Giants injury report: Kadarius Toney limited with hamstring issue

The New York Giants saw a few changes to their injury report on Thursday with WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring) being added.

The New York Giants were back on the practice field Thursday and a few things changed from the day prior.

Rookie edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, who head coach Brian Daboll said did some team work on Wednesday, was again limited. The same held true for fellow edge rusher Azeez Ojulari.

The status and participation of other injured Giants, including wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, remained the same. The good news came via cornerback Aaron Robinson, who is scheduled to be released from the hospital following an emergency appendectomy.

On the downside of things, wide receiver Kadarius Toney was added to the injury report with a hamstring issue.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: CB Nick McCloud (hamstring), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), CB Aaron Robinson (appendicitis), OL Devery Hamilton (illness)

Limited participant: LB Kayvon Thibodeaux (knee), LB Azeez Ojulari (calf), OL Jon Feliciano (lower leg), S Jason Pinnock (shoulder), WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring)

Giants injury report: Kayvon Thibodeaux, Azeez Ojulari limited

Three players missed practice for the New York Giants on Wednesday and four others, including Kayvon Thibodeaux, were limited.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday and they were noticeably short.

In addition to cornerback Aaron Robinson, who will miss Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers following an appendectomy, several other players sat out. Among them was wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, who head coach Brian Daboll says is “day-to-day.”

Edge rushers Azeez Ojulari and Kayvon Thibodeaux were technically limited, but their workload was exceptionally light. Thibodeaux did slightly more than Ojulari.

Giants’ Kayvon Thibodeaux, Azeez Ojulari doubtful vs. Titans

The New York Giants have listed edge rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari as doubtful for a Week 1 game against the Titans.

The New York Giants wrapped up their first week of regular season practice on Friday and considering what they went through over the summer, are relatively healthy overall.

But that’s not to say they aren’t dealing with a few obvious issues.

Edge rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari were both “limited” this week and even that is stretching it. They essentially participated in individual drills without making any contact and focused primarily on hand and footwork. The duo are doubtful on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard (Achilles) did not appear on the Friday injury report.

Both the Giants’ and Titans’ final injury reports can be found below:

Giants injury report: Kayvon Thibodeaux, Azeez Ojulari limited

New York Giants edge rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari were limited on Wednesday, but don’t look close to returning.

The New York Giants took the field for their second regular season practice of the year on Wednesday and all eyes were on edge rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari.

24 hours removed from participating in limited portions of individual practice, the two appeared to be even restricted than the day prior. They were relegated to hand and footwork.

In addition to Thibodeaux and Ojulari, rookie safety Dane Belton was also limited in practice on Wednesday. However, he appeared to be doing much more than his defensive counterparts.

Giants’ Xavier McKinney has taken Dane Belton under his wing

New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney, who was recently named a team captain, discusses taking rookie Dane Belton under his wing.

The New York Giants released the first pass of their 53-man roster on Tuesday and it contains just three safeties. That seems like an odd choice considering new defensive coordinator Wink Martindale’s scheme relies so heavily on the safety position.

Xavier McKinney, Julian Love and rookie Dane Belton are the three players the Giants are going to ride with at safety to begin the season. That is, if they don’t add one between now and their season opener in Tennessee on September 11.

McKinney and Love were both named captains by their teammates on Tuesday.

“It means a lot,” said McKinney, a 2020 second-round draft pick. “It’s obviously an honor to be voted by my teammates, the guys that I go to work for every day, the guys that I grind with every day. It’s always meant a lot to me to become a captain. It says a lot about what my teammates think about me as a person and as a player. It’s honoring, I’m happy, but I’ve got to keep going and keep getting better each day.”

Love has gone through a gauntlet of roles since joining the team in 2019 as a fourth round draft pick out of Notre Dame. He has progressively worn his way into the fabric of this Giants’ team with his versatility.

“I’m not going to lie it means an awful lot to me,” said Love. “I’ve never been a captain in my entire life, and to do it for the Giants of all places at the highest level, it’s hard not to get emotional about it. It’s often that I feel like people have always wanted me to be more outspoken, wanted me to be the rah-rah guy, wanted me to be the muscle-head, all that stuff. But this team has appreciated me for staying true to myself. So, I’m extremely grateful.”

Belton, a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft, has been out with a collarbone injury but is expected to be ready for the season opener. McKinney has drawn him close from the day he arrived.

“I said this a little while back — I put him under my wing, I treated him like a little brother when he came in just making sure that he was getting ahead of the game before we even started everything,” McKinney said. “We trained out in Tampa, me, him and (Aaron Robinson). We trained and we watched film together.

“He’s done a great job of just coming in and preparing, asking questions. We’ve all been able to work off each other. It’s been fun having him. I think he’s a very smart player, a really good person, and he’s just continuing to improve and help us out in the DB room.”

‘It happens naturally’: CB Riley Moss, Iowa Hawkeyes ready to replace defensive departures

All-American cornerback Riley Moss said “it happens naturally” that players move on as the Iowa Hawkeyes look to reload in the secondary.

There will be plenty of talk over the remainder of this month about how Iowa is replacing some talented members in its secondary. Hawkeyes head football coach Kirk Ferentz mentioned as much after another successful Kids’ Day at Kinnick.

It makes sense, too. Iowa is in the business of replacing 95 combined career starts between Dane Belton, Matt Hankins, and Jack Koerner. Riley Moss, the defending Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year, shared his thoughts on how the Hawkeyes can navigate that hurdle and more at Iowa Media Day.

Giants rookie Dane Belton has broken collarbone

Giants rookie Dane Belton has a broken collarbone and will be sidelined for an extended period of time

The New York Giants were counting on fourth-round rookie Dane Belton to contribute in their safety rotation this year, but for now, that plan is on hold.

On Monday, Belton was seen on the sidelines with his arm in a sling. He has a fractured collarbone that will require surgery and keep him on the shelf indefinitely. There is speculation that he could be ready for the start of the regular season, but that seems unlikely.

Belton was the 114th overall selection in this year’s NFL draft out of Iowa and was being counted on to fill a need at safety alongside Xavier McKinney and Julian Love. The Giants will now have to find depth elsewhere until Belton can return.

Belton was chosen by the Giants due to his versatility as a safety/linebacker hybrid who fits in well with the new scheme being implemented by defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.
