Lakers waive Scotty Pippen Jr. and two other players

The Lakers have decided to waive guard Scotty Pippen Jr. and two other players as they prepare for the start of the regular season.

The Los Angeles Lakers are moving toward the start of the 2023-24 regular season, which they hope will be very successful and serve as a lead-in to their 18th NBA championship.

They have played five preseason games so far. Although they’re only 2-3 in those contests, they have shown quite a bit of promise, especially on the offensive end of the court.

Head coach Darvin Ham has played his rookies and young players quite a bit in the second halves of these games, particularly in the fourth quarter. After getting a look at them several times, the team decided to waive three: guard Scotty Pippen Jr, guard Damon Baugh and forward Vincent Valerio-Bodon (h/t Lakers Daily).

Pippen received quite a bit of playing time on Sunday versus the Milwaukee Bucks. He shot 2-of-9 from the field and 4-of-9 from the free-throw line, but he showed great effort and hustle. The son of Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen finished with six assists, four rebounds and three steals.

Lakers sign four players to Exhibit 10 contracts, including Scotty Pippen Jr.

Scotty Pippen Jr., Damion Baugh, Bryce Hamilton and Vincent Valerio-Bodon will get a shot with the Lakers during training camp.

Hours after signing the ultra-skilled but flawed Christian Wood to a two-year contract, the Los Angeles Lakers made moves to round out their roster ahead of training camp.

Wood is projected to play a key role off the bench, at least according to one insider. If he works out and is on his best behavior, he could give the Lakers a significant boost and make them a prolific offensive team this season.

Now, with less than a month remaining before the start of training camp, the team has signed forward Vincent Valerio-Bodon and guards Damion Baugh, Bryce Hamilton and Scotty Pippen Jr to Exhibit 10 contracts.

Of the four, Pippen is the most notable signing. The son of Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, he was with the Lakers last season. Although he only got spot duty, he showed some promise, especially with the South Bay Lakers of the G League, where he averaged 21.4 points and 5.6 assists in 19 games.

Valerio-Bodon stands 6-foot-9 and is originally from Hungary. He appears to have potential as a 3-point shooter, and he made 41.2% of his attempts from that distance last season with Sopron KC of the Hungarian NBIA.

Hamilton was with the South Bay Lakers last season, while Baugh appeared for the organization in this year’s summer league.

2023 Lakers summer league player grades: Damion Baugh

A final look at Damion Baugh’s performance during NBA Summer League play for the Lakers this year.

The 2023 NBA Summer League is now in the books, and it gave a number of players the opportunity to flash their potential and possibly earn a spot in the association.

The Lakers had a mix of can’t-miss players, prospects looking to get playing time with Los Angeles and those fighting for a spot in the league.

This year, they brought along Damion Baugh, a 6-foot-4 guard who went undrafted from Texas Christian University. Baugh has a couple of useful skills that could give him a shot with an NBA team.

The Lakers’ summer league schedule is set

Get ready to watch the Lakers’ youngsters in this year’s summer league, which starts on July 3.

The Los Angeles Lakers will have intriguing young players taking part in summer league play this year.

There is guard Jalen Hood-Schifino, who was selected with the No. 17 pick in Thursday’s draft, and forward Maxwell Lewis, the No. 40 selection. Los Angeles will have several undrafted free agents also taking part: guard D’Moi Hodge, forward Alex Fudge, big man Colin Castleton and guard Damion Baugh.

Two players who were rookies this past season will also play in the summer league: wing Max Christie and forward Cole Swider.

The Lakers’ schedule for summer league play in Las Vegas is set (all times are in Pacific Daylight Time).

In addition, the Lakers will play in two games as part of the California Classic prior to heading to Las Vegas. They will face the Miami Heat on July 3 at 3 p.m. PDT and the San Antonio Spurs two days later at 5 p.m. PDT.

The contest against the Spurs could allow Lakers fans to get a first look at 7-foot-2 Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick who has been described as a generational talent and the most hyped rookie since at least LeBron James.

Lakers sign guard Damion Baugh to Exhibit 10 contract

The Lakers have taken a flyer on another undrafted free agent.

The Los Angeles Lakers drafted Indiana University guard Jalen Hood-Schifino and Pepperdine University wing Maxwell Lewis in the first and second rounds, respectively, of Thursday’s NBA draft. Although the reaction to them taking Hood-Schifino has been mixed, the team has high hopes for both players.

But the two will not be the only prospects Los Angeles looks at.

After the draft, it signed center Colin Castleton and guard D’Moi Hodge as undrafted free agents. Then it snagged forward Alex Fudge on an Exhibit 10 contract.

In addition, the Lakers decided to give an Exhibit 10 deal to Damion Baugh, a guard out of Texas Christian University (h/t Lakers Daily).

Baugh has potential as a penetrator and distributor, as well as a contributor on the defensive end. However, the 6-foot-4 guard isn’t a good 3-point shooter, at least not yet.

A more detailed look at Baugh can be seen here.

2023 Lakers draft prospect profile: Damion Baugh

A look at Damion Baugh, a guard from Texas Christian University.

In all likelihood, the Los Angeles Lakers will need to go out and sign reinforcements at the guard positions.

D’Angelo Russell, Dennis Schroder, Austin Reaves and Lonnie Walker IV will be free agents, and there is almost zero chance that all will still be with the team next season. Backcourt depth was one of the Lakers’ relative strengths this year, and they will want to maintain that strength.

They will have the No. 17 and No. 47 picks in the upcoming draft, but they have also shown an ability to find the occasional gem who didn’t get drafted. One player they recently worked out who could fall into that category is Damion Baugh of Texas Christian University.
