Excitement level for Wisconsin basketball signee Daniel Freitag next season?

Wisconsin basketball is in a state of flux at the moment.

Leaving the program are veteran big man Tyler Wahl and star guard A.J. Storr — Wahl due to graduation and Storr via the transfer portal. Greg Gard does return a ton of backcourt talent, including Chucky Hepburn, John Blackwell and Max Klesmit. But the roster is experiencing turnover before a critical 2024-25 season.

One bright spot entering that season is top signee Daniel Freitag.

The Bloomington, Minnesota native is 247Sports’ No. 114 player in the class of 2024, No. 10 point guard and No. 2 recruit from the state of Minnesota.

Wisconsin’s lost production could be made up in part by Freitag excelling in his first collegiate season. He has all of the talent in the world, and could become an accomplished Badger — at least given health and him not entering the portal.

Wisconsin basketball enters the 2024 offseason needing a jolt.

The Badgers recently fell 72-61 to No. 12-seed James Madison in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament. The loss marked another disappointing early postseason exit for Greg Gard’s program and extended its Sweet Sixteen drought to seven years.

The focus now turns to 2024-25. The Badgers should return almost all of their talent from this past season, plus are set to welcome in top 2024 point guard recruit Daniel Freitag. The program will also be active in the transfer portal this offseason.

While the loss to James Madison made the 2023-24 season a disappointment, the team will enter 2024-25 with a ton of potential and sky-high expectations.

As the offseason continues and the class of 2024 arrives on campus, here’s a look at where Gard’s classes of 2024 and 2025 currently rank on 247Sports.com:

Wisconsin basketball top 2024 signee wins Minnesota 2A state championship

Wisconsin top class of 2024 signee Daniel Freitag led the Breck School to the Minnesota 2A state championship on Saturday.

The future Badger point guard dropped 33 points in the 76-72 win, including several clutch baskets in the final minutes.

Freitag is currently ranked as the No. 114 overall player in the class of 2024, No. 10 point guard and No. 2 recruit from the state of Minnesota. He is Wisconsin’s top-ranked player in the class and figures to make an impact from day one.

He is the centerpiece of a Wisconsin recruiting class that currently ranks No. 57 in the nation with only Freitag and three-star shooting guard Jack Robinson committed.

 

Greg Gard and his staff will have more work to do this offseason to bolster the roster and set the Badgers up to snap the now seven-year Sweet Sixteen drought. But the program does appear to be set in the backcourt entering 2024-25, even with young guard Connor Essegian entered the transfer portal Sunday evening. Chucky Hepburn, John Blackwell, A.J. Storr, Max Klesmit and Freitag could create the program’s most exciting, and athletic, backcourt in decades.

Wisconsin officially signs its top-ranked class of 2024 recruit

The city of Madison, Wisconsin Badgers fans and the college basketball world are likely focused on Wisconsin’s upcoming tilt against No. 9 Tennessee on Friday night.

Rightfully so, as the Badgers appear to be much improved from last year and began their season with a 105-76 win over Arkansas State. A win against Tennessee on Friday, and we could be looking at a Big Ten-contending team.

While all that is going on, Wisconsin did officially sign its top-ranked recruit in the class of 2024: four-star point guard Daniel Freitag.

Freitag is the No. 117 player in the class, the No. 8 point guard and No. 2 recruit from his home state of Minnesota.

The point guard is one of two players committed to Wisconsin’s class of 2024, alongside three-star shooting guard Jack Robinson. The class as a whole ranks No. 47 nationally at this point in the process.

Badger commit set to remain in MN for final HS season

Freitag announced that he will remain in his home state for his final year of high school, instead of heading to Southern California Academy

Daniel Freitag, a four-star class of 2024 guard from Bloomington, Minnesota committed to Wisconsin in early June. Freitag announced Sunday that he will remain in his home state for his final year of high school basketball, instead of heading to Southern California Academy as he’d previously declared.

Freitag will attend Breck School in Golden Valley, Minnesota in 2023-2024. When it comes to the Badgers, this is a positive result. If he were to have went out to the west coast, there’d likely have been a higher chance that he could decommit.

The 6-foot-2 two-sport athlete has also been recruited by the football team in Madison, something that he hasn’t ruled out also pursuing. As is, Freitag represents the fifth-highest rated recruit in Wisconsin men’s basketball history.

Wisconsin makes the top four for a top-100 recruit in the class of 2024

Wisconsin’s class of 2024 could crack the nation’s top five if it lands two highly-coveted targets..

The Wisconsin basketball program has a massive few months ahead.

No, there aren’t any games scheduled. But Greg Gard’s class of 2024, which is ranked in the top 15 nationally and led by top point guard Daniel Freitag, has a few massive targets that will be wrapping up their recruiting process.

The first is five-star in-state small forward Kon Knueppel, a top-20 recruit in the class who has interest from the sport’s blue bloods.

The second is four-star power forward Jackson McAndrew. The Minneapolis, Minnesota, native is 247Sports’ No. 88 player in the class of 2024 and No. 1 recruit from his home state.

Earlier Monday, McAndrew included Wisconsin in his final four schools with Xavier, Creighton and Notre Dame.

Wisconsin’s class would challenge for the best in the country if it landed both Knueppel and McAndrew. But ranking aside, their signing would set Gard and the program up for an incredible level of success moving forward.

Wisconsin basketball and Greg Gard made headlines this month when the program landed a commitment from four-star 2024 point guard Daniel Freitag.

Not only is Freitag the highest-ranked recruit of the Gard era, he is the fifth-highest recruit in program history. To call it a win might be underselling how big this is for Gard’s future in Madison.

Wisconsin’s class of 2024 ranks 16th nationally with Freitag and three-star small forward Jack Robison committed. They will join a large group of talented players arriving in Madison over the next few years. That group includes transfer guard A.J. Storr and a talented 2023 class of center Gus Yalden, forward Nolan Winter and guard John Blackwell.

For now, Wisconsin’s work consists of keeping Freitag committed as the 2024 cycle continues.

The Minnesota native and current So Cal Academy prospect is a top-ten point guard in the 2024 class, and one of the best scorers and creators at his position in the country.

According to the 247Sports all-time rankings, Freitag is the No. 5 overall prospect that Wisconsin basketball has ever landed, and the top in the Greg Gard era. Nate Reuvers was the previous highest-ranked recruit that Gard had landed.

The four-star point guard is ready to make an impact in Madison.

The 6-foot-2 athlete chose to head to Madison and play for Greg Gard and his Badger squad. Fellow Minnesota natives like Steven Crowl (Eagan, MN) and class of 2023 recruit Nolan Winter (Lakeville, MN) are amongst the players from his state that will likely be his teammates at Wisconsin.

Freitag is set to play for Southern California Academy for his final season of high school basketball in 2023 before joining the Badgers. He is the 10th ranked point guard in his class and could end up being the greatest recruit that Greg Gard has reeled in.

Additionally, he became the second player to commit to Wisconsin for the class of 2024, joining three-star Jack Robison (Lakeville, MN) in Madison.

Freitag is a member of the class of 2024 and still has one more season of high school basketball at Southern California Academy. The 6-foot-2 athlete is originally from Jefferson, Minnesota, which may explain his potential attraction to Greg Gard and his program at Wisconsin.

In the end, multiple players including Tyler Wahl (Lakeville, MN) and Steven Crowl (Eagan, MN) are from Freitag’s home state. Friday’s announcement could be a massive one for Gard and his staff if they can reel in a talent as highly touted as Freitag.

Additionally, as a multi-sport athlete, he also holds an offer from the Badger football team as a four-star wide receiver.
