Pitsburgh Steelers release former Georgia running back

The Pittsburgh Steelers have cut a former Georgia football running back ahead of the roster deadline

The Pittsburgh Steelers released former Georgia Bulldogs running back Daijun Edwards. Edwards went undrafted in the 2024 NFL draft after a four-season college career with the Georgia Bulldogs. Edwards totaled over 2,000 rushing yards and scored 24 touchdowns during his time at Georgia.

Edwards had bright moments with Steelers, but it was not enough for him to make the 53-man roster. Edwards recorded seven carries for 37 yards and one touchdown this preseason.

Now, Edwards looks to sign with another team or hope to land a practice squad deal. Edwards has a shifty running style and is a solid pass catcher. He does not have the biggest frame and is not the fastest running back, but he was quite productive at the college level. He will likely get another look from an NFL team.

The 2024 NFL roster deadline is Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. ET. NFL teams must trim their squads to 53 players in what is always a difficult day for many pros across the league.

Grading four Georgia running backs in the NFL: Preseason Week One

Four UGA running backs took a lot snaps in the preseason. We grade their respective performances

There were four former Georgia Bulldogs that had significant carries this past week of preseason football: Daijun Edwards, Kendall Milton, Kenny McIntosh, and Zamir White. Today, I’ll give a grade on their performance from what I saw.

Daijun Edwards, Pittsburgh Steelers

Opponent & Result: Houston Texans, L 12-20

Statline: 3 carries, 28 yards, 1 rushing touchdown, 1 reception, 9 yards, 1 kick return, 27 yards

Edwards was used in several instances today: as a kick returner for the Steelers (which has become less physically taxing under the new kickoff rules), and as the lead running back during the 4th quarter. His biggest run was a 24-yard gain that almost saw him punch it into the end zone early in the 4th, and he would on the next play.

The Steelers offensive line was effective at blocking for him, but he showed some legitimate agility, especially on his reception, where he juked a defender and almost moved the chains on a check down from Kyle Allen. Time will tell if he makes the 53-man roster, but the undrafted pickup for the Steelers definitely improved his case.

Grade: A

Kendall Milton, Philadelphia Eagles

Opponent & Result: Baltimore Ravens, W 16-13

Statline: 9 carries, 39 yards, 1 target

Milton looked less impressive than Edwards, although he had more yards and carries. He did use his trademark downhill running style from UGA to run out several minutes of the clock and help the Eagles get into range to kick the game-winning field goal. He had a target, but QB Tanner McKee threw it too far right.

He showed patience until he could find a hole from the offensive line, especially on some eight and nine yard gains when he was running up the middle. The Eagles running back room is crowded, with five running backs got 20+ yards on the day (not including Saquon Barkley) but with more showings like this, he can also make the 53-man roster as a depth back behind Barkley and Kenneth Gainwell for the Eagles.

Grade: B

Kenny McIntosh, Seattle Seahawks

Opponent & Result: Los Angeles Chargers, W 16-3

Statline: 8 carries, 40 yards, 2 receptions, 1 yard

McIntosh, who’s more experienced than Edwards and Milton, had a stellar game in the preseason. He came in during the 2nd drive of the game for Seattle and immediately had two impressive runs for five and 14 yards. He would have had another four-yard run if not for a holding penalty. Then, on a broken screen play, he juked through one defender, but couldn’t shake his jersey off the Charger’s defender’s hands, losing three yards.

On the next drive, he went back to work, converting two first downs in two drives with a four yard run and reception. Both those plays helped extend two touchdown drives for the Seahawks. Right now, he’s slated as the third back behind Zach Charbonnet and Kenneth Walker III, but if one of the two are out for a while, he could potentially see an extended workload. Regardless, he looks in good shape to get his first carries in his career (in the regular season).

Grade: A

Zamir White, Las Vegas Raiders

Opponent and Result: Minnesota Vikings, L 23-24

Statline: 6 carries, 23 yards, 1 touchdown

No doubt, 1st-round pick Brock Bowers was the most notable former Bulldog on the Raiders, but former Bulldog Zamir White also started for the Raiders today. He mostly got tough, physical four-five yard runs. White showed his strength on the run where he found paydirt, bulldozing through a couple Minnesota defenders to add on to the Raiders lead.

Other than that, White wasn’t asked to do much. The Raiders are looking to solve a quarterback competition between Gardner Minshew II and Aidan O’Connell, so the game script relied on mostly passes from both. He is also the favorite to be the lead back for the Raiders in the regular season, so his roster spot is all but secure.

Grade: C

Former Alabama running back trolls Georgia rookie in minicamp

Former Alabama Crimson Tide running back Najee Harris did not take it easy on a former Georgia rookie in minicamp

Former Alabama Crimson Tide running back Najee Harris trolled former Georgia Bulldogs rookie Daijun Edwards in minicamp. Harris and Edwards are now teammates for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

However, that did not stop Najee Harris from really challenging Daijun Edwards during a minicamp drill. Harris forced Edwards to drop the ball several times in a drill designed to help players work on securing catches away from defenders. It is safe to say that Harris did not take it easy on Edwards.

Life as a rookie in the NFL is tough. Rookies have to try to learn a new playbook, a new city and adjust to the speed of the NFL. Najee Harris makes it clear from his drill against Daijun Edwards that he does not like Georgia. Strong language used in video.

Steelers could keep 3 UDFAs this season

The Steelers have some solid undrafted players who could make the final roster.

The level of detail the Pittsburgh Steelers put into the entire process from the 2024 NFL draft to the undrafted free-agency period has been a clinic in finding athletes to fill the team’s most significant needs.

Pittsburgh signed a particularly small group of UDFAs this year but it is all part of their plan. If the players signed, we like three of them to make the team either as part of the 53-man roster or on the practice squad.

First up we have cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr. Physical, scrappy, quick and strong against the run sounds like a Steelers slot cornerback to me. The team is excited about what Bishop brings as a sort of hybrid cornerback/safety up and around the line of scrimmage and he has a real shot to make the final roster.

The Steelers went out and signed quarterback John Rhys Plumlee based on his remarkable athleticism and intangibles. All Plumlee needs to do in order to make the roster is beat out veteran Kyle Allen.

Finally, we have running back Daijun Edwards. More football player than athlete, Edwards was particularly productive at Georgia around the end zone and with the team in need of a No. 3 running back, he could slide right into that role without much competition.

Steelers agree to terms with Georgia UDFA RB Daijun Edwards

The Steelers agreed to terms with their first UDFA Daijun Edwards.

It didn’t take long before Georgia Bulldog Daijun Edwards found an NFL home. According to his representatives, SportsTrust Advisors, the Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms with the running back.

Edwards was a productive member of the Bulldogs in all four seasons after signing as a four-star recruit in 2020. The 5-foot-10 back led Georgia in rushing last season, finishing with 880 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns.

Edwards should be a solid depth piece in a room that currently includes starters Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren and Cordarrelle Patterson and Aaron Shampklin.

Here’s what NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein had to say about Edwards:

Edwards has done a solid job of handling his business and helping the Georgia offense over the last two seasons. He’s slightly undersized as an early-down back, but it doesn’t hold him back as an interior runner with good contact balance and run strength. Edwards is an unorthodox runner with the ability to side-step the first tackler, but his run tends to get bogged down after that, as other defenders rally and scoop him up. He reads blockers fairly well and can squeeze through the crevices, but he lacks the consistent quickness needed to stay ahead of NFL defenses. Edwards should battle for a roster spot as a Day 3 pick.

Georgia RB Daijun Edwards accepts Senior Bowl invite

Georgia Bulldogs running back Daijun Edwards accepts Senior Bowl invite

Georgia running back Daijun Edwards has accepted an invitation to participate in the annual Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile next week, becoming the seventh Bulldog to do so.

Edwards recently declared for the 2024 NFL draft after completing a four-year career at Georgia, where he played in a total of 51 games. Throughout his time at UGA, Edwards recorded 391 carries for 2,082 yards and 24 touchdowns. Additionally, he gained 343 receiving yards on 37 catches.

Edwards played his biggest role for the Bulldogs in 2023 along side Kendall Milton, who also entered this year’s draft. An MCL injury bothered Edwards for most of the season and caused him to miss two games. Still, he was willing to play while not at full strength and went on to rush for a career-best 880 yards on 165 carries (5.3 yard average) and 13 touchdowns.

Joining Edwards at the Senior Bowl will be wide receivers Ladd McConkey and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, offensive lineman Sedrick Van Pran, defensive backs Javon Bullard and Tykee Smith and long snapper William Mote. The Senior Bowl will culminate with a scrimmage on Feb. 3rd.

Georgia’s leading rusher accepts Senior Bowl invitation

Georgia’s leading rusher and top receiving back has accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl

Georgia Bulldogs leading rusher Daijun Edwards is the seventh former Bulldog to accept an invitation to play in the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl. Edwards previously declared for the 2024 NFL draft after the 2023 college football season.

The Senior Bowl will be played on Feb. 3 at 1:00 p.m. ET in Mobile, Alabama. The Senior Bowl is the most important predraft scrimmage for NFL draft scouts. Practices between the former college stars participating in the Senior Bowl begin in the week leading up to the game. The week is an excellent time for NFL scouts to evaluate and interview top college prospects.

Daijun Edwards totaled 2,083 yards and 24 touchdowns during his Georgia career. In 2023, he had a team-high 881 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Edwards was also Georgia’s top receiving back for the 2023 college football season. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound running back has the versatility that NFL teams are looking for.

Edwards is very difficult to tackle despite not having the most impressive measurables. Edwards helped Georgia win two national championships with his shifty moves and excellent vision. The Senior Bowl represents an excellent opportunity for him to boost his NFL draft stock. Edwards has a unique playing style the churns out yardage and was very effective in the SEC.

Georgia leading rusher declares for NFL draft

Georgia’s leading rusher and top receiving back declares for the 2024 NFL draft.

Georgia Bulldogs leading rusher Daijun Edwards has declared for the 2024 NFL draft. Edwards was a crucial part of the Georgia offense as he shared the running back duties with Kendall Milton. He and Milton are heading to the NFL.

Edwards is a Georgia native who came to the Bulldogs in 2020 as a four-star recruit. Along with Milton, Edwards waited his turn and eventually found himself in the fold during his junior season.

Edwards totaled 2,083 yards and 24 touchdowns during his Georgia career. In 2023, he had 881 yards and 13 touchdowns. These stats help put him at 14th all time on the Georgia rushing leaders, which is one spot ahead of Zamir White. Edwards was also Georgia’s top receiving back for the 2023 college football season.

Edwards helped Georgia win two national championships with his shifty moves and excellent vision. Edwards will likely be one of the more underrated running backs to pass through Athens. He was one of the Dawgs that scored a touchdown in the 63-3 beat down of Florida State in the Orange Bowl.

The Bulldogs will look to replace his production with in house options like Branson Robinson, Andrew Paul and Roderick Robinson. The Bulldogs also have top running back recruit Nate Frazier coming in. Georgia also welcomes in Florida transfer Trevor Etienne.

We wish Daijun luck at the next level.
