Bears injury report: Trey Burton DNP, David Montgomery limited Wednesday

The Bears released their first injury report of Week 11, where RB David Montgomery was a surprising name that popped up on the report.

The Chicago Bears (4-5) are preparing for a Week 11 primetime matchup against the Los Angeles Rams (5-4), and they’re starting the week off more banged up than usual.

After suffering a calf injury against the Detroit Lions last Sunday, tight end Trey Burton did not practice Wednesday. The Bears are thin at the tight end position, with Burton’s injury and Adam Shaheen’s benching.

Ben Braunecker scored a touchdown against the Lions last week, and he figures to get more looks heading into Sunday’s game against the Rams.

But the surprise name that popped up on Wednesday’s injury report is rookie running back David Montgomery, who was limited with an ankle injury.

After suffering a gruesome elbow injury in the first quarter against Detroit, Danny Trevathan did not practice Wednesday. Matt Nagy hasn’t given an official update on Trevathan, but Nagy didn’t seem optimistic and said it’s possible he’ll join defensive tackle Akiem Hicks on injured reserve.

Linebacker Isaiah Irving continues to nurse a quad injury that has held him out for the past two games. Practice squad linebacker James Vaughters has seen action against the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions as a result.

If Irving can’t go again Sunday, expect Vaughters to be elevated to the active roster.

Matt Nagy offers no official update on Danny Trevathan’s injury, but IR likely option

Matt Nagy didn’t have an update on Bears LB Danny Trevathan’s elbow injury, but injured reserve is likely a forgone conclusion.

When Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan exited Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions in the first quarter, it was safe to assume that he wouldn’t be returning anytime soon.

Not after suffering a gruesome elbow injury, where Trevathan’s arm was bent awkwardly as he brought down Lions quarterback Jeff Driskel.

While Trevathan had an MRI done Monday, Bears coach Matt Nagy offered no official update of Trevathan’s injury during his Monday press conference. But he didn’t sound optimistic.

“Yeah. It’ not real pretty,” Nagy said, via NBC Sports Chicago. “But it’s a part of this game. You hate to see that, so we’ll see how that goes moving forward.”

Nagy wouldn’t rule out placing Trevathan on injured reserve. Though, to be fair, Nagy said during his post game press conference that they wouldn’t know anything for a “few days.” But injured reserve feels like a foregone conclusion at this point given the gruesome look at Trevathan’s elbow injury.

“It could be,” Nagy admitted. “Again, we’ll know more here in the next couple of days, but we’ll see where it goes as far as weeks are concerned.”

With the impending loss of Trevathan, that leaves the Bears down two defensive leaders. Defensive tackle Akiem Hicks, who sustained a dislocated elbow in Week 5, was placed on injured reserve shortly after and is eligible to return in Week 15 against the Green Bay Packers.

“They’re two of the more vocal guys on that side of the ball,” Nagy said. “When you lose a guy like Danny in the middle, that leadership part, you lose a little bit…

“It’s hard, just because there is so much between the two. Just their personalities in general – they’re both a little bit different, with how they handle their personalities. But they’re very similar on the field, leadership-wise. As we move forward here, we’ll have guys that are always ready and prepared and the coaches will have them the same way.”

Bears LB Nick Kwiatkoski steps up in place of injured LB Danny Trevathan

The Bears lost starting LB Danny Trevathan to a gruesome elbow injury, but reserve LB Nick Kwiatkoski stepped up in his absence.

When Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan suffered a gruesome elbow injury, backup Nick Kwiatkoski rose to the occasion in his place in Chicago’s 20-13 victory over the Lions.

Trevathan left the game in the first quarter after his arm bent the wrong way as he attempted to sack Lions quarterback Jeff Driskel. Trevathan immediately left the field, knowing that something was wrong.

While Bears coach Matt Nagy didn’t offer an update on Trevathan’s injury, it appeared to be similar to defensive tackle Akiem Hick’s elbow dislocation, perhaps worse.

Kwiatkoski relieved Trevathan with one of the best games of his career. He finished second in tackles with 9, recorded a sack and had the Bears’ lone takeaway — an interception of Driskel early in the third quarter, which led to a Bears scoring drive.

Kwiakoski once again proved to not only be an adamant fill-in but a productive one, just like he did earlier this season in place of linebacker Roquan Smith, who was a healthy scratch against the Minnesota Vikings.

‘‘It’s just preparation,’’ he said, via the Sun-Times. ‘‘As a linebacker, you plan on playing. Things happen throughout the course of a season, and you have to be ready for it.’’

Trevathan looks to be out awhile with his elbow injury, and Kwiatkoski suddenly has a big opportunity in front of him.

‘‘It’s not the way I want it to happen,” Kwiatkoski said. “Danny’s a close friend of mine.’’

But Kwiatkoski will get his chance this week as the Bears travel to Los Angeles to play the Rams on Sunday Night Football.
