Falcons RB Damien Williams ruled OUT for Week 2

The Atlanta Falcons have ruled RB Damien Williams out for Sunday’s game against the Rams.

The Atlanta Falcons will be without running back Damien Williams for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. After serving as the team’s No. 2 RB in Week 1, Williams missed the last three days of practice due to a rib injury.

Head coach Arthur Smith ruled Williams out following Friday’s practice.

Williams had just two carries for two yards against the Saints. In Week 2, he will likely be replaced in the lineup by rookie Tyler Allgeier, the team’s fifth-round pick out of BYU.

Atlanta’s ground attack was a major bright spot in Week 1, with starting RB Cordarrelle Patterson rushing for 120 yards and a touchdown. Allgeier, who’s more of a power back, should be a good combination to the more elusive Patterson.

The Falcons have their work cut out for them on Sunday as they take on a Rams team that is also coming off a crushing loss in the season opener. The game kicks off at 4:05 p.m. ET in Los Angeles.

Falcons to sign RB Damien Williams, per report

The Falcons are expected to sign free agent Damien Williams, the former Chiefs running back, to a one-year deal.

The Atlanta Falcons have yet to re-sign free agent Cordarrelle Patterson, and it’s looking less likely that the team will get a deal done with the breakout running back.

On Thursday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Falcons are signing free agent Damien Williams, the former Chiefs running back, to a one-year deal.

Williams, 29, is expected to sign a one-year deal in Atlanta. He’s mostly been a career backup, but he provides some depth that can also be a factor in the passing game.

Since entering the league in 2014, Williams has 334 rushing attempts for 1,394 yards and 14 touchdowns, with another 154 catches for 1,209 receiving yards and 11 touchdown receptions.

9 Bears players who seem likely to depart in free agency

Free agency is just around the corner. Here’s a look at some Bears players who appear to be on their way out of Chicago.

Free agency is just around the corner, and new Bears general manager Ryan Poles has plenty of needs to address on offense and defense as he builds a roster.

Wide receiver, offensive line, linebacker and defensive back remain Chicago’s biggest positions of concern, and there are plenty of intriguing options on the market. The good news is the Bears have roughly $26 million in salary cap space to work with — and that’s before making any other moves such as cutting some expensive veterans or restructuring contracts.

While Chicago is expected to lose some significant contributors, including Allen Robinson and Akiem Hicks, they’re very much in the thick of things when it comes to acquiring compensatory picks for those departures.

Here’s a look at nine Bears players who appear to be on their way out of Chicago in free agency:

Bears 2022 offseason preview: Where does Chicago stand at RB?

We’re breaking down each position entering the 2022 offseason. Next is RB, where the future’s bright with David Montgomery, Khalil Herbert.

The Chicago Bears have a clean slate after hiring new general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus, who will be looking to get this franchise back on track in 2022.

With the offseason in full swing, Poles has plenty of work to do with the current roster, which features some glaring holes at positions of need. Poles will have to decide who to re-sign, who to let walk and who to target outside of the current roster heading into free agency and the NFL draft.

Here at Bears Wire, we’re going position by position to break down where Chicago stands entering the 2022 offseason. Next up is running back, which features some bright stars in David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert.

Bears 2021 rookie season review: RB Khalil Herbert

Khalil Herbert was arguably the Bears’ rookie of the year last season, where he made the most out of his opportunities.

The Chicago Bears drafted seven players in the 2021 NFL draft, where a number of them made significant contributions on offense, defense or special teams during their rookie season.

Though Justin Fields got all of the shine last season, the team’s rookie of the year was arguably Khalil Herbert. The running back out of Virginia Tech was drafted in the sixth round last year and was pressed into starting duty thanks to injuries and made the most of his opportunity.

We’re taking a look into Herbert’s rookie year and how he might project going forward.

8 pending free agents the Bears should let walk in 2022

Ahead of free agency, we’re looking at some in-house free agents the Bears should let walk in 2022.

The offseason is in full swing, and we’re just over a month away from the start of the new league year and free agency. And the Bears have some important decisions to make when it comes to in-house free agents.

The Bears are slated to have nearly $30 million in salary cap space, but there are plenty of holes to fill on the roster for new general manager Ryan Poles. Perhaps some of those roster spots will be filled by some of Chicago’s in-house free agents. But there are just some veterans who won’t or shouldn’t be brought back.

Bears 2021 RB review: Future is bright with David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert

We’re taking a look at how the Bears running backs fared in 2021.

The Chicago Bears wrapped another disappointing season that resulted in the firings of general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy. With the offseason in full swing, it provides an opportunity for the new regime in GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus to look back at went right, what went wrong and how to improve in 2022.

Here at Bears Wire, we’re going position by position through the 2021 Bears and grading every player. Next up is running back, which proved to be one of the most reliable position groups.

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce now owns most postseason TDs in franchise history

With his overtime game-winning touchdown grab, Travis Kelce passed former #Chiefs RB Damien Williams for the most postseason TDs in franchise history.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes wasn’t the only one breaking records on Sunday night.

After scoring the game-winning touchdown in overtime, Chiefs TE Travis Kelce now has 11 career postseason touchdowns. That number is good for the most ever by any player in franchise history, ousting former Chiefs RB Damien Williams who was tied with Kelce for the lead at 10.

Here is a look at the postseason leaderboard for Kansas City after this game:

  1. Travis Kelce: 11 TDs
  2. Damien Williams: 10 TDs
  3. Tyreek Hill & Patrick Mahomes (tie): 5 TDs
  4. Marcus Allen, Mike Garrett and Knile Davis (tie): 3 TDs

The 10 touchdowns for Williams are still super impressive because he did so in five career games. By comparison, it took Kelce 14 career games to get to 11 touchdowns.

Kelce is one step closer to tying former Steelers great John Stallworth for the third-most postseason touchdown receptions in NFL history. He needs one touchdown in next week’s game to tie Stallworth’s 12 career receiving touchdowns. Kelce also needs four more touchdowns to tie Buccaneers TE Rob Gronkowski for the most postseason touchdowns by a tight end in NFL history.

Another leaderboard that Kelce is moving up is the all-time postseason receptions list. He now has 96 receptions in the postseason which is good for the fourth-most in NFL history. He trails only Gronkowski (98), Julian Edelman (118) and Jerry Rice (151).

It’s just another weekly reminder from Kelce that he’s the best to ever do it, postseason and otherwise.

Bears RB Damien Williams downgraded to doubtful vs. Ravens

The Bears have downgraded RB Damien Williams to doubtful vs. Ravens with a calf injury.

The Chicago Bears have suffered some big blows on the injury front this week, and it sounds like they’ll be without another player when they welcome the Baltimore Ravens to town.

Running back Damien Williams, who has been dealing with a calf injury, has been downgraded to doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Ravens. Williams practiced all week for Chicago and was listed with a knee injury.

Now, it appears that Williams suffered a calf injury during practice, and he won’t be ready to go Sunday.

Luckily for the Bears, they have David Montgomery back and rookie Khalil Herbert as a reserve, so they should be fine at the running back position.

The Bears will be without defensive tackle Akiem Hicks (ankle), who’s been ruled out, as well as wide receiver Allen Robinson (hamstring), who’s officially doubtful. That, as well as outside linebacker Khalil Mack landing on injured reserve with season-ending foot surgery.

There is some encouraging news as safety Eddie Jackson is on track to return as he’s officially questionable and safety Deon Bush is on track to be activated off IR.
