‘It’s his time:’ Players think Geron Christian is ready to take over as LT in Washington

Geron Christian will be working to earn the starting LT spot in Washington this season, and some think he’s ready to do so.

With a young team in Washington, one of the major questions going into the 2020 season is about who will earn a few of the starting roles on offense. The running back depth chart will be hotly contested, and the starting spots at both left tackle and left guard will be points of contention as well.

Washington drafted rookie Saahdiq Charles this offseason to try and fill that spot, but he will have to knock off both Geron Christian and Cornelius Lucas in order to do so. Lucas was brought in as a free agent, but Christian is arguably the player than everyone has the highest hopes for, as his third-year in the NFL could end up being make-or-break.

Morgan Moses, who is now the oldest player on the offensive line, says that he believes Christian is ready.

Will Christian be able to step up and fill that void left by a future Hall of Famer? We’ll have to wait and see, hoping that reports out of training camp are positive. This is definitely the best chance that Christian has had in his career to earn a starting role, and it may be his last in Washington.

Redskins sign former Bears OT Cornelius Lucas to 2-year deal

The Bears have lost another depth player to free agency, this time swing tackle Cornelius Lucas, who signed a deal with the Redskins.

The Chicago Bears have lost another depth player to free agency, this time on the offensive side of the ball.

Former Bears offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas is signing a two-year deal with the Washington Redskins, according to Ian Rapoport. The contract is valued at $5.3 million.

Lucas served as Chicago’s backup swing tackle last season. But he ended up getting some significant starting time for the Bears last season after Bobby Massie suffered a high-ankle sprain that sidelined him for the final five games of the season.

Where things currently stand, Lucas’ deal with the Redskins likely adds another compensatory pick for the Bears. According to Over The Cap, it would likely be a seventh rounder. That would give Chicago four compensatory picks for 2021.

Redskins agree to sign offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas on two-year deal

The Redskins are adding to their O-line depth by adding Cornelius Lucas on a two-year contract.

According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Washington Redskins are looking to add to their offensive line depth by reaching an agreement to sign offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas on a two-year contract worth up to $5.3 million.

Lucas has played for six years in the NFL, moving from the Detroit Lions, where he was drafted, to the Los Angeles Rams, New Orleans Saints, and Chicago Bears. He has shifted aroud on the offensive line, playing both left tackle and right tackle.

It is a signing that makes sense for the Redskins, as they look to fill the eventual hole left by Trent Williams, should he be traded, as is expected. Lucas will now likely compete with Geron Christian for the starting LT spot, and potentially with Donald Penn as well, who said he would be interested in returning to the Redskins in 2020.

3 key matchups ahead of Bears vs. Packers in Week 15

Ahead of Sunday’s Bears-Packers game, here are some matchups to watch as the two NFC North rivals square off for the 2nd time this season.

Arguably no two teams in the NFL know each other better than the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. The league’s oldest rivalry adds another chapter to its storied history on Sunday when the Bears travel north to take on the NFC North division leaders in a pivotal game for both teams.

The Bears are on life support when it comes to their postseason hopes, sitting at a 2% chance to make the playoffs heading into Week 15. They’ll need to win and get some help from other teams to improve their chances.

The Packers, on the other hand, are knocking at the door when it comes to the playoffs. They’ll clinch a playoff berth with a win and a Los Angeles Rams loss when they take on the Dallas Cowboys.

Despite the Packers’ better record of 10-3, this game will likely be close, as the 7-6 Bears are riding a three-game winning streak. Look for a few key matchups that may decide the game for either team.

Jones has been the catalyst for the Green Bay offense in 2019, accumulating over 1,200 yards from scrimmage and scoring 15 total touchdowns. He’s been the Packers’ most dangerous weapon this season, meaning the Bears linebackers are going to have a tall task ahead of them on Sunday.

With starting linebackers Roquan Smith and Danny Trevathan both out with injuries, that responsibility falls to Kwiatkoski. The fourth-year pro has been superb in relief of Trevathan, playing excellent run defense and improving in pass coverage. Now, he faces another big test against Jones without Smith by his side. Can “Kwit” slow down Jones both in the running and passing game?

Bears RT Bobby Massie out several weeks with high-ankle sprain

The Bears will be without starting RT Bobby Massie for a few weeks as he deals with a high-ankle sprain.

The Chicago Bears might’ve escaped Week 12 with a 19-14 victory over the New York Giants, but they didn’t escape injury.

Aside from special teams standpoint Sherrick McManis, who suffered a groin injury, right tackle Bobby Massie suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s win.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Massie suffered a high-ankle sprain and is expected to be out for the next few weeks.

Massie was relieved by Cornelius Lucas in the third quarter against the Giants. While the Bears will likely activate Alex Bars come Thursday, look for Lucas to get the start in place of Massie.

The Bears have a short turnaround following Sunday’s win over the Giants as they head to Detroit for a Thanksgiving meeting against the Lions.
