevathan landing on IR, that clears the way for Alec Ogletree to start alongside Roquan Smith for at least the first three weeks. But if Ogletree plays well enough, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him continue to occupy that starting role.

Meanwhile, Jenkins was part of Chicago’s initial 53-man roster before being placed on IR, which made him eligible to return at some point this season. Jenkins had back surgery a couple of weeks ago, and the hope is he’ll be able to return at some point this season.

The Bears re-signed cornerback Artie Burns and safety Marqui Christian as corresponding roster moves.

Report: Bears LB Danny Trevathan to be placed on short-term injured reserve

According to Brad Biggs, the Bears are expected to place LB Danny Trevathan on short-term IR, which means it’ll be Alec Ogletree starting.

When the Chicago Bears announced their initial 53-man roster, there were questions about why they were carrying seven inside linebackers. It sounds like we have an idea why as the Bears are expected to place Danny Trevathan on short-term injured reserve to start the season, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

Trevathan landing on injured reserve clears the way for Alec Ogletree to start alongside Roquan Smith at inside linebacker when the Bears face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1.

Ogletree, who signed with the Bears on Aug. 4, was one of the biggest surprises from training camp and preseason, where he quickly played his way into a roster spot. Ogletree’s impressive performance prompted many to wonder if he could challenge Trevathan for playing time.

Trevathan played in Chicago’s preseason finale against the Titans, where he had an interception. He appeared fine, but something obviously happened.

With Trevathan out for at least the first three games, Ogletree has an opportunity to play himself into a permanent starting role alongside Smith.

When the Bears place Trevathan and rookie offensive tackle Teven Jenkins on IR, that’ll free up two roster spots, likely for cornerbacks.
