USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, Dec. 17: Joaquin Buckley, Manel Kape soar

Check out the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings following UFC on ESPN 63 including movement from Joaquin Buckley and Manel Kape.

UFC on ESPN 63 took place Saturday in Tampa, Fla. and resulted in all sorts of movement in the USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings.

Most notably, main event victor [autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag] (21-6 MMA, 11-4 UFC) traded places in the welterweight rankings with the man he stopped on a cut, multitime UFC title challenger Colby Covington (17-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC). Buckley slides to Nov. 5 while Covington falls to No. 10.

Additionally, a big win for [autotag]Manel Kape[/autotag] (20-7 MMA, 6-3 UFC) results in him bumping up into the No. 6 position in the flyweight rankings. That’s for a TKO win over Bruno Silva (14-6-2 MMA, 4-3 UFC).

Wins from [autotag]Daniel Marcos[/autotag], [autotag]Miranda Maverick[/autotag], and Invicta FC’s [autotag]Jennifer Maia[/autotag] also had impact in the rankings.

Daniel Marcos calls out Jose Aldo, sends message to bantamweight division after UFC Tampa

Throw Daniel Marcos’ hat into the ring for a chance to fight former champion Jose Aldo.

TAMPA, Fla. – Throw [autotag]Daniel Marcos[/autotag]’ hat into the ring for a chance to fight former champion Jose Aldo.

Marcos (17-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) stayed unbeaten Saturday when he eked past Adrian Yanez (17-6 MMA, 6-3 UFC) with a split decision in their bantamweight fight on the main card at UFC on ESPN 63 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla.

Afterward, Marcos, a 31-year-old Peruvian 135-pounder, said he wants a fight against ex-featherweight champ Aldo (32-9 MMA, 14-8 UFC), who recently came out of an announced retirement that lasted a whopping five months and lost to Mario Bautista.

“A win is a win. A win is learning who I am – somebody that I know is going to be a tough fight. That’s what I bring to the division. I’m a guy that’s always going to be a dog out there, always pushing. I’m always going forward. I am a new face of this division as far as the up-and-comers right now.

“I beat somebody that was in the top 15. I beat somebody that has been to the top 15 before. I think I deserve to be in the top 15 again.”

And on his way to moving past the up-and-comer label, Marcos said a fight against a former titleholder and UFC Hall of Famer like Aldo will show he’s the future of the weight class.

“I want to fight the best. I’m here to fight the best. I want to fight to be a champion. I want to learn more, so that’s what I’ll do for the next fight. I want somebody who’s had his time. I believe it is my time (now). Jose Aldo – I think he’s had his time. I think it’s my time. I think I need to tell people right now the Peruvian has arrived. A dog has arrived – someone who’s going to be the new face of the division, a new generation has arrived.”

Marcos joined fellow UFC on ESPN 63 winner Davey Grant in his callout of Aldo, but Marcos has one thing going for him if it’s a two-person race. In July 2023, Marcos outworked Grant for a split decision.

If he can’t get Aldo, though, Marcos said he wants to keep climbing.

“Hopefully in 2025, I think it’s going to be step by step – doing the work that needs to be done whenever the time comes,” Marcos said. “I know that I’m working and I deserve it. That’s my dream. But the ultimate dream is actually for the UFC to come to Peru. I want Peru to be able to enjoy this spectacle that is this event.

“I haven’t really thought about (anyone else but Aldo). I’m a dog and I know that I’m ready to fight against anybody. Against any world-class fighter, I’m ready to go.”

Daniel Marcos vs. Adrian Yanez prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ESPN 63

Dangerous bantamweights clash on the main card at UFC Tampa. How can Adrian Yanez end Daniel Marcos’ undefeated run?

[autotag]Daniel Marcos[/autotag] and [autotag]Adrian Yanez[/autotag] meet Saturday on the UFC on ESPN 63 main card at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 3-2
UFC main cards, 2024: 107-93-3

Daniel Marcos vs. Adrian Yanez UFC on ESPN 63 preview

Marcos (16-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) puts his undefeated record on the line against arguably his toughest test to date. This fight will be Marcos’ third walk to the cage in 2024. His first resulted in a no contest against Aori Qileng in February, and the second was a unanimous decision win over John Castañeda. … Yanez (17-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) will look to keep his momentum going after returning to the win column in May by stopping Vinicius Salvador in the opening round. The result was a rebound from a rough 2023, where Yanez lost back-to-back fights to end a nine-fight winning streak.

Daniel Marcos vs. Adrian Yanez UFC on ESPN 63 expert pick, prediction

Filling out the main card is a potential bantamweight banger between Marcos and Yanez.

It’s nice to see a solid 135-pound fight not being buried on the prelims. It’s also nice because this slot, coupled with Yanez’s name, will give Marcos a chance to show his skills to more UFC fans.

That said, if Marcos isn’t able to establish his kicking presence early and often (particularly to the legs), then I suspect that Yanez will make exchanges both competitive and exciting.

This fight could either way, but I’ll side with Yanez’s more eye-catching offense to win the judges over in a tight decision that goes the American’s way.

Daniel Marcos vs. Adrian Yanez UFC on ESPN 63 odds

The oddsmakers and the public are favoring the Peruvian fighter, listing Marcos -200 and Yanez +160 via FanDuel.

Daniel Marcos vows to KO Adrian Yanez at UFC on ESPN 63, break into bantamweight rankings

Daniel Marcos sees a big opportunity to further his MMA career in his UFC on ESPN 63 matchup vs. Adrian Yanez.

TAMPA, Fla. – [autotag]Daniel Marcos[/autotag] sees his return at UFC on ESPN 63 as an opportunity to punch his ticket into the UFC official bantamweight rankings.

“Soncora,” an undefeated fighter from Peru, takes on Adrian Yanez – arguably the biggest name he’s ever faced in his career. This key bantamweight bout goes down on the main card of UFC Tampa. Marcos (16-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) recognizes Yanez (17-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) is a skilled rival, but he expects to put him away in impressive fashion and prove he’s among the elite at 135 pounds.

“He’s a very tough rival,” Marcos told MMA Junkie in Spanish. “Once you get close to the top 15, and you’re in the top 20 of the division, all the opponents are tough. However, I’ve trained so hard spiritually and physically that he has no chance against me.

“I’m very strong. We know he’s a boxer and has good hands, but this is MMA. I can fight standing, on the ground; I have knees, elbows and kicks. I’m very versatile. All I can say is that I’m going to finish him in the second round. I’m ready for the next level. I believe I’m at the next level, and I don’t say that with ego, I just have so much trust in my work.”

Stopping Yanez would maintain Marcos’ undefeated status and put him 4-0 in the UFC. He believes this is more than enough to earn him a spot in the UFC official bantamweight rankings.

“Yes, I’m definitely fighting for a spot in the rankings,” Marcos said. “I think winning this fight, I’m in the rankings. I have four fights in the UFC. I’m an undefeated fighter that’s 16-0, but should be 17-0 because my opponent in February backed out because of a (illegal) hit that wasn’t all that. I consider that as a win. But definitely, you’re talking about someone that’s undefeated, 16-0, four fights in the UFC, this is definitely a great opportunity to enter the top 15 of the division.”

UFC on ESPN 63’s Adrian Yanez: Taking Daniel Marcos’ ‘0’ an added incentive

Adrian Yanez will look to halt Daniel Marcos’ momentum at UFC on ESPN 63.

[autotag]Adrian Yanez[/autotag] will look to halt [autotag]Daniel Marcos[/autotag]’ momentum at UFC on ESPN 63.

Yanez (17-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) takes on unbeaten bantamweight Marcos (16-0-1 MMA, 3-0-1 UFC) Dec. 14 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla.

Yanez went from a streaking, red-hot prospect to a two-fight losing skid, but managed to return to the win column in his most recent outing when he stopped Vinicius Salvador by Round 1 TKO in May. He sees a win over Marcos putting him back on the rankings’ radar.

“Seeing Daniel and seeing his ‘0,’ I just keep saying I’m going to take his goose egg,” Yanez told MMA Junkie Radio. “I’m going to give him the one (loss). He might be really good, he might be the next best thing, but I’m going to give him that one.

“I’m going to be the guy that takes that one because it’s just the challenge. You just see that in front of you and say he’s a dangerous man. He’s a very dangerous man, and I know I am too. So, whenever I see that, it excites me, it gives a little more oomph for the challenge.”

Despite snapping his losing skid, Yanez won’t relax just yet.

“I’m able to compartmentalize a little bit more, a little bit better,” Yanez said. “I knew I was with my back against the wall, and I still feel like my back is against the wall. I just compartmentalize it a little bit better because I know I have to come home and be with the family, and I can’t put myself in that type of a mode and be around the family like that.”

UFC Tampa adds Daniel Marcos vs. Said Nurmagomedov

Days after his UFC 308 bout was canceled, Said Nurmagomedov is back on the books.

Nurmagomedov initially was slated to fight Daniel Santos at Saturday’s pay-per-view event in Abu Dhabi, but was removed by the promotion after Santos withdrew. He has not competed since October 2023, when he bounced back into the win column with a 73-second submission victory over Muin Gafurov.

Marcos has yet to lose as a professional. In the UFC, he holds wins over Saimon Oliveira, Davey Grant and John Castaneda. Additionally, he fought Aori Qileng in a bout that ended in a no contest due to inadvertent groin strikes.

Daniel Marcos: UFC on ESPN 57 a great opportunity to stop John Castañeda, close in on rankings

Daniel Marcos thinks a UFC ranking could come with a win in Louisville.

There’s no denying the UFC’s bantamweight division is stacked. Outside the promotion’s official top-15 rankings, there are several young contenders on the rise, and many find Peru’s [autotag]Daniel Marcos[/autotag] to be part of that pack.

Marcos (15-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC), unbeaten in his MMA career, returns to the octagon Saturday against [autotag]John Castaneda[/autotag] (21-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC) at UFC on ESPN 57. He plans to make a big statement and continue his undefeated run in the sport.

“I believe in my work, and I’m going to do something that many people don’t expect or don’t think I can do.” Marcos told MMA Junkie in Spanish. “… This is a great opportunity for me. I’m going to go out and finish him, and this time he won’t have a chance to have his moments or have the judges award him a win.

“I’m going out to finish. I’m fueled and I’m very hungry. My blood is boiling and when he’s in front of me. He’s going to feel my power. Any opponent that faces me is going to feel my power.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=420030788]

Marcos expects this fight to play out on the feet, but is ready for anything.

“Keeping in mind he’s a southpaw and the angles he uses, I think a lot of this fight is going to be standing,” Marcos said. “I think fans are going to enjoy this fight and wherever this fight goes, I’ll be ready. If he wants to wrestle and grapple, I’m ready. If he decides to take me down, he better be ready because I’m going to squash him.”

Marcos thinks he should be 3-0 in the UFC, as he was beating Aoriqileng in his last outing before a groin strike from him ended the bout in a no contest. He hopes a win Saturday could get him a spot in the rankings.

“This is a very tough division, but I’m 100 percent sure that in the next few months my name is going to be up there,” Marcos said. “It’s going to happen very soon. I’ve visualized it, and it’s only a matter of time.”
