Report: Nets’ Dennis Smith Jr. under consideration by Mavericks

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that Brooklyn Nets guard Dennis Smith Jr. is under free-agent consideration by the Dallas Mavericks.

The Brooklyn Nets have not made many moves during this offseason other than trading Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks and getting some of their draft picks back from the Houston Rockets. While re-signing center Nic Claxton was Brooklyn’s main task in free-agency, they could lose one of their guards to another team.

Per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Nets guard Dennis Smith Jr. is one of the players that may be getting pursued by other teams in free-agency. However, if the Nets are going to make sure that there is enough depth on the team as it goes through its rebuild, Smith will be one of the guys that may not be in the plans moving forward.

The Dallas Mavericks have considered bringing one of two former guards back to the team, Spencer Dinwiddie and Dennis Smith Jr., league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote. Dinwiddie is no longer on the team after being traded away by Brooklyn at the trade deadline in a deal that brought in Dennis Schroder from the Toronto Raptors, but Smith finished the season with the Nets as the backup point guard.

Scotto reported earlier in the summer that Smith wouldn’t be opposed to coming back to Brooklyn, but he is looking for a multi-year deal in free-agency. Whether the Nets are willing to give that to him this summer remains to be seen, but if they are not, Smith could be playing for a Mavericks team that made it all the way to the NBA Finals.

Watch: Warriors share tribute video for Klay Thompson

With Klay Thompson’s sign-and-trade with the Mavericks complete, the Warriors shared a tribute video for the guard on social media.

Klay Thompson’s chapter with the Golden State Warriors is over. The NBA’s first-ever six-team trade, which was headlined by Thompson’s departure from Golden State to the Dallas Mavericks, is officially official, marking the end of a decorated 13-season run in the Bay Area that featured four championships.

While Thompson has already bid farewell to the Bay Area on Instagram, the Warriors took to social media to pay tribute to their now-former All-Star shooting guard. The Warriors shared a flurry of content based around Thompson on Twitter, including an emotional tribute video for the four-time champion.

Starting with the moment he was drafted by the Warriors, the video featured moments from Thompson’s career, including his return from injury and his memorable game-six performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016. The video also included words from Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Steve Kerr.

Rumor: OKC Thunder had interest in Klay Thompson

Rumor: OKC Thunder had interest in Klay Thompson

With over $30 million in cap space, the Oklahoma City Thunder had a chance to sign practically any free agent. This likely led to conversations about every notable player available this offseason.

According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, included Klay Thompson, who was set to leave the Golden State Warriors. The 34-year-old ultimately signed with the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million deal.

“The Thunder also were interested in Thompson but ended up prioritizing big man Isaiah Hartenstein with their cap space.”

Now that would’ve been an interesting alternative timeline. It would’ve been a rough pitch to make to Thunder fans, who’ve come to shiver every time Thompson’s mentioned.

The four-time NBA champion played a massive role in the Thunder’s demise from the Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook era. His playoff outing in the 2016 Western Conference Finals helped Golden State claw back from a 3-1 deficit.

On the court though, Thompson would’ve been an excellent fit for OKC. He’d be a great 3-and-D starter who has a championship pedigree. Even though his best days are behind him, he’d be a perfect addition to the Thunder.

Thompson averaged 17.9 points on 43.2% shooting, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He shot 38.7% from 3 on nine attempts. He played in 77 games last season.

The sharpshooter would’ve brought a new element to OKC’s offense that it lacked last season with a high-volume outside shooter. There was a degree of mutual interest as Thompson was intrigued by the possibility.

Alas, Thompson signed with the Mavericks. The Thunder used their cap space to add Hartenstein. Such is NBA free agency, which is littered with what-if scenarios.

The NBA’s second apron rules have already made free agency boring

Only 4 NBA teams are in the second apron. That speaks volumes.

We anticipated that the NBA’s second apron rules would have a major ripple effect on the league landscape. I don’t think anyone, sans some general managers, saw what they would do to free agency.

Roughly two days into the NBA’s open market period, we’ve seen most squads around the league approach their spending cautiously. Rather than throw around money willy-nilly like in years past, it is clear that teams are noticeably more gunshy about throwing around monster contracts, especially to non-star players.

While most of the big fish are off the board — like Paul George with the Philadelphia 76ers and Klay Thompson with the Dallas Mavericks — there is a glut of “middle-class” talent still waiting for new commitments. It’s made the whole familiar free agency exercise, once a highly-anticipated staple of the NBA calendar, a bit rote and anticlimactic.

What happened to the game we love?

Perhaps most importantly, as it stands, just four NBA teams have willingly stayed in the NBA’s second apron. Here they are, as follows, with their unique ownership situation in parentheses:

Everyone else, including recent NBA champions such as Nikola Jokic’s Denver Nuggets and Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Milwaukee Bucks, have trod lightly when it comes to the second apron. That speaks volumes.

It’s worth noting that the second apron isn’t technically a hard cap, even though the discussion has veered that way. Teams currently sitting in the second apron can keep extending players already on their roster as much as they please. It’s more that sitting in the second apron for an extended period is a calculated risk that NBA squads have to be prepared for, given the lack of on-the-fly flexibility it presents in here and now and the future.

Because once you’re in the second apron, most maneuverability is gone, and you’re at the mercy of hoping that life doesn’t get in the way.

(Hint: It often does.)

Teams like the Nuggets and Bucks may well enter the second apron in the near future once they recognize it’s time to really maximize the primes of Jokic and Antetokounmpo. They just weren’t going to do it for names like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, even with him being as dependable as he is. I’m also not sure what it means that the four current second-apron NBA teams all have chaotic ownership situations to some degree, but it has to have some kind of correlation.

In the end, as basketball fans, we all lose here.

There will be less player movement on the macro, and great teams will be more cautious with their spending. That, in turn, will reduce some of the wonderful drama we’ve come to expect from the NBA offseason. So, don’t expect the second-apron group to meaningfully expand in scope anytime soon.

In the name of forced, frustrating artificial parity, this is exactly what the NBA wanted. It’s a lot less entertaining, that’s for sure.

Report: Warriors receiving two second round picks in Klay Thompson sign-and-trade with Mavericks

The Warriors are reportedly set to receive a pair of future second round picks in Klay Thompson’s sign-and-trade with the Mavericks.

Klay Thompson’s legendary run with the Golden State Warriors is set to come to an end. After 13 seasons with the Warriors, Thompson will reportedly join the Dallas Mavericks on a new three-year, $50 million contract.

Before Thompson can join Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in the Lone Star State, the Mavericks and Warriors needed to agree to terms on a sign-and-trade. In a multi-team sign-and-trade, the Charlotte Hornets reportedly received Josh Green from Dallas, while the Warriors would receive draft compensation from Dallas.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Warriors will receive two second-round picks in the sign-and-trade.

The Warriors will also pick up a traded player exception worth just under $16 million that they can use in a future move. The pair of first-round picks are reportedly Dallas’ in 2031 and the least favorable between Philadelphia and Denver in 2025.

Report: Klay Thompson signing with Mavericks as part of multi-team sign-and-trade

The franchise legend is reportedly signing with the Dallas Mavericks as part of a multi-team sign-and trade.

After multiple reports have indicated the Golden State Warriors and Klay Thompson were preparing to part ways following a legendary run that included four championships, the 34-year-old sharpshooter is reportedly heading to Dallas to join the defending Western Conference champions.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Thompson is planning to sign a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks as part of a multi-team sign-and-trade that will include the Charlotte Hornets. The Mavericks are trading Josh Green to the Hornets as a part of the deal, per Wojnarowski.

Via @wojespn on Twitter

Alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, Thompson was a core piece of Golden State’s dynastic run. Thompson served as one of Golden State’s “Splash Brothers” next to Curry, reigning down 3-pointers on the way to multiple NBA Finals appearances and four championships.

After he was drafted by the Warriors in 2011 out of Washington State in the first round, Thompson played the next 13 seasons in the Bay Area (missing two seasons due to injury). During his time with the Warriors, Thompson made five appearances in the All-Star game and earned spots on two All-NBA teams.

In 11 seasons, Thompson averaged 19.6 points per game on 45.3% shooting from the field and 41.3% from beyond the arc. Thompson made 200 or more 3-pointers in 11 seasons, including a league-best 301 in 2022-23. Thompson trails on Steph Curry on Golden State’s all-time made 3-pointer list.

Thompson will now join Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving on the team that represented the Western Conference in the NBA Finals last season.

The remaining details of the sign-and-trade, including Golden State’s side of the deal have yet to be released.

Report: Klay Thompson and Warriors preparing to part ways in free agency

Klay Thompson and the Warriors are reportedly preparing to part ways.

The start of free agency on Sunday could mark the end of an era for the Golden State Warriors. As Klay Thompson is preparing to become on unrestricted free agent, the Warriors are reportedly bracing for the end of an era.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Warriors are preparing to lose Thompson in free agency. Thompson could be the first member of Golden State’s legendary trio, which also includes Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, to leave the franchise after winning four championships together in the Bay Area.

Via @ShamsCharania on Twitter:

Since being drafted out of Washington State in the first round of the 2011 NBA draft, Thompson has spent his entire 11 career with the Warriors. During his campaign, Thompson has been responsible for a flurry of legendary moments on and off the court, including championships, All-Star games, signing toasters, barrages of 3-pointers and clutch performances in different playoff games.

During his 11-year run with the Warriors, Thompson averaged 19.6 points per game on 45.3% shooting from the field and 41.3% from beyond the arc. Thompson is second to only behind Curry in Golden State’s franchise 3-point field goals. Thompson ranks in the top 10 of multiple categories of the franchise record books.

Thompson is coming off an up and down season in 2023-24 where he came off the bench for the first time in his career. Thompson played 77 games, averaging 17.9 points on 43.2% shooting from the field and 38.7% from deep.

Dane Goodwin will play for Sacramento Kings in NBA Summer League

Irish basketball fans will have at least one reason to watch summer action.

As expected, nobody from Notre Dame was selected in Thursday’s NBA draft. In fact, only five ACC players were picked. But that doesn’t opportunities don’t exist for undrafted free agents to land two-way contracts and NBA Summer League opportunities. For former Notre Dame guard [autotag]Dane Goodwin[/autotag], it’s the latter:

Goodwin just completed his fifth and final season with the Irish. Over his collegiate career, he averaged 10.8 points and 4.4 rebounds a game. In 2022, he made the All-ACC Third Team. Now, he’ll see how well he translates at a higher level of basketball.

If a certain trade hadn’t been made, Goodwin would have had a Notre Dame connection for a teammate. The Kings drafted Marquette’s Olivier-Maxence Prosper, the brother of Irish women’s basketball player [autotag]Cassandre Prosper[/autotag], with the 24th overall pick. They then traded  the rights Prosper to the Dallas Mavericks in an effort to gain cap space ahead of free agency. Oh well.
