Experts move Notre Dame up in polls

Notre Dame is getting back in the experts’ good graces.

Along with making moves in the AP Top 25 Poll, the No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish are moving up on the experts’ lists, too.

Well, on one expert’s list. Another keeps the Fighting Irish in the same spot.

[autotag]Danny Kanell[/autotag] has Notre Dame at No. 8 this week, one spot up from last week. [autotag]Joel Klatt[/autotag] kept the Irish at No. 10.

Kanell’s top 12 is Oregon, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, SMU, Miami (Florida), Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Alabama, Georgia and Tulane.

Klatt’s top 10 is Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, Indiana, Penn State, Georgia, Ole Miss, Alabama, Tennessee and Notre Dame. “Almosts” are Miami (Florida), Boise State, Texas A&M and Colorado.

One analyst believes Texas A&M is a better football team than the Texas Longhorns

It’s a debate worth having, but the Aggies still have plenty to prove in their last three games

After ten weeks of play, Tuesday’s 12-team College Football Playoff rankings reveal saw the Texas Longhorns, currently 7-1 and 3-1 in SEC play, earn a 5th-ranking, while Texas A&M, tied for first in the SEC at 5-1, ranked 14th and the “second team out,” below No. 13 SMU.

Texas and Texas A&M will meet at the end of the year inside a sold-out Kyle Field in what should be a night game, and if both teams win out before meeting each other on Nov. 30, the winner will more than likely earn a spot in both the CFB Playoff and a spot in the SEC Championship game.

However, as we’ve seen throughout the conference season, the SEC is unforgiving, as A&M’s 44-20 loss to South Carolina was the best example of a team riding high after defeating LSU 38-23 the week prior.

The schedule for Texas has been easy, but after losing to Georgia at home in blowout fashion, the Longhorns have lost the love of some national media members.

On Saturday morning, CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell was clearly one of the media members who were lower on Longhorn’s postseason outlook. The veteran analyst believes Texas A&M is a more complete team than Texas despite having two losses this year.

“I think Texas A&M is the better team in Texas.”

While Texas fans and Longhorn media will likely dismiss Kanell’s opinion, his argument is based on Texas’s strength of schedule and unimpressive victories against Michigan and Oklahoma while barely escaping the Vanderbilt Commodores.

At the same time, Texas A&M has already defeated two AP top 10 ranked teams (at the time): Missouri and LSU. Roster-wise, the Longhorns’ secondary and wide receiver depth is a clear advantage. Still, Texas’s offensive line has been suspect, while starting QB Quinn Ewers has been average to above average throughout his injury-riddled season.

This debate will be solved on the field, and if Texas A&M can defeat New Mexico State and Auburn (on the road) before hosting the Longhorns, we’ll be in for one heck of a regular season finale with plenty on the line.

Experts bring Notre Dame back into fold

Notre Dame is back on the experts’ radar.

Notre Dame may have slipped a little in the AP Top 25 poll, but [autotag]Danny Kanell[/autotag] and [autotag]Joel Klatt[/autotag] have the Fighting Irish back on their radar.

Kanell has the Irish back in his top 10 while Klatt has them getting an “almost” vote.

Kanell actually lists his top 12 teams and the Fighting Irish are number 10. His top five is Oregon, Miami (Florida), Indiana, BYU and Ohio State. Following are Georgia, SMU, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Boise State.

Klatt has his top 10 as Oregon, Ohio State, Georgia, Texas, Miami (Florida), Indiana, Tennessee, Penn State, Alabama and BYU. Notre Dame and Boise State get “almost” votes.

So while it might be frustrating for Irish fans to see Notre Dame slip two spots in the AP poll without playing, it appears there’s a consensus among the experts that the Fighting Irish are, at present, right around number 10 in the rankings.

Notre Dame remains in the AP Top 10 for Week 10.

Danny Kanell doesn’t have Notre Dame football as one of his top teams

This was a big miss by Kanell

As we all saw on Sunday, Notre Dame football has reentered the US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Poll’s top-10.

While those rankings are fairly close to what we should see from most analysts, [autotag]Danny Kanell[/autotag], the former Florida State quarterback doesn’t think so. The current CBS Sports analyst named his top-12, with the Irish nowhere in sight.

What’s interesting about his rankings is that he claims that he “ignores brand bias” and has a team ranked over Notre Dame that they beat, Texas A&M. It’s hard to really take this seriously, as Kanell also has Pittsburgh and Iowa State over teams like Ohio State and Texas.

The Irish have turned things around after its loss to Northern Illinois, reeling off 6-straight wins, with its most impressive coming this past weekend when they rolled Navy to a tune of 51-14.

Kanell clearly missed an opportunity to place Notre Dame in the right spot, but he does have time to correct his mistake. It won’t likely come this week with the Irish off, but they’ll have more chances to change his mind as the season starts its final stretch.

Danny Kanell blasts Ohio State fans with latest criticism

This is too good! #GoBlue

Certainly, Michigan football fans have issues with former Florida State quarterback Danny Kanell after he blasted the Wolverines in the aftermath of the Connor Stalions saga. But this will help win them back to his side.

Kanell has been outspoken in recent weeks about Ohio State’s weak nonconference schedule this year, and he’s received his fair share of blowback from south of Monroe County. In no way was Kanell saying the Buckeyes aren’t good, but that doesn’t mean the schedule is high caliber and what they’re doing against lesser teams is particularly impressive.

But he pushes back on the pushback and uses Michigan football to do so.

Priceless.

Of course, Michigan was blasted each of the past two years for having a weak nonconference schedule, but it has had strong early opponents in most years and does so again this year with Texas having come to The Big House. But the Wolverines won the national championship last year and it remains to be seen if Ohio State can replicate the Wolverines’ success of late.

This national analyst chimed in on social media as Dabo Swinney stuck with DJ Uiagalelei for the duration of Saturday’s 31-30 loss to South Carolina.

CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell commented on “Dabo’s love for DJ,” who set season-lows for completions (8) and completion percentage (27.5) with just 99 yards through the air, another season-low for Clemson’s starting quarterback. Uiagalelei also threw his fifth interception in the last five games.

Despite Uiagalelei’s most ineffective performance of the season as a passer, he was never benched Saturday, and Swinney did not turn to freshman backup Cade Klubnik like he did against Syracuse and Notre Dame. On Sunday, Swinney said Uiagalelei will remain the starter for Saturday’s ACC Championship Game vs. North Carolina.

Here’s the comment that Kanell made on Twitter during Saturday’s game:

Clemson slid down in this national analyst’s personal rankings following Week 8 of the college football season.

CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell dropped the Tigers from No. 2 to No. 3 despite their 27-21 win over Syracuse on Saturday at Death Valley.

Kanell has Ohio State at No. 1 and Tennessee at No. 2, with Georgia rounding out his top four behind Clemson. Kanell’s next two teams after the Bulldogs are Michigan at No. 5 and TCU at No. 6.

Ohio State beat Iowa, 54-10, in Columbus on Saturday, while Tennessee took care of business against UT Martin in Knoxville, winning 65-24.

Georgia and Michigan each had an open date this past weekend. TCU defeated Kansas State, 38-28, at home in Fort Worth.

The teams in Kanell’s top six are the only remaining undefeated teams in college football.

Clemson (8-0, 6-0 ACC) has a bye this weekend before returning to action on Nov. 5 at Notre Dame (7:30 p.m., NBC).

The Tigers remained ranked No. 5 in both the latest AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll released Sunday.

This national analyst has some bulletin board material for Clemson.

Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt chimed in on the Tigers via Twitter on Sunday, opining that he doesn’t think Clemson could win either division in the SEC or Big Ten East.

Klatt also doesn’t think the Tigers could finish better than third in the SEC East (which includes Georgia and Tennessee) or better than third in the Big Ten East (which includes Michigan and Ohio State).

CBS Sports analyst Danny Kanell later called out Klatt on Twitter, defending Clemson and saying he has no doubt the Tigers would be undefeated with the schedules Ohio State and Michigan have played to date:

Ohio State has played Notre Dame, Arkansas State, Toledo, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Michigan State and Iowa to this point, while Michigan has played Colorado State, Hawai’i, UConn, Maryland, Iowa, Indiana and Penn State.

The Wolverines have one win over a ranked team (then-No. 10 Penn State on Oct. 15), while the Buckeyes have likewise beaten only one ranked team (then-No. 5 Notre Dame in the season opener on Sept. 3, and the Irish of course are no longer ranked).

Clemson (8-0, 6-0 ACC) has wins against three teams currently ranked in both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll — Wake Forest, NC State and Syracuse.

This quartet of national analysts came out with their college football rankings following Week 7 of the season.

CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell and ESPN’s Ryan Leaf, as well as FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt and RJ Young, have all released their personal rankings.

Kanell is the highest on Clemson among them, ranking the Tigers at No. 2 behind only Tennessee, which upset Alabama at home last Saturday, 52-49. Michigan and Ohio State round out his top four.

Leaf has Clemson ranked No. 4 behind Georgia at No. 1, Tennessee at No. 2 and Michigan at No. 3. Both Klatt and Young have the Tigers at No. 5.

Klatt’s top four is comprised of Ohio State, Tennessee, Georgia and Michigan, in that order, while Young’s top four features Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan and Tennessee, respectively.

Clemson (7-0, 5-0 ACC) is ranked No. 5 in both the latest AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll coming off its 34-28 win at Florida State last Saturday.

The Tigers return to action this Saturday when fellow ACC Atlantic Division unbeaten and 14th-ranked Syracuse (6-0, 3-0) travels to Death Valley for a 12 p.m. kickoff on ABC.
