Frank Reich ‘not anticipating any big moves’ at WR after recent injuries

Even with the uncertainty surrounding the hamstring injury to DJ Chark, Panthers HC Frank Reich said he doesn’t anticipate any big moves at the WR position.

Plenty of Carolina Panthers were missing from practice this afternoon, just two days ahead of their preseason finale against the Detroit Lions. And while most of those absences were seemingly no big deal, there’s one that’s sticking out like a sore thumb—or, in this instance, a leg.

When asked about the status of wide receiver DJ Chark following the session, head coach Frank Reich declined to provide any details. A team spokesman would, however, report a hamstring injury for the the 26-year-old.

Chark, who signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Panthers this spring, came into Carolina with quite an extensive injury history. He has yet to play a full season in his five-year NFL career, most recently having missed six games in 2022 due to an ankle injury.

Regardless of what may or may not be another extensive setback, Reich said he doesn’t see the team making any “big” additions at the position.

“Not anticipating any big moves at this point,” he said. “But we’ll continue to evaluate that day by day.”

The Panthers are also currently without Terrace Marshall Jr. (back) and Damiere Byrd (hamstring), who was placed on injured reserve.

Panthers place WR Damiere Byrd on IR, sign DB Collin Duncan

As announced on Wednesday, the Panthers have placed WR Damiere Byrd on injured reserve. DB Collin Duncan will take his place on the roster.

The Carolina Panthers have just signed a new face. But the bigger news, perhaps, is what they had to do to make room for him.

As announced on Wednesday afternoon, the team has added defensive back Collin Duncan. In the corresponding room to free up a roster spot, the Panthers placed wideout Damiere Byrd on the injured reserve list.

Byrd sustained what head coach Frank Reich described as a “significant” hamstring injury back in training camp. Reich initially told reporters that he did not believe the setback was a season-ending development, but one closer to a timeline of about six to eight weeks.

Carolina brought back Byrd, who spent the first four years of his NFL career with the organization, on a one-year deal this spring. The speedy 5-foot-9, 175-pounder was expected to compete for the team’s return duties.

Barring an injury settlement, Byrd’s 2023 campaign is over.

As for the fresh addition, Duncan comes over after having spent time with the Los Angeles Rams this offseason. As the Panthers deal with a few injuries to their cornerback room, the Mississippi State product will serve as some needed depth for Friday’s preseason matchup against the New York Giants.

Damiere Byrd sustained ‘significant’ hamstring injury

Panthers WR Damiere Byrd could be out six to eight weeks with what HC Frank Reich described as a “significant” hamstring injury.

A sparkling summer has come to an end for Carolina Panthers receiver Damiere Byrd.

Following Tuesday’s outing of training camp, head coach Frank Reich confirmed Byrd’s hamstring injury—which was reported on by Joe Person of The Athletic after the wideout’s absence on Sunday. The update was not a particularly encouraging one.

“Damiere’s hamstring is pretty significant. It’s pretty significant,” he said. “It’s gonna be a while. Could require a procedure. So, we’re continuin’ to get him evaluated—which is a shame because he was lookin’ really good. Obviously, he’s put himself in good position, but this was an unfortunate injury.”

Reich then tried to put a timeframe on Byrd’s recovery.

“It’s not season-ending, but it’s significant,” he added. “Like, it’s more than a month. It’s more six, eight weeks—they’re talkin’ more something in that timeframe.”

Byrd, one of the favorites for the punt return job, signed back with the Panthers on a one-year deal this spring.

Panthers training camp tracker: Observations and takeaways from Day 9

Another day, another practice dominated by the Panthers defense.

For the second time in as many mornings, the Carolina Panthers took the unofficial win at training camp.

Here’s the inside info on that performance, and on a handful of other happenings, from Sunday:

Damiere Byrd misses Sunday practice with hamstring injury

According to Joe Person of The Athletic, Panthers WR Damiere Byrd missed Sunday’s practice due to a hamstring injury.

The Carolina Panthers handed out quite a few vet days this morning—with the likes of receiver Adam Thielen, tight end Hayden Hurst and linebacker Shaq Thompson all taking practice off. But one vet had off due to a more painful reason.

As first reported by Joe Person of The Athletic, and later confirmed by Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer, wideout Damiere Byrd was held out of Sunday’s session due to a hamstring injury.

Byrd, who cracked into the NFL as an undrafted with the Panthers in 2015, previously spent four years in Charlotte. Over that time, he reeled in 12 receptions for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The speedy University of South Carolina product then went on to pick up stops with four different teams—the Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons—over the next four campaigns. Byrd returned to the Panthers this spring on a one-year deal.

With Carolina looking for a punt returner to emerge, Byrd should be a contender for the 53-man roster—as long as his wings aren’t clipped.

How much salary cap space the Panthers have after Damiere Byrd signing

Now that the Byrd is back in the nest, let’s take an updated look at the Panthers’ remaining salary cap space.

A Byrd call was made last week, as a familiar face was flown back for a new era of Carolina Panthers football. So, how much did the flight cost?

The details of Damiere Byrd’s contract have been made available. According to Spotrac.com, the 30-year-old wide receiver has returned on the standard one-year, $1.165 million pact—the same numbers the team has already signed defensive end Henry Anderson, linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill, safety Eric Rowe and long snapper JJ Jansen to.

Carolina now sits with approximately $26.91 million of salary cap space, which ranks fourth in the NFL. And here, with Byrd in the nest, are the 2023 cap hits for each of the team’s free-agent signings this offseason:

Revisiting Panthers WR Damiere Byrd’s ‘butt drag swag’ TD

With Damiere Byrd making his return to the Panthers, let’s look back at the most booty-ful touchdown in NFL history.

You may have heard of “toe drag swag,” but what about “butt drag swag”?

If you’re a Carolina Panthers fan, the answer to that is more than likely a  resounding yes. For those who haven’t, however, let’s go back five years and introduce you to the cheekiest touchdown in NFL history.

Brought to you by Friday’s signing of wide receiver Damiere Byrd, our trip into the past takes us to Dec. 17, 2017, when the Panthers hosted the Green Bay Packers for a Week 15 showdown in Charlotte.

With Carolina up 17-14 and the ball at Green Bay’s 9-yard line with just over seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, quarterback Cam Newton found a crack between defensive backs Josh Hawkins and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in the rear of the end zone. There, he connected with the diminutive 5-foot-9 wideout, who was able to avoid the tight coverage of Clinton-Dix and Hawkins, reeling in the toss and parking his keister into the paint.

But did Byrd’s bottom land in the right part of said paint for a touchdown?

The Packers ended up watching those little cheeks pass them by for another six points on a 13-yard reception that gave the Panthers a 31-17 lead at the 12:24 mark of the fourth quarter. Byrd finished the eventual 31-24 win with three catches for 25 yards and the two scores.

After the game, Byrd solidified the name of his preposterous posterior catch:

And now that Byrd got his hindquarters back to Carolina, maybe the end zone at Bank of America Stadium will get double-cheeked up this upcoming season.
