Giants injury report: Jermaine Eluemunor, Evan Neal return to practice

New York Giants OL Jermaine Eluemunor and OL Evan Neal returned to practice on Thursday, while QB Tommy DeVito took a step toward suiting up.

Beforehand, head coach Brian Daboll updated the status of several injured players, including quarterback Tommy DeVito, who now appears in line to suit up on Sunday.

“(He looked) better than he’s been, so he will be the No. 2,” Daboll said.

Daboll also offered a positive update on offensive tackles Jermaine Eluemunor and Evan Neal, revealing their return to practice.

Giants-Panthers Week 10: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants lost their Week 10 game against the Carolina Panthers. Here are the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams.

The New York Giants somehow managed to reach a new low on Sunday in Germany, falling to the Carolina Panthers, 20-17, in humiliating overtime fashion.

Whenever we think the Giants have hit rock bottom, they find new and inventive ways to prove there could also be worse.

Truth be told, we’re out of words at this point. We’ve recycled the same post-loss talking points for years and through multiple regimes, and it all just sounds like a broken record. Poor personnel handling, bad play-calling, bad coaching, poor execution, blah, blah, blah…

Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ Week 10 loss.

Offensive snaps: 75
Defensive snaps: 60
Special teams snaps: 30

Quarterback Daniel Jones took 100 percent of the offensive snaps and that’s only noteworthy because under no circumstances should that have been the case. Head coach Brian Daboll should have benched him in the second quarter but admitted after the game he didn’t give it any consideration. Astonishing.

In his return to the starting role, right tackle Evan Neal also took 100 percent of the offensive snaps and unlike Jones, played exceptionally well. Who’d ever expect to read those words?

With Jason Pinnock out, safety Dane Belton took 100 percent of the defensive snaps alongside Tyler Nubin but only one of them played up to snuff. We’ll let you guess which one (hint: it wasn’t Belton).

Giants’ Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns questionable vs. Eagles

The New York Giants have ruled two players out and listed NT Dexter Lawrence and LB Brian Burns as questionable vs. Philadelphia Eagles.

The New York Giants will limp into a Week 7 game against the Philadelphia Eagles down offensive tackle Andrew Thomas (foot) and edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux (wrist), each of whom is on injured reserve (IR).

They will also be without punter Jamie Gillan, who will miss his second consecutive game with a hamstring injury.

In Gillan’s absence, Matt Haack will handle both the punting and holder duties.

Meanwhile, nose tackle Dexter Lawrence (hip) and linebacker Brian Burns (groin) returned to practice on Friday but Daboll stopped short of guaranteeing they would suit up against the Eagles.

Rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, who cleared concussion protocol on Thursday, is expected to play but is now nursing a groin injury.

Giants will have entire roster available in Week 1 vs. Vikings

The New York Giants do not have a single designation on their final injury report and will have the entire roster available for Week 1.

The New York Giants open the 2024 regular season against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Following a summer littered with injuries — several to key players — the Giants will enter Week 1 relatively healthy and with the entirety of their roster available.

“Nope,” head coach Brian Daboll said on Friday when asked if he’d rule anyone out.

Safety Dane Belton (back), linebacker Brian Burns (ankle), quarterback Drew Lock (abdomen), linebacker Micah McFadden (groin), and wide receiver Gunner Olszewski (groin) were limited in Friday’s practice.

Giants injury report: Drew Lock among 4 projected limited participants

New York Giants players were off on Thursday, so the injury report was projected and remained the same with Drew Lock and 3 others limited.

The New York Giants were off on Thursday after conducting a walkthrough on Monday, a fully padded practice on Tuesday, and a normal practice session on Wednesday.

They will return to the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Friday for one final practice ahead of their Week 1 opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

It’s a quirk in the schedule due to the off week between the preseason and the regular season. Beginning next week, it’s likely that team meetings will be held on Monday with the players being given off on Tuesday.

Accordingly, the injury report for Thursday was projected due to players being away from the facility and resting.

The Giants’ full Thursday (projected) injury report, which did not change from a day prior, can be found below:

Limited participant: QB Drew Lock (abdomen), LB Micah McFadden (groin), S Dane Belton (back), WR Gunner Olszewski (groin)

Giants injury report: Drew Lock among four limited in practice

New York Giants QB Drew Lock (hip) was among four players who were limited during Wednesday’s practice in East Rutherford.

The New York Giants took the field for their second full practice of the regular season on Wednesday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and the first official injury report of 2024 was released.

Despite being littered with injuries throughout training camp and the preseason, every single member of the Giants’ 53-man roster and practice squad was on the field participating on at least a limited basis.

Head coach Brian Daboll did reveal one new name being added to the injury report: Safet Dane Belton, who is nursing a sore back.

Meanwhile, quarterback Drew Lock is still dealing with a hip injury suffered during a Week 1 preseason victory over the Detroit Lions.

Giants’ Shane Bowen: Starting safety job ‘is Dane Belton’s to lose’

New York Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen says the starting safety job is “Dane Belton’s to lose.”

The New York Giants selected Minnesota’s Tyler Nubin with the 47th overall pick in this year’s NFL draft with the intention that he would fill the void left by the departure of Xavier McKinney in free agency.

That plan was in place until last week when Nubin was sidelined with a calf injury and replaced by third-year veteran Dane Belton, who is healthy and proving his worth in practices.

Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen said on Thursday that Belton is currently the front-runner for the starting safety job next to Jason Pinnock.

Belton has recently said, he believes the job should be his by right, anyway.

“I’m confident in my abilities,” Belton said, via NJ Advance Media. “I feel like I earned the right to play (more last year). . . This year, I’m trying to take the job.”

That aside, Nubin is working hard to get back on the field. He is doing individuals on Thursday.

Giants’ Dane Belton feels like he deserves starting job

New York Giants third-year safety Dane Belton believes he is in line to fill the void left by the departure of Xavier McKinney.

New York Giants third-year safety Dane Belton was in line for more work after stater Xavier McKinney left for Green Bay via free agency this March.

Then the Giants signed veteran Jalen Mills in free agency and selected Tyler Nubin in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft. Nubin has been penciled in as a starter next to Jason Pinnock, but it’s early.

Nubin is beginning training camp on the sidelines with a calf issue and Mills is currently on the NFI list. This could be Belton’s opportunity to win favor with the coaching staff as he’s getting first-team reps at safety in practice.

“I’m confident in my abilities,” Belton said on Wednesday, via NJ Advance Media. “I feel like I earned the right to play (more last year). . . This year, I’m trying to take the job.”

Last season, Belton was the team’s third safety behind McKinney and Pinnock. McKinney played all 1,128 defensive snaps and Pinnock played on 89.3 percent. Belton played on just 296 of the plays or 26.2 percent.

Belton’s real value to the Giants was more as a special teamer.

“Coming off last year, I feel like I deserve this spot — and I’m going to go out there and earn it for sure. I feel like I’ve earned what I’ve gotten so far (with first-team reps in 2024). Things might change. (But) if I go out and make plays, it’s not going to matter. That’s the mindset.”

Belton was a fourth-round pick of the Giants out of Iowa in 2022. He was a hybrid linebacker/defensive back who the Giants have deployed mainly as a safety on defense.

We won’t know until Nubin hits the field what the Giants’ plans are under first-year coordinator Shane Bowen. We know Belton will play, but in what role and how much?

The Giants are looking for a reliable player to come in and take a ton of snaps like McKinney did last season.

“They’re big shoes,” Belton said. “He’s a really good player. But at the same time, I feel like I can do it. I know I make plays.”

5 players who could have bigger roles for Giants in 2024

These five players could have bigger and more noteworthy roles for the New York Giants during the 2024 regular season.

The New York Giants finished a disappointing 6-11 in 2023, failing to follow up their encouraging 2022 when they went 9-8, won a Wild Card playoff game, and advanced to the NFC Divisional round.

They hope to turn things around in 2024. If they are to do so, they’ll need to get contributions from some of the younger players on their roster who have not yet established themselves.

Here are five players who should have bigger roles in 2024 for the Giants.

Giants injury report: Jason Pinnock continues to miss practice

New York Giants safety Jason Pinnock missed his second day of practice on Thursday and seems unlikely to play in Week 18 against Philly.

The New York Giants returned to the field on Thursday for their first full practice of the week after conducting a walkthrough on Wednesday.

For the second consecutive day, safety Jason Pinnock was sidelined due to injury and appears unlikely to play on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. If he doesn’t, he’ll be spelled by Dane Belton, who registered three takeaways in Week 17.

Belton also missed practice on Thursday, but his absence was unrelated to injury.

Meanwhile, rookie center John Michael Schmitz returned to practice on a limited basis and could play in the team’s season finale.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: S Jason Pinnock (toe), S Dane Belton (not injury-related/personal)

Limited participant: OL John Michael Schmitz (lower leg), CB Detone Banks (shoulder), LB Carter Coughlin (shoulder), CB Darnay Holmes (foot), QB Tyrod Taylor (back)

Full participant: N/A
