Bulls Summer League: 3 top performers from loss to Grizzlies

These were the top three performers from the Chicago Bulls’ Summer League win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

On Saturday night, the Chicago Bulls took on the Memphis Grizzlies in their second Summer League game of the offseason, but they didn’t get the result they wanted. Chicago dropped the game, falling to the Grizzlies by a score of 87-80, but Summer League isn’t necessarily about wins and losses.

While Chicago would obviously love to win every game of Summer League, the event is more about evaluating talent than it is about winning each contest. And for the Bulls, adding new young talent to the roster will be key if they hope to compete for a playoff spot and maintain a solid future.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the three top performers from the Bulls’ loss to the Grizzlies.

Bulls Summer League Notebook: A new Chicago Darling, Terry’s struggles

In their first Summer League game, the Chicago Bulls took down the Toronto Raptors, so let’s take a look at some notes.

The Chicago Bulls competed in their first game of Summer League action on Friday night. They took down the Toronto Raptors in an ugly slugfest that ended in a very low score of 83-74. Obviously, a solid takeaway from that score could be the great defense being played, but in reality, it was just a healthy reminder that Summer League is Summer League for a reason.

Chicago rolled out a 10-man lineup, with Will Yoakum and Tyree Appleby being the only two players who didn’t see the court. As a team, the Bulls shot just 39.0% from the field and 34.5% from deep. Definitely not ideal.

With that said, we’ll be starting a notebook, recapping some of the top points from each Summer League game. Let’s take a look at Game 1.

Bulls Patrick Williams, Dalen Terry join DeMar DeRozan for LA workouts

Two Chicago Bulls youngsters – Patrick Williams and Dalen Terry – recently joined DeMar DeRozan in LA for workouts.

As the Chicago Bulls enter the offseason, they will have a ton of tough decisions to make in regard to their roster. Arturas Karnisovas is determined to run things back, and if that’s the plan, they need to add some serious talent around the core of Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic.

However, in addition to the need for outside help, Chicago will also need to lean on internal development if they hope to improve next year. And based on recent indications, the team’s young players are already in the lab working on their games in preparation for next year.

According to the Bulls’ official Twitter account, Patrick Williams and Dalen Terry, two of the team’s youngsters, joined DeRozan for workouts in Los Angeles last week.

Chicago is in desperate need of depth at the forward position, so if Williams and Terry can make strides heading into next year, it would be huge for the Bulls.

Williams is up for a contract extension this summer and could earn a decent chunk of change, but next year could end up being the deciding season for him. If the Bulls hold off on an extension, Williams’ price could go way up should he show signs of improvement.

As for Terry, he will be looking to emerge as a rotational piece next year after receiving little playing time during his rookie year.

Both forwards seem to have potential, and if they get in the lab with DeRozan over the summer, they should be able to build the right habits.

Bulls guard Dalen Terry working out with Harrison Barnes, NBA players

Chicago Bulls youngster Dalen Terry has been working out with Harrison Barnes and other NBA players this summer.

This past season was a disappointment for the Chicago Bulls. After making the playoffs for the first time in four years in 2021-22, they missed out in 2022-23, getting eliminated in the Play-In Tournament by the eventual Eastern Conference champions, the Miami Heat. Now, they’ll have to bank on a mix of external and internal improvement heading into next year.

While adding pieces through free agency and the trade market will be key, the internal development of the Bulls’ players will also be crucial. One of those guys is Dalen Terry, who just wrapped up his rookie season. He’ll be looking to make strides.

According to Daniel Greenberg, Terry has been working out with a number of NBA players this offseason, such as Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes.

“Chicago Bulls guard Dalen Terry has been training with several NBA players so far this offseason including Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes,” Greenberg tweeted.

Terry didn’t earn many opportunities with Chicago this past season at the NBA or G League level. He only appeared in four NBA games and three G League games, but he did show some potential.

With the lack of wing and forward depth Chicago has on the roster, Terry has a real chance to earn some minutes. Despite being listed as a guard, Terry is 6-foot-7 and can play up a bit if needed.

If Terry can develop a consistent three-point shot, which he’s shown at times, and continue to improve on the defensive end, he could be an impact player in Chicago.

Bulls’ Coby White, Dalen Terry working with DeMar DeRozan’s trainer

Chicago Bulls guards Coby White and Dalen Terry are in the lab working with DeMar DeRozan’s trainer.

Heading into the summer, the Chicago Bulls will have to make some serious roster decisions. A big part of that will be adding free agents and attacking the trade market, as the roster, as currently constructed, isn’t guaranteed to be a playoff team. External aid will help the Bulls push forward, but so will internal development.

With Lonzo Ball likely to be sidelined for the entirety of next season, Chicago’s guards will have some big opportunities. Chicago needs to re-sign Coby White, but he could earn extra minutes, as could Dalen Terry, who just wrapped up his rookie season. Both are working on their games this summer.

According to Daniel Greenberg, both White and Terry are working with DeMar DeRozan‘s trainer, Johnny Stephene, who specializes in ball handling.

“Chicago Bulls guards Coby White and Dalen Terry have been training with DeMar DeRozan’s trainer Johnny Stephene who specializes in ball handling,” Greenberg tweeted.

White burst onto the scene a bit in the latter stages of this past season, earning more opportunities as the year wound down. He’ll be battling with Ayo Dosunmu, Alex Caruso, and Terry for guard minutes.

Meanwhile, Terry spent most of his rookie year on the bench, with a few games played in the G League. He showed some solid potential, and the Bulls could be smart to give him some more looks in the rotation next season.

For a Chicago squad led by a core group of veterans, building up a young core will be key to brightening their future.

Dalen Terry ‘should be ready’ for bigger role on Chicago Bulls

After a rookie season spent on the sidelines, Dalen Terry could be ready for a larger role on the Chicago Bulls.

As the Chicago Bulls prepare to balance out their roster this summer, they will have some tough decisions to make. Among them will be whether or not to re-sign Nikola Vucevic, whether or not to trade Zach LaVine and/or DeMar DeRozan, and how much to offer Coby White. However, they have some rotational decisions to make, too.

Dalen Terry is coming off of a rookie season where he didn’t earn much playing time. Chicago’s 2022 first-round pick played well in the G League (in just three games) but didn’t have much of a role at the NBA level. However, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac, he could be ready for a bigger role next season.

Smith wrote an offseason preview for every NBA team, and when the Bulls came up, he discussed Terry’s potential role in Chicago’s rotation next year.

“Dalen Terry’s rookie season was mostly spent watching,” Smith wrote. “He rarely played meaningful NBA minutes. In the G League, Terry flashed the ability that made him a mid-first-round pick. There’s talent there, and Terry should be ready to take on a bigger role.”

Terry only got to play in three G League games for the Windy City Bulls last year, but he looked good in those appearances. The 20-year-old rookie averaged 19.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game on 47.7 percent shooting from the floor and 41.7 percent shooting from behind the three-point line.

If the 6-foot-7 forward could bring even a small piece of that talent to the NBA level, he could be a great contributor for Chicago.

Bulls’ Dalen Terry registers 4th double-digit-scoring game in G League

Terry is now averaging 14.3 points, seven rebounds, five assists and one steal in the G League.

Chicago Bulls rookie Dalen Terry reached double figures in scoring for the fourth time this season in the NBA G League Saturday on assignment with the Windy City Bulls.

Terry produced 11 points, six rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot in a 99-94 loss to the Sioux Falls Skyforce. He went 3-of-9 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line in nearly 31 minutes of work as Windy City dropped to 5-2.

The 18th pick struggled to shoot: He missed all four of his 3-point attempts. However, he had some strong takes down low in the paint that showed his ability to finish through contact.

The appearance by Terry was his fourth in the G League with playing time at a premium in Chicago. He has totaled 29 minutes across nine games with the parent team in mostly mop-up duty with several players ahead of him on the depth chart.

Terry even asked the team to play in the G League to get consistent minutes and stay sharp on the court. He is averaging 14.3 points, seven rebounds, five assists and one steal on 51.2% shooting from the field in 31.5 minutes.

The opportunity to play with Windy City will give him a great chance to continue the transition to the NBA and work on his overall game. He is showing in spurts why the team took him in the first round as he could eventually develop into a rotation player.

‘I wanted to go’: Dalen Terry on embracing his time in G League

The Bulls rookie chose to join the Windy City Bulls for more opportunity.

The Chicago Bulls rookie Dalen Terry resurfaced with the team after a two-game stint in the G League with the Windy City Bulls.

For Terry, after only playing a total of 22 minutes this season with the Bulls, his assignment with in the G League was welcomed.

“I wanted to go,” Terry said following Windy City’s win on Sunday. “I’ve been asking to go down.”

In two games with Windy City on Saturday and Sunday, Terry averaged 16 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game.

“I just love to play basketball,” Terry said. “I’m not here for the money or anything like that. I just love to play. If it’s limited time up here, I’d rather go down there and work on some things.”

On Saturday, Terry had a near triple-double in Windy City’s 126-121 win, finishing with 18 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. On Sunday, Terry had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the 121-105 victory.

Following Windy City’s game on Sunday, Terry rejoined the Bulls for their 126-103 loss against the Denver Nuggets, scoring five points in five minutes in garbage time.

“It was a great experience. It felt good to go against somebody besides the imagination in my head,” the Bulls rookie said. “There’s no better way to get back into game shape than going down and playing some games.”

Bulls’ Dalen Terry to suit up for Windy City in G League

Terry was assigned to the Windy City Bulls in the G League and is expected to play on Saturday versus the Iowa Wolves.

Chicago Bulls rookie Dalen Terry on Saturday was assigned to the Windy City Bulls in the NBA G League and is expected to play versus the Iowa Wolves.

The move comes as Terry has totaled just 22 minutes of work across seven appearances. Bulls head coach Billy Donovan on Friday said it was likely Terry would play in at least one of Windy City’s two games this weekend versus Iowa.

Heading into the season, Terry knew playing time could be scarce with so many players ahead of him on the depth chart. He knew he could eventually see time with Windy City and welcomed the opportunity to play there to develop and see consistent minutes.

[mm-video type=video id=01ghkms3pmk8szpjabz2 playlist_id=01f09kz5ecxq9bp57b player_id=01f1jxkahtwnvzepyp image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01ghkms3pmk8szpjabz2/01ghkms3pmk8szpjabz2-d694b81379d0c1ac5ea810e4c9e5d335.jpg]

The Bulls loved the addition of Terry given his ability to play both ends and bring immense energy and effort to the court. He may be out of the rotation for now, but that could change seemingly at any time. He is staying ready for that opportunity.
