It’s a debate worth having, but the Aggies still have plenty to prove in their last three games
After ten weeks of play, Tuesday’s 12-team College Football Playoff rankings reveal saw the Texas Longhorns, currently 7-1 and 3-1 in SEC play, earn a 5th-ranking, while Texas A&M, tied for first in the SEC at 5-1, ranked 14th and the “second team out,” below No. 13 SMU.
Texas and Texas A&M will meet at the end of the year inside a sold-out Kyle Field in what should be a night game, and if both teams win out before meeting each other on Nov. 30, the winner will more than likely earn a spot in both the CFB Playoff and a spot in the SEC Championship game.
However, as we’ve seen throughout the conference season, the SEC is unforgiving, as A&M’s 44-20 loss to South Carolina was the best example of a team riding high after defeating LSU 38-23 the week prior.
The schedule for Texas has been easy, but after losing to Georgia at home in blowout fashion, the Longhorns have lost the love of some national media members.
On Saturday morning, CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell was clearly one of the media members who were lower on Longhorn’s postseason outlook. The veteran analyst believes Texas A&M is a more complete team than Texas despite having two losses this year.
“I think Texas A&M is the better team in Texas.”
While Texas fans and Longhorn media will likely dismiss Kanell’s opinion, his argument is based on Texas’s strength of schedule and unimpressive victories against Michigan and Oklahoma while barely escaping the Vanderbilt Commodores.
At the same time, Texas A&M has already defeated two AP top 10 ranked teams (at the time): Missouri and LSU. Roster-wise, the Longhorns’ secondary and wide receiver depth is a clear advantage. Still, Texas’s offensive line has been suspect, while starting QB Quinn Ewers has been average to above average throughout his injury-riddled season.
This debate will be solved on the field, and if Texas A&M can defeat New Mexico State and Auburn (on the road) before hosting the Longhorns, we’ll be in for one heck of a regular season finale with plenty on the line.
